I called the inn concierge to ask a few questions, but they didn't respond, and never retuned my call, although I left a clear message. I tried calling again on another day, but again went to voicemail. It was easy to locate and parking was fine. The landscaping around the inn was lovely. My room was at the top of a narrow, steep staircase. No offer of help to get my bag up there until I got to the top, and then one of the housekeepers kindly helped me with my bag. The room was what I expected, given the inn is old. The bathroom was okay and the hot water was fine. It was clean, but there were ants around the coffee maker, as well as larger bugs- I woke up to find a medium sized black bug under my back and in the bathroom , another larger one on my shoulder. I didn't find anyone at the desk at 5pm or at 7am the next morning to answer questions or check out. I had been given a number to call if you needed them but I didn't want to bother them, as it wasn't an emergency. There were no snacks or drinks available in the afternoon or overnight, and they recommended I either go to a gas station nearby, or go to the beautiful winery down the road, which I did, but they were full and did not offer a take-out lunch. There was a nice new Nespresso machine in my room, and I enjoyed the coffee immensely. I did not stay for breakfast, as I found my stay an unpleasant experience overall. It was not a place I would want to visit again.

It was super clean, with a nice, cozy bed and comfortable, bougie amenities, including the shower you'd see at the St. Regis (open shower with a rain showerhead and sprayer). The private hot tub on the deck overlooking the mountains is gorgeous. I watched the sunset from my deck. I also discovered there's a washer/dryer in there in addition to a microwave and a fridge. So it's like a bougie version of a Residence Inn. Also, since I'm in my own cabin, I didn't hear anything from the outside unless I was outside. The property is beautiful. It has some small on-site hiking trails that take about 20-30 minutes. The clubhouse has an AMAZING chef-cooked breakfast in the morning that's included in your stay rate, and the on-site manager is so nice. They also put sparkling water and Fiji water in your fridge for free. You're also near the cute town of Staunton, which has gift shops, glass art (and glassblowing if you want to try), a historic railway, a high point city view (Sears Bridge), book shops, and restaurants/cafes. It's good to spend a few hours. There's no dinner on-site at the inn, but I went to the nearby Blue Mountain Brewery, which gets very popular. An absolutely beautifully renovated historic structure was constructed into a well appointed accommodation. This is a one bedroom standalone cottage with a sizable wood deck off the bedroom. It has a full kitchen, perfect for extended stays. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Ginger, our point of contact with 1804 Cottages, set us up with a well stocked refrigerator and a precooked omelette and bacon breakfast for the following morning including croissants, yogurt, juices, milk etc. She literally thought of everything. After a long day of travel, this was a huge benefit. The 1804 inn and cottages is a 'must do' for couples, families or a group of friends that appreciate wine and beautiful settings to share together. My wife and I agreed...this is a magical place. My new husband and I rented out all the cottages for our wedding this past weekend. The cottages…read morethemselves were absolutely beautiful. With that being said, the Inn Keeper, Jo, left a lot to be desired. She was very difficult to work with and added a lot of unnecessary stress to our wedding. For example, we were never told (looked back through every email) that the Pinot Grigio cottage (which is the only two bedroom cottage) had a different price if you planned to use both bedrooms. So on the day of our wedding, the second bedroom was dead bolted and was not accessible. I called the lady at the 1804 Inn who kindly told me she would come unlock it. Then another woman immediately called back and rudely told me we hadn't paid for the second bedroom. I told her that was never told to us by Jo. And her response was that she didn't know what Jo had told us, but if we paid another $100 she could unlock it. I obviously had bigger things going on that day, so we said fine. And they unlocked the bedroom but did not put out a second bottle of wine (a bottle of wine and breakfast is included with each cottage set for 2). She also charged our credit card for twice the amount her email (sent a few days before the wedding) had stated it would be charged. There was no invoice sent when we were charged. No breakdown in the charges. I had to email her myself for further information. And 3 days later (very typical of communication with Jo... usually took longer) she finally responded with pictures of the blurry screen of an iPhone showing us various things (like a fire extinguisher used, which she states was our cottage but looking at the virtual tour it is not, but she said "I'm not going to argue, it was your cottage"). Out of all the stress wedding planning brings, Jo was at the top of our list. I'm very glad I never have to communicate with her further. When I told Jo she caused the most unnecessary stress for me while planning my wedding, she told me that our group of friends were the worst guests. When I inquired as to why? She said because the furniture was slightly moved around in one of the rooms. And there were cigarette butts on the ground of one porch. For being an older woman, her maturity has not come with her age. I loved barboursville as a venue and do not regret getting married there. And the cottages were beautiful. It just seems like Jo is very separate from the actual venue and is less than accommodating. If they change Inn Keepers I would absolutely recommend staying in the cottages. But for now, we won't return until that changes. For reference I'm adding the blurry picture she sent us of the fireplace. And then the picture of the actual fireplace where we stayed. But again, she said she wouldn't argue with me (she clearly does not know her own cottages very well)

Lost power and was not refunded the night we didn't stay…read more My thoughtful husband booked a two-night stay for my birthday from the night of 8/15 to check out on 8/17 Checking in was easy. Front desk was nice. The room that we got wasn't too spacious (our 3 kids prefer the spaciousness of Hilton Homewood suites and the like) but it made up for it with the little patio space and easy access to go outside so that we could take our dog out. Not too bad for just a couple of nights. On the 16th we had breakfast at The Mill Room. Upon arrival (around 8:50am) the hostess was confused when we said we prepaid for breakfast. She continued to look confused about us pre-paying online. My husband shrugged and decided let's just deal with it later and sit down to eat. I don't know if it's something that they just started and she was not familiar with, but I thought it was odd. Once we sat down to eat, she came back and she said "oh you got a breakfast package?!" And then proceeded to explain how we charge it to the room and how it gets deducted from the amount we prepaid. The breakfast was good with a selection of the typical items like: eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon as well as pastries and chia pudding. The freshly made waffles were my favorite. That day we had planned to visit some vineyards and an Orchard, do the typical family Charlottesville experience and then get back to use the sports facility and the pool. It was storming on the way back, so we knew that we weren't going to be able to use the pool. When we were entering the building a gentleman who was also staying there said they had lost power and the whole property seemed to be without power. There were no lights on. There didn't seem to be a generator powering emergency lights or anything like that. Thankfully, our room door did open with our card. This was a bit before 8pm. When my husband called guest services, they said to give it about an hour. I'm not sure if this is what the power company gave them or if this was just an estimated time they came up with. An hour later, we still didn't have power. My husband is a business owner and as much as we want to be unplugged when we have family time. It's not realistic. He needs to be available for any emergencies having to deal with his business or his elderly parents. We decided that we couldn't stay the night in a hot hotel room since the AC didn't have power (it was so hot and humid) and risk not being able to charge our devices. Guest services told him that he wouldn't be charged for the night so we booked with a different hotel, packed up our belongings in the dark with the little light we could get from our phone flashlights. Hopefully we didn't miss anything, but we packed everything in the dark and left around 9pm. On the 17th we checked out of the NEW hotel that we booked and drove back 3 hours to our home. My husband saw that we were indeed charged for the night of the 16th so he called the next day, which was Tuesday the 18th around 5:45pm. He left a message with our room number and information requesting that it be refunded. He did not receive a call back. He also tried to emailing but that just bounced back like their email isn't working. It is now 8/21 and we still have not received back any information regarding the stay being refunded as well as the "breakfast package" for five people, for that following morning.

Wander the vineyard a bit, try to spot the hog, count the chickens, settle in on the secluded back porch with a beverage and watch the clouds roll past the mountains. We had reservations to stay at a different B&B in Scottsville but due to an unfortunate situation we found ourselves looking for alternate arrangements. While I was on the cell phone checking for a place my wife ran across The Chester and called them. She was smiling from the moment that she spoke with them on the phone which, considering our frame of mind, was a great start. We got to this place which was absolutely gorgeous. The Inn was spacious, clean, very tastefully decorated and painted, and smelled like roses and family. We were warmly greeted by Jean who showed us the rooms and was accommodating from the get go. She helped us plan dinner and set up a late wine tasting trip, as well as offered to make dinner for us the evening after. The dinner was fantastic with Jean and Craig pampering us with delicious food, wine and dessert. If you have the opportunity to have dinner with them ask her for the orange squash soup and the rosemary pork...WOW! The breakfasts too were amazing!! We offered Jean to buy our own bacon/sausage since my wife does not eat nitrates (migraines). She told us not to worry about it and she will figure it out. The first day she served a fantastic veggie quiche (sorry if I am not using the right term) with fresh juice and french pressed coffee. The second day french toast with NITRATE FREE apple sausages! Our rooms were promptly made every day and Craig made sure to provide turned down service which was a very nice detail. Oh yeah, we got to meet the grand baby and also the Inn mascot, Trixie, who is a sweet little dog with the best personality. One of the best B&B experiences we've had period! We will be back!!

When we arrived we were greeted with a warm "Welcome, and consider yourselves part of the family"....and that is how it was. We chatted with the hosts at Breakfast (which was delicious) and when we returned from dinner in the evening. The second evening we even talked them into a scotch and great conversation in front of a roaring fire. Location is quaint and peaceful and very close to all of the sites you would want to visit (Monticello, Madison's house, wineries, Charlottesville, antique shops, etc.). A great stay.
