I really had hope for this place being my official favorite in the area, but I still struggle to find truly spectacular Chinese food in the KC area. The general tso chicken was soggy and didn't have any crispness to its outside layer. The broccoli was also limp and lifeless and didn't have any of the flavor from the sauce or the chicken. The rice had very little vegetables and tasted like burnt soy-sauce. The best part of the experience was the egg drop soup and egg rolls. Those had a great flavor and the egg drop soup was a surprise because most of the restaurants here have a horrible smell to their soup and flavor, like it has soured. This is another decent middle of the road Chinese restaurant where you get exactly what you expect from Chinese food in missouri. read more

I want to start off by saying we were so excited to try Fortune Palace based off of the good reviews. We ordered carry out- which is the only service they're offing at this time. We didn't mind because we wanted to take it home anyways. I ordered the chicken and assorted vegetables and my boyfriend ordered the pan fried dumplings. When I got my chicken and veggies it was warm and looked delicious. The variety of veggies was awesome and I think it was the best assortment of veggies I have had in a Chinese dish. But, the flavor was very bland. Same with the dumplings. The interior was really nice and is a great environment for when they open back up to the public for dine in. A-ok lunch here because the lunch Mongolian beef was great... 4 stars with the tender beef, grilled green onions and fabulous flavor. Everything else was just ok, though I wouldn't crave it again: The Rangoons were made with unusually thick wonton wrapper (which I didn't care for) the plum sauce was on the thin side and had little flavor, the honey chicken was too heavily breaded and the pieces a little smaller than I like. The fried rice was too heavy on the soy sauce. It was all edible, but just not great. The service was attentive; she checked on us often, which we appreciated. This is my favorite Chinese food in KC. The food is tasty and good portion size. We have eaten in the restaurant before Covid and have always had a wonderful experience and now they only have carry out, hopefully they will open dine in again soon. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We have called and placed our order and have ordered online many times. We have never had a problem here. Updating my review because I placed two orders of the Black Peppered Beef cook the meat separate from the vegetables. I asked if they could cook the two orders like this: one with beef only and the other with vegetables only. They told me that the vegetables were minimal so they cannot cook just vegetables by itself. I've literally ordered this dish over a dozen times and the meat and veggie portions are nearly identical. I just don't get the logic. I hate to give places low reviews, but this request wasn't outrageous so I'm not sure why there's push back. read more

My mom, my girlfriend and I all arrived late for dinner. I freely admit it was really close to closing time, and that was probably our first mistake. My mom and my girlfriend enjoyed their food, but my entree tasted "off," so I said I couldn't eat it, and I was desperately hungry. Probably had low blood sugar. So the server comes to the table, and she explains that all they have at that point is some egg drop soup. I love egg drops, so a bowl is brought to me. It was pretty cold, but I was too hungry to care at that point. Ended up with food poisoning. I know it wasn't the first entree (some shrimp dish) because my mom ate it without any issues. I think the soup was taken off the heat, and then they served me a bowl anyway after even though it had dropped below Serve Safe temp. The restaurant was pretty nice. Discovered this place on Door Dash, just looking for some decent Chinese delivery. We were VERY pleasantly surprised and now have a new favorite place! We always test a new place by how well they do their "staples": Crab Rangoon, Egg Rolls, General Tso's, Lo Mein, soups, etc. All of the items we tried were EXCELLENT, especially the Rangoon, Lo Mein, and General Tso's. Yes!!! Found a good Chinese food restaurant that delivers to Shawnee. I ordered the hot and sour soup, beef Lo mien and Szechuan chicken. The hot and sour soup was a little bland; but, the Szechuan and Lo mien made up for it. I could not stop eating the Szechuan chicken. The Lo mien had an interesting subtle hint of a smokey flavor. It was quite good. I typically have to add soy sauce for extra flavoring on Lo mien, but it was not necessary. Price was reasonable and the portion size was generous. Ugh, I just hate giving a place a poor rating based on something other than the dining experience, but I feel like fellow Yelpers should get a heads up: We made a delivery order online and received a confirmation saying our food would arrive in about an hour. Fine. We waited patiently, but at about the 1:15 mark I went ahead and called the restaurant. They told me that the order had been cancelled because our address was outside their delivery area. I completely understand that, and that's a fair policy. However - we never received any kind of notification. The order went through just fine online, I didn't see any kind of notice of their delivery range, and their online system gave me a confirmation number. This could have very well been the fault of their web provider, which is why I don't like giving the restaurant a bad review based on something like this. However, I feel like others should get a heads up and not wait for dinner that will never arrive! read more

I came here for lunch, and I would rate the experience as just ok. I ordered the Mongolian Beef, which was listed as spicy on the menu. The portion size was smaller than I've had at most Chinese restaurants. My meal wasn't spicy at all, so that was a bit of a disappointment. However, the flavor was really good and that alone would cause me to consider ordering this again. If you're a sucka for some mood brewing (i.e ambiance), you'll find it here. This is one of the nicest Chinese restaurants I have been to. They really took a lot of time and money to make sure their restaurant stood out from the other buffet jokes. It is extremely large and comfortable and the bar is beautiful. The service was wonderful, in fact, some of the best I've had as well. The food was the best. Their hot and sour soup was wonderfully tangy and spicy it made my eyes water. The lunch specials were equally unbelievable. For $6.95 you get your choice of soup, egg roll or crab rangoon, entree, and white or brown rice. I had the Kung Pao chicken which was very delish. We will most certainly be back in the future. I also saw that they have some sort of Valentine's Day Dinner special that looks worth trying. read more

The place is beautiful inside and they have some of the friendliest staff. To be impartial it was not crowded inside when we went so we were the focus of the staff at the time. We even got to meet the co-owner and he comes from a long line of restauranteurs, and shared with us some of the ways his food is prepared differently. For example there is no dark meat in the General Tso's chicken which is why it tasted so good, and was crispy and not soggy at all. The Crab-Rangoon was also awesome. it was full of cream cheese and crab and it tasted awesome, it was provided with a pineapple bases sauce and mustard sauce. Definitely a hidden gem and not at all what you'd expect from their date, strip mall location. Most of me wants people to know how fantastic it is so it'll stay in business for many years to come but I'll admit that there's a little part of me that wants to keep it and it's cozy atmosphere all to myself. Food: AMAZING fried rice. I'm a huge fan of fried rice so I have some high expectations and theirs absolutely lived up to it. Crab rangoon was delicious, the seasoning on our chicken and beef dishes were outstanding and everything was served piping hot. I don't have a single bad thing to say about their food-- the best I've had since moving to Kansas. Service: The staff was extremely friendly and helpful without being too intrusive. There weren't a ton of people there when my boyfriend and I went but our waitress came by often to refill drinks and make sure we didn't need anything else and (who I'm 90% sure was) the owner came by once or twice to make sure we were happy as well. Atmosphere: The only word I can think of to describe the overall atmosphere/decor is pleasant. It was spacious without seeming too big, lighting was bright enough to see but not so bright that you couldn't have a romantic date there and the whole place was very clean. This place has some of the best Chinese food I've ever had! Every chinese restaurant I go to, I have to order the Schezwan Chicken. Most places either have too many vegetables, or the sauce just isn't right. At Fortune Palace, they have it perfect! The chicken is good, the sauce is amazing and spicy, and they meat to vegetable ratio is perfect. The service is great too. The waitress comes over all the time to make sure you're doing alright and the food comes out pretty quick. The only bad thing I could ever say about this place is that they love to top off your water when it's barely drank out of. It's kind of funny, but can get out of control. read more

Definitely a good Chinese restaurant. My husband and I both had Empress Chicken with Crab Rangoon as an appetizer, water to drink. We liked that the meat wasn't buried by a bunch of vegetables. A nice quantity of tasty battered white chicken in a nicely flavored sauce. And we were given a knife with our utensils and didn't have to ask for one! I think this is the only Chinese restaurant in the area that gives you a knife. Guess the others are afraid you'll hurt yourself, or they don't want to wash knives. ?? Wow. I was blown away by the food, the decor, the service and especially the price. I kind of stumbled upon this impressive restaurant nestled into a strip mall and I am in love! It was nearly empty, so I was not sure what to expect. I am convinced that when more people find about about this treasure it will always be busy. I've had lunch specials a couple of times, and although Yelp doesn't often steer me wrong, I wasn't as overwhelmingly impressed with the food as the other ratings led me to believe I'd be. The entrees I've tried (Mongolian Beef and Moo Goo Gai Pan) were decent, the fried rice above average, and the crab rangoon was great, but the hot and sour soup, on each occasion, was so overloaded with white pepper it was practically inedible--this coming from someone who really, really likes pepper. The service is adequate, and prices are fair, but if I didn't work nearby, I don't think I'd make a special trip to go here. I'm glad it exists, and due to its proximity I eat there about twice a month, but there's definitely better Chinese food to be had at the same price point elsewhere in the KC metro. read more

Right now, my family and I are approximately 5 minutes into our dining experience at Fortune Palace. Their hot tea is very good and the service is very hospitable as well. The staff is friendly; the menu has an aesthetically pleasing layout, making choosing our meal very simple. We decided to order an appetizer of Crab Rangoon, and as for the entrees: Honey Chicken, Egg Drop Soup, and Vegetable Loe-Mein. Alright maybe we're 15 minutes in, and our Crab Ragoons just came out and they look absolutely delectable. 3/3 of our party thought the Crab Ragoons were highly enjoyable, the same for the Vegetable Loe-Mein. The honey chicken was extremely sweet, I would only recommend if you have a sweet tooth. The egg drop soup was really great. Wow. We just got back from a wonderful dinner at Fortune Palace. We arrived about 5:30 and were pleasantly surprised that there were only a few people there. Therefore it was a nice quiet atmosphere to be able to talk without having to hear the neighbors talking. The crab rangoon are some of the best we've had in town and the fresh made pork egg rolls were amazing! The hot mustard was hot without being painful. The Triple Delight was extremely flavorful and presentation was complete with a nice radish flower. We also had the crispy honey chicken which had a wonderfully sweet flavor. They had a basic kids menu complete with a few standard Chinese entrees and mozzarella sticks for picky eaters. The waitstaff was attentive without being overbearing. The prices were comparable to other places. We had been looking for a new Chinese restaurant to frequent and we've definitely found it at the Fortune Palace. read more

Comparing Chinese restaurants has become an "apples to apples" pro-con list. Everyone has the same items, for the most part, and most prepare things the same way. There isn't anything revolutionary about Fortune Palace in this regard. Despite the "different name, same food," moniker, I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality and service of Fortune Palace after several visits. FP serves up all the American Chinese favorites, unlike their close neighbor ABC Cafe (known for more traditional Chinese fare). All of the meals here have been great so far. Chicken w/cashews, general tso's chicken, sesame chicken, and their house chicken entrees are all reasonably priced (about 10 bucks) and come with a generous helping of rice. Again, nothing revolutionary here. Crab rangoons, an extra spicy (pepper) hot and sour soup, and some large egg rolls. One of the nicest things you'll notice about FP is the number of patrons eating in. Some Chinese places rely solely on take-out customers. It's great to see people eating here, to me a sign of good quality and good service. Enjoy a meal here soon. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great expectations as Charles Dickens said.......Sadly, NO :( I went here for lunch and got the Honey Chicken (as the lunch specials seemed to be more American style Chinese versus authentic). It came with fried rice and hot and sour soup. HUGE portions! The staff kept my water filled and came over often to check on things. What did I think of the food? The Hot and Sour soup was spicier than most places, which I enjoyed. The fried rice seemed quite salty and heavy on the soy sauce and didn't really "pop." I put some hot mustard on it to give it more of a zing. The chicken was all white meat which was a plus, but the pieces were small and mostly batter. It tasted like I was eating batter, not chicken. To top it off, it tasted more like honey mustard sauce and not honey sauce on the chicken. It really tasted rather bland. The ambiance was rather plain, which is OK. They do have a few TV's on the wall, but it is all kind of blah. The lunch special was inexpensive (under $7 for huge portions, enough to take home leftovers). However, if portions are what you're after this is the place. For me, I prefer quality over quantity and this does not fit the bill. I didn't order fried batter for lunch. No thanks :( read more

Fortunate Palace's ratings speak for themselves. I briefly got a glimpse of the interior of the restaurant as I was ordering take out, and it is a relatively large establishment. I ordered the sesame chicken for carry out, and it is probably the best I've tasted in KC! It took me about 15 minutes to get home but the chicken was still crisp and hot. The chicken was lightly breaded and was not doused in sauce like many places. The portion size was good and my meal was less than 11 dollars. My food was ready in 10 minutes and the cashier was very friendly. The only reason I'm giving this place a 4 stars instead of 5 is due to my short experience of inside the restaurant. I will be back shortly and update my review but the food here is as good as everyone says! read more

This is the BEST Chinese restaurants in Kansas City. Hands down. I was born and raised in New York, and Fortune Palace stomps on most of those restaurants as well. We're talking amazing. There are so many things I love about this place...I will just list them one by one: 1. The staff here are wonderful. Michael will always make the time to come over and say hi. Anna, Jenny, and the rest of the staff are also awesome! 2. Beef Chow Fun - Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. They always make it fresh and hot. You would have to literally drive to New York City (and sit down in a restaurant that opened before you were born) just to order Pork Fried Rice that could compete with this Pork Fried Rice. 5. Bacon Wrapped Shrimp - Giant fresh shrimp, chewy thick bacon wrapped around, and a perfect dipping sauce. What more is there to say? 6. They have a real honest-to-god BAR in the restaurant. I mean come on....everything I have just gone over....but I can also sit down at the bar and sip on a Mai-Tai too? SIGN ME UP 7. Everything else - Seriously, Fortune Palace eats the other Chinese restaurants here in KC and then SHITS them out. My wife and I ate here Saturday night and were both very impressed. The food was delicious--possibly the best Chinese food I've ever had. We arrived around 7 PM and the place was mostly dead. There were maybe 5 groups of people dining. We had an order of crab rangoon ($5.95 for 6 pieces) and split an order of sesame chicken ($8.95). The crab Rangoon were amazing. They were light and crispy, and the filling was perfect (not overly sweet). The sesame chicken was just as good. Each piece was crispy and break-apart tender. The sauce had the right balance of flavor without being overpowering. It came with a side of steamed rice and was just the right amount to split. The service was great too.
