After spending the morning touring Hoover Dam, we worked up an appetite and headed to Boulder City to check out Fox Smokehouse BBQ. Great decision. This place has a legit small-town feel and serves some excellent barbecue. We ordered the Burger special, sliders (one pork and one brisket), and The Brisket sandwich. The sliders were huge for sliders and served on big toasted buns and piled high with coleslaw, onions, pickles, and pepperoncinis. Both meats were flavorful and tender. The brisket sandwich was outstanding: certified Angus beef cooked low and slow, seasoned with their Texas-style rub, sliced thick, and stacked high on grilled Texas toast. Very satisfying. For drinks, we had a couple Hazy Fox IPAs and two Huckleberry Lemonades that were on special for $5, which were a fun and refreshing choice. The sides were just as impressive. My family ordered the 50/50 bowl with half mac & cheese and half cowboy beans which was outstanding. The cowboy beans were especially packed with flavor. We also tried the fried okra and potato salad. The okra was amazing; crispy and delicious. The potato salad was just okay for me and a little bland, but I'm from the north, so I know everyone makes potato salad differently depending on the region. Overall, Fox Smokehouse BBQ was a great stop with delicious food, generous portions, and a welcoming hometown vibe. Definitely worth visiting if you're near Boulder City. read more

Fox Smokehouse BBQ is located in Boulder City (about 45 minutes from North Las Vegas). I thought this place was a safe bet because they currently have an impressive 4.5 star average on Yelp. I also note that most BBQ restaurants that I've been to are also inconsistent. A BBQ restaurant is the very hardest of all restaurants to run because it tastes many hours to prepare the meats and then after the meats are smoked then they have to figure out on how to store the meats and keep them hot for hours to serve. Anyways we've hit Fox Smokehouse on a bad day. When you walk in on one side is a bar area and on the other side is a dining area with a salad bar (but no bbq meats and mostly just ham and lunch meat turkey). The hostess also does the take out service and might be running food out into parking lot before she seats you. It looks like a regular BBQ Place inside. It's not fancy. It's decorated with lots of PIGS. I was expecting some Fox decorations but I could only find PIG things. They even have PIG decorations in the ladies rest room. They also have some BBQ awards on display. They don't have the two meat combo options like most places so you have to either get a sandwich, or a platter with a half pound of meat on it. Sides are additional. I tried the bbq turkey breast with a small macaroni and cheese and a small corn. (for most people this is large enough for two and then some). I must give them credit for amazing flavors on the turkey but it was a little dry today. The corn also had very good flavor to it. But they can win a prize for maybe The WORST macaroni and cheese on the planet. EEEEEEEEEK if was awful. This macaroni and cheese could only have been created by a toddler. It was like mushy pasta mixed with something like Velveeta with BIG LUMPS of real cheese that didn't melt in and BIG LUMPS OF BURNT CHEESE. BLECH! My husband unfortunately tried a Pulled Pork Platter. The poor pig died in vain. They served pulled pork that was SO DRY THAT YOU COULD USE IT AS DENTAL FLOSS. Fox Smokehouse is on a corner street. There is about 10-15 parking spots around the building, and the rest is street parking. There might have been additional parking, but I didn't see it immediately. They have a pub area and a dining area--separated by a thoroughfare. We arrived at around 12:55pm on a Saturday and were seated within 5-7 minutes. The dining room was pretty full except for 3-4 open tables. The vibe is somewhere between an upscale dive bar meets tavern lodge. I liked it a lot. We ordered drinks and my usual is an iced tea, however, it tasted like water. Super disappointed for a bbq place, but moving on to what matters most....the food. They have everything you could think of to meat plates with sides, all types of burgers and sandwiches, salads, deserts, wings, and a kids menu. The meat plates and sides are à la carte. There didn't appear to be a go-to variety plate with everything included, so just be aware of the individual prices if that's a concern. Each of the à la carte plates come with your chosen meat/protein (1/2 lb) and you can choose à la carte your sides and à la carte bread options (corn bread, Texas toast, biscuits). I ordered the brisket with okra and the cowboy mash up which is half macaroni & cheese and half beans, and a side of cornbread. The sides were a bit small (4oz, approximately), but it was really good. The okra was crisp and not greasy. The server recommended ranch and a fry sauce to go on top and it was delicious. The cowboy mashup was okay; the macaroni & cheese was flavorful, but the beans were just "ehhh". I'm not sure what I was expecting. The brisket......Ahhhhhhhhh--mazing. It was moist and flavorful and you don't even need but to pull it gently from your fork and it just comes off. Sooo good. I highly recommend the brisket, hands down. Understand that the pitmaster can't be at the grill all the time, but lukewarm collard greens too were disappointing because they were not hot - and it's usually one of my favourite vegetables in the South. Finally got a chance to eat in instead of take out. I can honestly tell you eating in is much preferred over takeout any day. When you can get fresh brisket over takeout which is not ate immediately when served is not the way to go. This is the best brisket I've had so far in southern nevada. The rib is good but I thought it's a bit on the sweet side which I think it's overkill. For meats, of you chill out well, you didn't need to drown your meat in sweet sauce. The brisket is kind of average. For the collard greens as a side, it's not bad but it needs more fat to cook it. The restaurant is rustic full with country charm, a fun place to be. Probably the best BBQ I've had in the Las Vegas area. Funny things is, this place is actually in Boulder City! I've been here multiple times for lunch and dinner. And while it's a little busier during dinner time it's never too busy which is surprising since the food is so good. The staff is always nice and helpful. Haven't had a bad server once. There's ample seating as well as a bar area with more seating and high top tables. The beer is cold and they have a full bar. But the main thing you have to try is the barbecue. Today 10-27.25 @ 4pm what a let down dried out spare ribs and the baby backs were the same this was definitely not fresh BBQ these were day old. Maybe it's growing pains? Maybe we got leftovers from the day before? I was ready for awesome BBQ but was disappointed. We were there on a Sunday, just before the lunch rush began. Since I never know if I'll be back to a place, I like to sample multiple items. The closest thing here is a pick-your-own plate of meat, sides (if you want), and bread (if you want). However, the minimum on the meat is 1/2 lb. or a half-rack. This is not conducive to sampling. In each category there were plenty of choices; maybe too many, in terms of meat? I settled on a half-rack of St. Louis Style ribs (baby backs were also available), a half-pound of brisket, and corn. The food came out quickly, which worried me. It suggests it's been sitting around for awhile. The brisket was lean, but it was dry, as in overcooked. The true test of BBQ is how it tastes without sauce. There was no crust, so I couldn't detect the dry rub. I had to resort to their BBQ sauce, which comes I'm mild or hot. The ribs were a bit better. The slightly spicy rub was nice, and the meat easily came off the bone, but they were not anything to brag about. They were also a little on the dry side. I had people in my party who could take the leftovers, which allowed me to order two meats. One of them, who was a long-time fan, was also disappointed. He'd only ever been to the smaller space, which is why I wonder if it's growing pains. I've heard tales of how good this place is and how I've got to try it. My dad has also heard these tales for years but we just never made it out. Last night though, we finally did, you know, a little treat for ourselves, and honestly we were shocked. Upon entering, we were greeted with friendly faces and a bustling restaurant. We were also greeted by a bunch of very large trophies and Las Vegas' Best awards. Now, I didn't take a close look at them because of how good I heard this place was, so I assumed they were first place trophies and best in the valley awards. After eating here though, I'm just going to assume they are participation trophies. Now, the menu actually looks bomb and got me really excited. There are specials, amazing looking sandwiches, family platters, and of course the a la carte section where everyone should really start when at a good BBQ place. Upon gazing over that section though, the prices seemed quite high, so we opted to only get two a la carte options, 1/2 lb each of burnt ends and sausage, and then two sandwiches, the Oklahoman sandwich with a side of macaroni and cheese, and the Brisket sandwich with a side of fries. My dad also got the Up in Smoke Cocktail. The cocktail came out super quick and was incredibly tasty, sweet, smoky and had a bit of spice to it. Let me tell you, that cocktail had more flavor than anything else we put in our mouths that entire night. The burnt ends came out and were actually burnt and quite dry, the sausage was a bit lukewarm, and everything, including both sandwiches lacked flavor. There were two sauces that you could use, a "hot" BBQ sauce and a sweet BBQ sauce. I am not even joking, these both tasted like watered down marinara. Even then, we needed to douse the meats with these sauces to get any semblance of flavor, even if that flavor was spaghetti. The only above average parts of the meal, besides the cocktail, were the sides. The macaroni was creamy and cheese and the fries were crispy and had a nice flavor to them. I don't necessarily consider myself a BBQ expert but after eating the best BBQ I've ever had in Texas and far better BBQ at many other places in town (shout out to Bell's BBQ and John Mulls Meats), I honestly can't even consider this BBQ. As a saving grace, there was nothing that we had that was actually bad. Everything was edible and filling and did the trick for dinner but that's nothing to be proud of or have awards for. read more
