About two weeks ago, I came here at night with my friend after not visiting for a while. We ordered the grilled mackerel with miso and fried gyoza. The mackerel tasted unusually sour, and the filling in the gyoza seemed off. When we asked to speak with the chef, we happened to see a male staff member walking into the women's restroom with a female staff member. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes, and when someone finally came to talk to us, it was the same man who had just gone into the restroom with the female staff member. To our surprise, he was the chef. Between the condition of the food and that situation, it made us seriously question their hygiene standards. Foofoo Tei is a staple in Hacienda Heights with great Japanese food. I've been here probably hundreds of times, at this point, and I always have a desire to come back. For starters, this place is delicious for hot ramen and it is how it got a name for itself! I started off ordering the Nanchatte Ramen (#17) which is a creamy soup based with charshu and veggies. I now have explored further and have ordered almost every ramen dish here from the curry ramen to the tan tan men. I recently tried the Mabo Tofu Ramen (crazy,... yes). I got to say this was delicious. Savory, hot, and almost a perfect reflection of mabo tofu in ramen form. The thing that gets me about this place is the noodles. I don't know why I love them so much maybe its the texture and the thickness, but they're perfect for me. When I go I always get the broiled squid, which I personally love. A perfectly cooked squid with a light flavored sauce. A nice appetizer if you love seafood. For the a la carte item, I would highly recommend the curry omelet rice. This comes with a nice pork cutlet katsu, 2 -3 egg omelet, and curry all over hot white rice. Absolute staple. It's filling and will still have you wanting more. With this dish you will also get a house salad and miso soup. Parking can be tough on busy nights, and please note that this restaurant is closed for certain lunch hours. I love this place! It's a must for me. It does get pretty crowded during the weekends but it's well-worth the wait! The parking lot is small since the dining area is small but it's honestly so worth it. I love the creamy ramen as it's super unique and the broth is rich. A very low key mom and pop ramen and curry spot off the beaten path in a commercial area. I know this is a popular local place and finally got to try the ramen. Ordered #17, the Nan Chatte as this is the most popular ramen so tried it. The soup is creamy with a hint of sweetness so that's new for me. One of my favorite restaurants. Prices were very reasonable, and all the dishes came with miso soup with clams and a side salad. The portions were generous, I couldn't even finish everything. They don't pan fry the dumplings like before, where it comes out like a flying saucer. They are individually pan fried like normal but still very tasty and with a lightly crispy bottom. The ramen was just how I remembered. Piping hot, which is rare in a ramen place when ordering tonkatsu based soup. Noods were al dente, just how I like it, and very slurpable. Pork slice was tender and flavorful. A bit too fatty for DD. The soup wasn't too heavy that we both did a great job down the soup. Tempura was crunchy and vegetables were tender. We went here last night for the first time in about 2 years. I'm not sure what happened here. This place used to be so good with a waitlist everyday. Gyoza used to be bomb, waitstaff spoke Japanese, food was delicious. We arrived at 7 thinking we definitely had to wait for a table for seven people, but we walked right in and the place was pretty much empty. We were there until close to 9 PM and still pretty much empty (and zero pick up orders either). The food was about a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10 and the gyoza is not even close to what it used to be. The staff is friendly and makes you feel right at home. The space is small, with about 15 tables inside, so it fills up fast. If you want to avoid a long wait, get there right at opening or just before, there's always a line, and for good reason. I ordered the Kimchi Ramen with Pork Chashu, and it was absolutely delicious! I've been wanting to try Foo Foo Tei for a while but never was in the area/was free during their off hours. They are located in a bit of a residential street with a few other businesses (the other popular sushi place some blocks down is Akasaka Sushi), so eating here for me becomes an intentional drive here. The food itself was great and gave me home-cooked dish vibes. The seafood ramen was packed with fresh veggies and a few shrimps and clams and the ramen itself was very flavorful. The squid was very fresh and not rubbery tasting at all, it was a great pick. #31, which was a fried ramen with gravy + veggies was an interesting dish, and reminded me of chinese fried chow mein. I wouldn't recommend the mini tuna bowl ($13) even if it's a dollar off with an order of ramen - there was 3 slices of tuna and it tasted like previously frozen water. I was probably better off ordering the mini chicken or tempura bowl. I went on a Friday for lunch and there wasn't a line so I was glad we were able to be seated right away. Usually the lines get long on weekends so I highly recommend going on weekdays if possible. Every time I come here, I always get the Ten-Shin ramen and Fried liver. The ten-shin ramen is packed with flavor and if you like thick broth, this one's for you. The fried liver is also a classic and paired with the sauce that's on the side is also a hit. This time I also tried the squid which I thought was very flavorful and well cooked! Foo Foo Tei is almost hidden and it's not part of a busy street so it's nice to know there's plenty of parking space outside of the internal parking. They also include a slice of narutomaki (spiral fishcake) and half of a boiled egg. The egg was not soft boiled with the yolk not being runny, but I honestly don't mind since all of this came for $15. The chicken egg rice used to be juicy nicely sliced with melted egg on top, turns out I got burnt diced chicken with scrambled eggs on top. The fried fish had no salt or flavor of any kind and was cooked bbq style not the way it's normally cooked.
