This is one of my places on my "Monday Breakfast" list. I love eating breakfast at the counter. You get to talk to the employees behind the counter & also get a chance to watch the chef do her think on the grill. Me, also being a cook, love watching good cooks in action. The food always come out quick and cooked perfectly. I have been trying to taste a little bit of everything on their menu. The waffles, pancakes & the home fries have been my favorite so far. I love that they keep the food simple and good, sometimes the way breakfast should be. The decor is another favorite of mine too. They have memorabilia and figurines dating back to my childhood. It may be hidden away in the lovely area of Avondale. But there are big things happening inside. What does the FOX say? YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM! That's right, I said it! I woke up this past Saturday with a hankering for brunch. I'm rather glad that our party didn't arrive until around 12-12:30, as we seemed to catch the tail end of the rush and there wasn't that long of a wait. I was pleasantly surprised to see my favorite face from Chomp Chomp at The Fox. Ian owns both and is quite the rad dude. He was so awesome with my 5 year old niece who quickly became enamored with him. Onto the foodz, as a born and bred Yankee, the first thing that I always look for, and try, on a breakfast menu is corned beef hash. Lo and behold, The Fox had it and it tasted like I walked into my favorite joint back home in Connecticut. Right on the money in taste and affordability! So far, The Fox has won my heart in my quest for corned beef hash in the Bold City. The atmosphere is awesome, with all the vintage toys hanging on the walls and reminders of eras gone by. They even have an Urkel drawstring toy behind the counter! So cool. Another awesome thing for folks who are like me and fans of that awesome Westsider sandwich at Chomp Chomp, it's on the menu here too! You don't have to go all the way Downtown for it! Our waitress was super patient as we had a few latecomers join us. We ordered their food while they were still on the way to Avondale and the food beat them to the table! Other than my nieces who ordered lunch, the rest of us ordered breakfast and our plates were clean by the end. I had the perfect amount of food on my plate between the corned beef hash, home fries, eggs, and toast. The Fox is a very small joint, so my suggestion is going to be to either get here early for brunch or get here late. I'm sure the wait in between has to be pretty long. There are a couple outside tables, then the rest is either sitting at the counter or at a booth inside. The setup reminded me of the diner my Uncle had when I was growing up. Seriously, The Fox is so reminiscent of home for me, be prepared to see me more often! read more

Is there a better breakfast in Jax? I struggle to find one and there are some good ones like the original Metro Diner and the incredible Maple Street Biscuit Company. Still, the funky Fox Restaurant takes the cake. Breakfast here on the weekend can be a wait but trust me--it's worth it. Omelets here rock, biscuits and cheese grits do as well. The pancakes are really as good as it gets. It's kind of ridiculous just how well this place gets the simple things right. It is truly a place where eggs and hash are slung as if the entire staff are NYC short-order vets. Serving sizes are mammoth, service is speedy and the food is always hot. Come on--what more can you ask for at breakfast? Lunch? Forget about it. The sandwiches are huge, well-crafted and served without the kind of fuss that distracts from what you need: a reason to nap and pretend to work in the afternoon. The onion rings are my favorite. If you want no-frills, kick-butt diner food this is really Jacksonville's best option and it never disappoints. read more

They cook a perfect egg, their burgers are very underrated, and the staff is loaded with Jax artists and musicians, so they usually know the cool things happening around town. This cute and cozy diner welcomes you from the start! As you walk in the tiny "hole in the wall" you are greeted and told to sit where you like. Fox's restaurant is like you walked into a time warp of goodness and plenty! The whole place is decorated like nothing before! Random things and art work is wall worthy! Very small place, with "bar"...okay okay it's counter seating and booths. The staff is friendly and hustle to get your order in and out. I came on a Friday and was surprised to get a booth right away, but it quickly started to fill up and people were sitting at the counter and waiting for seats. Food is exactly what you ordered, how you ordered, and tasty! I had the corned beef hash and eggs with wheat toast. The corned beef was fried perfectly with some crispy mixed in there for your liking! My eggs were scrambled perfectly well, just like I wanted them. My son accompanied me for breakfast, and he is a hard one to please. He ordered the Mini Fox Breakfast and raved about it the whole time. Said the home fries were the best he had tasted and the eggs were perfect! He also gobbled up that bacon, but who doesn't love bacon?!? I can see me coming back here more often, especially when my son is in town. He is smitten! :) I can't wait to try some more of this "greasy spoon", maybe even for lunch one day! read more

Loved this cute diner style restaurant in Avondale. From the moment you walk in you feel welcome. Dine with the locals at the counter or have a seat at a booth. The restaurant has a nice cozy vibe to it. Lots of fun photos are displayed on the wall. As soon as I sat down I was greeted and asked if I wanted coffee. I looked over the menu and decided on the two egg breakfast with bacon, biscuit and fruit. It was a pretty hardy breakfast for just $6.95. The eggs were very fresh, the bacon was crispy and I loved the homemade biscuit. I swapped out the home fries for a fruit cup. It had fresh bananas, pineapple and honey dew. The only negative was the coffee. It was weaker than circus lemonade. Lol. It tasted like coffee flavored water. Please offer your customers a stronger version. This was the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. The service was great and the entire staff were so friendly. That always makes for a pleasurable dining experience. read more

This is my FAVORITE breakfast joint! (I may be bias because I can walk there.) Great options for traditional breakfasts, the BLT and french fries are amazing! This is a very casual place where you'll become a regular pretty fast. Don't go too late in the morning on Saturday/Sunday, unless you don't mind waiting. There is always a line after 8:30am. The serve all of the menu items at all times. The decor is also really fun! read more

The Fox has 5 stars hands down. The food is delicious and when it comes to old "greasy spoon" diners, this is one of the best! The atmosphere is great and you could go 29 times without seeing the same things on the wall. (There's so much random stuff) I recommend: French Toast Cheese Grits Corn beef Hash Fried Potatoes I also recommend NOT going early on a Saturday unless you wanna wait in line (outside the building) for 45 minutes while you wait for a table. I usually wait and go in the afternoon an hour and a half before they close. It's pretty quiet then. ALSO! When you're in there take a while to talk to the server and meet some locals. It's a FANTASTIC spot to learn more about the area. When you're finished walk off all the pancakes at Boone Park or walk down to the river which is just a few blocks away. read more

Every time we're in Jacksonville, which is probably every 3-4 months we will ALWAYS make a stop here for breakfast. I've ate at a booth and at the counter. Hands down I prefer the counter. My sister and her family live here in Jacksonville and frequent the Fox often, to the point the owner, cook and waitresses all know them by name. They really take the time to invest in knowing their customers and making small talk l to build a connection. Literally every time I am there, the owner comes over and asks how my visit is going. Today we were a group of 7 and surprisingly the counter was opened for it being 8:30 on a Sunday. So we went in and saved 3 seats for the rest of our party to join (usually they won't allow seats to be saved - as it's first come first serve on seats). My son sat at the end of the counter closest to the grill and the main cook, Marvin and his sou chef (unsure of his name) talked football with my son the entire time. He loved the conversation the entire time. Yes, you're there as a customer but they make your experience worthwhile and as if you're one of them. Today, was the first time I had ordered something that I wasn't a huge fan of, I blame it on my taste buds being different due to me being pregnant. Literally I've had their pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, bacon/eggs, hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy and all have been top notch. Today, I had the French Toast with a side of white toast, hey baby likes bread and carbs. French toast just didn't look appetizing nor tasted very well. This place is supposed to be a landmark but I was not impressed. It's super close for breakfast but I dread going because every time I think I'm going to get sick. It is FILTHY inside. Stained ceiling tiles, sticky tables, etc. the food is mediocre but the main reason I won't go back is the owner. He is quite possibly the most obnoxious human I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with while waiting in line somewhere. He is typically the one who seats customer so you can't avoid dealing with him. His "schtick" is to tease and berate customers when he is not turning the awful diner stereo system to full blast so that you cannot enjoy your conversation at your table while you eat your meal. I'm a local and I'm telling you please do not waste your time, there's so many better restaurants right down the strip. read more

Yes the parking Sucks, BAD! The line can be terrible but unlike the Metro the Fox is better priced, Better Service, Better Portion sizes. Get there before 8am and the wait not so bad or later in the morning.(10ish) The owners work here (some would say live here! LOL) the staffhas been pretty consistent over the years and dependable. So the food here is wonderful. Me and my husband and my kids have been coming here for about 4 months. I always come at least once a week and bring my friends too. I have never complained or had and issues with anything. However, today me and my friend came to eat breakfast and we had the rudest server. She was overly assertive every time I ask a question, and very passive aggressive for no reason. At first I was trying to figure out if that was just her personality-or not. Once we got our food I notice my omelette didn't have a the amount of gravy it usually come with and yes I know it's just gravy but I freaking love that omelet and the gravy is my favorite part. When I asked her about it she was very rude and said that is the amount of gravy it comes with and told me that if I wanted extra it would be 2.95 extra. I thought that was a little ridiculous but so I said okay and talked to the manger. Well she didn't like that very much and when she brought me my check she rolled her eyes and said he is gonna take care of the gravy since you couldn't. My mouth hit the floor because knowing myself and my character I could feel myself about to really snap on her " like put my hands on her mad". However I didn't say anything and went up to the register to pay for my food because If i had another encounter with her I know I would of snapped. I told the manger when he asked me what was wrong that I wanted to smack the f*** out of her because she upset me so bad I was shaking. Today 10-01-21i went to the fox where I have gone for 10!years. It was 930 am somewhat crowded but there were two empty tables. The bald host asked me if I wanted to sit at the bar I declined. I usually eat by myself at the fox and need a back rest for my bad back. But I see no reason to discuss that with the host. As I waited the table in front of me left. Another host /manager came up and again asked if I wanted to sit at the bar, I again declined. HE SAID HE COULDNT SIT ME AS I WAS BY MYSELF AND HE ONLY HAD ONE TABLE OPEN. I said ok and left. In todays times you would think a small business would want as much business as possible and wouldn't want to drive away customers that have eaten there for a decade but it happens. Retro diner vibe in Avondale. (I expected Flo to walk out of the kitchen any moment telling Mel to "kiss my grits".) This is my second time here and I love it. The food is really good, made just right and with good portions. (Thanks to Chris-the cook). He's fast, too. The best part of this place is the staff. Elana was my server and was friendly, professional, and seemed to read my mind on what I needed before I even asked. The music in the place was bluesy rock that made me tap my foot, and made Chris and Elana dance while they worked. They were a hoot. They were so friendly and started my day off right. How do I put into words how special The Fox is? It's more than a diner. It's more than just a breakfast and lunch joint. The interior is an eclectic mash of old toys and funny memorabilia from over the years. My favorite is a wanted poster for Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen hanging in the hallway. The cooks must sprinkle fairy dust over the eggs because they are the BEST 'over medium' eggs I've ever had! The consistency of their eggs is also *always* spot on! I wish I knew the secret! Getting the Belgium waffle is also a MUST and even though we can make our own waffles at home, they never taste as yummy as they do at the Fox! I ordered the Corned Beef Hash Breakfast meal yesterday ($9.50) and chose home fries and a biscuit as my side. The Corned Beef was a nice change up from the usual "American" breakfast I get and I appreciated how it enhanced the flavors of their already incredible eggs. The biscuits may be the BEST in Jacksonville, sorry Maple Street, with their fluffy clouds of carbohydrate pleasure! The Hot Chocolate ($2.25) was served to me in a celebratory fashion a giant topping of whipped creme and hot fudge drizzled down the sides! Good morning indeed! Typically, I order the Waffle Breakfast ($10.50) the amount of food you receive is IMMENSE and easily split between two hungry adults. It's served with two eggs, bacon or sausage, grits home fries or fresh fruit. Personally, I'd skip the grits and order the home fries instead. The fresh fruit side is always a safe option with a melody of freshly cut banana, pineapple, cantaloupe, and honeydew. The service is usually stellar and although I have driven by and SEEN the long line out the door, I have never personally had to ever wait when I was craving The Fox. It's located in the historical area away from all the corporate buildings and chain restaurants. The Fox has a very welcoming atmosphere. Okay, best omelet I've had... Ever. The Tough Guy Omelet has sausage, bacon, ham and cheddar. I added jalapenos. It is amazingly fluffy and huge... And jam packed with goodies. The coffee is great diner coffee. I'm not sure of the brand, though. The cheese grits are good. You might want to add a little salt. The biscuits are fluffy and warm. They may be homemade. Ah! The greasy diner! Really got to like the Fox. Not greasy either. It's a small place right in the middle of Avondale. Big menu with a lot of different choices. The food is really good. Really love the french fries. Good sized portions, especially for breakfast items. Parking can be tough in the area but there is plenty nearby. The place isn't big. Definitely don't bring a crowd as the booths are small and limited seating at the counter. But come hungry and enjoy. read more
