This is our second time here at Chan Kee on Golden Springs Drive. The place looks very dead/dark, and not like what it was over a year ago. Furnitures and decorations have been rearranged. It feels like they have more than enough seats & tables inside. Food prices are still reasonably affordable and foods are still delicious/authentic in taste. There used to be more employees inside, but today, we didn't see staffing at front counter. Ordered at self service kiosk. I had the all day daily breakfast quick fix: two eggs, hash brown, and toasted garlic baguettes. Simple breakfast much under $10. If I add a meat/sausage/SPAM/etc., I would pay a few bucks more. Everything tasted exactly as expected. Older Uncle cooking inside was busy and multiple tasking as usual with online app takeout orders. The beef macaroni soup was also exactly as described and comes with a beverage of choice (iced honey lemon beverage for us). Huge food portions. Good flavors. No complaints. Very satisfied. Maybe we are more simple to please with general Hong Kong street comfort foods. Overall, I do hope they can stay open and not shutdown like other locations during high inflation times. It's been comfortable dining inside each time. Uncles inside are hardworking folks. There were much lesser cars in the parking lot too. Different vibes compared to the first visit. Originally went to the Rowland location but they were closed so we drove 10 minutes down to this location. I wanted to try Chan Kee in Monrovia but they closed down before I got the chance to. My friend who's had CK before said they've changed their menu and it was now pretty overwhelming. We ordered a congee with a side of saucy rice noodle rolls and a wonton beef stew noodle soup to share. You basically order the base (congee or noodle) then add the options for an extra charge. Each entree/side/drink combo came about to nearly $20. The rice noodles and wonton noodles were pretty good. They give alot of congee but taste was just okay. Decor was cute. Food didn't take too long to come out considering there was only one person working and it was also a random Monday afternoon. Have been coming here for their porridge since this location first opened and generally had pleasant experiences... but it looks like things have taken a drastic change for some reason and the latest visit was beyond disappointing. To start off, there was only one person at the store and he was handling everything with zero time management skill. Pickup time continuously got delayed and I had to wait over 30 minutes at the store from the initial pickup time. Then the porridge, omg-- seriously what happened? It was so bland and looked as if they have poured water over some rice powder... like they don't care. As others have mentioned, this location really is not even worth a star. read more

I always love to come here whenever I want Chinese porridge. They used to have cashier to take your orders. The food may be not as good as before, but still okay to me, and they expanded the menu. Recently I came here again, and I noticed the waitress was cooking my order. She was also the same person packed my order, so not sure where is the chef. I have waited 25 minutes for one order and it was not rush hours. The experience from Chan Kee years ago is very different from Chan Kee in 2025. They used to have a long line out the door, but now it's pretty easy to get a seat. You go in, choose a table and you can either order at the kiosk or from your phone using the Toast QR code. It's a little bit difficult to order when you need to find certain items, and sometimes they run out of the beepers and you have to call over a person. We had the chicken congee, chow mein, rice noodles, and fried crueller. The best thing on the menu was the chicken congee. Everything else we either did not finish or ate because we felt like we had to since we paid for it. Would go back to order the chicken congee and nothing else. The chow mein was heavy on the soy sauce and the noodles were off. The rice noodles had sauce that tasted weird that you do not typically put on hk-style rice noodles. Would not drive more than 5 mins to be there. The staff was pretty nice. You could tell that they were super busy and running behind because the tray area was so crowded people could barely bus their tables. read more

Sometimes I can overlook the service a little if the food was just out of this world. I can't remember if I saw this on a food vlog or just spotted it on Yelp, so I bookmarked it. We were in the Walnut area and our other restaurants were closed on a Monday, so it was perfect timing to try Chan Kee. Never ever being here, I didn't know what to expect or how they operate. They had a sign on their procedure, but it was not prominent to me that I didn't notice it. When we walked in, it seemed as you just seat yourself and they had menus on the table. They had a lunch specials menu and breakfast all day menu. We took a minute to look at the menu and once decided I went to the staff member and he pointed me to the counter where they had the Kiosk's which I thought the guy would ask me if I needed help or had any questions. Nope, no customer service at all. I had a difficult time trying to find the things I want on the kiosk, it turns out the lunch specials were done and the all day breakfast is not available all day. So the guy gives me a different menu and the options were a bit different. Finally got my order in after 20! Minutes and I'm glad it didn't ask me for a top option. I was happy to see that they have a small sign that says No Tipping Please. Definitely not. Got our orders in a timely manner, but we had to pick it up at the counter. We ordered the Porridge, the pork chop bolognese with spaghetti and deep fried oysters. Fortunately for Chan Kee, the food was not terrible. The porridge was a little thick, but it was flavorful. Great food and taste with worse value by price increases. Poor pick up experience, with little people to help you. I've been eating here for quite a long time. And I noticed that it's slowly gone downhill, especially after the remodels. It's unfortunate because this was our favorite congee spot. Today I ordered thousand year old porridge with pork. I will have to say this place does give a lot of toppings/protein. They also have combo meals which it did come with quite a lot of food for a porridge, side of noodles and a drink for about 12 Ish dollars . I ordered for takeout so I'm not sure if that makes a difference but shortly after I got my order, I was going to eat, and I opened it and there was a bunch of brown old smelly lettuce on top.. I was like how could they even think about serving this to anybody? It even had a bad odor. Writing this review, I see the old photos that I had posted for this place and that was when the food was good. But now with this spoiled lettuce, I'm not sure if this is a one time mistake but the food quality has definitely also gone down so I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. read more

They've expanded the restaurant. It's much bigger now with more seating and I believe expanded their menu as well. The menu is so confusing. By the time you finish ordering, you end up ordering all kinds of things thinking it was with your meal. The girl who helped us was really nice but we had way more than expected. This place has really great porridge, everything else that we had which was the wonton noodles and rice rolls were OK nothing special. I would come back to eat their porridge, though, they have a nice container that keeps it really hot, large portions, and lots of sides that you can add to the porridge. I also like their Hong Kong milk tea. I thought it tasted great and they have a lot of options you can do such as less milk, more milk, less sugar, etc. Their prices are average to high for the type of good, it was $50 for 3 dishes (one combo) and 2 milk tea. Got here at 7:35am and saw a customer trying to open the door but was locked. Supposed to open at 7:30 according to the sign. Came back 20 mins later and it was opened. Went in to use the self ordering kiosk for the first time and the only option I see. One of the staff was nice and helpful when asked for assistance. Placed my order at 8:01 but was not ready until 45 mins later. Had about 6-7 people in total at the dine in area, few came before I ordered, and few after. Nonetheless they all got their food way before I got mine. My sister from out of town asked for this place, but if it was me I will never come back due to the slowness of this place nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone. There are other options around this area that I am confident that have better service. I'm not a fan of places asking for tips prior to receiving service and food. Chan Kee is definitely the spot if you're craving porridge. The portions are huge--easily enough for two people. I liked that they have a kiosk for ordering; it makes things much more convenient. They have plenty of seating and it was seat yourself. I also tried some non-porridge items: the shrimp wonton soup and the baked pork chop rice. Honestly, I've had better elsewhere, and I wouldn't order them again. The shrimp wontons were okay, but the noodles didn't have that nice bouncy texture you usually get with HK-style noodles. Found this place on Instagram and decided to go on a date here. Upon entering, the restaurant was pretty empty, maybe one couple Was there eating. To order, there are two kiosk tablets where you can place your order The menu was pretty categorized with your noodles, rice, dish, soup, combos, etc. I like how it is self serve. You can serve yourself water, as well as as there is a little condiment section where you can get crispy, onion, crispy, garlic, green onion, pickled ginger, etc. for your soups and sides. I ordered the beef noodle soup combo, which came with the Hong Kong milk, tea. My date order the beef noodle soup as well. We both enjoyed the noodle soup as it was very flavorful. My soup had a lot of noodles and just the right amount of beef, and my dates soup had a lot of beef Because he ordered just the soup alone. We also ordered the fried giant squid legs and soy sauce chow mein noodles for the table to share. These two dishes came out separately, and also took a while for the food to come out, which I understand because the food was made to order. We were not really impressed by the fried giant squid legs as most of it was batter and not enough squid. And the soy sauce chow mein noodles was delicious! Although we were already full from our beef noodle soup, we were able to have some of the soy sauce chow mein noodles. Great deal on the AYCE under $25 per person! You can pick whatever your tummy desires from the menu, with over 60 + items, and enjoy the made-to-order food. We started with tease/ light appetizers- rice noodle, fish shumai, takoyaki, fried chicken leg, clamsside up fried eggs then moved to carbs- friend rice, Chan's famous congee, hong kong style stried friend egg noodle, beef stew, shrimp wontons, followed by hand dipped shrimp tempura, edmame, fried scallops, fried oyster, Japanese sake clams and much more. Finished strong with house special ell rolls and a scoop of ice cream. I loved how Chan Kee adjusted the food portion to each order, since we have 3 people in the party, they would offer either 3 pcs of a small protion of the order, they want use to try everything on the menu, and not try to feed us with flavorless carbs. Our favorite item for the night was fried chicken legs; it had crispy skin, but the meat was juicy. Shrimp wontons with nothing but shrimp, we loved it so much and ordered twice. Sake clams were very fresh and flavorful! The AYCE does have a time limit of 100 minutes per visit, but it is still enough time for you to fill your tummy! My mom & grandma come here quite often but it was my first time. We tried their new All you can eat & wow, I think its such a great deal. Its about $25 and there's so many items to choose from. I've hit this one up a couple of times. The porridge options come with a side of youtiao or rice noodle rolls. And for about $16 (including tax and tip), this meal will feed you 3 sittings. They've about 8 options and you can visit the topping bar to add ginger, scallions, preserved greens, cilantro, soy sauce or black vinegar to customize your giant bucket of porridge. The House Special includes shrimp, squid, and pork offal...and is pretty tasty. They have a competent beef stew noodle bowl with your choice of noodles. I picked the knife cut noodles and had about half before I tapped out. I've had coworkers order noodles and wontons, breakfast items, Portuguese-style baked dishes...and the only items that don't get a satisfactory review were the Portuguese-style baked dishes. Start with Plain, add protein, side, then drink. Protein can be add as half (previous regular) or full portion, more meat. Cold drink is included now without adding extra cost. Total price is about the same for what I paid. Service is fast especially at night. Less customer. No line. Still good place to have Cantonese Style Porridge. They have more side dishes, snacks, dessert. Have not try them all. This maybe hit or miss since the item are not their specialties. Ambience is the same. Now they add digital dine in using Toasttab. It's porridge so not flavorful until you add the self- serve condiments. Chili oil works best with the porridge in my opinion. My dad enjoyed it. The restaurant is spacious and there's plenty of seating. My dad is in a wheelchair, and I appreciate the spacious arrangement of the tables. I'm usually not the type to complain, but I really can't accept this porridge. Every two to three weeks, I buy porridge and bring it to San Diego for my 102-year-old grandmother. Since she's old and has no teeth, I always get fish porridge for her. I've always loved Chan Kee's porridge, so I was really surprised by what happened this time. Yesterday morning, I bought three bowls of porridge--two fish porridges (one with added dried scallops, though I couldn't see or taste them at all) and one seafood porridge. When I arrived in San Diego and opened them, I found: * The first bowl was basically porridge water. * The second bowl was half porridge, half water. * The third bowl was normal. If, as Chan Kee claimed, the consistency changed due to the time or the long drive, then all three bowls should have been affected but clearly, that wasn't the case. I called them and even sent a video, and you can see their response. I've never had porridge turn out like this before, and this isn't my first time buying from them. I didn't reheat or stir it at all. Even when I cook porridge at home and leave it overnight, it never separates into just water the next day. This isn't about the money I spent, it's about the fact that I brought this for my grandmother, and all she ended up with was porridge water to drink. I'm really disappointed. I've also had multiple mis with my orders before--wrong items, missing drinks--but I've never complained. This time, I really couldn't hold back. What's even more frustrating is their response, they just blamed me and pushed all the responsibility onto the customer. read more

I was excited to try Chan Kee. I saw that bbq pork was served with rice and a fried egg. Well. How about they were out of bbq pork before 6pm ( sad face). Ended up ordering the 6 piece chicken wings served piping hot. The breading was light and not flaky like a traditional fried kitchen (KFC). It was tasty. Not served with any type of sauce so I squeezed up sriracha mayo. It worked. Also ordered the flat noodle with a side of shrimp tempura and seasoned corn. Noodles needed more flavor and veggies ( Chinese broccoli). 2 pieces of shrimp tempura was ok but 2 pieces for $5? Should have been $1 a piece IMO. Seasoned corn was average. Cheese melted on top and was a chunk of melted cheese not melted into a the corn. Lots of butter in the corn though. I think the congee might have been the menu item to get. Seems like that's what they're know for? Order by kiosk and I think staff can take your order if preferred. Order took awhile and no one else was there besides one gentleman who was done eating. Place is really self service- pick up your food, load up on your condiments yourself and go up for your to-go boxes, lastly, return your tray. The restaurant is clean and not loud at all with all the TVs going. Although, we were the only ones there! I may need to go back for congee. Love congee. Low key and semi-fast food if you're on the go. Stopped by for a weekend (late) lunch and it was moderately busy with a few empty tables. We ordered the beef stew noodles, pan fried dumplings, korean tofu, wonton noodles, curry with rice, gai lan, chicken tenders, ribs with rice, and soy sauce fried noodles. Not bad, all things considered, including the price. Everything tastes what you would expect, no wow and no disappointments (which is good). If you're going for the first time, just be aware that there's no table service. Once you walk in, find a seat and order using the QR code at the table. You will receive a buzzer that will notify you whenever food is ready, or sometimes staff will bring the food to you. You also get your own utensils, water, etc, and you bus your own plates when you're done. If you're looking for something simple and relatively quick, this is the place to go. read more
