I wound up working right in front of Frankel's and have been eyeing this spot up for some time. I grabbed a pastrami sandwich but unfortunately couldn't eat it for a few hours. I figured it would be soggy by the time I got to it. NOPE, it was PERFECT. The pastrami was cooked perfectly, the bread was delicious and it had the perfect amount of dressing on it. Honestly I was very pleased with frankels and I'm hoping I have more work around there again. I'd like to try out their breakfast, those sandwiches look incredible. I was told to check this place out by a random girl on the plane ride over to NYC. I told her I was staying in Brooklyn. She said this was her go to for something quick. Um, THE BACON EGG AND CHEESE HERE CHANGED MY LIFE and I don't even like bacon!! This was literally the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had!! I think it was especially good because they make their egg super thin and then fold it over multiple times. That way it has a much more delicate, well balanced flavor compared to just like a slab of EGG. It was also super super cheesy and when I split open the sandwich the cheese was just ooey gooey everywhere. The bread was also the perfect texture, soft but also substantial enough to not become mush. Everything about this sandwich was amazing!! I also tried the cinnamon babka here and it was my first time trying babka ever! It was super good and smelled soooooooo cinnamony. I brought some back to my family and that loaf was devoured in two days. It didn't taste dry at all but I bet it would have been even better with some butter (family ate it all before I could try it with butter). I definitely recommend Frankel's. When you live in NY you always get the sudden urge for a bagel with cream cheese and smoked fish with a hot cup of coffee. Sundays in the fall are special to me because they're my me day. And on this recent Sunday I felt that urge. Once again my Chicago friend (thehopdemon) has his finger on the NY pulse and suggested Frankels. I'm always in Greenpoint and have seen the deli a ton but never made it in. When I parked my bike, I could see the long line of hungry people waiting. I still wanted that smoked fish. I waited in line. When I saw a table open up, I slapped my backpack down to save a spot. Before I knew it, I was in the front of the line. I decided on the "Nettie", smoked fish, cream cheese and beets on a poppy seed bagel. I couldn't resist the rugelachs. I ordered two and a hot coffee. This was the perfect place to people watch. There was babies coming and going, drama from people's instagrams and so on and so forth. It was a challenge getting water since it was in front of the bathrooms and where people pick up orders. Ordered online and pick up for long road trip, so many items were eaten much later from when it was picked up and it was still amazing! It was so good I forgot to take pictures of other items after the first bite. Pastrami egg and cheese: Favorite item! Pastrami was definitely homemade, perfectly seasoned and tender like meat butter. Last year I got the same item and pastrami was sliced; I appreciate switching to chunks as you get more pastrami in every bite. The egg was definitely cooked by a chef. Eggs were fluffy like the Japanese rolled egg omelot. Bread has nice soft texture to allow for perfect bite overall. Frankel's #1 bagel on pumpernickel everything bagel: love the pumpernickel everything bagel by itself with scallion cream cheese, but was too much for this bagel. Next time I would go with regular everything. The cucumber salad added a refreshing crunch and delicate sweetness that complimented the salmon very well. Heirloom tomato bagel on regular everything bagel: Ate this 5 hours after pick up and it was shockingly still good and not soggy (I can't imagine how good this would be fresh). Tomatoes were naturally sweet with good crunch, like you get from a fresh from garden tomato. The fact that the tomato held up for 5 hrs really attest to how fresh it was originally. The herbs and vinegrette added a nice acidity to balance the fat from cream cheese. Perfect summer bagel. Dozen assorted bagels: We had two bagels extra in our order, that we didn't order, so thanks for the freebies! :) We ate two in car immediately and rest sat in cooler overnight then in fridge for another day. We toasted them up for sandwiches and it still tasted perfect. Nice crunchy exterior with seasoning on every surface, top and bottom. This place is super special. After living in Greenpoint for 10 years and wishing there was a real Jewish deli option this side of the bridge, we were blessed with Frankel's. What's not to like? Literally everything on the menu is top notch. From the tuna salad to the pastrami, the schmears to the mazto ball soup, you are bound to find something that suits your taste. My personal favs are the classic BEC and PEC (pastrami egg & cheeeeeeee!) both served on that challah roll - so excellently fluffy and buttery. The eggs are supremely prepared in the thinnest, just set sheet that is folded in some perfect holy number and delicately laid on a bed of the most molten liquid American cheese you've ever had. Top it was your choice of pastrami or the crispiest bacon ever and you are in business. The widely praised and highly publicized Deli does not disappoint. I speak from experience having been incredibly impressed by the Hot Pastrami Rachel. While technically not on Frankel's menu, you can procure this bad boy by requesting the Hot Pastrami Reuben with their delicious coleslaw instead of sauerkraut. In my opinion, it takes an already phenomenal sandwich to an even higher level. As for the rest of the ingredients, they're terrific. The pastrami is tender and exhibits a complex flavor profile thanks to a seemingly generous helping of spices. The bread is plush and maintains its structural integrity against the other components of the sandwich. Even the dressing and cheese are first rate. Moreover, the ratio of ingredients is exemplary. Unlike other places that insist on serving monstrous portions of meat which overpower all other ingredients, Frankle's sandwiches are perfectly balanced. Overall, this is one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in a long time and it can more than hold its own against the traditional New York heavyweights (e.g. Katz, 2nd Ave, Pastrami Queen, etc). Bottom line: a terrific pastrami sandwich that is one of the best I've eaten in a long time and can more than hold its own against traditional NYC institutions. Highly recommend read more
