Big 5 is a non-fru fru sporting goods store... I check their backpacking gear regularly, the prices can be great, the brands, somewhat unfamiliar... it's not like being at REI. But the Big 5 prices are much lower. I think athletic shoes are a big part of Big 5. Their ad in the Sunday Oregonian is the best key. They have: Trampolines, basketball hoop sysems, skateboards, helmets, tennis equipment, grills, kayaks, coolers, archery, crossbow, a way cool tactical axe, fishing stuff, trampolines, table tennis tables, weight lifting equipment, balls of all kinds, guns, knives, watches, baseball gloves and bats, bicycles, scooters, rackets, roller skates, telescopes, binoculars, sunglasses, tents, backpacks, and a zillion different shoes. I've been looking for a new bike, and we happened to pass this store, on our way home. Their bikes are CHEAP. They have 5 on display, up on a shelf 9 FEET TALL. I can't even TOUCH THEM. But the problem is, I can't sit on the bike. If I want one, they come in a box. If I visit a store, and just admire a bike, and you can't touch, feel, sit, or try them on, it's like buying SHOES, how can you buy something that comes in a box, I might as well buy them online. They should @ least have 2-3 paragraphs describing about the bike! Buyer beware! But that's the way it is @ Big 5. With all the bike shops in PDX, "they just lost a customer!" I come to Big 5 whenever I am looking for a basic sporting goods item. Sometimes I leave happy, other times, empty handed. The big-fizzle has served me well as far as staple fitness items like power bands, weights, and similar go. The shoes can be low-to-mid-range, but the nice part is that you can sometimes successfully barter with them on price. As far as clothing stands, every time I've come in looking for something specific (most recently red pants), I've struck out. That said, Big 5 carries the essentials, so if you're playing rec or semi-pro ball (whatever ball, base, basket, tennis, soccer, etc) you can find the goods you'll need to get outfitted for the game. Shin guards, baseball pants, cups, whatever. You got it. And they carry guns. Sweet firearms. Oh yes. But I've never really shopped this section so I can't rate it. Overall, I wouldn't come here looking for a North Face jacket, but if I join a kickball team, my next cup is coming form Big 5. read more

I had been having a difficult time finding the trekking poles that I needed. A phone call ahead of driving to the store at least confirmed that they hopefully had enough of s selection to make it worth the trip. The staff were all very friendly and ready to help. I found just the right trekking poles, and also the perfect pair of hiking shoes. The prices were also great. read more

If you have children involved in sports, then you must shop here. Great selection. All seasonal sports are represented here. And I can't argue the price, compared to other high end sporting goods stores. Scant selection of camping gear, weapons, and tackle. As an adult, I would shop somewhere else only for more sport specific reasons( backpacking, hiking, etc...). I have had no problem with customer service or any returns I made. read more

This is my second favorite Big 5 next to the Mcloughlin location. It's a good store for sporting items at a low price point. We're a family that hasn't settled on one sport. From Roller Derby, basketball, fishing, soccer, and weight training, we come here for the gear. If the family's interest doesn't last, I don't feel like I've emptied the wallet for the stuff to store in the garage. The staff is always friendly. The clothing selection is okay if all you want are the basics. read more

I like the selection and outstanding discounted prices during their huge (and frequent) store SALES!! I can (and have) picked up a pair of my favorite latest style of Nike's here, during their advertised SALES & never pay more than $49.99..... which is less than half the cost you would pay at your local Freddy's or Macy's Department Stores!! Staff is a little knowledgable but more helpful than anything. If you come here during a regular day without the SALE going...you might say its a tad bit on the high side of the expense stick!! What a joke! I went there yesterday to get soccer shoes for my son. We requested help in the shoe department. The man came out to help by pointing us in the direction of the soccer shoes. He didn't want to help. I had to ask for additional help. We asked what shoe was middle of the line. He showed us shoes that were for kids. My son is a teenager and clearly could have a man's size shoe. He walked in the back while we were looking. We had to ask for him again to try some on. He got a pair of shoes for my son to try and then went into the back again. They were the wrong size. At that point we were tired of chasing for help. Will not be going back there again. I guess they could care less about getting business. read more

The Mccloughlin store near Portland has a lot to learn about customer service. I purchased a pair of flip flop sandals from a Big 5 in Walnut Creek, Ca. They came apart within 2 weeks. I was traveling in Oregon and took them back to the McCloughlin store hoping to return them for a better pair. As I didn't have the original sales receipt the clerk Colin explained that I since I bought them with my visa I could bring them a print out of the sales record and get a refund. Without an original sales receipt I understand that is a reasonable policy. I went to a nearby library and printed out the sales record from the Visa transaction, and brought it back to the store. Colin had been replaced by Amy, who informed me that she was Colins' superior and that she couldn't authorize a refund or credit until she had corporate look up the actual sales receipt from the store where I bought them. My print out of the Visa transaction showing the item number the price and the store number was not proof enough. Remember we're talking about a $19.99 pair of sandals. Amy told me it would take a day or so and she would call me when she got the approval so I could come back AGAIN to get my refund. I forgot to mention while in the store I did purchase another pair of sandals as a replacement and asked if they couldn't just credit me the price of the defective pair, but NO, they had to run it past corporate. I left, very unhappy but was determined now to follow this up not so much for the $19.99 but for the principal that the customer should always come first. So today I get a call from Amy telling me that they could not find any matching transaction with the same amount but would trust me anyway and give me a cash refund if I brought the defective shoes and the sales record I had printed out back to the store. When I complained about being treated like a thief instead of a customer she said that since they couldn't find a matching charge for the 19.99 they couldn't be sure I had made the purchase. I told her the amount on the sales record I gave her was 21.59 because California has a sales tax she said, "Oh, well you didn't tell me you bought them in California". Actually not only did I tell her and Colin that I had, it was printed on the sales record. So out of the goodness of their heart they are going to refund me the 19.99. This is how Amy handles customer service issues. What should have happened was "Oh, Mr ...., we're sorry about the defective sandals and since you're buying another pair we'll give you a credit" PROBLEM SOLVED. read more
