So yummy! My family loves mussels and the Fountain Cafe did them right! I had the Salmon Burger and it was delicious. Highly recommend!!

Please read before giving Fountain Café your business. My spouse had the courage to call out a racist act committed by a server at Fountain Café. She did so on Facebook and Yelp. The owner of the restaurant responded by attacking my spouse and calling her a liar. Specifically, and I'm quoting from his written response, he claimed that my spouse was "untruthful," that her review was a "lie," that she was "making up ugly accusations," and that she was spewing "hateful bile." I was stunned by this response. The owner went on to say that there is "no racist behavior anywhere near [his] café" and of evidence of this relied on the fact that he is gay, has a Panamanian partner, and has a diverse kitchen staff. Because the owner challenged my spouse's truthfulness (multiple times), I responded stating that my spouse's account of what happened was exactly as she stated--I was there (the owner was not) and witnessed what happened (the owner did not). Because of his stated care about racist behavior, I thought that if the owner had confirmation from someone else that this happened exactly as my spouse described, he would take the incident seriously. He did not. Instead, he responded with absolute silence, and sat back as acquaintances of his went after my spouse online. The owner's ad hominem attacks of my spouse, and his silence in response to my corroboration, is completely unacceptable. For these reasons, I respectfully ask that people living in or visiting Port Townsend think twice before putting money in his pocket, and that they please chose somewhere else in town to spend their money on a meal or drink. Moreover, and as a white male, I view this ugly incident as an opportunity to reflect. While it's not always in the form of white nationalists marching in Charlottesville, Virginia, racism is alive and racist acts in communities that hold themselves out to be accepting of others--communities like Port Townsend--still happen. And to excuse racist behavior by pointing to one's own diverse background or diverse friend/employee group is no excuse whatsoever. It's akin to using people of color as props, just as Rep. Mark Meadows did during a recent House Oversight Committee Hearing. This needs to stop. And I applaud and am humbled by anyone, such as my spouse, who speaks up to help make that happen. read more

Overall great experience the food and service was great and I was pleasantly surprised. Loved the quiet and homey atmosphere. The art displayed was very intriguing and unique which made the small cafe stand out as even more different. I'm going to shout out our waiter Bennett for helping us get out the door fast as we were pressed for time and he worked quickly to box everything up for us so we could be on our way. From the unique tasting butter for our bread before the meal to the entrees we ordered I enjoyed every bite and appreciated Bennett's recommendation to get what I ordered. Stopped here fun lunch while waiting for the ferry to WI. Food was very fresh, sandwiches were creative without being over the top wierd. Service was friendly and prompt. They serve the local brew which was great. Interior is small and quaint. Definitely worth a stop and s repeat. read more

What a treat! Cute and cozy place... great for a date night or dinner with friends. The food was awesome... just as one of the locals said it would be! There was s steady stews of diners all evening with just one waitress... but she managed it all... with a smile! I had the duck special. I usually have it a bit pink... but the chef cooked it a bit more and it ( and the mushroom risotto ) was so good. Plenty of food too! My husband had the chipotle shrimp and pasta and he said it was the best meal he'd had in PT! We had salad, the garlic and melted Brie... it was all great! Thank you!! read more

Not a place to go if you are in a hurry, such as a limited lunch break. I had the ABC sandwich (I was in a bit of a hurry and I thought it said avacado) it ended up being a chickem bacon artichoke sandwich on sourdough bread. I was worried that I would need to ask for it to go, ended up getting it barely enough time to scarf down the sandwich (probably way too fast) AND I have to say, it was the best sandwich I have ever Had! I tasted the chowder, it was ok but not good enough to be "famous" as the menu advertised, didn't have time to do more than taste a few bites however, and since I was going to be late I had to go up to the counter to pay. Was a bit pricy for what it was, but absolutely delicious. Definitely worth a try if you have the time. read more

Excellent customer service. The servers pleasant service, combined with a quaint Italian atmosphere provided a delightful dining experience. The food was delicious. I had the Pasta Special of the night. It included a generous serving of local clams, mussels and shrimp. The warm salad was also an interesting and delicious addition to the meal. A selection of wines fit for a king is the cherry on top of a gem of a restaurant. Overall a wonderful night that will not soon be forgotten. Cheers! read more

This is a cute little cafe. The food is fresh and cooked to order. It does take a little time but worth the wait. We started with the garlic and melted brie gooey and delicous. My mom ordered the clam chowder it was filled with clams and red potatoes so good. I had the special salad which had cantaloupe and heirloom tomatoes. It was dressed well. It tasted light and crisp. NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY!!!! My wife and I walked in looking forward to a great lunch today and was immediately told we could not bring in our stroller that had our infant son in. The waitress was rude, made us feel unwelcome and we should told us strollers are not welcome just walked away. We have never been treated this rudely at any restaurant and with this being one out first outings as a family it was extremely upsetting for my wife. The Fountain Cafe is a charming, foodie-focused cafe in a charming little town. The fiancee and I had decided to make a day of touring the Olympic Peninsula area, and were set on lunch at the Fountain Cafe based upon the great things we had heard about it. We started with the mussels and clams, which were delicious. Of course, anything with that much butter and garlic will be pleasing to the palette. For entrees, I had a prawn-stuffed ravioli in a saffron sauce over some fresh greens while my s/o had a warm salad that consisted of greens, prosciutto and some potatoes. The ravioli was great, as was the sauce, but the fresh greens under it seemed a little out of place. I definitely would have traded the greens for another piece of ravioli or two. The warm salad was great to have on an otherwise cool day, and the potato actually worked really well with the dish. Throw in a glass of chardonnay, and the meal was definitely a memorable one. Service was good, not great. This was understandable because it's a small space and there was only one person working the floor taking orders and closing out the tables. As a result, it took a little while to receive and close our check. However, this was a minor inconvenience to what was otherwise friendly and helpful service. read more

The highlight of an awesome trip to Port Townsend; one of the best meals I've ever eaten. Fresh ingredients, beautifully served. Service unfortunately was a bit slow despite being an average volume weekday lunch - it took about 30 minutes after ordering for our two sandwiches to arrive. We ordered the mushroom melt and the artichoke/bacon/chicken sandwiches, neither of which were very flavorful and were a little on the mushy side. Let me start by saying that I would certainly give this place another chance. My food was just ok and so was my husband's food. My sister-in-law loved her food. I think it must depend on what you order. I had a salad and the clam chowder. They boast that they have "world famous clam chowder." I'm sorry, but I would have to disagree. It had a base that reminded me of a creamy Campbell's soup. I have had better clam chowder at my local Whole Foods and in Seattle at Pike's Place Market. The seasoning tends to be lacking in a lot of the entree's. The poor reviews that I have read, seem to mirror what I am saying. Again, I'd definitely give it another chance, but wasn't impressed on first impressions. Booo!!!! read more

This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Port Townsend! On our last trip there, (a one day visit) we ate at the Fountain Café twice - lunch and dinner. Their clam chowder is the best I've ever had and the Scotch fettuccini is to die for. Is the rest of the food on their menu any good? The linguine I ordered had watery, flavorless sauce, overcooked pasta and flavorless "boar." I don't use Yelp all that often anymore, but it was easily the lousiest thing I'd eaten at a restaurant in years, and until the management addresses dishes like that, people should know what a dice-roll this place is. When the waitress saw how little I ate, she insisted that she take half off the bill. That was very appreciated, but even then, the stuff was still overpriced. I must say that I thought it was better about a dozen years ago, but this is still a fun restaurant with good food. Yep, I have to agree with my fellow Yelpers - this IS a very nice place for dinner. The portions were HUGE, noone in our party of 6 managed to finish their dish, yet everyone were very happy with what they had. Moral of the story: if you're not really hungry, skip the appetizers (although they were really good...). Service was efficient and friendly, nothing bad to say about that. The place itself is nice and small, though on a weekend night - very crowded and over-heated, a bit difficult for the toddlers and the pregnant women among us (me). This is why it lost a star by me. A-maze-ing. Every aspect of the meal was perfect. Impeccable service, despite every seat in the house being full all night. A perfect wine recommendation. We started with the crab and shrimp stuffed mushrooms (rich, delicious and decadent!!), followed by the scotch fettuccine Alfredo and the chipotle shrimp fettuccine. Be prepared for a small dining room with ten tables. Make a reservation! Don't be off put by the person answering the phone. Somewhat harried? Or just rude as far as this Southener is concerned. The folks are busting their a**** and working hard to please. Moroccan chicken was flavorful and the shrimp Deablo was more than could be eaten. Lots of pasta and risotto was left on the plate. Huge portions make the food a good value. While waiting for our food we had two servings of warm bread with a herbed butter. Yum. Go and enjoy and help support this business. This place was recommended by a person we met in town so we thought we would give it a try. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night with no reservations. They were busy, but still found a table for us. The menu looked great, but we couldn't find much we could eat because we are on a strict eating plan for a month where we can only eat meat, vegetables and fruit. Dairy, soy, sugar, etc. are all off plan. When we told Nick our dilemma, he was able to adapt several menu items to fit our restrictions. The food was amazing. We had the halibut and duck salad. Everything was perfectly cooked and the flavors were fabulous. Nick and all the staff were friendly and attentive. We had a wonderful dining experience that exceeded our expectations. I want to express my gratitude to the wonderful owner, chef and all others who made yesterday's Thanksgiving dinner so wonderful. The turkey dinner special was incredible - a nuanced presentation of a 'traditional' meal that was rich in flavor and graced with subtle seasonings. My friend and I could not stop raving about the meal and the friendly service. Such a warm and welcoming locally owned restaurant. I am new in town and may make Fountain Cafe my new holiday meal tradition - I hope they're open to celebrate Christmas too! read more

We're locals and although we've had some wonderful meals at this bistro before, we had a terrible & expensive experience there last night on our 36th anniversary. I debated even writing as this place is so well loved, but it just goes to show they're not perfect and can have off days. On a Wednesday evening, we didn't think they'd be as busy as they were. There was a group of 10-12 women against one wall and this place has maybe 10 tables. There were just two waitresses handling the needs of the room, but we were prepared to be patient. This was supposed to be a celebration for us. After being seated, our waitress took our drink order, which arrived promptly. My husband ordered the $32 Ribeye special which included steak, whipped potatoes and veggies. I ordered Tiger Shrimp on Angel Hair Pasta. Our waitress brought us warm fresh bread with herbed butter. Then the wait began, and more. After 45 minutes, we asked for more bread and waited longer. Then the waitress brought us two CHICKEN dishes. When we pointed out that we hadn't ordered them, she said, "Oh, they belong over here", referring to the table in back of us. She picked up the dishes again, but in twirling around, sloshed some of the hot liquid from one dish onto my right shoulder and pants leg. I yelped (no pun intended) but thankfully no physical damage was done. What bothered me was that our waitress heard me and I saw her look over. I know she saw what had happened, but she said nothing and went back to the kitchen. I didn't want to make a scene on our special day and we had already waited so long for our meals, so I just went to the restroom and tried to clean the liquid from my clothes. Finally our own meals arrived, but there were so many onions loaded on top of my shrimp & pasta that I wasn't sure that I had gotten the right order again. It was actually pretty awful. My husband had a bigger problem though. He got his steak & veggies, but noticed there were no potatoes. He had to get up and corral our waitress to tell her. She said she'd bring them as a side dish. They still hadn't arrived by the time he had finished 3/4 of his steak so he told our waitress that he'd pass on them. The waitress said, " I'll take $4 off your bill". That seemed like an incredibly paltry offer after I had to clean my clothes and my husband didn't receive 1/3 of his meal. By that time, we couldn't wait to leave. We paid the bill, and left feeling like we'd just been had. Happy 36th Anniversary. read more

ONE OF MY FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE WORLD. Tough act to follow, huh? It is interesting to think about why I love this restaurant so much. It is tiny but cozy. I feel warm in spirit and body when I am there. I always feel welcome. It makes happy. It feels like home. I fret when I am in Seattle and cannot make it up to visit. In fact, when I think about my happy place, this is usually where I go. l am always lured by the special menu, a salad with the fresh local greens, an appetizer like fresh mussels in an enticing broth and perhaps a salmon entree to share. The flourless chocolate cake is a special take home treat if you are too full to partake on the spot! The entire menu is always creative and delicious. So, lets mix it up with an unusual, obscure and provoking selection of music, a sweet and eager staff (some of whom are also known as owners), a changing show of eclectic art and those enticing scents coming from the tiny open kitchen, I would be dining here every night if I was a neighbor. read more

Very nice atmosphere, but the prices were a bit high for their lunch offerings. The food was tasty, but I guess I expect to be bowled over by a $13 lunch salad. It appears that Fountain uses local ingredients where possible, but to me that's less impressive in a huge agricultural state like Washington. read more

The Fountain Cafe is a little gem in Port Townsend. We had dinner there on a quiet Wednesday night in November. I had the black bean cakes and a plate of plain buttered pasta. My friend had the penne with Gorgonzola cream sauce. The black bean cakes were slightly crunchy outside and very tasty inside. The sautéed vegetable and side salad made this a light and delicious dish. The buttered pasta was done perfectly. The Gorgonzola Penne was rich and creamy. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. read more
