Came here on a Friday evening and was told the wait is going to be an hour but turned out some folks no showed and we got seated in like 10 mins. The cocktails were creative and tasty and the food options were even better! We sat at the bar, shared some oysters, a cheese plate, and the short ribs. They were all quite delicious. This bar is so adorable, the interior is instagram worthy. As for the drinks, A+! The bartender we had gave us flare and mixed drinks like it was art. Went in on a slow Wednesday evening and received the worst service I have experienced in a long time. The bartender complained about her job when she first addressed us. I asked her for a recommendation on a good vodka drink and all she could do is point me to the menu, then got annoyed when I asked her what their top shelf vodka's were. The place was very dimly lit with a burning candle on the table. As I moved to pick up the menu I accidentally knocked the candle off the table because my depth perception is bad not great in the dark. How she responded to that was to walk away mad and ignore my boyfriend and I from getting any service. I am a native Oregonian and can say I will never step foot in the establishment again, nor will I recommend this place to any of my friends and family. My second time going.. and I will not take a star away because they didn't have oysters last night for the nye... because the service is great. This is a great place to go to before your big meal or after if you want to wind down.. obviously with an order of oysters and a drink would be fabulous because their oysters are pretty much my favorites I have had in a while. I did try a drink that tasted like a lemon drop and it was so good. Aaron was our server and he was so great! THIS is the type of place that people come to Portland for. Bravo, just standing ovation bravo. I hosted a happy hour here for 12 people and was worried it would be difficult to accommodate us. The staff and manager couldn't have been more friendly. It was busy and the staff was hustling so, the fact they were as helpful and happy as they were was so appreciated. Was able to walk in on a Sunday evening and snag two bar seats for a pre-dinner snack and drink. Tried the Direct Flight and Cash & Curry cocktails, both were nicely balanced with novel flavor profiles. They also had Weller 12 available, not marked up(!) Appreciate that they have some thoughtful zero proof options too. Oregon Coast oysters at $2 each were tasty and well shucked without any debris. Noise level is on the higher side for the space and concept, they could benefit from some additional sound proofing though it is certainly possible to still have a conversation. I was SO EXCITED about Fools and Horses, and was fairly quickly disappointed. The space is beautiful, but while dark and swanky inside, the juxtaposition of the open windows and the outside patio and light pouring through removes some of the cool ambiance in the space. Also, it is incredible loud in there, like hard to have a normal level of conversation loud. The tables are so small you can't fit much beyond a starter and two cocktails, which became a quick issue as our server was remiss in removing empty or finished dishes and drinks unless asked or handed them. The server was certainly ironically excited to be there, and thought she was pretty special... I have experienced less pretension at The French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. The level of "holier than thou" attitude was almost comical. I asked for a regular martini rather than the apple martini and you would've thought I took a dump in the floor. The food was just ok, and is a complete after-thought to the cocktail program (more on that in a bit). There were a few starters and less entrees, wine is also sparse and only there because it kinda has to be. Oysters were fine, but thank god the sea makes those, and the cheese plate was good too, again no cooking involved. The entree Mahi Mahi was dry and over cooked. The short ribs are good, but the potato that comes with them has a glaze that was burnt, chewy, and bitter. Since we were so far in it, we order the two desserts as well, both were off-putting. That tart has no flavor and an even weirder consistency, was hard to cut and eat, and the malasada was just way too doughy. Ok, the cocktails. They are great! The "During the War" was the table favorite, and another one (can't remember the name) tequila though, and it was green? - was also excellent. Alas, the drinks were just not good enough to warrant a return trip. Maybe I set my sights too high in the food based on the IG presence of F&H's, but if I want a cocktail bar, I'll just head to MWL or Teardrop, and well, if I want food, I'll just head to an actual restaurant. read more

The bartender gaslit me... went to the bar for a drink while waiting for a table at pink rabbit next door. Was delighted to find out they had Chambord to make a French martini -chambord is hard to come by in portland. Took some friends back a few months later and when I asked for a French martini, the bartender said they don't have any- "we've never had that." When I explained that I had one prior he continued to tell me that I must have gotten confused with another bar... what other bar is so poorly lit that a young 20-something has to hold the menu to the candle to read it. She thought there would be no problem but said she'd speak to kitchen and get back to us. Food was delivered and this food server had no idea about allergy. Decided to try a third food item and it was served. The crackers appeared to have the thing my husband is allergic to, asked about that and server didn't know and seemed to not care. The hostess at the front has major attitude. Two times I have tried to come in here, only to be turned away from a literal empty restaurant because of "reservations." As a retired restaurant owner, one should know only about half the restaurant should be open for reservations, and half should be open for walk-ins if you want to make any sort of decent living. Standing in a line of others only to be turned away when more than half the place is empty is annoying. Anyway, finally we both came in on a day where we didn't get turned away, still, the hostess seemed annoyed that we even existed. We had a lively young lady named Chelsey explain the menu and drinks to us. She was charming and very informative. While we awaited her return, terribly loud music blared from the speakers. We just about went deaf when our server came back and asked what drinks we might be ready to order. She gave very detailed descriptions about the drinks and was able to point us in the right direction for food and drink. We decided on a cash and curry (delicious!) and a kakomo green drink. Both were very well made and tasty. We asked her if she could PLEASE get whoever was in charge of music to turn it down a bit. She sweetly agreed and went to the host stand, only for the host to completely ignore her and keep the music just as loud as it previously was, but at least this poor girl went and asked per our request. Food came out and was dry, a super small portion, and overall kind of sad looking. I was expecting more from the food for the price. I know they have only been open a month, but I hope they add more dishes to the menu. Our server was so eager to make us happy despite us obviously disliking the whole experience, which we really appreciated. We ended up getting a burnt on the outside and doughy on the inside malasada and decided to probably never eat here again. Drinks took forever, looked like the poor girl at the bar was slammed while the guy talked to someone for a long period of time and left her to drown. Might be nice to have the male bartender pull the same weight as that poor female bartender left shaking drink after drink with a forlorn look on her face. They really tried with the ambiance, but the scratched up tables, smudgy dishwear, loud music, and rude hosts will probably keep us from coming back more. Only redeeming quality? Our server Chelsey was super kind, humorous, attentive, and good at her job. This girl saved our entire experience and I would only come back to sit in her section, order some drinks made by the attentive female bartender who makes a damn good drink, and stay clear of the host and the food. read more
