I had passed Fortunato Brothers but never made it in for a visit. However, someone recently told me they had the best rainbow cookies so I had to check it out for myself because I am an avid fan (love me some rainbow cookies!!!). And were they the best? I have to say "YES!". Originally I had asked the sales rep how many cookies could I get for half a pound. When she responded with "6", my thoughts were: "What the...?!". But when I received my bag of cookies, I understood. They were like little monsters! The cookies are double what the size is usually sold in Italian bakeries. We stopped in here after a scalp massage. We ordered at the counter and they brought it out to our table. The marzipan's were beautiful and tasted great, but it was a little bitter. typical old-school italian cafe with lots of goodies! we tried the pistachio lobster tail, pistachio cannoli, rum baba, and hot coffees. the highlight was definitely the lobster tail, so flakey and had lots of pistachio and a just-sweet-enough pastry cream. the cannoli was still pretty crispy and the ricotta filling was great! i've never been a huge fan of rum baba and this one was no exception. it was fine and more of a "me" problem for not liking them lol. overall, really happy to check this place off of my list and will return in the future! read more

I ordered a cake for a baptism and was shocked to find it made in red. I had to drive back from Queens after being told it would be corrected. When I got home again, the cake now read "Happy Birthday" with a cross on it, forcing me to make a third trip just to get the order done properly. I haven't been here for years since I left Brooklyn, but I wanted to buy my mother cheesecake and other pastries. I ordered strawberry cheesecake, and it wasn't the typical cake. The strawberry looked like it came out of can with sauce, not fresh-cut strawberries on top. The cheesecake didn't even taste like cheesecake. The texture was smooth, but it tasted like it was mixed with too much milk. It was very awful, and I was very surprised because I feel they make the best cheesecake. I had to throw out the other half of it because no one wanted it.The other pastries were cannolis, and they were okay, nothing to brag about. Coming here is always a treat and brings me back to my childhood days of coming in here on a hot summer day to enjoy gelato on a brioche bun with my dad. I will never forget the memory of my father and I coming in one summer day to witness an older Italian man order some gelato on a brioche and give out a loud moan of intoxication. I came back after dinner tonight while in Williamsburg. Hoping to give it another chance... I purchased two of their new cannoli filled rainbow crumb cake. An idea, that they stole from Comfortland in Astoria... already a bad start, $7.50 for both. Not terrible for a little treat. They even gave us a sample of bread, which was generous, but it's end of day... so a great process. The staff are always friendly enough. Unfortunately the pastry is utter garbage. I mean it went straight to the trash. As a Sicilian, it's a-front to the very nature of my culture. Whatever is in this, it tastes like a fridge with heavy mold and fake almond flavoring. It's quite awful, even my partner couldn't stomach it. I really was hoping it was a fluke from my last visit, but I will really not be returning this time. Absolutely stunning bakery. Since 1976 they have been churning out delicious baked goods. The store is modest but full of delicious goodies for your next event where treats are essential. Prices are a bit on the higher end ($18.50 per lb for their cookies) but the cookies are totally worth it. What really stands out is their incredible selection of shaped and painted marzipan. All edible but cut into absolutely shapes. I got two strawberries and little banana and it was $9 for the three (I forget what the price per pound was). Friendly staff and quaint ambiance. I AM THE FABULOUS BAKER BOY! A prelude to one of the best bakeries Brooklyn, let alone New York City, has to offer. Brilliantly located in Williamsburg, only a five minute walk from the Graham Ave stop on the L train, to stop here will force you to cough up a few pennies. Only you will be happy you did. The pastries are as perfect as they can be. Without me getting too loquacious, there is plenty of rhyme and reason to spend $80 here. There is something for everyone, which beckons the question, WHY DO THEY NOT SELL HAMANTASHEN? Every Italian bakery knows what these cookies are. They are associated with the Jewish holiday of Purim, but can be eaten year round. For those unfamiliar, they are a triangular cookie with a fruit or savory filling inside, usually apricot or raspberry jam, chocolate, or poppyseeds. The name derives from the villainous Haman, of the story of Purim. They taste delicious and can be served in any size. But to not sell these is a pretty big disappointment. At least they serve Linzer tarts and those are delicious. Soft cookie, lightly dusted with sugar, and a smooth raspberry or apricot jam in the middle. Now you know my favorite cookies. Or some of them anyhow. If it were not for a two train subway ride to get here, I would come here regularly and weigh 500 pounds. They also take credit cards, adding more plus to the poundage. If Cuccio's is my #1 bakery in the city, this is easily my #2. read more

I was at this old school Italian Café and Pasticceria/Pastry Shop after going to a dinner a while ago. We ordered a bunch of things and shared a whole lot. To be honest I'm not sure where any of the poor reviews are coming from because everything I had was very good rivaling or exceeding the best Italian spots around me or the famous ones which are much more absurdly priced for similarly good or worse quality. Perhaps people should stick to their Italian/Italian-American offerings instead of the generic American stuff? To drink I had the/Caffè/Coffee Granita which is essentially coffee with very smooth ice. If you want a pick me up and it's in season, order this and you might as well get it in medium or large as the small size is quite tiny. The coffee flavor is strong and it's quite delicious. For pastries we tried a bunch. I got one of the Pignoli to try along with one of the Pistachio Pignoli as well as a Sfogliatella. Yes the general pignoli are just a bit worse than Ferrara's but the latter costs almost $50 a pound if not more compared to the $28 a pound here and it's not twice as good or even close. Very good quality and the pistachio one is a nice touch which isn't found there. I personally prefer the pistachio crusted version at my local spot Monteleone but this was very good. The Sfogliatella was also excellent. I saw another review on here complaining about people trying to pronounce this instead of saying lobster tail but there's actually a distinction. The long stuff you find in spots is said dessert and lobster tails tend to have a stronger sweeter filling instead of having citrus. Rant aside, it was outstanding. Not overly sweet of a filling with a good pastry which had a bit of a crisp and there was plenty of citron to add a bit of bitterness. Would heavily recommend as well and I know sfogliatella quite well. As I'm not commonly in the area, I bought some meringue cookies for the group. These were also outstanding with a good crispy texture and they weren't too sweet. Would heavily recommend the hazelnut one. Another person had the baba rhum which they liked and someone had a fruit tart which they liked as well. Not much to complain about here. The prices were reasonable and the quality of most of the pastries was either very good or outstanding. The staff could have been a bit friendlier but there were a bunch of us who went back to order more and it was pretty late so it was at least partially expected. When I asked if a sfogliatelle was pistachio flavored, she gave me a blank stare and said it was a lobster tail - not able to make the correlation that a sfogliatelle was the same word as a lobster tail... These pastries are usually best paired with a side of espresso, tea, or coffee on the side as a tea time goodie. One could also get a box of goodies to bring to a family gathering. Perfect for a party or if you want to try a bit of everything without spending a lot of money and consuming a lot of calories. Everything looked very enticing. I had mini sfogliatelle, tiramisu, baba rum cake and a canolo. The sfogliatelle had a nice crunchy shell with nice amount of filling. Tiramisu was moist and soaked with espresso.
