Tried this place after hearing it so many times, but it was overrated and dissapointing. We ordered ten-shin ramen, curry ramen, and fried squid legs. Curry ramen has interesting taste, Ten-shin ramen has a very interesting flvor that im not sure how to describe. Fried squid legs was good. Too expensive for the portion, taste, and the type of service we received.

We stumbled upon this spot for ramen and were pleasantly surprised! The portions are great. They give you plenty of broth, and the ramen itself is really tasty. We shared the ramen and some takoyaki (which were decent), and it was more than enough for the two of us. It's definitely tucked away in the middle of nowhere, so you really have to be looking for it to find it, but it's worth the trip if you're craving a good bowl!

Foo Foo Tei is one of the few mom and pop hole-in-the-walls left around SGV. Sitting inside makes me feel like I'm in asia. They have a cozy no-frills interior with mostly 4-person seats. 7:30pm on a Saturday was packed wit people but the wait isnt too long. The staff was busy, but attentive. One thing that surprised me was they had so many different dishes (mainly ramen or curry); I need to go back to try the other flavors. I got the crab omelet which was tasty and brought out the crab flavor. The broiled squid was a good appetizer too!

I love this place! It's a must for me. It does get pretty crowded during the weekends but it's well-worth the wait! The parking lot is small since the dining area is small but it's honestly so worth it. I love the creamy ramen as it's super unique and the broth is rich. My dad one time ordered an extra large and it felt like it was double the ramen I ordered. Overall, this such a great ramen spot! I definitely would recommend the creamy ramen as I don't think I've seen anywhere else serve that.

The place is in an industrial area. So it looks suspicious but it's a local favorite. The broth is delicious and I really enjoyed it. Service was terrific and friendly. As this is a locals spot, there could be a wait according to the regulars we talked to.

Come early. There is always line in front of the door. Place is well lit, clean. The host is friendly and efficient. There are lots of varieties of Ramen and appetizers. The noodles is just right, the broth needs a bit mire umami in my opinion. But overall are great.

I came here once like 10 years ago. The waiter said the owner changed. Guess that's why many things changed. More pricy, less food. My pork chops curry is $18 and only 4 pieces. Food still good!

Background On Visit: Felt a bit hungers after moving furniture around. So we decide to replenish our reserves at FFT. Visitation Rights: Probably patronize the shop 2-3 times in the past. The last time was about 2 weeks ago. Credit Cards: They're accepted. Restrooms: They're available. The only complaint I had was that the light turn off while I was using the restroom. I ended up having to use my flashlight on my phone. I told a staffer about it and she said it was on a timer and that there was no way to turn it back on until it decides to. Thought that was a little weird when she said that. Ambiance/Decor: A hole in a wall type of restaurant with. It could use some updated furnishings. Service: Thought service was relatively okay. Staffers were a friendly and at times attentive. Took a while for them to come to take our order, but that's alright. Ramen came out at a decent time. Appetizer Of Choice: They didn't offer kaarage on the menu, so we decided to get the Takoyaki instead. Thought it was tasty and the mayo and takoyaki sauce enhanced the eating experience. Ramen Of Choice: Didn't remember what type of ramen I had over 10 years ago, but I do remember the last ramen bowl I had. I tried the Nanchatte Tonkotsu ramen. Thought the broth was okay. The broth was semi tasty, but after slurping more broth it... It just tasted salty. Wished that had a option to reduce the oil/salt level like other places. Foo Foo Tei For Thought: Might be patronizing this shop again, but not frequently.

Came here to eat some food, and overall, the experience was just okay. The service was fine, nothing terrible, but nothing great either. I ordered the Chicken Katsu with curry, which came with a small salad and miso soup. The portion was decent, but the flavor was pretty average. The curry sauce was a bit too mild for my taste, and the chicken could've been crispier. I remember liking this place a lot more before, so I had higher expectations this time. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to that. The food wasn't bad, but it didn't have that same freshness or flavor I remembered from my first visit. The atmosphere was fine and the restaurant was clean.

Restaurant is under new ownership, but let me be the first to tell you, the quality has not changed. The gf and I started off with this bean sprout stir fry and it was sooooo tasty for something so simple. And the ramen, just as good as I remembered. This time we tried the menudo ramen, and it was a great blend of japanese and mexican. Collagen-y and organ-y, I can guarantee this can cure any hangover. With the seasons changing, be prepared to wait if youre coming during the middle of dinner time. Options are endless here, so you're bound to find something you like.

Spicy Miso Ramen

A very low key mom and pop ramen and curry spot off the beaten path in a commercial area. I know this is a popular local place and finally got to try the ramen. Ordered #17, the Nan Chatte as this is the most popular ramen so tried it. The soup is creamy with a hint of sweetness so that's new for me. Lots of cha shu and half a soft boiled egg inside along with ginger pieces. Also got the miso ramen and asked for spicy. They do add $1.50 to any ramen if you ask for spicy but many can be made spicy. The fried calamari was good and hope to try the curry next time.

Atka mackerel

I usually come for ramen, but today they said none of the ramen dishes are available. I settled on the Hamburg Curry Rice. The dish arrived looking like a stew. The piece of meat in the center was soft and did not hold its shape. I sent it back before taking a pic. The other dish I ordered was the atka mackerel. It was the worst version of this I've had. The meat had overly firm texture and did not have good flavor.

#17 Broth is good. Think creamy ramen. The flavors were solid. It's no wonder why this place is well known in the area. Meat was too fatty for me. Noodles were too thin for my preference. I appreciate the temperature of the Ramen. Thanks Angel!

Ask the Community - Foo Foo Tei

When will they be open again?

They are open Wed-Sun from 11:30am-1pm, and 5:30pm-8pm (last call at 8:30pm). They are closed Monday and Tuesday.

What are the vegan options?

This place is listed today as having outdoor seating. Is it still available? If it is, is it covered or heated? How many people can sit there? / April 8, 2023

There's no outside seating. I am actually here right now second in line waiting for the doors to open at 5:30!

What days are they closing for Christmas and New Year's? Based on my and others' experience, they are too busy to answer phone calls. I'm aware that they usually post updated hours outside the restaurant. Have they posted any for this year?

They have many different set hours, they open for lunch then close and reopen at 5:30 for dinner, so as far as holiday hours it would be best to call them and ask what are there hours are for your specific day and time

Are they still open? I called multiple times with no response?

Yes, the restaurant is still in operation. Keep in mind that although they have two different closing times, they actually end their waiting list earlier than their business hours, depending on how busy they are that day. For example, today I saw… Read more

Is the Nanchatte #17 soup pork based? I've had it before but I've just read Nanchatte translates to "just kidding" and there's different answers as to what base it is.

Yeah, it's a creamy pork base. One of the most popular option!

Does the ramen noodle itself have any eggs in them? My daughter has an egg allergy and I would like to know beforehand.

Depends on the type of ramen you get. You can always just ask for them to not put any in the ramen.

Are they closed on Tuesdays too?

They are closed Monday and Tuesday and when they are open the hours are shorter LUNCH 1130AM TO 1PM AND DINNER 530PM TO 8PM

Whats the phone number? i tried to call and was told to enter a remote access pin.?

The phone number is the one listed on their Yelp page, but they don't answer and rarely take phone orders anymore. When I went they said it's too busy to take phone orders

Are they open for dine in eating?

Yes they are

Do they have gluten free (noodle)option for ramen?

No. This is traditional ramen.

Do they still open Sunday? Yelp shows it is temporary closed and called them like few times but no answer.

Currently open Sundays.

Is Foo Foo Tei still closed? I wasn't able to call?

I just called today and they are open!

Does anybody know what happened ? It was closed yesterday

Hi. Since curfew on Sunday last week, we decided to close for a while. We are repairing the parking lot while we close only the daytime. We will open as soon as we have enough chickens. Please hold and bare with us.… Read more

I have liked everything I've ordered but is there a low sodium option? Tying to cut down on my sodium so is there any ramen with a low sodium option?

Unfortunately, most ramen is not low sodium friendly. I would suggest to look into their vegetarian or mushroom base broth. Or ask them if the clear noodle soup is lower in sodium content. Because most ramen broth is made from pork it's hard to get… Read more

What kind of dressing do they use for their salad?

It's a home made tasting fine grated carrot and daikon radish dressing in a sweet & tart rice wine vinegar.

Are they open?

Yes

What is the spiciest I can get?

They don't have levels of spicy there, but I usually ask for it extra spicy and it's fairly spicy. If that's not enough for you they do have the chili powder and chili oil on the table or you can ask for more of the chili paste 😊

Do they have a vegetarian broth for their veggie ramen?

They have a vegetarian/mushroom broth, you will have to request it when you order

Is this place still open? I just went and it was dark and no one there or any cars

Yes they're still open they just have selective business hours

In the Rowland Heights area, there is no shortage of spots for some delicious Japanese food. But…read morewhile many people see the volume izakayas and ramen shops, it's actually quite rare to stumble upon a traditional mom & pop spot that makes classic Japanese favorites. That's why I immediately came down to Tamaya when I noticed the laid back atmosphere, small storefront, and modest food offerings. Walking up on a Wednesday evening around 6:45PM, there was a line to eat in the small dining room. But we were seated relatively quickly. Looking at the menu, there were large variety of appetizers ranging from your chashu and takoyaki to tofu steaks and gyozas. But what I was interested in was the amount of different ramen options, curry plates, and don bowls. With so many choices, you're definitely in for more than your typical Japanese spot. For this visit, I decided to try their Meat Lover's Ramen which was $19.25 at the time of this review. And looking at the bowl, I was very pleased. For one, large chunks of beef, chicken, and chashu pork were all on the surface with some vegetables and cilantro. The noodles to ingredient ratio was pretty equal at about 50% noodles to 50% ingredients. And with a soup base that filled up to the top of the bowl, there was no justification needed for the $19 price tag. If you're looking for a ramen with mass quantity, Tamaya is definitely the spot for you! Taste-wise, the flavors did clash a little as the meats all had different flavors to them. But nonetheless, they all paired well with the rest of the ingredients. While the chunks of beef had a soy sauce undertone to them, the chashu was more sweet and fatty. The chicken tasted lightly stir-fried, but was chunky and filling. The noodles of this dish were softer, but tasted great with the creamy broth. And although the greens were garnishes, they tasted freshly washed and added some fresh flavors to the bowl of ramen. There are so many ramen shops in the San Gabriel Valley that get the hype from so many reviewers. And to that, Tamaya does just as good of a job at making a great ramen (if not better)! The place feels cozy and approachable for those looking to try different kinds of Japanese food, the prices for the food were very good in the Rowland Heights area, the food tasted delicious, and the offerings are very diverse compared to many other specialized places. Because of these offerings, Tamaya easily earns a 5/5 in my book and is a place I will return to again and again.

Now that same small fried rice is $7, so these days I usually just stick with the ramen. The interior has barely changed over the years, and the restaurant has stayed in the same location the entire time. What I really appreciate is how consistent the food quality has remained after all these years. I also love ordering their iced coffee every visit. It's funny because this is a ramen restaurant, but the coffee is surprisingly good and perfectly matches my taste. One of the reasons I enjoy coming here so much is the atmosphere. You can often hear the staff speaking Japanese, which really adds to the authentic vibe and makes it feel like you're eating at a small ramen shop in Japan. Definitely a place I'll keep coming back to.

Once I tried their sushi for the first time, they quickly became one of my favorites in OC. They fly their fish in every Friday and you can literally taste the freshness. Over the times I've visited, I've tried basically the whole menu but a couple in particular are my favorites. I always start off with the Blue crab appetizer that's wrapped with salmon on the outside and asparagus. Their sushi rolls are all solid here--I can't recommend the signature Chubby roll enough. And if you're feeling adventurous, they even have Tuna bone marrow shots which are actually such a nice palate cleanser! And, of course, the star of the show is the Chubby sashimi platter. Each piece is thiccc and melts in your mouth and even comes with sweet shrimp and uni. This spot is genuinely a 10/10, so if you haven't tried it, like I said, you're definitely missing out! I did not like their Agedashi Dōfu because they make it different from most places where I've had it. The tofu is supposed to be served in sauce or broth. But theirs is all dry and did not come with enough sauce or broth to dip into, so the flavor was a little off for me. The rolls are decent. Personally I think they're packed with too much rice. The Poke Salad did not have a very generous amount of sashimi compared to other sushi restaurants. The restaurant itself is kind of small so the seating space makes me feel a bit claustrophobic.
