My parents and I stumbled upon this shop while being in this area. Service: There was no line. The staff was very kind and patient. We waited about 10 mins for the food. Food: I ordered the BBQ Chicken. My parents got the Teriyaki Chicken Bowl and the BBQ Mix. The food was hot in temperature and it tasted pretty good. The meat was tender. My family and I have been coming here for about two years now and it's sometimes a hit or miss. At times, they will skimp on the meat and pile a whole lot of cabbage and broccoli underneath the chicken or beef so that the plate looks more full and other times, they will give you your money's worth. So, with that being said, I will write this review based on today's experience. Order: ordered in the restaurant, the lady in front is always welcoming and nice. My order took about 15 minutes to be ready. Food: Food was well made and ingredients was fresh. I ordered a combo box with chicken teriyaki and bbq beef, order of macaroni and spam Musubi. The chicken/beef combo was very flavorful. The macaroni salad is one of my favorite things on the menu and is actually one of the reasons why I keep coming back. I always have to get a side order of the macaroni salad. The musubi is okay, they pack it with rice but the spam slices are very thin.... Not really my thing but my family likes it. Overall: I really want to give them a 4 star rating but because of my mixed experiences here and it being a hit or miss with portion sizes, I have to give them a 3 stars. On this week's episode of "I don't want to eat my own cooking for the next week", I arrived at Frannie Express for lunch (take-out, of course) Today, I ordered the BBQ mix plate ($11.89). The plate came with two scoops of rice, one scoop of macaroni salad, BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, and beef short rib. Nothing seemed egregious here. Notably, the macaroni salad did not taste like a deluge of mayonnaise, the bane of many a macaroni salad. First impressions would lead one to believe that Frannie's embodies prototypical neighborhood Hawaiian restaurant. Decor looks minimalist with about a decade's worth of light exposure and fading, much like any neighborhood Chinese restaurant. That impression would be absolutely correct. Frannie Express sits on San Pablo Avenue. Its easy to drive past. And you probably should keep driving past. I have been here one time, and will not be back. The service was terrible. They were rude and unhelpful. The menu is confusing. I ordered four different menu items before getting one that they would let me purchase. There is a confusing system of combos and availability that I was unable to understand apparently. The food was ridiculously salty and greasy. Solid food! Was here before heading to the Honda dealership. Service was nice and speedy. My husband and I randomly came upon this mom and pop shop. From the outside, the restaurant looks old but the food was spectacular. We ordered the chicken katsu and loco moco. Both were amazing. The katsu sauce was super flavorful and the breaded chicken was juicy and very crunchy. Even the steamed broccoli and cabbage were perfectly cooked. The loco moco really amazed us. The beef patty was very flavorful and big. It wasn't cheap like L&L. The patty was thick and juicy. The eggs were cooked perfectly over easy. The Mac salad was delicious. It really did taste like the authentic Hawaiian Mac salad you get in Hawaii. I've only been here once so I can't comment on their consistency, but my experience was great. It's not the best but I love it. Normally I reserve five star ratings for truly exceptional places. Places where you can get either very different food that tastes delicious or the best food of its kind. But there's something to be said about everyday comfort food that just hits home. Nothing here is the best I ever had but everything we order comes out the way we like. FOOD: Mostly serving Chinese food they do have some classic Hawaiian dishes like loco moco and spam musubi which is what caught my attention in the first place (good Mac salad). But it turns out they have tasty fast food Chinese. All of it is flavorful, plentiful, and reheats great. Which is good because we always have keftovers. Our favorites are Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, and Spring Rolls. SERVICE: They always do a great job for us. Since it's made to order it takes about 15 min so be aware. But the wait is worth it and they are so nice. COST: Very reasonable. And they give you a mound of food. The ratio of cost to quality and quantity definitely comes out in your favor. read more

I was excited to try Hawaiian BBQ, as we don't have any where I am from. I was excited by the pictures of the food, but once I stepped foot Inside that should have been my que to find something better. It was a little messy, and disorganized but the cashier was very nice. However, that didn't make up for the actual food once I received it. The macaroni salad looked very unappealing but I decided to give it a try, the texture was way too off for my liking and the bits of cheese was not it. The chicken was cheaper of the meats as it was way too fatty, and the texture was just too squishy. The breading for the chicken katsu was mostly bread, the actual pieces of chicken were hard to bite into, and it was difficult to tear. The only decent part was the white rice, as it's not hard to mess up white rice, but somehow they did, it was mushy. I won't be coming again, but I did give it a try. read more

They insisted that they wore hair caps but I ordered food for delivery and as I was eating my food I looked down to take another bite and there was a piece of long black hair underneath a piece of chicken that I was about to eat. They told me they couldn't do anything about it mind you my hair is purple so it definitely could not be mine and I just took it out of the bag. Entrees chosen here were broccoli beef, chicken with mixed vegetable, and mapo tofu (as shown from top to bottom). Everything tasted the same (like soy sauce) and did not really have much flavor. Prices are okay for amount of food you get but would not come back here again for Chinese. I do not recommend the Garlic Prawn Hawaiian BBQ entree here because it was just boiled shrimp topped with chopped garlic and a clear sauce.. However I've had other Hawaiian BBQ entrees from here before within the past year (BBQ short ribs, fried fish, chicken katsu) and they were all really good! read more

The chicken was good but not cut up and diced. The tasted was good. The short ribs took most of the plate which was my main complaint because it was the lease favorite. Bland and kind of odd tasting. The bbq chicken was much better. Rice was fresh and sticky. Mac salad was just ok. Surprised to say but the orange chicken was a large portion and tasted good and felt fresh. A nice crisp. Placed an order here on Mother's Day! I have been here before and they are always happy to adjust my order if I don't want rice and want more veggies. If I don't want sauce they not have a problem taking it out. Which is very nice and besides the good good is why I keep coming back. When I picked up my togo order on Mother's Day they were very nice such great customer service. The food was far beyond our expectations!! I ordered spam musubi (which comes 2 pieces per order) a chicken combo plate which came with katsu chicken and teriyaki chicken 2 scoops of rice and Mac salad. Think about Panda Express that cooks deep fried food made to order that somehow still tastes old. That's Frannie Express. Everything tastes like corn syrup with food coloring added. The orange chicken is sickeningly sweet. I'm not quite sure how this kind of food stays open. It's basically cheap American-Chinese buffet food that they put in a fast food setting. Sweet and sour sauce from a giant can and all. My first two reviews were reported and removed from this restaurant. One for being incomplete and one for having too much information about the employer/customer even though there was no specific information. My reviews never ger removed from other restaurants... Dangit, why does this have to be so consistently good for the chicken katsu?!?! Katsu is my go-to for Japanese food. This place has it in the Hawaiian plate lunch style, so accompanied with a huge scoop of short grain white rice and creamy macaroni salad. This place also throws in steamed veggies, cabbage, broccoli and carrots. The katsu, fried fish and short ribs are cooked to order. The steam table is meehhh, depends on how long it's been hanging out in the steam table. That's why we stick to the katsu, fried fish and short ribs. Also, their rice is consistently good. Meaning it's not undercooked and more importantly is not clumpy and mushy, even though it's cooked in one of those huge, like 20 or 30 cup cookers. read more

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. It's not only affordable but great portions, and wonderful staff! They opened about 4 months ago (same location as L&L BBQ) and draws in a pretty consistent crowd for lunch around the businesses. Not too much seating inside (say about 7 tables?), mainly takeout. Needless to say, not much parking either in the lot. They have a pretty good mix between the Hawaiian and Chinese menu-so so affordable like wow! I ordered the chicken and fish katsu combo with a scoop of rice and macaroni salad ( and a little salad too at the bottom, gotta get my vegetables). It came out to be $8-9, definitely not bad. The server was really sweet and checked up on me to make sure I was okay since my food took a bit longer. The katsu for both was absolutely amazing! Very tasty in each bite since they seasoned it a bit before they dipped into the batter. The sauce for the chicken was this smokey hickory sweet and sour bbq sauce almost (threw me off initially) and the tartar works with the fish. I'll come by to try the chinese next time! read more
