The Wilkes family sold off this greasy spoon (and their trade name) years ago and with it, all semblance of quality. Some telltale signs of greasy spoonish-ness here are: bruised and battered fruit, bad coffee, yellowed mayo crusting at the edges of tuna, potato, shrimp (etc.) salads displayed in the deli case, ancient layers of accumulated grease and soot in the food prep areas, bugs, employees handling food and money at the same time, and a strong odor of bleach. The occasional surliness of the counter folks actually adds character to the ambience. If not for the local high school and elementary school students that frequent this Wilkes spin-off (and a profound lack of competition in this mostly residential neighborhood) it would have folded years ago. The NYC neighborhoods I knew as a kid always had a "greasy spoon" nearby. Today they've been replaced by some sort of Asian/fusion/ramen/coffee/vegan/burger joint. Back when the lower East side was not as trendy a place, the greasy spoon is where many regular, working class folks got some down and dirty bacon and eggs, a quick sandwich and spirited conversation. My favorite was on 15th street off of 1st avenue, next door to the old Stuyvesant HS building. Most mornings I got a toasted english muffin (sometimes 2) with so much margarine slathered on top that it left grease slicks on the paper bag and dripped all over me before I could finish eating it. Gotta love those butter hugging cracks and crevices in Thomas' english muffins! I had a strong, young stomach back then, it tasted good going down, and who knew from cholesterol! The Wilkes family still runs their namesake deli on Glen Ave in Ridgewood but the Rock Road location in Glen Rock has closed. While not upscale -- these eateries observed enough food service details to make the experience of eating a toasted english muffin or a taylor ham, egg and cheese on a roil -- enjoyable. I give this place two stars for the convenience of an occasional bagel or gallon of milk, but check the date on the milk. read more

I am often looking for new places to eat lunch at in Ridgewood because I am there for work several times per month. I came across Wilkes Deli from a Yelp search and decided to give it a try. The place is small, has private parking, and gets BUSY. They have all of your typical deli sandwiches on the menu & can create any custom sandwich/wrap. I am a big fan of wraps so I tried to buffalo chicken wrap which was really tasty. I substituted the fried chicken for grilled and my wrap was made in about 3 minutes. I wanted to try a different wrap the second time I ate here but the buffalo chicken was so good that I got it again! The staff is friendly & knowledgeable.The only downfall is the long line that can form but once you order your food, it comes out very fast. I will be back here time and time again for lunch due to the easy parking and convenient location. read more

A real deli. Awesome place. Nice people. Fresh food. They are famous for their buffalo chicken sandwich. Normal people get it with either ranch or blue cheese. They drench the sandwich in a delicious buffalo sauce, and although it looks messy, don't let looks deceive you. Their seafood salad is great. Their "summer mix" is half ice tea half lemonade and it is another thing they are well known for. Also, any of their fresh baked goods make for a delicious snack to accompany a sandwich. read more

I don't know why this location has no reviews but the other location in Ridgewood has reviews. This is definitely clearly the better Wilke's in Ridgewood. I have a theory that this is where the buffalo chicken sandwich craze originated from but I won't get into that. All you need to know is that this place has the best buffalo chicken sandwiches in the world hands down. I've never been to a place that has come even close and I have had my fair share of good buffalo chicken sandwiches. The chicken cheddar bacon and monterey jack chicken sandwiches are good too but this place gets a 5 star rating on their buffalo chciken sandwich alone. I always accompany my buffalo chicken with a summer mix which is Wilkes version of a homemeade arnold palmer in one of those bucket-like drink cups. Amazing. read more

I am 40 years old and have been visiting the Wilke's Deli on E Glen since I was 2 years old when we moved to Northern Pkwy. No matter where I have lived since middle school I have always come back for the best potato salad IN THE WORLD! Have them make you a roast beef sandwich on a long roll with provolone and potato salad on it and you will float to heaven for the 10 minutes it takes to scarf it down! If you're in a hurry try the ham and Swiss on rye with Russian dressing they have pre-made every morning. So yummy! Oh and don't forget the brownie or blondie for desert, these guys can bake! Great, I'm sorry I mean awesome buffalo chicken sandwich! The sides are good, potato salad and coleslaw we always grab before we barbecue nearby. Eh. I got chicken noodle soup today. The price for a tiny container came to $5.30. I figured it would be worth the price. It tasted like Campbell's soup at best, they even used the same noodles you get with Campbell's which I thought was interesting. The noodles were super soggy and soft since they heated the soup up in the microwave and then I reheated on the stove at home. I ended up adding my own noodles to the soup. I'm giving 3 stars because the guy at the counter was very friendly. I hear everyone ranting and raving about their buffalo chicken sandwhich/wrap so I may consider going back and giving that a try. read more

Not sure what all of the hype is about with their buffalo chicken sandwich, but mine was so gross I couldn't finish it and had to throw it out. First, the amount of buffalo sauce they put on the sandwich is really unappetizing and ruins the food. Not only is it incredibly messy, the sauce itself doesn't taste good (weirdly creamy) and makes the entire sandwich / bread too soggy, and the whole sandwich starts to fall apart. I tried picking up the second half of my sandwich after only a few minutes of it sitting, and the bread was complete mush. Second, the chicken cutlet must be poor quality because it tasted like it had been frozen and reheated - very chewy. Not only that, but all of the breading on the cutlet slid right off, and didn't stick to the chicken. Then that got mushy and soggy from the sauce. Add in a few wiggly tomatoes and some very shriveled-up wilted lettuce - not a good combo. read more

I have only been to this location two times... the first was all about a Reuben on rye, all the way... It was very good... today I had taken the people's advice and got a buffalo chicken on a hero...
