Even when you order To-go, their utensils and plating is neatly put together and aesthetical. Service here is great. They're always checking up on you and making sure you're taken care of. We typically get the Brea roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, the chirashi bowl, and Udon for the kids. Never had a bad experience here, both from dining in and To-go. read more

There was so much rice compared to fish that every bite felt like I was eating a rice ball that briefly met a tuna. The miso soup tasted like someone emptied half a jar of instant broth into a pot and called it a day. Then came the sauces. The ponzu was oddly sweet, and somehow even the soy sauce tasted sweet. I wasn't expecting my sushi to come with dessert seasoning. The tamago was so sweet it should've been listed under the dessert menu. One bite was enough. The assorted tempura was another surprise, not the good kind. The batter reminded me of the frozen tempura you buy in the grocery store freezer aisle. I've never had tempura at a sushi restaurant that tasted like it came with microwave instructions. To top it off, there were flies and little fruit fly-type bugs making their rounds around the table. Nothing says "fresh seafood" quite like having to share your meal with tiny uninvited dinner guests. The 10-piece sushi set definitely wasn't worth the price. Long time diner, first time reviewer. Their sushi is generally good, although a bit on the pricey side. I did not like their Agedashi Dōfu because they make it different from most places where I've had it. The tofu is supposed to be served in sauce or broth. But theirs is all dry and did not come with enough sauce or broth to dip into, so the flavor was a little off for me. The rolls are decent. Personally I think they're packed with too much rice. The Poke Salad did not have a very generous amount of sashimi compared to other sushi restaurants. Quite possibly the best lunch deal out there! For about $17-22, you can get a three course lunch. For people like me who can't decide, this is amazing. I went with the tonkatsu ramen, nigiri sushi and tempura for about $22. My buddy ordered very similarly and we split the seared bluefin tuna with asparagus appetizer. Everything was pretty good, but have had better across the board. If it were for lunch combo, I would have given 5 stars because it's rare to get these types of options with this level of quality. Last Wednesday night... I decided to hit up another sushi place called Chubby Sushi & Ramen. Located in Downtown Brea. It's known for their sushi and ramen. I came here and it wasn't that busy. Seated right away!!! I've ordered some delicious sushi and some rolls. First off is the app... salmon with blue crab (4pc) Next up is some tasty sushi.... bluefin tuna (2 pc) and A5 japanese wagyu (2 pc). Then it's chubby ninja roll, and a roll that's named after this town called Brea roll. Sounds fun, right??? Oh, a Alaskan roll. For all those goodies, Presentation is quite nice. Looks fresh. I think the best item I've tried here is their wagyu sushi. Tastes heavenly good. It's $24.99 for that though. Crazy expensive, but who doesn't love A5 wagyu meat??! If you're in Orange County, specifically downtown Brea and you haven't tried this spot, you're definitely missing out. Once I tried their sushi for the first time, they quickly became one of my favorites in OC. They fly their fish in every Friday and you can literally taste the freshness. Over the times I've visited, I've tried basically the whole menu but a couple in particular are my favorites. I always start off with the Blue crab appetizer that's wrapped with salmon on the outside and asparagus. Their sushi rolls are all solid here--I can't recommend the signature Chubby roll enough. And if you're feeling adventurous, they even have Tuna bone marrow shots which are actually such a nice palate cleanser! And, of course, the star of the show is the Chubby sashimi platter. As we were standing at the entrance waiting to be seated, a waiter named Jun swung the front door open, hitting me. He didn't apologize, left the door open, and walked back inside without saying a word. A few minutes later, we were seated on the outdoor patio. It was very difficult to read the menu because the lighting was so poor, so we politely asked our server, Jun (the same person from the entrance), if we could be seated inside instead. He immediately seemed irritated. While cleaning a table, he threw the napkins onto it in frustration, which made us feel very uncomfortable. Jun told us he wasn't sure if an indoor table would be available. I kindly asked if he could check and let us know, but his response was, "I can't kick people out." His attitude throughout the interaction was rude and unprofessional. We requested a different server, and she was able to seat us inside almost immediately. From that point on, the food was excellent, and the service from the new server was great. Unfortunately, the experience had already been overshadowed by the way Jun treated us. The most upsetting part happened near the end of our meal. As I was walking to the restroom, Jun physically bumped into my shoulder. It didn't feel accidental, and I was shocked. I asked him, "Are you serious?" He quickly apologized and walked away. This experience was unacceptable. No guest should be treated this way, especially in front of their child. When I came back to try recently, I just parked across the street at one of the parking structures. This is definitely more of a sushi place than ramen. There are only three types of ramen (tonkotsu, shoyu and miso). I haven't tried any of its ramen, but the sushi was quite good. Everything was very fresh and tasty with just the right amount of portion. The signature Chubby Roll was very refreshing.
