The store falls surprisingly flat in customer service. Comparing this to the PG Ace further down Forest isn't fair to the latter. While I've found the parts I'm looking for, and there's no apparent price difference between the two stores, I don't feel like this store is a community store but more of a business venture for someone. read more

I adore this old school Ace Hardware shop tucked away in the little shopping enter off Forest and David. My car alarm battery needed to be replaced and they were kind enough to open the sucker up with a mini screwdriver and took good care of me. read more

I admit the service can sometimes be lackluster and the line can be long. But yesterday I went in to have some keys made. One of my keys is for a really old lock and other places have not been able to find the right kind of key to make it with. It took 2 people to find the right one, but they were bound and determined. Foresthill Ace is kind of like groundhog day. Not much changes here. I've popped in on and off for several years, but was left feeling lackluster. The people don't seem to care too much about their customers. Many of the same selections are marked up compared to PG Hardware, another ACE affiliate. And although I browse hoping for an earnest bargain through the remainders outside on the tables, it's like nothing changes there too. Same stuff every time. Anyway, save your money and go to PG Hardware instead. read more

Not thrilled with my latest transaction here. I bought an expanding hose on their recommendation because it supposedly was heavy duty with upgraded metal ends on it. It leaked after 2 months and only has a 30 day warranty. Tim agreed to take it and give me a 10% discount on a "better" hose because he says the one I bought is "garbage". The "better" hose is only $4 more than the "garbage" hose they recommended last time so I wish I would have bought it in the first place! I think they could have done better than 10%. We've been shopping here for years. read more

This Ace isn't the worst hardware store I've had the displeasure of dealing with but they are far from the best. I shouldn't have to talk to three employees before someone is able to answer a simple question. Remember, this is a hardware store. Basic knowledge of hardware should be a requirement to work here. Unfortunately, my experience here seem to be typical of most hardware stores these days. The majority of employees that I've interacted with had little to no knowledge of the product they sell. When I finally get lucky enough to find someone who does, he or she appears too busy (overwhelmed?) to listen to my entire question before attempting to help and I then have to repeat myself several times. I recommend the Ace down the hill in downtown PG. They're smaller but in general much more knowledgable and helpful. read more

Employees in this neighborhood hardware store are helpful and friendly. I don't know much about house repairs, but can always ask the employees for advice and the parts needed for a small repair. They are patient and ready to help all the time. The shopping experience here is much better than in those big box stores. read more

Tim is great! He took it upon himself to help make a part I needed from small round stock and only charged me $5! It got me back on the road with the safety of my torsion bars on my trailer while I was hauling a million dollar car from Pebble Beach. The Forest Hill Ace Hardware is the only Ace Hardware store that it is difficult to get help from the employees. All the other Ace Hardware stores I have been at have people ready to help you as soon as possible and take you to find the product most of the time. The one at Forest Hill just sends you to the isle that they think the product is on. Today I spent 4 minutes looking for a product and eventually gave up and went to find help. ( Other stores come and find you. ) When I finally found someone, they told me to go look at the exact same place I had been looking. I gave up and drove down the hill to the Ace at 229 Forest and was helped right away and he showed me the different sized and styles. It's often quicker to drive the extra 2 miles than shop at my local Ace. Sad. They need a manager that send the employees to the other Ace stores in Pacifc Grove, Salinas, Aptos, and Santa Cruz. The could learn how to live up to the Ace Hardware tradition that their franchise has. read more
