While staying at a nearby resort, we decided to place a to-go order from Foster's Kitchen. After reading a lot of great reviews we went with the cajun fish tacos and whipped goat cheese bruschetta. Both items were delicious and cooked perfectly. The cajun tacos were seasoned perfectly. We love a well seasoned fish taco and Foster's Kitchen definitely did not skimp on the seasoning. The Bruschetta was also really good. We loved the balsamic glaze over the bruschetta itself. I do wish it had a bit more whipped goat cheese, but overall it was still really tasty. We have eaten here many times and had great meals but unfortunately as of lately the quality has gone downhill. We had to send our chicken sandwich back as the cook decided to butterfly the chicken which made it flat, tough and overcooked. I looked down and there was a huge cockroach next to my table. I'm not sure if it was the manager on duty but all she said was "When in Hawaii..." Really? Ok maybe outside but not in a business establishment that serves food. How totally gross. I am saddened by all this. Before the pandemic this place was hopping. Good help must be hard to find there. We came here on a weekday for dinner and there was no wait. It's pretty noisy. Food was great for me, my husband, and our nine year old. However, the service was disappointing. Foster's Kitchen is a very pleasant space - the copper ceiling over the bar is striking. We had very attentive and friendly service. The food was very good - my wife had the small steak and I had the steakhouse burger. Both were cooked perfectly, and both tasted great. We were looking forward to a great meal after looking at the ratings. Unfortunately many things went wrong with our take out order to enjoy on the beach. Bottom line, check your orders before you leave. 1st: Salads we ordered requesting dressing on the side, but came with no dressing. 2nd: Kids menu side of fries was not in our package. Kids were disappointed so I called and went back to go get the fries. Went to restaurant and was not helped for several minutes. And then when given the food, no apologies for inconvenience or the lack of attention to detail and no offer for condiments. Had to ask somebody else since the person who gave me the side was too busy to help and said they will be right back. They didn't come right back... 3rd: Side of fries were soggy and burnt but i I definitely wasn't going to wait again for another batch as I had given up on this place. Tonight was our first time in and the experience wasn't good. If it weren't for our awesome server Lisa we'd probably have just left without eating. Burnt hush puppies w/separated honey butter. "Gumbo" which had a single piece of sausage and a metric ton of rice and celery. No Cajun flavors to speak of and it's clear the kitchen doesn't know how to make a roux. And, pimento "cheese" so thin it runs off a spoon. Main course was blackened Cajun shrimp and grits, Hawaiian style with a fried egg. Check out the pics! Shrimp with no seasoning, watered down grits you literally slurp, and whatever that vomit on top is that was supposed to be the fried egg. Husband was originally delivered the wrong dish...ahi stir fry instead of a salad. That got fixed pretty quickly, thankfully. I should have believed all the reviews here where many date 2+ years stating similar issues with the food. Again, our server was the sweetest, on top of game, post-COVID server we've had the pleasure of being served by. I hope the restaurant can get their kitchen in order! We called ahead to see how busy they were, I was told "kind of busy, but ok." We arrived and it's dead, hostess disappeared inside for 2 mins to find a table, but the place was empty outside and not that busy in side. Went during lunch and sat out on the patio. Nice breezy views. The server was awesome even though it seemed she had many, many tables outside and kept getting double seated. The food was yummy. We had had artichoke flatbread for starters which was nice and light. For entrees we ordered chicken pesto (which was my fave) and loved the crispy toast served alongside, steak house pasta, bbq chicken (they were out of ribs), and the chicken fingers and cheeseburger off the kids menu. Service was a bit uneven our first visit. Did love that the menu had GF options clearly labeled. We ordered the grilled calamari appetizer = $14 for a very sparse amount. Maybe 8 thin slices of flat grilled squid. Definitely priced too high for this and nothing special about it. Would not order this again. I asked for a medium-rare burger (no bun) and got charred medium well. Rest of family was 3/4 through their fish and chips before my redone burger came back out...a bit less done but still tasted off/burned on the outside so didn't eat more than a bite. Fries were super uneven in presentation - about half of the order was regular size fries the rest was just bits and pieces. Three orders came out this way. This happened on our second visit as well where two of our entrees came with fries. Fish and chips was rated ok by two of three of group. Fish was a bit on the dry side. Our server did notice that the burger was almost entirely uneaten and kindly removed it from our check and a nice apology. Very classy move. She was new there but definitely had a good handle on customer service. We returned two nights later and ordered new items. Half order of BBQ chicken with two sides for me translated into a skin boneless breast of chicken. Not sure what made it BBQ - it just tasted grilled. It was dry and again with the odd fries. Side salad was good size that came with it. I definitely would not have ordered this had the menu specified skinless and boneless. I went back to the menu and double checked after getting home. Not sure why they would not serve this with bone in and skin on? Husband ordered BBQ Ribs which came on bone as expected and were quite good. Pretty nice portion as well. Daughter ordered cheesy grits with blacked shrimp which she thought was fine. Nice vinegary greens came in the middle of it. Other kid decided not to try this place again. The service was not friendly from the start. One of the employees was having a heated discussion with the manager or owner right in front of the customer bathrooms about some kind of internal dispute. This was very unprofessional. Overall had an interesting experience here. The food was good, service was good, however we had a large issue with a wrong order. My stepson ordered crispy chicken with no sauce or cheese. We have eaten at FP twice during our weeklong stay. We have enjoyed the wait staff. The waitress we had the second time looked like a young Minnie Driver. Super disappointing experience. Came in tonight (a Monday night) at about 6:15 - one kiddo with two parents. Didn't seem super busy and we were sat right away. Took about 5 minutes to be greeted, which isn't shocking based on current staffing issues I've heard are consistent across the industry. My issue is that it took another 10 minutes for our order to be taken, then probably 15 minutes for my cocktail/milk for our kiddo (missing my husbands beer) and then 25-30 minutes for our food to be brought. The poor waitress was clearly over stretched - she was kind and apologetic. But no manager ever checked on us, no acknowledgement of the fact it was almost an hour between being seated and our food arriving (no apps, nothing special order, no reason it should have taken so long). Food was fine, nothing extraordinary or worth the wait. Cocktail was overly sweet. Skip this one. read more

Then seated us, but 1/2 way through meal she called my cell to ask if we were going to show... seemed odd saying "i am here" and seated.... was on the good side foodwise and wait staff was attentive. But two things really did stand out.. cajun spiced fries were super. Monkey bread desert was excellent. Follow up.., I appreciate the staff replying back so quickly to apologize for confusion. My husband and I came to this restaurant with high hopes, as this is in the Kings Shoppes. It was honestly the worst experience we've had in Hawaii and this is my 7th trip. It took us thirty minutes (once seated) to get a server to our table. Once we had our order taken, we were wondering why everyone around us was complaining about food. We received our appetizers and they were bent to a crisp. Our meal came a while later, the worst food ever for almost $150.00. My chicken was so dry I could not swallow it. Appalled at the quantity and quality of food served for the price we paid. We were told that the fresh catch ($42) would be good for 2 people, and what we received was 3 tiny pieces of overcooked fish with a dollop of potatoes and a few pieces of broccoli. To add fuel to fire, the grilled fish dish ($24) was exactly the same, except it had 2 pieces of the same overcooked fish. This has been the worst dining experience we've had in Hawaii. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Absolute waste of time and money. Needless to say, we will never step foot in here and I would recommend this to anyone planning to come here. We had an excursion so needed a later reservation. We were able to find one here. When we arrived, they weren't allowing walk-ups so we were glad for our reservation. Seated outside, the weather and ambiance were great. There was a live acoustic guitar singer across the way at A-Bays. Service was spotty but they were really crowded and seemed understaffed. I ordered the caesar salad with shrimp. There were a lot of options on the menu but a salad sounded good. Wife had the tomato bisque which comes with a small grilled cheese sandwich. It was my birthday dinner but we couldn't get a reservation and they accommodated us early and we weren't rushed. I recommend this spot. For dessert we decided to take a walk down to the ice cream shop, so I can't comment on that. Bruschetta was enhanced with caramelized onions. Crab cakes were a solid choice but not spectacular. The food was good, and the customer service was excellent. It has a "farm" theme which is interesting but isn't my first choice for a theme if you're dining in Hawaii. Their fresh catch was ono.
