Philadelphia Distilling is one of the first craft distillery in Pennsylvania since Prohibition, known for its award-winning Bluecoat Gin and other so many other spirits, and features a tasting room with a full kitchen, cocktail bar, and tours in a historic Fishtown location. I called to make a reservation for a large party, which wound up dwindling to a small one, and Josh was great helping me with this. When I had to leave a voicemail he made sure to get a hold of me to confirm my reservation. When we arrived, we were impressed by the decor and seating options. Since our party was now small and we arrived in early afternoon, we were able to choose between a high top and comfy chairs. We opted for the big chairs, and had our own small table with mixed nuts, fresh water, and a candle. The service was great, attending but not overbearing. We never felt rushed, and very much enjoyed the Savory Riff and Espresso Martini. We were offered a taste of whiskey, gin, or vodka. After tasting the whiskey I enjoyed how smooth and flavorful it was, and knew I had to get a whiskey cocktail. Palmer was our first stop, and I'm so happy that it was! The owner was very friendly and passionate about his gin. The careful eye will spot his face on the label--which is a very cool label that won an industry award. He walked us through the distilling process, a history lesson on gin and the spice trade, and even threw in a few food/brewery/distillery/cocktail bar recommendations for us to try on the next trip! It's a small craft distillery, with much of the space dedicated to production, which actually turned out to be one of the highlights of our visit. We were given a brief tour, got an up-close look at their impressive still, and had the chance to ask questions about the distilling process. That personal interaction really added to the experience. We opted for a tasting flight of three spirits. Unfortunately, the one we were most excited to try wasn't available for purchase, even though it was the main reason we made the trip after reading about it. Disappointing, but understandable. We ended up taking home a bottle each of their whiskey and bourbon. At around $45 for the smaller bottles, they felt a bit pricey compared to similar offerings from other craft distilleries. Even so, I'm always happy to support local businesses, especially when they're producing quality spirits. The smoked gin is what first caught our attention, and I'm really looking forward to its release. Since the distillery doesn't open until 5 p.m., a visit requires a little planning--it's not the kind of place you'll casually stumble into while exploring. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and genuinely hope they succeed. The spirits we sampled were well made, the behind-the-scenes tour was a nice bonus, and we'd love to come back on a weekend when the atmosphere is a little more lively.
