WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. My husband and I decided to try a lunch at the Fountain Cafe based on online reviews, and unique entrees. Sadly for us, our experience was far from wonderful. The average tasting chowder and bread with herbed butter were the best portions of our meal. And I doubt the cafe made the bread. The ingredients listed in the Warm Salad sounded tasty, but together turned into an unpleasant pickled-tasting mush. The Tapenade Chicken Sandwich lived up the the listed order of ingredients. If you'd like olives to completely overpower the taste of your chicken, try this! Too bad this was our last experience in fabulous Port Townsend before returning home to Oregon. read more

There was only one waitress working but it was not as if she had to run around or anything. And she really didn't. My dinner of house salad (earthy beet & carrot ringlets atop gorgeous baby greens with a killer balsamic vinaigrette) and wild (locally found) mushroom risotto was fantastic. My husband's dinner of oyster dorado (read: huge fresh oysters over linguine) looked killer and he gobbled it down. The bread and herbed butter was decadent too- thank goodness we only had 2 pieces each otherwise we would have had to roll out of the restaurant! Our servers were great-- helpful with wine pairings, there when you needed them, busy with others when you didn't. My only issue was our dinner-plate sized table squished against a window, whose street view was blocked by menu postings. What a great find in Port Townsend! It's a cute, small spot with friendly staff and delicious food! The warm bread and fresh herb butter was incredible, and perfect for soaking up the mussels and clams appetizer. We had the special, which was a spicy coconut broth, and it was delicious! I think it was my favorite part of the dinner. For our main dishes, we ordered the Scotch Fettuccine and Aio e Oio. My boyfriend loved his Fettuccine! It had a nice smokey flavor. I added italian sausage to my order of Aio e Oio. However, I wouldn't recommend adding them. The added spice made the flavor a bit overwhelming with some bites. However, it was still delicious. We didn't save room for dessert, but the key lime pie and fresh ginger creme brulee looked tempting! read more

Great food, well curated wine choices, great service. The Fountain Cafe was able to accommodate our party of 16 at two separate tables (we called more than 1 month in advance). They were very gracious in accommodating such a large group in a small restaurant. Everyone was VERY happy with their food choices and the recommended wines/drinks. I had their steak special smothered in brie and caramelized onions which was cooked perfectly to specifications and they substituted sauteed kale for me rather than the starches and root veg that came with. This is a cozy little place, and the menu looked good. Good bottled beers, no draft. My wife and I both sent our plates back as too salty. First time I have ever done that. Staff claimed they weren't and that they had had no other complaints. I love salt so I was not being weird about it; it just had too much. A little frustrating to be told we were mistaken, when we were eating the food. We were refunded for my wife's dish as she had only got into it a bit. I had tried a little more on mine so got half way through. We were charged full price on that. Our friend's meal was very good and appetizers were good except for meatballs on polenta. The meatballs were little small and dry, and not tasty. We were moved on which was totally understandable as they were reservation only and tables were limited. Atmosphere was nice. read more

A nice charming town and a cute cafe to have lunch. Mr foodlover liked it better than I did. I thought it was boring. This is the kinda of food I can make at home so it isn't special to me. In any case, he loved his lamb burger and clam chowder. I thought my kale salad and salmon burger was decent, it's just that we cook better versions at home. There was only one waitress and a full place so it was pretty slow. There were four people cooking so I'm not sure why the food took so long to come out. We hiked Murhut Falls prior to arrival and on to Hoh Rainforest this afternoon. read more

The mussels and clams in a Thai red curry broth were outstanding - a large serving with just the right amount of heat. The salad with organic greens topped with feta, watermelon, kalamata olives, tomatoes and a light vinaigrette - an inventive, unexpected and enjoyable combination of flavors. The duck breast in a fig butter glaze with roast potatoes and beets was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We seek out the best food, wherever we are, and Fountain Cafe is the best in Port Townsend. It rivals some of the best food we've had in Seattle, and other places around the PNW and western US. After seeing the great Yelp reviews, my hubby and I decided to stop in for lunch. The space is small, but decorated nicely with a great overall ambiance. We started off with the garlic and melted Brie appetizer. Very yummy! We received 6 small slices of toasted crostinis that were not nearly enough for all of the toppings. However, our server gladly brought us more bread. I had the caprese sandwich and my husband had the lamb burger. Both of our orders came with the clam chowder. The chowder was a different take on classic chowder, which I did not care for. Both of our sandwiches were very tasty. Service was fast and attentive. I felt it was a bit overpriced. My girlfriend and I visited Port Townsend for the weekend and the concierge at the hotel we stayed at (Palace Hotel) recommended three restaurants. We checked out the menus at each and found Fountain Cafe the most interesting. It was a great choice. Every dish we ordered was delicious and I was positively surprised by the prices (much less expensive than dining in Seattle, which is home). We sat next to the wine rack, which gave a really nice atmosphere and the wait staff was friendly. My girlfriend and I also secretly shared a good laugh when a woman at another table argues with the waiter that the mushrooms didn't taste like wild mushrooms. He very patiently listened and confirmed with the kitchen that they were, indeed, wild. I was impressed with how he handled the situation with an irrational customer and maintained his cool and politeness. We'll be visiting again for sure. read more
