I explained that I have a broken arm and could not manage the beds either in or out of my car and the young man said "Not until we open". I love this place, this is one of the cleanest and most well maintained animal shelters I have ever volunteered in. The staff are very professional and knowledgeable. And as a volunteer. You truly see the inner workings of the shelter. All the cats and dogs are properly cared for. There is an on site medical facility to treat the many sick animals that come into the shelter. I've volunteered here for over 2 years now and every animal that is taken in is treated with the care and respect they deserve. I adopted a kitten for $125. The process to adopt is easy and takes 10 minutes. Many other places you must give a huge amount of information and then they decide. This is the correct way. I adopted a kitten from FAR in 2016. I was told she was good with other animals, sweet, etc. You know like most kittens she would need proper socialization. Then the shelter shock wore off. NOPE. This had to have been a feral kitten, or very close to it. She is timid, fearful, hates my senior dogs (who leave her alone), she is scared of everyone and has basically been living under my bed for a YEAR and a half. She has literally left the master bedroom twice. I contacted FAR via email for tips on how to properly integrate her into our home, and received no answer. I have tried every single tip published on the internet and it took a year for her to trust me enough to snuggle with me in my lap, on her terms. She cannot be lifted at all, or she will shred you. I have to put on oven mits to get her in a carrier. Everyone in my home is miserable. My kids are scared of her, the dogs pace and whine while she hisses from under the bed. It's quite clear FAR wanted to unload this cat versus spending time socializing her with a foster family prior to releasing her for adoption. This is a cat that was meant to be with a single owner, no pet household and she was placed with the exact opposite. I never wanted to be the kind of person that returned a rescue but after 1.5 years of trying I don't know anymore. read more

I had nothing but positive experiences with FAR! I recently adopted a puppy this past weekend and was quite impressed with their facilities, customer service, and the overall process. FAR created a safe/clean environment to interact with "Carl" and still be able to social distance. They were also transparent with any issues Carl had when he first arrived, as well as gave a detailed list for any medication he had taken. My vet was quite impressed with the care that he had received and said that I had a very healthy dog. read more

I came here to look at a different cat to possibly adopt, but he was already adopted by the time we got there. I am happy that cat found a new home, but I was sad, so we decided to check out the other cats that were available. We found Wiley, now Mr. Mew. This cat was so friendly and took to us right away, but I was not sure I was ready. Several days passed, and I could not stop thinking about him, we went back and adopted him. I am so glad that we did. Mr. Mew is wonderful! He is very loved now! Unfortunately, my other cat passed shortly after we brought Mew home. Pickles had kidney disease and not much time left. Mr. Mew has helped me with the grief of losing my 17 year old. Mew is only 2, so he has a ton of energy! I am grateful to have him. read more

Absolutely a horrible place. I adopted a beautiful cat from here and started having some adjustment issues with him. I asked for help, and the staff had the audacity to shun me in emails. The proclaimed "we love him DON'T worry, we can take him back today!" Followed by a dozen other emails "when will you take him back since YOU can't take care of him properly?" Or "it's ok you are having issues we won't! We just love him!" Then the director emailed me and offered zero help, only proclaimed I just wasn't cut out to be an animal parent. Jokes on them because he adjusted and he's doing fine. Never go here. And make sure you never offer employment to anyone who works here as they will contribute to a hostile selfish, judging work environment. I can't explain enough the amount of seething contempt I have for these people, their head nurse, and director of operations and management. read more

I went to adopt a dog and it was very obvious that Foothills had an owner already picked out for the dog. It was interesting to me how the women in charge kept looking for someone in the parking lot. Fiinally the other people showed up, and she went down to talk to them privately. So then we were in a "drawing"! Guess who won? The women who magically showed up in the parking lot, who had the "private" conversation! Oh well, as we all know there are thousands of dogs out there. I just wouldn't waste your time at Foothills. We recently lost our baby boy Rico, and we are devastated so i looked up shelters to see if i could find another dog that looked like him to help us ease the pain. My oldest daughter (3) was very scared and traumatized after what happened with our baby. I found a dog that look almost identical to our and decided to visit FAR. I read the reviews and became skeptical but I am far pleased. The facility looks amazing and you can tell that the dogs are taken care of, i love that they are not in cages. All the ladies that helped us were extremely nice they gave us time to visit with the dogs, unfortunately we didn't connect and they growled at my oldest. So they began to discuss with us other options that would work. They had a puppy that looks like a mini version of our baby boy rico. My daughter was ecstatic and i saw her face glow up like before. I held this puppy and he cuddles up in my chest, i almost cried of happiness remembering my baby boy Rico. I am more than pleased with my experience. Thank you FAR for working with us. We had a time crunch because my husband had to go into work and they were great with us, processing our adoption as fast as possible. (My husband made it to work on time). read more

What does it take to save the life of your beloved dog, who has epilepsy, and by all accounts, is getting worse? And by worse, I mean having a cluster of seizures, which last about 45 minutes once a week? More medicine? Tried it. Neurologist? Tried that too... And by this point, my husband and I were asking if it was her time for the "rainbow bridge." So, we tried what we felt was our last hope, getting her a little friend. And we watched and waited.... and waited.... and still waited. Our Daisy now only has one seizure about every six months. And our Zoe (whose name we didn't change, but altered to be Zoephine Boneapart because she is a little empress) is a fiesty lover who cuddles her sister at all times. She has also formed a singularly amazing bond with my husband, who always wanted a little (human) boy... but is now getting a dreamy eyed look at the possibility of a little girl. Zoe saved our family, and has enriched our lives... So if you are looking for a reason to live and to truly look at life as something to be savored, rescue!! I've stopped in here twice now. GREAT DEALS! I got three glass pyrex baking dishes for $1 each.. They're $3-4 each at GoodWill. My friend bought a brand new dehydrator for $5. They have clothes, shoes , handbags, jewelry and household goodies. Its in a very affluent neighborhood so the things are very nice in there, but you're not going to find anything funky. Plus, all the proceeds go to the rescue group and they're going be doing on-site adoptions as soon as their construction is finished. Shouldn't be too long now. read more

These guys really do wonderful work with finding homes for all types of animals. They take such care getting abandoned, sick and scared future fur babies in top shape to go to their furever homes. I got my kitten there four years ago. They had great advice as to how to introduce her to my other kitty. They even followed up a week later to make sure everyone was getting along! Very strange place I walk in and it's nice very clean and Scottsdale like, I wanted to see some dogs, ok they show me were to go to see dogs and now I seeee dogs but I want to interact with a few of them to which they said no you can not unless you are buying a dog. This is very strange to me being this is the first animal rescue to even say that to me. I'm not sure how people are suppose to let the animals chose the person they want if the dog can't even have personal time. I'm sure people would like to know how there dog acts at least a little before allowing a pet in there home I mean that's till the animal dies so you don't want to walk out with a maniac or a pet that does not like you. I made a slight fuss about not being able to see the dogs and they all said no and that it's just what they are told to say. That's weird I mean you want to make money as a business I agree but at what cost ( buy an animal or leave ) I won't be getting my first dog here I can't support a business that doesn't give a chance for connection between animal and human it's not humane read more

My friends dad adopted a kitten, within an hour he knew he couldn't keep it when his resident cat tried killing it. I rehomed it but that didn't work out either so poor little Tiger, ( the kitten) had to be returned. I'am surprised that the shelter was so hesitant and not welcoming to him, I thought shelters made it clear to adopters that it things don't work out, the kitty must come back to the shelter instead of the adopter trying to rehome it, I mean, don't they want what's best for them? Don't they want to know where their animals end up? When I took tiger back, I was expecting someone to welcome him back, instead someone came and took him then brought my carrier back a minute later and told me, " ok you can go now" I wish they would have shown tiger a little love and assured me he would be matched with the right home, since I clearly told them hes a very, very, dominant lil guy, and would be best in a home with no other cats and alot of stimulation, he's an absolutely crazy lil kitten but I wanted to know that they'll find the right home for him. I got none of that, instead I felt like a burden bringing then this kitten back. It was extremely difficult taking tiger to the shelter, and I left with such a sad, worried feeling for this little kitten read more

Adopted a dog at an adoption event, I was initially very happy the dog was very well mannered... however 24 hours later we were at the vet for the first time to treat kneel cough.... I told the volunteers that I had other animals at home and I needed to know for sure that she was healthy.... my other animals are up to date on shots so not a big deal other than spending $ on vet visits and medications... well 4 days later I was back at the vet when I noticed she has several sores on her body and was losing fur. The vet suspected mange or ringworm after testing both tested negative but was given several medications, they took a sample to be sent to the lab so we could try and figure out what this little dog had going on... 300$ later she does have ringworm.... she had scabs on the tips of her ears when I adopted her and when I asked I was told that she came from a home with other dogs and it's was probably from someone chewing on her.... well probably a better idea to get that checked out seeing is how ringworm is contagious and if you knew she came from a home with 40 other dogs.... maybe in the future you can keep your animals for longer than 3 days to determine if they are truly healthy before sending them out into other people's homes. Update: I have changed my 1 star to a 2 star after a few days someone from foothills contacted me and is refunding my adoption fee that will help offset some of the vet bills. Thanks for doing that and in the future i hope you keep your animals a little longer to ensure they are truly healthy before sending them home with someone else. read more

Loved this place! Found it via Yelp. On the small side yet fairly well organized, stocked and maintained. Two dressing rooms with mirrors and an assortment of goods from clothing to furniture, jewelry, books, toys, housewares more. Chalkboard by the cashier displays the specials of the day. For example, all women's blouses and men's shorts were $3.50 each on my visit. Shoes from what I could tell are all priced at $6.50 each. Credit cards OK. Great place to adopt a dog, in no way do I want to discourage the adoption of dogs. However, the treatment of volunteers is DESPICABLE. My sister had volunteered at this Scottsdale facility (Bell road) for about a year. When she showed up for her shift today, there was no one to sign her in for 20 minutes so, instead of wasting her time, she preceded to do the normal activities she had been trained to do. After taking a dog on a short walk around the building, an employee stormed out of the building screaming and cussing at her because she apparently was not supposed to take the dog on the walk even though he was in the designated area where she would normally take the dogs on a walk. She was then accused of printing a fake id card and overheard the employees using nasty language about her as she walked out. I had to pick her early because she was on the verge of tears. Even if she had done something wrong, there is no excuse for this type of treatment for a volunteer. Those employees have no place in this establishment. My sister will be volunteering elsewhere. read more

A very disappointing experience. I am sure FAR does very good work and thank God we have people who care about lost, unloved pets, but people skills are as important as animal! We stopped at the Pima Road facility as we were on our way down to a pet adoption event taking place down at one of the pets stores. It was hard to find the adoption office and when we found it, there was no one there. We waited about 7 or eight minutes, then thought maybe we were in the wrong place, so we went back out. There was a fenced in area with someone obviously involved with FAR and two potential pet parents" and the adoptee. Politely, we stood about 10 feet away from the enclosure so as not to impose or distract the dog while his future people got to know him. After a few minutes, the FAR lady looked up and virtually growled at us (too much time with the pups?) "Is something wrong?" Her tone and demeanor was very aggressive and unfriendly. My husband told her there was nothing wrong, that we were hoping to adopt a young dog and had stopped in to see their rescues. The FAR woman said, "If you want a puppy, we don't have any", and then turned back to the other people. Ummm---we said "young" dog, not puppy, but frankly, we want our pet adoption to be fun and with people who share our excitement in adding a new member of the family. This woman was not that person. We certainly don't complain about an interviewing process that matches the right pet to the right family or fees that help support the shelter, but I draw the line at outright rudeness. I expect better manners from my dog! She could have at least smiled or---if she was feeling overworked, had just said someone will be with you in a moment. Our search for "The Queen" continues, but it won't be at FAR. read more

We adopted our Chi Cousin Vinny (i.e. Tux) last December. He's a great little dog! He was about 2 1/2 years old. The adoption experience was very positive. We brought our other dog Baxter in to meet him. He's now healthy and happy and my husband says he lives in dog paradise! We love our little guy! read more

FAR is an excellent place to shop for unique clothing, housewares, art, furniture; just about anything you may be looking for! Most of the people working there are volunteers, so ALL of the money taken in by reselling gently used items goes right to the welfare and care of the dogs and cats they rescue. We adopted our little Rex, a dachshund/Jack Russell Terrier mix, from Foothills Animal Rescue on January 30, 2016. We were looking for a companion for our standard dachshund, Baron, who is also a rescue. We can't thank Jennifer enough for leading us to sweet little Rex. We love him and Baron loves him, too! We adopted our cat, Winston, from FAR at the end of December 2014. We chose him as we specifically wanted a declawed inside cat. The adoption staff was very nice and helpful but they certainly miissed the mark as far as him being healthy and available for adoption. We noticed that he was a bit skinny but attributed that to the fact that he did not like the food. Shortly after we adopted him we took him to our vet in Gilbert to have him checked out and give us a starting point for his records, The tech at our vet's office immediately noticed his bad breath. Yet in fact his breath was bad enough to kill a brontasaurus. Our vet told us that he had LONG TIME severe dental disease and had a number of teeth that needed to be pulled in addition to having them cleaned. We were assured if FAR noticed any problems with their animals they are checked out by their vet and treated prior to being made available for adoption - what a crock!! If anyone had been paying the least bit of attention to him they would have detected his bad breath and done the responsible thing and had "their vet" check him out. During the short time we handled him and were deciding to adopt him he did not meow or open his mouth. Within less than 2 weeks we have had several hundred dollars on vet bills for blood work which shoed he was slightly anemic,. An MRI for his heart mumur, also to check he was healthy enough for anaesthesia and to check for anyother issues we may not know about. As of today he has has his teeth cleaned, been given another round of antibiotics for his breath and pain meds to keep him comfortable so he can eat soft food as much and as often as he wants to try to put some weight on him. As of today has been referred to a Veterinary Dental Specialist to be evaluated for extraction of several (4-6) severely decayed teeth cost to be determined when he is seen on February 11th. Within a week or so after finding out all his health issues we emailed the Executive Director and several board member with our findings and requested someone please contact us and assume financial responsibility for his health issues Well that never happened. What a surprise! We considered returning him to FAR but decided against it as we felt they would continue feeding him the same dry food that he can't eat and not rectify his dental issues to restore him back to health thus issuing him a death sentence. If you do adopt a pet from FAR be sure to "look under the hood" as our vet in Gilbert told us. Check for bad breath and tooth decay issues as their free insurance that comes with each pet does not cover pre existing conditions thus making it totally worthless in our case. I called this place this morning, about a litter of puppies I have. Anyways, I called the shelter part of this business, the man who answered the phone was ridiculously rude, spoke over me. Did not listen to what's was saying what so ever. His customer service skills didn't even pass to the bare minimum. Probably just shouldn't answer the phone... I under stand him telling me over and over again they don't have any puppy fosters. He wanted me to call rescues on the west side, when the puppies were already in my possession. & I live in Scottsdale. I'm sure he was a volunteer so he doesn't care how he talks to people who call for advice. I'm glad I won't be taking my puppies here! Disgrace! read more

Foothills had two parties in two rooms signing documents to adopt the SAME kitty. Needless to say, we were heartbroken to learn we didn't get to bring Roxy home. And the way Foothills handled it made our heartbreak worse. We are very disappointed. We'll never go back. Such a miserable...yet preventable!...experience. My friend and I came to Petsmart today and were very interested in a Chihuahua mix (though he was obviously a terrier mix) we were told that his adoption fee was $50-$75. They called just to "check the price" after we called my friend's mom to come meet the little guy.... It was then we were told that his adoption fee was $175! You get your animals from the humane society, yet the humane society charges a max of $75-100 and that covers all expenses. You are gouging people for money and it makes me sick! read more

Foothills Animal Rescue is so great, clean, friendly, and the volunteers and staff truly care about all of the animals. The facility is so clean and cage-free, so the cats and dogs can socialize with one another instead of being enclosed in tiny cages. They make sure the environment is clean and bright for all of the animals so every cat and dog looks happy and healthy! I have been volunteering with my sister there for years now, and am still impressed by its progress and constant effort to make the place amazing. Let me start by saying all the girls that worked here were very kind and willing to help, the place was clean and all went well until I met the Board Member Carrie McBride. I can not honestly say we met because she did not introduce herself she just walked up and after the nice girl that was helping us with our completed application for the puppy we were about to adopt named Vitamin told her this is the adoption parents here is their app and stated that we do have one female dog at home that is a female Doxie she immediately cut her off and said "absolutely not two female dogs in a home will not work I know this for a fact with this breed" she didn't even look at our completed adoption form her mind was made from that alone. The mood immediately changed within the whole group because she was so incredibly ignorant and rude with how she walked up and bluntly denied the adoption after two seconds of meeting us that even the woman that was helping us seemed uncomfortable. I advised the board member that she is wrong and that two female dogs will be fine you introduce them to each other and our dog we own now is so passive and I do not Foresee any problem at all she insisted she is the KNOW ALL of every situation possible in this world and said she would take our app but if someone else fills out an app for VITAMIN that has a male dog instead of a female dog they will get the dog first. I spent at least an hour holding this sweet dog and talking to the fosters of this litter of puppies and the foster family was just awesome and kind and excited to see this puppy go to a good home. I can not believe someone so ignorant and rude is able to make a split decision, that was made out of what she claims she knows of this breed. It is not possible for someone to say there is no way this puppy will be a good fit because of another female puppy that is already in the home. I am so upset I am going to continue this complaint up the ladder as far as I can go in regards to CARRIE MCBRIDE. She is an awful, disrespectful, ignorant, know it all and I hope she can humble herself for the sake of these wonderful pets that deserve to go to loving caring homes. I would like to add I only know her name because I called foothill after driving home to find out who she was just so I can write this review she never even gave the courtesy of her name and ALSO would like to add the lady that had our adoption app told us after Carrie walked away that she is sorry for the way that happened and tried to make excuses for her nasty behavior by saying she has had to step in many times and take over for Carrie because of her nasty attitude towards people and advised this is something Carrie is aware of and says "she is a dog person, not a people person" and that Carrie has expressed before she knows she is off putting to people. Pretty sad when you can't do the right thing and adopt a good dog into a good home just because there is a board member walking around on a POWER TRIP. read more
