For living out of town, I am a regular. Breakfast is always good. Their corn-beef hash is home-made right there and is the finest. Pancakes are light and tender. At lunch I have yet to get by past their burgers. Really good and pattied there so it is safe for me to get mine medium rare. I love their home made potato salad, but you may not like it. Another great Yelp find for brunch! So even though the line was long and out the door...they had a small coffee stand outside for you to get caffinated while you wait.The line moves quick...so you don't have to wait too long. The food is great! Its pretty much Diner, but with more taste and flavors and less grease. I got the corn bean hash and eggs. This is probably one of the best places for breakfast. Very small inside but we luckily found a booth. Good classic rock playing and awesome retro decor. Staff was friendly and helpful. I tried the Hawaii 5-0 omelette with fruit and a biscuit. The biscuit was amazing. Not dry at all and very fluffy. The omelette was packed with ham, onions, and pineapple and lots of yummy Provolone cheese. Fruit was normal cantaloupe and honey do melon. Now I have seen the Fox and have read a bunch of reviews. Yesterday we had the chance of going to The Fox and eat. We have eaten accross the street before and after we wish we would have gone into the Fox. It was a little crowded but we got to sit outside and had a chance to watch the people of Avondale. So we ordered the egg, cheese and sausage sandwich and the Corned beef hash with eggs. I always check the sausage an a sandwich is the best way. The Fox pasted the test but the best part of the meal was the hash the wife absolutely loved it. Enough she woke up a half n hour before the alarm (she never does that) clock so we can drive all the way back for breakfast. I really liked this place. It's just as great as Cool Moose but the service is way way WAY better. They're friendly and quick and patient. The ambiance is nice... very nostalgic. Had the waffle breakfast, per the suggestion of other reviewers. Yes, the waffles were good but they were waffles... hard to mess it up really... and nothing exceptionally special about them. They were nice enough to replace the grits with a biscuit, which I had to try due to the other reviewers. I must say that it was delish... flaky and tasty and I wish I had another one. It's true. Everyone does love the Fox. It's your run of the mill diner in a lot of ways, and honestly, I can't really pinpoint what it about this place that really gets people's motors going, but it does. People really love the Fox! The food is good and the servings are big. The food is really pretty standard. Salty, greasy, filling. But there is something in the small building's innards that is unique and sets this place apart. The decor is old fashioned with a hipster touch. The booths are leather and the counter curves around the narrow kitchen [the exposed part at least]. It just looks like a fun place to sit and eat. I'm not totally convinced that people don't love this place simply because people love this place. It's really good, but its a diner and it has what every diner has. The coffee is good. The food is flavorful. The prices are right. The wait is long. But, it's worth it. read more

I had brunch with a few friends today, and I was pleased with the really excellent service from both the Host, and our Server, however I wasn't as impressed with the quality of the food. I had read and heard some really excellent reviews about Fox, and frankly I was disappointed. I ordered the Ortega omelette which has chorizo, salsa and a few other veggies. I was mainly interested in the chorizo. Most omelettes and skillets I've ordered with chorizo come with a ground sausage that's swimming in grease and sauce, and usually very flavorful and spicy. The chorizo Fox used tasted more like smoked sausage and was really lacking in the flavor department. After having been I realize now that Fox is more of a mom and pop kind of place without the frills and no nonsense. If that's the kind of place your looking for, look no further. You definitely are getting what you pay for. I see why Fox has such a loyal following, the service is really great, but overall for me to become a loyal customer the food has to be level or better than the service, and unfortunately Fox just doesn't make the cut. read more

The only downside (if there is one) is they close after the lunch rush. I can't tell you how much of a bummer it is when you show up to find out it's closed. Super sad day. Oh, The Fox... this is the best hole-in-the-wall joint in Jacksonville, located on the strip in Avondale. The breakfast and lunch fare are both amazing. I routinely grab a burger here; my current flame likes the club. The menu is formidable for such a place, so there's always an opportunity to try something new. I've been with kids, to whom the wait staff is especially attentive. It's definitely a place you have to hit. It should be noted that they close after lunch. There is no dinner here. There is almost always a line out the door, but don't let that turn you away. It moves quickly. As mentioned in other reviews, the locals of the area definitely frequent the place. I would begin by saying that, if it were not for my most recent experience at The Fox, I would rate it higher. In the past, I always had great experiences at The Fox. That is why I brought a friend from Naples, Florida to enjoy brunch there. The experience was horrible. The waiter practically ignored us. And, when he did help, it was to throw butter on our table like he was angry. I called later to complain but got the brush off. I suppose when a place is popular, they can write off as many customers as they want because there are many more available to take their place. I LOVE THE FOX!! I moved to Jacksonville about 6 years ago and found out about the fox about 3 years ago. I wish I knew about it long before. I have only had the breakfast here. The pancakes are to die for! The french toast os average. Tge inlets are great! The "honkey tonk" is fantastic as well as the "Ortega". The free coffee while waiting in ling is a good plus and meeting new people while waiting is always fun. The longest I've waited wad about 15-20 min but it's totally worth it. Also my 2 year old daughter loves it. The staff not only caters to us but pays a little extra attn to my daughter as well. This place is a must try fir everone!!!! read more

I have gone to the fox twice for breakfast so far and both times I really enjoyed the food and loved the atmosphere. The first time I ordered the "honky tonk" omelette which has some vegetables and sausage covered with sausage gravy. I requested egg whites be used, but when they brought it, they used regular eggs so they had to remake it. It wasn't a big deal but it did take away from my experience so I had to take off a star. They did comp my coffee though. Once it came out correctly I really liked it. I especially liked the gravy and biscuit it came with, but the home fries were kinda bland and barely warm. Another reason I took off the star. Second visit I got the pancake breakfast with choco chips in them along with a couple eggs and turkey sausage. The pancakes were delicious and definitely my favorite part. Sausage was okay, eggs were cooked perfectly, and again home fries were just warm. Service was excellent. Overall I really like this place for the food, affordable prices and friendly staff, and I'm sure it's gonna be in my regular breakfast rotation. read more

This is a nice breakfast joint we found on yelp when in Jacksonville. Its a small breakfast and lunch cafe with old memorabilia on the walls. Nothing fancy, kind of a blast from the past! They actually have really fresh tasting coffee, they grind beans fresh. We had breakfast and all had different things and all was fresh and tasty! Great job Yelp! Great find. About 6 months later we were traveling from Florida to North Carolina and we took a 45 minute detour just to eat here. We had lunch this time and we all had something different again. This was arguably the worst I have ever heard of a restaurant acting while serving customers. Being someone who works in the restaurant industry/customer service as well, I was appalled to hear about the lack of care both the servers and managerial staff took when helping customers. I understand that y'all can get busy, but that should not permit staff members to be verbally rude and disrespectful to customers. Ultimately, the customers are the ones paying so if they want a napkin to clean up condensation from their water, then walk over to the bussing station and get just that....with a smile on your face. We came here for breakfast on a Friday morning. We got there just before the crowds did, so we got seated right away. It has a cool, unique ambience with a nice local feel. It was nice that my brother (who works the night shift) was able to get "dinner" while we got breakfast. The food was good, though not outstanding. I had the Greek omelet (Spinach, feta, tomato, and red onion). It came with a biscuit and a choice of fruit or home fries. I chose fruit, expecting it to be a little fruit salad. It turned out to be just a small bowl of sliced bananas, which I thought was kind of odd. The biscuit was disappointing to me, I guess I was expecting a buttery, salty biscuit (like Popeye's or The Cracker Barrel) but it was kind of bland. The omelet was good. Coffee was very good. Service was decent, though toward the end of our meal I did feel a little rushed by the waitress. I guess she was trying to move us through because of the line forming out the door. BUT- they should fix the building, it doesn't look like it would pass inspection. Although there lots of cute, kitschy stuff displayed on the walls, the ceiling is jankie, dirty, and looks like it's gonna come down any minute. One of my pet peeves is he a/c directly blowing onto the tables, and they had that here though not as bad as I've felt in other restaurants. Comfortable booth or counter seating. This was my second time at Fox Restaurant and I can guarantee that it will be my last. We arrived for breakfast on Sunday morning at 7:45am only to find out that the place didn't open until 8:00. We unfortunately did decide to wait for the restaurant to open. At a few minutes before the top of the hour, one of the waitresses stood on the inside of the door & I swear I watched her look at her phone every couple of seconds to check for the time to strike 8 rather than to actually open the doors & let the patrons outside find a seat & get settled in. I just thought that was so ridiculous! The others outside didn't seem to mind & acted like this was a regular occurrence. They obviously come often & are used to this. Once we found a table, a very unfriendly waitress came over & took our drink order. Once our drinks were delivered I had to ask for cream for my coffee & a straw for my water. She acted as if I had asked for her first born child or something. I don't think I should have had to ask for these items in the first place. Sheesh! VERY unfriendly chick. We placed our food order in which my boyfriend asked for a biscuit, egg, cheese & bacon sandwich and had requested that it be served in a bowl with some sausage gravy on top. She continued her attitude & told us that she would bring the sandwich with a SIDE of gravy (like we didn't want to pay for it or something) and he could fix it himself. Looking blankly at each other, he agreed since that is his favorite thing to have for breakfast. I ordered an omelette. When we were waiting for our food she brought a refill for my coffee & asked if I wanted more cream. Given the fact that she only brought two for my first cup, I said yes. Again she made it seem like such a burden but did bring me only two more creamers. The food was delivered by another server & I can only say that it was not good food. My omelette was completely dry and my boyfriend said the sausage gravy tasted like old grease. Great food, great service, an. Table had: Waffle breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. Pancake breakfast with medium eggs, sausage, and fries. Honkey Tonk omelette with fries and toast. Biscuits and gravy. All cooked very well, came out hot at the same time, and, get this, seasoned! Server was very attentive and nice. Owner/manager on site, working hard, and having fun. All meals were about $10 and heartily portioned. UPDATE So I've dined here several times over the past year and usually have a positive experience. When the owner/operator is on deck, the controlled chaos runs well with the service and food hitting on all cylinders. Unfortunately today he was busy with other things and the female that is in charge runs it much like her personality. Mediocre. Medium eggs arrived with runny whites. Tried but couldn't do it. Something about raw, runny egg whites is just revolting. No worries. It happens. So I brought it to my server's attention, who is normally awesome, and gave her my plate. I watched as the female in charge smirked and then raked my home fries and bacon off to another smaller plate. Which the server then brought back. Didn't see the server again, which is hard to do in such a small place, until she had my new eggs. Maybe it's just me, but now the potatoes and bacon are cold. Not gross but if I'm paying for a fresh, hot and served meal, I'd like it all to be fresh, hot and served. I explained to the server that I had tried to find her sooner to say never mind on the meal and that she can just take it off. She was pleasant and asked if I was sure. Then I didn't see her again. Avondale's The Fox Restaurant is one of those places I've walked by a million times and always thought, "Man, I need to try that one." I add it to my mental list, and it gets lost in a blackhole (this happens a lot with restaurants). I always seem to forget about it! We got there fairly early (think 8:30ish) and were immediately seated. I immediately liked that the options of the menu - it wasn't just huge breakfast after huge breakfast like so many other places. Since I wasn't in the mood for a lot of food, I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. Simple. Tasty. I approve. Sometimes you just need the basics. The biscuits were flaky and fresh. The bacon was crispy. The cheese was delicious melted cheddar. I was in my happy place. The Fox is a classic breakfast spot that just does it right - nothing fancy. It's just breakfast. First time visiting the fox restaurant which came with many recommendations for visiting the iconic restaurant in the Avondale area. When entering the almost full restaurant a gentleman welcomed us and told us he had a seat for us. We went straight in and had a seat. Waitress seemed to need some more training. The visits to our table was few and far between. Had to ask other staff members for different items. When ordering my breakfast I asked if I could replace eggs with anything, due to not eating eggs. Waitress said I could replace them with any side item. So I replaced the eggs with some corn beef hash. When we received the check the waitress had charged me the full price for the item instead of replacing the item. And when asked about it she stated I gave you a discount. ($.50) then when I was completing my check the gentleman who welcomed us told the waitress well I feel like you burnt your tip on that one. Waitress didn't seem Once again food was good but not worth the sacrifice of the service. read more

Suggestions: Omelettes or Waffles Price: $8-$10 per plate Pros: Pretty good breakfast, relatively inexpensive Cons: The wait can get pretty long, a lot of it is pretty simple (I.e. I could make this pretty easily at home, the decor is kinda freakishly unusual (there are dolls stuck to random spots in the wall, in addition to other random stuff) Thoughts: I've heard a lot about the Fox in the last year or so and have recently been there a few times for breakfast/brunch. The short version is that I'm not terribly impressed, though the food is good. The long version involves the fact that I've really never found a breakfast place that blows me away because I can cook most breakfast items so you've really got to blow my mind for me to be that impressed. The reason I do occasionally go here is because of their incredibly convenient location based on my house. At this point I've tried a few items and the things that stand out are their omelettes and their waffles. Both are really good, but again, nothing I couldn't just whip up at my house. The omelettes have plenty of filling and are reasonably sized. The waffles are lite and fluffy with a good crispness on the outside. Unfortunately they don't have many toppings for their waffles so you're stuck with either the strawberry or blueberry "toppings". Both are super sweet and sugary and don't taste like real fruit. Another issue is that the wait can get pretty long if the place is full, and there isn't really a waiting area. You end up just standing inside the front door next to other people that are eating their food. To top it all off this place has some of the craziest decor I've ever seen. There walls are covered in random "stuff" including way too many weird dolls. While I'm sure that some people will find the decor quaint and creative, I find it a little off-putting and detracts from the overall experience (and it really freaks my wife out). With all of this being said, I think The Fox will still be one of my go-to places on the very rare occasion when I want a "traditional" breakfast. The food isn't bad it just doesn't blow my mind and the atmosphere is a bit crazy for my tastes.near other people eating.
