This place by far has some of the best tacos in the area! 11/10 for their tacos and sauces. The al pastor taco is juicy and meaty and not dry like most places. They don't sell carne asada tacos but offer another type of steak--cecina. Cecina is a bit tough to chew on and the cut is one whole piece so when taking small bites altogether with the taco, it's a bit hard to chew off. That's the only con I had about it but cecina is pretty worth getting if that doesn't bother you. The fish tacos were amazing and on a whole nother level. Truly believe this place sells one of the best fish tacos as well! Much better than the fish tacos at slapfish anyhow. The only thing here is that the burritos are not really all that good. It feels like the flavor of the meat gets lost when mixed with the beans and when you don't add in the beans, the burrito itself feels too empty and becomes unflavorful. Aside from that, this is located in a nice food hall with lots of parking and from time to time, there will be movie screenings in the parking structure right across from it. The food here never disappoints! Everything is made from scratch. We got Baja fish tacos and a fish burrito and it was all so delicious! We watched as they made their tortillas to order. The tortillas were pressed thin which was great because the flavors of the fish and fillings stood out. They also make their own red salsa and green salsa and chips which we couldn't stop eating. This place has insanely phenomenal food. Their tacos are AMAZING. My boyfriend has tried all the meat options and has said they're all good and I have had all the vegan options... not one is bad. They're all stellar. I've seen in some other reviews people critiquing the price-point... idk if I'm just used to DTLA prices, but literally nothing is over-priced imo. All of their portions are super fair and their tacos are WAY above average, so to me it's totally worth it. The price for a single taco ranges from $4 to I think about $7 or $8. But that's because they have crab/shrimp/lobster, which costs more. One thing you HAVE to get is their guac-- they hand make it fresh per order and it is topped with serranos and cilantro. Every time I eat it, I can't believe how good it is. Even one of their vegan tacos is literally just their guac and some toppings. It's so good, they made a whole taco out of it. And I've had it, it's amazing lol Oh and they hand make all their chips and tortillas, and you can really tell, they're always SO fresh. Overall, please look this place up and visit, it's so worth it. Due to their large menu and options, I have eaten here a total of 2 times, trying new tacos each time. Some of the ones that stand out as amazing are the baja fish tacos, steak tacos and their mushroom tacos. So far the food has not disappointed and I will more than likely return especially because of their selection of vegetarian tacos. Absolutely a HUGE surprise of deliciousness. We went for another restaurant but they were closed and this place was the only place open. So happy we tried the food. Drove from Long Beach on Sat and were shocked to see the Mess Hall so empty. I ordered two Al Pastor tacos and a flank steak taco. My husband ordered their fish taco, Al Pastor and a charizo (with filet mignon on top) taco. The crispness and juiciness of the meat and the other stuff inside of the tacos were very well balanced and dressed perfectly. Nothing was needed except an appetite. Fonda Moderna takes several taco concepts (five actually) and brings it together under one roof. You'll find street tacos such as Al Pastor and Cecina; Carne -- top quality meats like wagyu, filet mignon -- Baja style fish/seafood tacos, vegan options, and guisado style. While I love the regular tacos I'm accustomed to, what really blew my mind were the Jamaica Al Pastor tacos using hibiscus flowers. Not bad, not bad at all. SOLID taco spot addition to the new Irvine/Tustin area. I've been a big fan of Chef Danny ever since I discovered Anelpaco and have been following him on his food journey. So...the tacos aren't really your traditional type of street or TJ style tacos. If I could describe it...its got your traditional Mexican ingredients and flavors, it's got a more modern style flare to it, buts it's not one of those Mexican restaurants that's trying to make something so damn fancy that it takes out the original taco element out of it. Tried this place during my lunch break. First impressions? $$$$$ pretty pricey tacos their cheapest for $$4 and their most expensive at $8. Still gave this place a try and order a variety of tacos like cochinita pibil, new york steak, and al pastor. Tacos were ok at most. I know theyre trying to bring a "modern spin" on their menu but it just seems like theyre trying to hard. Pastor was really tough and seems like the meat is not really seasoned properly (cant taste the pastor). Cochinita pibil was a little better but missing the classic pickled red onions. Interesting to see cubes instead of the shredded pork. Lastly the NY steak was ok again but really threw me off with the beans that does not allow the steak to shine (and again seems like the meat is not seasoned properly) If you dont mind spending 3X the price of any other taco place (prob for the same quality elsewhere) then go for it! Overall i dont think id come back due to the high prices. Id pay at most $2 for their cheapest tacos and maybe $4-$5 for their most expensive. read more

We stopped by for dinner on opening night and ordered several tacos (shrimp, cochinita pibil, Baja fish, and cecina) and the guacamole with chips. The tacos were pretty good, although my flank steak taco was a little too salty for me. The guacamole was very fresh, with big chunks of avocado and a generous portion. However, the chips that came with it were stale, broken into tiny bits, and the portion size was way too small for $10 and didn't match the amount of guacamole (see photo). We ended up taking half the guacamole home to eat with the store bought tortilla chips we had at home because they were better. They was supposed to be the best tacos ever! But no, they fell short. I ordered there Guisados a Bistek, Birria and Tinga de Pollo. The chicken was the winner. The Bistek was a bit bland. The beans didn't really add to the taco and didn't make sense. The Birria was fine but I think an opportunity was missed. There was only meat on the taco. Usually I love that but another flavor and texture would have really helped. The Pollo was good but a little wet. I know the meat is braised but they needed to drain it better. I ordered the 'sampler', 5 BITE SIZE tacos for $12, all different flavors. They were all very tasty. I also ordered a side Wagyu taco for $7, the wagyu was very fatty/grisly. Lastly ordered the rice and beans for $3. They were actually very good, great texture to the rice, but it was a laughably small portion. It was rice with probably 20 beans put on top. The best part was their tortillas. They were very good! I did enjoy the taste of everything, but it was not cheap, and I still wasn't as full as I would have liked to have been for $26! read more
