Best vets ever! I have a springer with allergies, skin and ear issues- Dr P and assistants are all very good with my guy

Supported this business for over 12 years, referred many south side friends to go there, and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars there over the lifetimes of 7 pets. Recently, my elderly cat started developing a condition that needed attention. I attempted to make an appointment but was told that the business was not making appointments and that I could be on a waiting list. Over a month later, I have not heard from Four Paws or any kind of check in. I think its inappropriate to make a human or animal who is seeking medical attention wait for over a month with no contact whatsoever. Called another south side vet and they were to get us, even as new patients, in the following week. What gives Four Paws? read more

When we moved to Seattle 18 years ago, we had to find a veterinary clinic that had excellent staff, from front office to techs to vets and surgeons. Third try was for the win- Four Paws. We have trusted our pets' care to Four Paws for 16 years and have received excellent care throughout. Sometimes the bills were negligible, other times expensive. That's life. Staff has changed over the years but the caliber of treatment has remained steady. A+++ read more

It really hurts to write this but I think the quality of this clinic has gone downhill. Maybe they have taken on too many patients. The doctors here were very helpful and compassionate when my dog needed palliative care last year. At that point I would have said, this is a 5-star place. However I just had an experience of being totally blown off, missed follow-up etc. when I called about my unwell cat who ended up having a life threatening condition that needed surgery immediately. Thankfully I followed my gut and called the animal ER, who heard the same symptoms I had called four paws with earlier that morning and told me to come in immediately. I understand mistakes happen, but the follow up today is what really burns me. I was honest and said "I feel blown off and I am hesitant to take my animals back after this." The response I got to that was "well a lot of clinics aren't taking new patients right now." Just... wow. After the last 24 hours, I cannot recommend this place anymore. I hope they realize what is happening there and right the ship. read more

I took my dog in for teeth cleaning at Four Paws (estimate around $550-$600). Before the procedure started they wanted me to get an unnecessary $68 blood panel screening for my healthy 6 year old dog (we do not even do that in humans unless there is a known medical problem that could cause interaction with anesthesia.) About 2 hours after dropping the pup, I got a call from the dental vet (I think Dr. Jones) after the procedure was started saying that he needed most of his teeth removed. I was told that it could be done in 2 different procedures or 1, but it would cost up to $2000 and if I went anywhere else, it would cost me a lot more. He said they were rotten and the inflammation would likely cause problems with his internal organs if not removed, so I gave the OK. When I got the bill it was $1871.33. I asked how long the procedure took and was told it was between 2 and 2.5 hrs. Itemization on the bill included the following: Tooth extractions were $950 Isoflurane gas anesthesia $162 - I happen to know that only this gas costs only a few dollars for 2.5 hours of anesthesia) Anesthesia monitoring $48 Oral Nerve Block $33 (seconds to perform and costs pennies) Antibiotic injection - ampicillin $24 (that antibiotic costs pennies) Narcotic Pain Med $29 (these drugs cost is pennies) Extended anesthesia $180 (extended from what I am not sure since they already charged me for monitoring, anesthetic gas, nerve blocks, narcotic pain medication separately) Ultrasonic dental scaling $95, hand scaling $66 (he only had 6 teeth left! - $161 for cleaning 6 teeth??) I get my whole mouth full of teeth cleaned for less than that. Hospitalization $30 I understand that vet clinics have overhead etc, but all $1900 for a couple hours of pulling rotten teeth seemed a bit excessive, The dental vet did not talk to me after the procedure (a tech came out to explain things). I paid the bill , but did have questions about the charges that the tech could not answer but she promised the office manager would call me the next day. She did not. So on day 2 after the procedure, I called the office and requested a call back from the manager and was again assured she would call me back that afternoon. She did not. It is now 4 days later and I have not heard from her. I am generally quite happy with the care given to my dogs at 4 Paws, but I am posting this in case you are heading there for dental cleaning. You may be in for an unpleasant surprise. read more

Highlights: - Great, friendly staff that cares about your pets well being - Transparent about costs and they keep it in mind I've been coming to Four Paws for a few years now, and the staff has always been incredibly friendly and helpful. During Loki's examinations, they're always more than happy to walk me through their thoughts, recommendations and why they recommend certain things. Anytime I've had to visit for a semi-emergency, they always make sure to follow up a day or two later to check on Loki's progress and make sure he's doing well. So I obviously like this place with about 60 Yelp check-ins, but I felt it was time to write another review because some things have changed. My old vet is gone and there is a new vet Dr. Hoffman who saw me previously and I really liked her. I got to see her again today with Pugsly and once again I got fantastic service and care for my sick fur baby. First of all, I totally enjoy coming to this veterinary office because everyone seems to totally care. From the moment you walk in you are greeted by the front desk staff who always say hello. Check-in is always fast and my appointments are always very timely. The few times there was a serious emergency that came in I did not mind waiting. When your pet is taken back to the exam room their staff are always so nice and supportive. Pugsly is a bit nervous about getting his nails done but they always try to make him feel safe. They also give him peanut butter which he loves so that helps to keep his focus on other things. I've never had a single problem with scheduling an appointment and they don't mind making appointments many months ahead if needed for regularly scheduled visits. When I have needed to take Pugsly in they try their best to get him in or have me wait. Dr. Hoffman is the new vet at Four Paws and she's great! I really enjoyed interacting with her the last two times I was here. She really is very thorough. She recommended what tests we should take and what would be the followup actions if the tests were positive. She also gave me options if I did not want to do the testing, but I agreed with her decisions since they made sense and we did not know what exactly the problem was. They ended up doing a blood test, gave my little pug an injection as well and some medicine to take home with us. It looks like Pugsly had a bad reaction to an injection and it lasted a week but we will know for sure tomorrow after the blood test. I liked that Dr. Hoffman explained everything that she was doing and why. It was very informative. I appreciate her helping me to understand exactly what's going on. It meshes a helpless owner feel more secure. Thank you Four Paws for consistently providing the community with excellent service. I drive out of my way to bring my pug here and it is totally worth it! If you're looking for an excellent veterinary office you need to give this place a try! Pugsly and I thank you! read more

Worst veterinary place ever, horrible costumer service, and super expensive. Please don't risk your pet by coming here.

They only take cats and dogs so we were out of luck with our guinea pig. It seems excessive to have to drive 10 miles to find a vet that will give a guinea pig antibiotics but the Seattle veterinary scene is cats and dogs only. I had an expectation that a neighborhood business like Four Paws would be a generalist and serve the community more thoroughly. Maybe it's great for dog owners. read more

Q Question with answer? Right out of a movie: the Receptionist said: as I paid my bill in full. 23 or $20 for a nail trim :$23.00 for an anal gland cleaning::$46.00. The owner raised the prices for this procedures.. {{"No one died today at the veterinary hospital"}} today. Stated the Receptionist. That's right. No one died.!!! My dog is terribly scared of getting his nails trimmed. The staff Vet Techs were rough., One tech to hold my dog. As my dog cried &!yelped.,Another vet tech to trim his nails. I reacted: I told them to stop hurting my dog. The staff tech person said: threatening "would you like us to halt this procedure;" NO-- almost done.,My dog needed his nails trimmed & his anal gland cleaned. Because, I tried to get the techs to be less rough I said something not appropriate. Right out of the Theater of Absurdity. I got chastised by the owner of the Veterinarian Hospital. Naturally, the owner would side with her staff.,It's alright to hurt a dog. It's alright to be disrespectful to a dog owner. I would have been grief stricken if my dog died getting his nails trimmed. I love Doctor Miller & Doctor Kline & the Randy. Randy used to be a vet tech for Rainier Beach Vet Hospital previously owned by Dr Douglas Young who sold the Rainier Veterinary Hospital. It was sliding scale. The staff were Ethnically diverse. Dr Douglas Young died of cancer. The new owners were for profit only. They over medicated dogs & cats. I changed Veterinarians Clinics moving to Four Paws Veterinary Hospital. It's about trust. Trusting the Vet Techs to not harm or hurt or over medicate your family member. My sweet beloved dog or my independent beloved cat., Trusting the knowledgeable Veterinary to do the very best to care for us. We were lucky; today. We both got to come home. We got lucky & blessed. Cause I have seen pet owners struggling to pay their vet bill. Vet Receptionist not being so understanding., I truly learned my lesson. Next time the vet tech are being rough., I will ask them quietly & more directly to stop hurting my dog. I will not try to defend him or make an inappropriate comment. For they could really harm my dog further. Or have me arrested. Even though I did ask nicely. I got threatened to have the nail trim treatment halted., my dog is sensitive to having his feet touched. Hummmm won't ever go back. I was a loyal client UNTIL they were not open and I went elsewhere... To Rainier beach Vet. You don't know what you DON'T have until it's gone. At Four Paws - I started to notice the turn over... Never got to see the same doctor. The prices always seemed really high. Last but most importantly totally misdiagnosed my dog. It's nice to be able to walk the dogs to the vet. They fricken hate it though. My old beagle used to start freaking out when we were about a block away. My pit bull/blue heeler, 'Carson,' realizes what's up when we hit the parking lot. I think I acted the same way when I was little and had to go get a shot. This is a great clinic, though. I've been taking my dog(s) to them for years now. First off, the technicians are all really awesome. Carson isn't a big fan of getting his toenails trimmed, and it usually takes two techs plus me to hold him down to get his 'razers' dulled. They're always very gentle (yet firm), talk to him sweetly, pet him, and spoil him rotten with cookies. They keep great records, and call and write to let me know when it's time to get shots. They also call to check up on conditions from previous visits (we think Carson has allergies, and they called recently to find out how a special food they prescribed was working). Recently, Carson developed an eye infection. I got worried and headed over without making an appointment. They took him in, examined him, and set up a treatment, with no hassle (fortunately they weren't too busy). The clinic is always clean, there's always toys and dog treats, and they even have hot water, tea, and sometimes coffee for the less fuzzy patrons. They also sell dog food and a limited amount of other supplies. (If you need more stuff, Ideal Pet Stop is a block North) Free parking in the lot outside, and they take credit cards. Yet another reason why my neighborhood totally rocks. read more

These guys are great. Patient and will fit you in in a pinch if needed. I had a pitbull mix that did NOT like getting her nails cut. These guys were great with her. Lots of peanut butter and patience. When I had to put her down, unfortunately it was a Sunday and they were closed. But I was surprised and touched when I received a card in the mail signed by everyone that had met with her over the years. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Four Paws Veterinary in Seward Park. We have been with them since our last dog, and now with our new pup. Every staff member is knowledgeable, attentive, kind, patient and creative. Our last dog was very anxious and suspicious at the vet. The techs there always had a new trick up their sleeve. I took my 3 yr old pup here for a urinalysis to see if she might have a UTI. I wasn't thrilled to go here b/c every time I've taken my pup for a check up or a health certificate for air travel they try to sell me pills, creams, and all sorts of over-priced things we don't need. As a first time dog owner, I fell for it a couple times and then decided no more. So I took my pup in, gave them the urine sample and they said they'd test it and call me. They called me later that day and said they found crystals in her urine which was indicative of liver trouble and gave me a laundry list of expensive blood tests and liver treatments my pup would have to go through. They asked me to make another appt to get it started. Needless to say my heart sank and my stomach was in a knot. The next day, once I could think more clearly, I made an apt at another vet (Rainier Veterinary Hospital) for a second opinion. While they can't do a urinalysis there (they send out the samples) the vet said that it just didn't make sense that my pup would have crystals in her urine because that is somewhat common in only about three breeds which my mixed breed pup does not have in her. Anyway, he recommended having it redone. He was really great and seemed to genuinely care. I paid for that check up and called Four Paws back. At first they said they'd charge me again for another urinalysis but after speaking with the office manager, she said they'd waive the fee. I took my pup back to Four Paws, they did another urinalysis and the results were normal!!! Turns out they had let the first urine sample sit out too long before testing it and it crystallized. OMdearG. So, instead of Four Paws realizing either they had messed up the test and/or it was odd that there'd be crystals in my pups urine and asking for a re-do to double check their results, they were ready to start blood tests and liver treatments which is totally in line with my past experiences there, their recommending expensive and unnecessary treatments. It was a quite a bummer to think that a vet would be more interested in upselling and making $$ than accurately checking out your pet and keeping it healthy. I won't be going here any more or recommending them. The one up side is the receptionist and the techs are friendly. read more

I've never had more compassionate care and treatment for my animals. All three of the vets are thoughtful and comprehensive will can talk bluntly but carefully about the needs of my two cats and dog. I never feel rushed out the door. Dr. Anderson was able to take a urine sample from my cat while I watched. Amaziing. And that cat also had the quickest dang blood draw I've ever seen in my life. Wish they could do us humans that lickety-split. I'm waiting now for news. I know it will be bad, they've prepared me for that, it's just what kind of bad news at this point. Dr. Anderson and the clinicians were kind and optimistic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And my toes for good measure. read more

We have been getting our dog's teeth cleaned about every 8 - 12 months since he was 3 years old, he is now 10. We switched to Four Paws about 1 year ago and they have cleaned his teeth twice. Both times he nearly died. This has never happened before. Both times they told us this was because he had a heart condition and needed to see a cardiologist, to the tune of about $500 just for the consultation, after the $800+ teeth cleaning that nearly killed him. The most recent time this happened, we went to pick him up and the vet would not come out to speak to us, he made the vet tech bring our dog out. And I saw him there, so I know he was still in the office. They never mentioned the heart condition again. Just gave us our dog, took our money and sent us home when 4 hours prior they were calling us and telling us our dog might die. Does he really have a heart condition? I don't know. Is he just having a hard time with anesthesia because he is older? Maybe. But the 8 months prior to the first time this happened at Four Paws, he got his teeth cleaned at a different vet and there was no problem. And they never told mentioned any heart condition that required seeing a cardiologist. The fact that the vet wouldn't come talk to us in person after the whole ordeal makes me not trust them. I recently moved to Seattle and the thing I dreaded the most was finding a new vet for my dog Maple. I took a chance and went to Four Paws. So far, I have not been disappointed! We have been a few times now but after our most recent experience I knew I had to write a review. Maple was really sick and throwing up all night. We didn't know what was wrong, but we were so worried. We took her to Four Paws first thing in the morning even though we didn't have an appointment. We had to wait a little bit, but they managed to squeeze us in. Dr. Kevin Reed and the vet techs were all so awesome and kind. They ran a whole bunch of tests and were able to diagnose Maple's issues in no time. They were also very upfront about the costs for all of the tests, which I thought was super considerate as most vets don't tell you these things until after they do them. Long story short, Maple was back to her old self a day later. Yay! Thanks Four Paws! Oh, and one more thing: they always call and check-in with you to see how your animal is doing the next day. My step-cat, Grace, is a biter. She doesn't appreciate being poked or prodded or cooped up in a little cage in the car. She doesn't, according to her daddy, take pills. Period. This morning I took her in to Four Paws. She liked watching the water feature in the waiting room, and the receptionist is the most soothing person ever. I worried once we were back in the exam room, but no problem. They got her out of the crate, weighed and examined her, and listened to her pathetic wheeze, all without the tiniest attempt at violence from either party. What's more, they had her purring. Purring! Either she's mellowing in her old age, or those Four Paws people have the magic touch. Plus, they made her asthma medicine a meat-flavored liquid instead of nasty old pills. read more

After some problems with my dog's paws, I decided to visit Four Paws to get a second opinion from a previous vet that we'd used. I've only visited once, so I will keep my review updated upon future visits, but I was able to get in right away (I was able to snag someone's cancelled appointment) with Dr. Reed and the technician Stacey. I instantly felt that we were in the right hands. I am happy to say that Dr. Reed was comfortable and easy with my dog right off the bat (she can be afraid of men and is a large Staffordshire terrier, people can be afraid of them, even though all the Staffies and pits I've met are big balls of kisses). Both Dr. Reed and Stacey had her in a playful mood and on her back for belly rubs (!), which NEVER happens at the vet. This in itself was pretty impressive. Dr. Reed took the time to familiarize himself with Amber's file (we'd never been to this vet before, since moving to a new neighborhood), and noticed a previous ailment that could be connected with her paw problem. After 3 visits elsewhere, this was the first time someone had noticed this. I felt that pricing was good, the front staff was nice, the offices are clean and conveniently located to other stores -- hey, you can hit PCC on the way home! Alos, Four Paws has a parking lot, so there's no trickiness parking. read more

They are sooooooo loving to animals - which is very good, since this business is focused on animal care. Wink. We take both our elderly dogs, a Shih Tzu (17 years) and a Shiba Inu (13 years) there for shots, any concerns we have going on, etc. I've always been happy with the results, the care, and the recommendations, so will faithfully take our fur children here continually. I do cringe though every time it seems they really push the $450 dental cleaning for the dogs... every time. It just comes off weird.... I don't know. The staff is super amazing awesome. read more

And as an additional bonus - one of the tests I had done was 1/10 of the price that was done on my dog last week at VCA in West Seattle. I moved to Seattle in February with the wife and 2 dogs (a German Shepherd and a Lab mix), and needed to find a vet for routine checkups, shots, etc. My wife took the shepherd to another vet to check the out (I think it was Rainier), and after her visit she said "No way". I don't think there was anything particularly awful, she just wasn't comfortable with the vet. It happens. Then we had to go out of town, and I needed a checkup for the lab. Since Four Paws is about 2 miles away, I made an appointment. Cooper and I went to get checked out, and the place is great! The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the vet filled me in on all the details of the why's and how's of pet care in the PNW. Not being from around here, I found things are done differently (like, no Lyme's disease, etc), and I had no clue going into the appointment. Being new to the area, they also printed out a 4 page listing of kennels in the area, and the vet tech sat down with me and hi-lited her favorites. She had personal knowledge of at least 6 of the kennels on the list, and she told me the style of each. I didn't think the cost was that bad, personally. I moved here from back east, and I thought the cost of the checkup was on par with our old vet. Long and short, both my dogs are patients. Woof. read more

The folks here seem friendly enough. And I must admit to extreme pickyness with regard to the vet I use for my very scaredy cat. But, pretty much I didn't feel like they really chose to investigate her issue. They wanted to send me off to a specialist with her. Well, she HATES to travel and since they are only a few blocks away from me I managed to get her up here twice. They just didn't seem to get the pain of getting her up there either. I dunno. I think I wanted a miracle and they didn't provide it. I have a friend that had a really great experience with them. So, these guys might be perfect for you. read more

Dr. Olson has been ok for our cats since she's nice, explains everything thoroughly, and follows up in a timely manner. We saw Dr. Anderson once for an issue not related to weight, and she was adamant that our cats should only eat 1/4 cup of food per day. They're both around 13 lbs. So I took that suggestion for both of them and they both developed health issues soon thereafter. They may or may not be related but I find it odd that two perfectly healthy cats now have problems that I need to manage for life when the only thing that changed was the amount of food they ate each day. I of course later confirmed that cats this size should each have a whole can or 1 cup dry per day. I refuse to see Dr. Anderson again; she doesn't know what she's doing when it comes to cats. Front desk staff is always very friendly and helpful. However, most of the vet techs are young and seem very inexperienced. The last tech who did a blood draw for one of our cats had to give him 3 pokes with 2 different needles and still could not get enough blood. She also wounded him--he bled profusely from the injection site when she was finished. My cat understandably hates the place now and cries non-stop as soon as we enter. FYI, a vet exam (that usually lasts 5 minutes) will run you about $50. A feline blood screen will cost you $125. Drugs seem to be reasonably priced, but beware that there is a "minimum cost" on some prescriptions and you'll pay for it even if you don't need as many pills. read more

Closest vet, came reccomended. I felt a strong "upsell" in our consultation...and after the visit, we were $300+. yikes. But our cat is a special one, so why not? The vet personally called to give test results, I commend that. All aces. Supplements are priced about $15 extra then online & was annoyed when I learned how much more I paid. If I could rate based on each veterinarian, I'd rate Dr. Carson higher and Dr. Jones lower. Dr. Carsen was great with my dog, Penny. She curled next to her and was not startled by her size. Dr. Jones was awful with my cat, Horace. He started diagnosing the problem even before he had looked at the cat, who was hiding under the counter. His bedside manner was atrocious. Four Paws is totally out of my way, in a completely different neighborhood, 20-something minutes away, and despite having several, more conveniently located vet clinics at my doorstep, I take my pets to Four Paws. I have somewhat of a special needs dog- a nearly blind, skin-problem suffering, kidney compromised, senior Yorkie. Four Paws provides me with everything I am seeking in a vet- a constructive, personable and compassionate experience with caregivers in which I wholeheartedly trust with the lives of my precious furry children. We recently moved to Columbia City and this place was suggested by a neighbor and I am so glad I used Four Paws! Jake, our cat, had an in-grown nail that was piercing his pad(turns out he had two). My wife and I attempted to relieve him of this malady with no luck. I called Four Paws, had to leave a message describing my issue, was called back within an hour by Jenny and she was soooo nice. We discussed options, told me that the doctor just left for lunch and that she would talk with the doc for further suggestions and would call back. We weren't sure what condition Jake's pads would be like after the nails were pulled out. Called back within an hour to say to bring him in to have a tech look at them and if need be see the doctor for further action if things were bad. We get there and the staff was super friendly and I was already thinking that our experience was going to be a good one based solely on my phone call the day before with Jenny. They did not disappoint. Long story short: They Clipped the nails, dealt with the in-grown nails like it was nothing(turns out they weren't as bad as we thought). The whole time giving us suggestions on how to clip them(Jake wears soft paws) because we were not doing it correctly apparently. And Jake only hissed a couple of times to boot! The office manager at Four Paws, Paige, both called and wrote me to say she had read my review and was deeply concerned about what had happened. I've known both her and the founding vet, Dr. Perotti-Orcutt, for years and Paige's concern was not only sincere, but troubling enough for her to investigate the occurrences, run the staff through various what-if scenarios and put some new procedures in place. I think Four Paws had become so reliant on their previous super-receptionist that they did not fully address any of the new employees' readiness to handle all situations. The receptionist/intake position is probably the most difficult and important job of all, so if things don't go well at that point, everything falls apart. Paige has convinced me they are now ready and fully prepared for whatever comes their way, even if it's to facilitate the transfer to an emergency vet. In no way did I mean to disparage the vets and technicians of Four Paws. I've had excellent experiences with every vet that's worked there and they've been just as caring and skilled as Dr. Perotti-Orcutt. I was able to happily tell Paige that I got over my anger and yes, Four Paws is still our regular vet. The important lesson is, in case of an emergency, don't even think about calling or stopping anywhere, just go straight to your 24-hr. vet that has the schedule, equipment and most of all the personnel to deal with your pet's emergency. Figuring out who your emergency vet is and where they're located is a critical part of being a good pet owner. Compile a short list, check out the reviews on Yelp (I've written a few) and when you select your emergency vet, burn the information into your brain so it'll be ready when you need it. read more

Just moved to the Columbia City 'hood, and since the pets' current Vet is on the far Eastside, I thought I'd give Four Paws a try after reading all the great views on Yelp. I was able to schedule an appointment on short notice, and when I arrived the person at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. They had already contacted my previous vet for the dog's records and were already fairly familiar with my dog's medical history. The dog and I met with a Vet (Dr Carlson, I think, who was very friendly, as was the Vet tech who also came along) who gave the dog a good once over before telling me what I already knew and prescribing exactly what I expected. Dr Carlson made an attempt to connect with my dog and I was pleased that she made an effort to not only get to know my dog, but to actually talk to me about my dog and his health, instead of talking 'at' me like a lot of Vets do. Also, the charges were quite reasonable, and cheaper than my old vet on the Eastside. All in all, it was a good experience and I'll definitely be back. read more

I can't say enough about how courteous, thoughtful and helpful the staff at Four Paws are. We've always had a good experience there and that's why we continue to take our dog Pepper and cats Johnny and Donna; along with whichever animal we might be fostering at the time (Double FF). -reasonably priced -convenient -clean -friendly Btw, you can't go wrong with Dr. Reed. Great service but definitely comes at a cost. I have found that I can save a lot of money taking my dog to a Vetco at Petco.

Simply the best, what more can I say they have seen me and my pups thru so many things from dog bites to liver care issues to nurturing the newly adopted pup and owner. I cannot say enough good things about them, they have cried with me over the loss of my Daley and laughed with over my Lilly and her issues and those sad eyes. They patched up Hank and Alex and did so with all there heart and soul. Thank you for always being there and taking the worry out of my caring for my best friends. read more
