Super cute local bakery with very friendly (in a genuine way, not an annoying fake friendliness) staff. They have good coffee and a pretty good selection of donuts, muffins, cookies, and other baked goods. I'm giving four stars instead of five only because I'm pretty spoiled with amazing donuts in LA and the donuts here are not the best I've ever had (the best I've ever had is Sidecar in Santa Monica). I haven been making an annual 2 hour pilgrimage to this bakery every December for their Norwegian Christmas Bread (julekage). No other bakery in Northern Illinois makes this Norwegian specialty as good as Fosdal. They also offer other Norwegian bakery treats, well worth the trip! read more

As far as the baked goods go this place is amazing. Everything I tasted was delicious and they seem to have fair pricing. That is until I ordered from their lunch menu. You can get their sandwiches on either a small bun, croissant or bread and I opted to try out a small bun for $3.50. The small bun was indeed very small, it amounted to one of those cheap little square dinner rolls you buy in a package of 12 with a small slab of tuna on it and a small piece of lettuce along with some crushed up chips. I know it's hard to gripe about what you get for $3.50 but this was silly, I don't even understand why they would even offer it. Outside of that things such as their donuts are outstanding so I'd recommend this place for baked goods but definitely not for lunch. read more

OMG! My sister and I took a little roadtrip to Stoughton on a whim and stopped in here. What a great place! Smells like heaven when you walk in the door, and the cookies are the next best thing to homemade! I got fruit slices and molasses cookies, both of which I highly recommend. Next time, I want to try others. What's also cool is that the bakery is set up as a little cafe, with tables and chairs along the right side as you walk in. My husband and I did not want a traditional wedding cake at our reception. Rather, we wanted a variety of desserts for our guests to enjoy. We met with Gigi at Fosdal for a free dessert tasting where we tried bars, brownies, cookies, donuts and pies. Anything we wanted to sample, Gigi brought us. She was very kind and accommodating. It was difficult to decide what desserts to offer at our wedding, but we went with apple crisp, brownies (regular, caramel and mint), cookies (M&M, peanut butter chocolate chip and toffee) and donuts (vanilla and chocolate long johns). Support local? Yes! And do it often! It's not an Italian bakery (sad face) but it gets me what I want without having to go far and they do a great job with it. The counter service has always been polite and helpful, and, like Megan R. mentions, the smell alone from outside the place is a perfect invitation. As much as I prefer to do my own baking, bread isn't something you just make a loaf at a time when you want it. They have an outstanding product, and, when matched with the cookies and small pastries, is a far better quality than trips to Roundy's or wherever just to save a buck. You're not going to find selections as varied as specialty stores (no forty individual varieties of doughnuts or cookies) but they do hit all marks. I'm blanking on whether or not they had cheesecake though...guess I'll have to drag myself down the strip for another visit... read more

The donuts are really, really good and the cakes are amazingly good. The buttercream isn't overly/fake sweet and the cake actually has some flavor unlike most grocery store cakes. Same with the cream they use in their filled donuts - yum! Fosdal's is an old school bakery, and the food outweighs the discomfort of the physical space, but every time I'm there I find myself wishing they would do a little bit to fix their ambiance. The whole set up of the front room just feels disjointed. The space is weird, the tables are wobbly and usually sticky, and the front entrance is dangerously sloped. It's an in and out kind of place, too busy and too poorly laid out to linger more than five minutes. Good thing the donuts are so good they go down quickly! read more

One word: YUM! Awesome, local bakery, VERY reasonably priced and everything tasty and fresh. And fat free of course.... They have many different flavors of Kringle, which are reasonably priced (can't remember price as been awhile) and incredibly good. This is an odd review - it has everything to do with customer service and not their product. I arrive after a long drive to Stoughton - tired, hungry and on a mission to shop and cook dinner for my family. I need buns and love the products at this bakery. I arrive at the bakery at 6:00 pm. Sadly the sign on the door say that they close at 5:00 pm. I glance in the door - see a light in the back with people moving about and a man leaning on the counter. I try the door and it opens. I say -"I know you are closed, I just need some hamburger buns." glancing to my right I see that there are several bags of delicious buns in the display rack. The man at the counter says "we are closed." I say - "I know that - I have cash - can I leave you $5 - I don't need any change." The man says "no, we are closed." I say "well can you give me the buns for free? Tomorrow they will be day old." He says - "we are closed - leave." With that I backed out and let the door close. This is a small town - when did common courtesy disappear? Will I be back for their delicious baked goods? Not very likely... read more

Not only do they have great baked goods, but being a Norwegian town, they also have fantastic Norwegian pastries and cookies! Donuts are pretty good, but the workers are idiots. I have gone there twice and gotten a jelly topped donut, and both different employees had put the donut on it's side in the bag, enabling the contents of the jelly topped donut to spill all over the other donuts and bag itself. Another Stoughton institution. The kringle is fantastic. In fact ... everything I've tried is fantastic. The only caution I can offer is to avoid going in between 3:30 and 4:00 on school days. We drove from Madison just for the donuts at Fosdal's. It's not a trek we take often, considering delicious Greenbush Bakery is close by, but we took the drive on a special occasion. Like Matt W. mentioned, it's full of Stoughton residents, and a table of older ladies helped us navigate making a hot chocolate at the coffee bar (which I don't recommend btw) because the person behind the counter would barely talk to us. The service was actually pretty snarky - not downright rude but certainly not warm and friendly. We picked many delicious desserts from their case - probably too many! - and some rolls. It all looked so good, including the cream puffs, and variety of frosted cookies and donuts, but my absolute favorite is their buttercream-filled frosted donuts. They're clearly diet (haha) and are delicious warmed up the next day too. It makes the drive worth it and, despite the service, I'm rating it 5 stars for taste. It's clear that the people at Fosdal's are fine bakers. It's also clear that they don't think they need to back it up with great service. The rudeness is not a cute gimmick, it's not surly rough around the edges small town charm, it's just lack of manners and basic attention to customers. I have visited five times. Four out of my five visits, they were downright rude and seemed inconvenienced by my custom. The last time I visited I walked out because I was ignored for almost five minutes in the near empty shop as I waited to place an order. One of the employees literally turned away from me to continue working on her receipts. I would return again if someone had simply greeted me with a simple "Hello, we will be with you in a moment." Foadal's is just a classic small town bakery. I can remember it growing up back in the 70s and it really hasn't changed much and that's just fine. Occasionally go there for coffee and donuts but recently bought a decorated carrot sheet cake birthday cake and it was fantastic tasting and very nicely decorated. read more
