I don't know why I let my wife convince me to take our family there....again! All the food was either over salted, spiced, over-cooked, or just poorly executed. When I tell you the shrimp bar was the best part of the buffet, I think it was because the shrimp was already cooked before the chef touched it. We decided to give it another try from the first time we visited the restaurant almost 2 years ago, because we saw it was under new management and they were advertising lobster on the menu. giving 2 stars because the staff was so kind, but the food/experience was only one star. I was really excited to eat here, haven't been to a proper chinese buffet in years. There seemed to be a lot of selections, but upon further inspection most of it was the same food in different sauces. Lots of chicken and seafood, hardly any beef or pork, and not many fresh vegetables in any of the dishes (there was a rawbar, I got some veggies from that to sort of make my plate a bit greener). I got three plates in an attempt to find something decently edible, but I wound up sending all three plates back hardly untouched. I came during peak hours (11am on a weekday) so I thought that would ensure that the food would be fresh and hot, but it most certainly wasn't. When I started to eat, my brain told me not to continue, because everything on my plate was room temp, and the egg roll was pretty under-cooked. I just kept imagining myself locked in the bathroom for hours if I were to finish it. I got some wonton soup, thinking that would be hard to mess up, and it had steam coming off of it so it seemed temp safe, but the soup didn't have a lot of flavor, only salt, and the dumplings were slimy, not pillowy and spongy like good dumplings. usually wonton soup has cabbage and scallions for aromatics, but this was just broth and dumplings. For dessert I tried a selection of things, and nothing was that great. What appeared to be a variety of sweets actually mimicked the main buffet - just variations of one thing, in this case cookies. The creampuff I got was soggy, and the "cream" was just a bunch of whipped cream instead of the usual bavarian custard. The banana pudding however was pretty good, and so I was able to at least eat something. Looking around I noticed a lot of seniors. Not that I don't trust the wisdom of age, but as we grow older our taste buds are less and less effective. The lack of middle aged or young adults was a big tip off to the palate that enjoyed this salty, slimy, redundant food. Good chinese is a myriad of flavors - spicy, sweet, pungent. It's fragrant and multilayered. Most of this was just salty goop. I should have requested my money back after I failed to eat my first plate, but I felt like I went in knowing it was a gamble, and the young man who was helping shuttle away my full plates was so nice and accommodating I didn't want to make things difficult for him. The best things I had were the crispy noodle strips, the banana pudding, a few slices of watermelon, my soda, and the fortune cookie - certainly not worth the price I paid. Ehhh, I came here last week on a Tuesday because my family asked me too, I wasn't so sure but I decided to go with it. I generally don't like buffets, one because of the quality of the food sometimes and 2, you're seemingly full all the time. Once we walked in, we were seated pretty quickly. The place had a hibachi area, a sushi area, and a couple rows of various hot plates. General environment looked kind of sketchy, some of the furnishings were old and the leather on the seating was ripping and there were paint stains on the wall. Typical Chinese buffet etchings and American pop music from Spotify. The food was okay, typical Americanized Chinese food. The vegetables were incredibly oily and some of the chicken was cold. I'm not big on buffett's, but I decided to go to this place because my family asked me to. The food was not that great. Some of the chicken were cold. The boneless spare ribs were mostly fat and also cold. The egg drop soup was rather salty, so I didn't have much. I witnessed a woman getting lomain with the tongs but also with her bare hands. That turned me off so much and one of the reasons I dislike buffett's because people don't know how to act. Positive note: staff was friendly while we were paying. It's fairly cheap, not sure if it was a lunch price or what, but it was $6.75/person. I'll stick to PF changs. read more

After reading all of the negative reviews for this place I wanted to try the food to see if it really is as bad as most reviewers said it is. The food is your typical mediocre Chinese buffet offering with the greasy lo mein, stuffed mushrooms, pizza, quesadillas, sushi, chicken and mushrooms, and soups. As another reviewer stated the soft serve ice cream machine has melting ice cream which is somewhat off-putting. The wonton soup was good, there was a hibachi table with someone sporadically standing behind the grill. I wasn't able to get a plate from there because there was nobody there when I went there unfortunately. All of the food was on par with most other Chinese buffets and that is about the best you can ask for from any Chinese buffet. Overall everything is decent and I would recommend it to anyone who can digest the typical quality of a Chinese buffet. read more

We moved to Wharton about a year ago and were disappointed to find no Chinese buffets in the area. We decided to check out Fortune Buffet after seeing that it was under new management. It's beautifully remodeled inside, and everything is very clean and fresh (even the bathrooms). We were greeted and given a quick tour of the buffet, then taken to a table and introduced to our server. Nice personal touch! From the sushi bar to the hibachi grill items to the fresh fruits to the standard Chinese buffet fare, everything looked fresh and was well presented. Chinese restaurants are not known for their great pastries, I don't usually eat dessert anyway, and I wasn't tempted to by the selection here. I did sample the self-serve ice cream, however, which was quite tasty. They also had decaf coffee available along with hot water for tea, with the option of adding real milk or half 'n half! Overall, I'm happy to have a nice Chinese buffet in my town now! read more

Don't judge a book by its cover! My mother-in-law brought us here for lunch. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet kind of place. I'd never been to one before. I was a bit apprehensive when we pulled into the parking lot. The outside of this place is dismal and looks run-down. The interior isn't much better. The food, however, was actually quite good! I'm not an adventurous eater, but everything that I got (chicken with broccoli, veggie spring rolls, and fried dough for dessert) were honestly the best of its kind I've ever tasted! For the price and quality of the food, this was pretty good. Which may surprise you, because it rather hidden. I went to this restaurant twice at dinner time. I'm a buffet warrior that usually go up about three or four rounds, not including dessert. Each time I came back to my table with different food to try and enjoyed for the most part. Servers are very friendly and come over often enough. Entree wise, pretty good. There's a large enough selection to please both adults and children. Lots of chicken and fish dishes. I don't eat red meat for health reasons (which totally makes sense to alternatively pig out on fried crap ) but they looked plentiful. There are also non-Chinese food dishes and sides, in case children need simple mac & cheese, chicken tenders, or french fries. I usually don't go for the sushi at most Chinese buffets and unfortunately, this is another one of them. Not necessarily bad, it's just basic super market sushi and would rather save some room for more of the good hot food. Dessert bar was kinda on the small size, but at least the variation of mini cakes and pies makes up for it. Also can't go wrong with a soft serve ice cream machine. To sum up, I'd say this place was a surprise. My only suggestions being to add more to the dessert bar and spruce up the sushi bar as it looks rather slapped in there. read more

This little buffet used to be one of our favorite places to go. Was ok, good price, very happy help, and nice little selection. Now under new ownership and has gone down hill. Selection is ok, dishes below your knees near floor, too easy to get burned getting food from back trays. Now you pay before you eat and pay for water (glass). Not easy for someone with a walker to access some areas and none of the help loos happy. This shouldn't even be a one star. read more

I was weary going here at my mom's birthday request but I had no idea they remodeled the place and it looks great. No only that but they must have hired a new chef because the food tasted great too. The sushi bar is just ok, not bad it fills the craving. Love the lo-Main, green beans, and soft shell crabs the most. Went there for father's day dinner with the kids Saturday night so it wouldn't be so crazy busy. Everything was very good. Service was great. The problem we had was we got there at 8:30. Sat and talked and ate slow because of talking. Well come 9:00 they started cleaning up the food, the desserts and bathrooms. It says they are open till 10:00. Cheap fill-up, food is nothing special. If you like to gorge yourself with greasy Chinese American food, with some weird combos like crab-meat and cheese, then this is the place for you. If you want anything besides endless amounts of greasy, way too breaded, way too sweet and salty food, then you'll find yourself at a loss since they really offer nothing else. We tried this place when they first opened it was very good. Now months later it seems like they don't care anymore about quality. They were serving rotten muscles. Luckily I smelled them before I tasted them. They were so rotten I almost puked. The so called sushi/sashimi is left out all day you can tell by the color it's clearly not fresh. They are currently open under new management. Let me just say that it is terrible! They jacked up the prices and they got rid of a lot of dishes. Not to mention, there was probably 20 other people eating at the same time as me... there was barely any food out and what WAS out, was cold and only scraps were out there. Not worth $17 that's for sure. (Unbelievably expensive dinner for the options that were out). However staff is super friendly and the renovation looks great! I decided to come here for lunch recently after reading about the business coming under new management and being remodeled. Years ago, Fortune Buffet was a regular standby for my family, but plagued with low quality food and poor service. I'm pleased to say that neither of these are any longer the case. The general remodeling of the dining area eschews the old, distracting decorations like the illuminated landscape pictures and TV sets for a much cleaner, no nonsense layout, though it retains barriers between each of the main seating areas for a bit of a cozy feel. General cleanliness of the dining area was good, and save for a somewhat old looking drop ceiling, the overall feel of the place was quite pleasant. This is easily one of the nicer dining rooms in any Chinese restaurant in the area outside of maybe a few more expensive Morristown locations, buffet or otherwise. The buffet area itself has been greatly streamlined to the benefit of the customer. Instead of being waited on at the table for drinks and utensils, you can now help yourself to them from racks of utensils to one side of the buffet, and a dedicated soda fountain area off to one side that includes coffee and tea, all included in the price. As for the buffet, the new management has installed an interesting, undulating S-bend pattern counter into the area, with all guests serving themselves from one side and the staff refilling the buffet from the opposite side. The staff side also includes a hibachi and sushi section integrated into the counters, all included in the price, so you don't have to go towards any special station or additional shopping to partake. Naturally, a lot of the impetus behind going more self-service is to cut back on staff, but given how service quality was a liability for the old management, I think this was a smart move. Indeed, you can tell a lot of the savings has gone into the food. The larger buffet section has better variety than the old one, and while the food is generally only on the level of quality for a typical take-out place, that's very good by buffet standards, and at $10.68 for a Saturday lunch, represents an excellent value for the money. I was also pleased to see that the expanded buffet section includes more variety than the typical American Chinese cuisine; there was this one octopus dish in a spicy sauce served cold that I enjoyed a lot, and seeing something a bit out of the ordinary puts a smile on my face whenever I go to these types of establishments. One complaint I will have is that some of the dishes meant to be served hot (an egg roll I had comes to mind) weren't as hot as they could have been, even though I arrived pretty close to opening time. Management should take care to ensure that food is being prepared correctly, and that warming trays for the buffet itself are properly configured. Given that the only comparable buffets by me are much further away, don't have as good dining rooms or convenient self-serve configurations, and only have pretty comparable food quality, I think I'll be making Fortune Buffet my go-to whenever I feel like having American Chinese cuisine on a budget. Aside from being a little more mindful of food temperatures coming out, one thing that would bring me here more often would be some occasional specials or change-ups in the fare to include some other types of cuisine on a rotational basis; I'd happily pay a premium on lunch for something like a weekly dim sum special to have my pick at a greater variety of finger foods, though I think management will have to consider a stronger online presence for their establishment in order to communicate those kinds of specials to the public (to my knowledge, Fortune Buffet still doesn't have its own website). Even so, the new management has done an exceptional job turning the restaurant around, and I'd happily recommend them over other Chinese buffet options in my area. read more

First of all if we could give negative stars this place would get a -5. The price was $32 for 2 people which I would gladly pay for good food however, this place is absolutely horrible! The food is way less than subpar and the food off the buffet is barely warm. If you have a seafood allergy do yourself a favor and DO NOT eat here. There is so much cross contamination of seafood mixed up in other food that it's not supposed to be instead of separated from other foods like most other places. My wife literally just watched a waitress clean off the buffet counters and wiped the food into her hand and threw it back into the container of food on the buffet! When we walked in and seen only a few people in here it should have sent up some red flags but we figured we would give it a shot anyway.....very bad choice and will never return. Heed the warning! The restaurant was closed for renovations, this was our first time back since it re-opened. The restaurant is lovely inside, however the cost went up and the quality of the buffet went down. Most of the food was dried out (as if it were reheated from previous days), and it wasn't hot, in fact it wasn't even warm. Food is not bad for a Buffett. Seems to be mostly fresh. Chicken on a stick and crab Rangoon rock. Service the last few times has been terrible. Once the server was vacuuming around our table while we were eating. Another time (today) the server was just rude and clueless. Had to ask for napkins, plates not cleared, asked for water with lemon, tea and a kids cup of water. My wife got an adult cup, my son and I got styro kids cups. No lemons with the water. When I asked she point at the Buffett. Would it be too much to ask for her to go get a few lemons in exchange for a better tip. read more

I had been coming to Fortune Buffet for years now, but recently they had closed down little did I know they were closing down for a remodel. Today I visited Fortune Buffet and was amazed and the face lift that had been given to this restaurant. If you have been here before the remodel and have not seen it yet, you must stop in! Also now they have you pay beforehand and everything is included with that price they give you. I went on a Sunday and it was $32 for two people which isn't bad considering it's all you can eat and drink. The food quality also tasted fresher and honestly way better! read more

For years, my husband and I ate at Fortune Buffet frequently and were always pleased. I'd estimate that we went at least two or three times every month. Fortune Buffet was recently remodeled and new prices / policies have been established. Earlier today, we went to have lunch and were told that the purchase of a beverage is now mandatory. Even water and hot tea are no longer free. At the cash register, there are now two signs: one gives the price for the buffet and another informs customers that an additional beverage charge will automatically be added. As a matter of principle, I will not pay $1.69 (plus tax) for a glass of ice water. Before I'd do that, I'd prefer to give the money to a charity! Whoever decided upon this mandatory beverage charge was certainly foolish! We left without eating! read more
