I would give give FG 3.5 stars but I settled with just three. It is definitely a place to go for a special occasion. Service was very good and our waiter, Michael was well informed regarding the menu. Went with two other couples who seemed to like their glasses of wine but we all agreed that the french onion soup and white pizza was very bland. Prices at FG are over priced and portions are quite small. I ordered the bouillabaisse and it was very good. I would recommend that. Another person ordered the filet and fries and he was joking how small it was. The vegetable gnocchi was the girls' favorite of the night as well as the red trout. I would recommend the trout, vegetable gnocci and bouillabaisse. I have to say that the desserts were fantastic. We ordered the banana bread pudding as well as the banana parfait. I would go back to FG just for the desserts and a cup of expresso. All in all, the restaurant's decor is inviting, offers good service, small portions and excellent dessert. read more

We ate here last night and loved it. The charcuterie plate tasted good but lacked imagination.... The Farm Egg was excellent. We had Sturgeon and Veal and both were delicious and presented well. Everyone was very nice, attentive, and truly made us feel welcome. The interior is charming with all of the windows and a small amount of tables. Totally agree with Kelly C. The rating of two stars according to Yelp is "Meh. I've experienced better" and that better was the previous version of Forest Grill. I just visited for lunch since the new Chef has arrived. I didn't expect a huge departure of the menu since it's been so successful. I was wrong, sorely and unmistakeably wrong. I've been to FG probably 10x at least, between lunch and dinner. I've had a tough steak once and bad service another time, but I kept going back because overall, the experience was pleasant. My go-to for lunch was the chicken club and beet/goat cheese salad. Long gone is the wonderfully dressed salad with yummy dressing and deep friend goat cheese. The replacement salad was a plate of bitter greens, dressing with no spice, which tasted like just oil, a pile of goat cheese on top and a couple pieces of grapefruit - and two pieces of beets. WTH. I had a bowl of the butternut squash soup, which was overpowered by some spice. WTH. Two bowls of soup, two salads and a ice tea was $42. WTH. If the food was amazing, I would be back, but I just can't. read more

The wine menu was pretty extensive but I don't know much about wine so I can't really speak to the list quality though. Our food was good, but not overly impressive. Hours before we were set to try the new Forest Grill we all read a lukewarm review in a local magazine. Hard to believe this was the same restaurant....4 of us each had a fantastic experience. The updates to the dining room were great and make the space more approachable and inviting. The size makes it intimate - a neighborhood place. The service was great without any attitude. The food was incredible. The scallops were unbelievable, and I don't really like scallops that much. The bolognese was exceptional with boar meat. we had 2 different desserts and they were also outstanding. Only flaw is that the website did not have a current menu, so don't get your heart set on a particular dish...it may not be available, but I am sure the alternatives will be terrific. A nice addition to the Birmingham Restaurant scene - we will be back. read more

Really, really, wanted to give one star but that seemed a tad harsh...! Went to Forest Grill after being very impressed by Brian's Charcuterie book and looking forward to sampling some homemade Charcuterie, fare etc. It was hard to distinguish the various pig parts as the waiter was unclear about what was what, and everything looked like a lot of fat shaved extremely thin. Was hoping for some homemade sausage/sauscisson on the platter instead of the assortment of salads that the waiter selected? Ordered a bottle of good champagne (in a celebratory mood!) but it arrived in a lukewarm state! Waiter tried to cool it down by salting the ice bucket...when the champagne refused to cool the X "ChopHouse" manager coerced us into accepting the lukewarm champagne by putting the blame on the waiter for not informing us that it was not "chilled". We ordered another wine as we didn't want to wait forever. Entrees took 1+ hours from ordering to get to the table. The Scallops and Pork Belly dish was monochromatic and could have used at least some grill marks on the scallops...no marks for presentation, taste meh! Salmon entree was just OK. Lemon Creme Brulee was extreme carmelization and no creme. Would have loved to do a five star review, but that ain't gonna happen this time... read more

I have been a fan of Brian Polcyn going back to the 5 Lakes Grill days. (one of my favorite restaurants) I have to say that I was sadly disappointed by Forest Grill. The taste of the food was very good but the meager portions will prevent me from ever coming back. The prices are ridiculous for the portion size. $30 dollars for a piece of salmon that took about 5 bites to eat! Increase the portion size and include a side or two and you would have a winner. read more

Executive Chef Nick Janutol and his team hit the bullseye of perfection in everything I tasted tonight. Opened in November 2015, this restaurant has new menu items. I ordered the Brussel sprout salad, Risotto, Duck breast, Coconut dessert, and French champagne. Every bite of the Brussel sprouts and Coconut dessert was a taste explosion of flavors. The duck was perfectly seasoned and very tender. The Risotto was a delicious comfort food. The bread was too hard for me. A choice of a soft roll would be greatly appreciated. Delightful and friendly staff were hardworking, very professional and helpful. The waiter told me they will be open on Sunday's for Brunch sometime in the Spring. I always read Yelp with a grain of salt. The reviews have usually been right on after our experiences. That seems to be the same for the Forest Grill. We have a a few "winey" friends who can criticize till the cows come home. We were watching Anthony Bourdain when the Grill was headlined. WOW , we said. Let's go! The experience was very positive. It was a Tuesday night so the crowd was slight. Matt our server was pleasant and knowledgable . We had the sausage for appetizers and it quickly reminded me of cafes in Tuscany. Just the the right portion that satisfied 4 healthy patrons. My wife had the trout for dinner and was very pleased. The 2 gents both had the Marrow and pork. I must say the dish hit more taste buds that I ever new I had. Lots of neat yin/yen going on there. The duck was tender and more than adequate in size. Now I'm a big boy and I had to ask for a box for the pork. Desserts were tasty. I had the Lemon Meringue Brulee and it was very summery. Shady Lane pinot Noir was a great fit for the 4 of us. Overall we expect to return in the Fall and look forward to that menu. read more

Maybe it was due to the fact that it was a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was dead, but the service was awful for a restaurant that is supposed to be high end. If you're going to charge high end prices I dont think competent service is too much to ask. There was no explanation of the menu, except for the several things they were out of. she failed mention that all wine bottles were half off, we overheard another server tell HER table (this is after we had ordered three glasses from their limited wines by the glass selection that each cost the equivalent of what a bottle would have costed). We were her only table and she could barely be bothered to check in or interact with us except to take our orders and deliver the $220.00 check. The farm egg appetizer was great but the Halibut entree was pretty disappointing. We were celebrating a birthday, and we really regretted coming to this restaurant. We have dined at Forest Grill multiple times, and we enjoyed ourselves more and more each time we visited. Laid back, comfortable atmosphere with valet, open kitchen, lots of natural lighting, a nice patio, and a place where you feel appreciated. One of the best things about the dining room is that even though their business could probably have justified it; they didn't cram the tables so close together that you felt like you were dining with all of the people at all the other tables around you. To us that showed a consideration for the diner above the bottom line. The menu was rather small, and a little on the high side, but, for the most part, you got what you paid for here. We have sampled much of the fare by now even though it changes by season, and did not find a single dish that wasn't unique and a pleasure on the taste buds. You would not find much from Forest Grill menu on any other menu around which speaks to the caring and creativity of the head chef and the kitchen staff. The craft beer and wine lists were among the best in the area, and that's saying something in this market. The servers here were always un-rushed, ultra-professional, and gave just the right amount of attention without being intrusive. Always surprised that this restaurant didn't get more attention. SO DISAPPOINTED THAT FOREST GRILL IS CLOSED NOW, will be missed. Hope it reopens, or reincarnates into another special spot. read more

To be quite I honest this is the first review I have done for a restaurant and I normally won't but I feel this venue needs to be addressed in case you are planning only holding any big events (birthdays, corporate events, etc.). The service is absolutely terrible for a fine dining restaurant. I had made a reservations a week prior for 15 people at 9:30. The event was for birthday and when looking at the reviews, we thought it was going to be great. Being greeted by an EXTREMELY rude valet host, we showed up at 9:30 and was told our table wasn't ready. We had to wait about 20 minutes at the bar which wasn't a big deal at all by any means. It was a little bit irritating that when we got there we walked right past our table and everything seemed prepped and ready. After being seated, we given a background and explanation of the menu. After putting in our orders our server came back and said that they didn't have any sirloin steak. A few people in our party had to re-order, which still wasn't that huge of a deal. The food was okay to great. I personally had the salmon which was great. Once our everyone was done which was about 11:15pm, we had received a bill for over $800. Being we had several couples and a few that had already stepped out and paid, we had asked the server to split up the bills according to how we discussed with her. After about 10 minutes, she came back and told us that the computers wouldn't let her split up the bill after she had rang it in altogether. After her apology she handed us the check and wanted us to split a $800 bill for her. We had already told her how it was to be split and she knew what everyone ordered, the least she could have done was write out each couples bill. With the amount of money and setting of the type of restaurant we were in, you would at least expect that. We proceeded to spend about an additional 45 minutes trying to understand the receipt and split the bill. Once everything was said and done it just seemed very frustrating that we had to do all that work when paying that much money. Due to my experience, I know for a fact no one in our party, including myself, will return to this restaurant. I don't care how good the food it. The service here is horrendous for larger parties, so be aware! read more

Food was excellent, but the restaurant management not so much. Was gifted a considerably valued Forest Grill gift card in February 2015. I tried to use the gift card in July 2015, only to find the restaurant was closed temporarily. Ditto in September 2015, as the restaurant was still being remodeled. Following the restaurant's reopen in late November, I tried to use the gift card in January 2016 to pay for a dinner for two, but was told that even though the name remained, the new ownership wasn't accepting any previous gift cards. I was told a story that boiled down to the new owner forgetting to consider previous outstanding gift cards when contracting the sale, which I'm certain is true, but that should never be plied onto the gift card holders, especially considering these diners are often some of the most loyal. This is one group I'm forever gone from, as the gift card policy provides a glimpse of the lacking customer focus of this management team/owner. In 2016, customer service is every bit as important as the food for restaurants. Service and food was at the 4.5/5 level, and conversation with chef Nick was pleasant, but the management practices will ruin Forest. read more

The place should be a sport bar not a restaurant. Thought it was a up-scale restaurant, it was not, perhaps it was before the new management. The seating was terrible. Very few tables to accommodate me and my wife. The bar close by was loud and people were cheering some event on TV. What is this, a sport bar or a 4-stars restaurant? It is neither. The food was not different from any average restaurant, although they took time for their fancy plate presentation, but you could not fool people. Taste first then presentation, sorry. The food was not as good as it should have been. In fact, the octopus was burned to death, tasted burned, no seafood taste at all and the portion left to be desired. What got me angry (but kept my cool) was how they prepared the duck (the entrée- not the small plate confi). The duck entree was not even prepared the way duck should be prepared. The presentation was terrible. The duck was craved lengthwise given you two portions that looked like big potatoes wedges. What is this? Who is the cook? To start with, the cook should at least watch Martha Steward on how to cook duck the proper way. I will never set foot in this place, (I must have missed the way it was before the re-opening). If you are sport fan and a beer drinker and would like to try wine and would like to look like you know your way to the culinary world, then this place maybe for you. read more
