A true neighborhood staple on San Pablo Avenue, sitting in its own standalone building with its own parking lot, which makes it easy. It is family owned and run, and you can feel that in the way the place operates. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, and nothing feels overdone. This is classic Cantonese comfort food. Nothing flashy, just familiar dishes, consistently well made, and come in decently generous portions. It's the kind of place people return to for years, even decades, because it delivers the same good experience every time. Little Hong Kong is an old school Chinese restaurant in El Cerrito. It features an extensive menu, off street parking lot, fish tanks, and a spacious dining room with lots of tables. I was there at 12-noon on a Friday. I got a tip from a Yelp Elite friend that I might find Yee Foo Won Ton Soup at Little Hong Kong. Well, it's on the menu, but it's spelled differently. They call it "Ho Toa Tee Won Ton Soup." Most places call it Hung Tao Yee Foo Won Ton Soup. Okay, I'm no expert on the spelling. It's deep fried won ton, in egg drop soup. My soup had minced ham and some green onions. BTW, I got free egg flower soup while I was waiting. The place gets busy at lunchtime. My soup arrived to the table steaming hot. It's a medium sized bowl, and had about 8 plump dumplings loaded with shrimp and pork. The egg drop soup was silky and savory. The minced ham made the soup a bit salty. Pretty filling for a lunch. Price $13.95. Service was fair. There were two servers, and one gentleman at the counter handling takeout orders. I'm not sure how old this place is, but the decor looks like 1980's or earlier. The "all gender" restroom is a little small. If I'm in the area, I'll be back to try the $12.95 lunch special. read more

We've been coming to Little Hong Kong for as long as we can remember and our family even longer. This is our go to Chinese spot in the Berkeley area and for good reason, it is fantastic food for a very good price. We frequently order for takeout but there is a dine in option in a spacious inside room. Parking is pretty quick and accessible to find for pickup as well and the food was ready much quicker than we expected. We ordered a bunch of food from stuffed tofu to salt and pepper spare ribs, pork fried rice, chicken and green beans, beef chow fun, and so on... The food is flat out great. Not a single dish was average, all were far above it. The standouts to us were the beef chow fun, just popping with flavor and texture with a very nice sauce layering the noodles bringing it together; and the Singaporean noodle, unreal with bold flavors and the nice chew of the very fine noodles. Again, the food is so good but the price really brings the value to a point where it feels like a must go to recommendation. Dining in is also a great experience with friendly and knowledgeable waiters. Absolutely a great spot for family dinners and with Chinese New Year around the corner it's a great option for anyone looking for a spot to spend it! read more

Not many places remaining at has $12.99 lunch specials! This little restaurant has been around forever. I used to come for lunch specials with coworkers and then totally forgot about this place after the covid-19 pandemic. I decided to give their restaurant another try and food still taste as good as I remember. I really liked the shrimp and chicken string beans dish, everything was super tender and well seasoned. The beef chow fun has a little too much undercooked onions for my taste, but flavor was good. The fish filet with black bean sauce has too much onions too, I will order other dishes in the future. Flavor of all the dishes are good and authentic. I like that they have their own private parking lot, so I don't have to look for street parking. Not busy at all on a weekday lunch. I come here with my grandparents, who tell me this is one of the few places left that serve traditional Cantonese style food. It's a family owned business and the owner, Richard, is very kind. It's a casual spot with a small parking lot out front. The tomato beef pan fried noodles are my go-to dish, which I love. Sometimes it can be on the saucy side, although personally this doesn't bother me. At my last visit, the bokchoy & beef, bitter melon & pork, and fried rice were all fantastic in both flavor and portions. I appreciate they will modify dishes on request, as my grandparents are always asking for things to be "less oily", and I believe we ordered the bokchoy & beef off-menu. While I typically order food here family style in a group, the table next to us ordered the lunch specials, which were very generous and only around $13. read more

My visit took place a few Saturday evenings ago and I enjoyed my experience. I was surprised at how busy it was on a cold/gloomy Saturday night around 7pm. Even so, this place is pretty big (doesn't look like it at first glance), and got seated quickly in a semi-private area in one of the side rooms. The menu was slightly overwhelming and I wasn't famished. Ended up with only 2 dishes: Salt & pepper pumpkin and pan fried crispy noodles. Fried batter covered the pumpkins, but thankfully not greasy at all. I didn't feel "gross" or "blah" after eating. The noodles were as expected and had the nice "crunch". No drenched sauce on the dish, only the right amount. I don't come to traditional Chinese restaurants for service, so didn't set a high bar. The service met expectations. Fair prices, clean restrooms, small parking lot with ample street parking near by. Overall, I'll come again and try other dishes. #2/2025 read more

There is cantonese food which is getting harder to find, and is a favorite chinese style of mine-and apparently others! The food is always cooked fresh. I love the bitter melon dish. It came with duck soup with bones and vegetables, jellyfish with duck meat, Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce and Peking duck with buns, plum sauce and scallions. I ate here just recently and I was impress how they made me feel better when I was dinning in. The restaurant was out of tables that can occupy 4 people and since I was dinning by myself I was seated at the round table with the to go food. I was amazed how they were able to accommodate me. By the way I had lunch after 2pm when the restaurant didn't have a table for me to be seated at. I had Broccoli Beef for lunch and I am still impress with the proportion of my plate. Plenty of rice but the Broccoli Beef was good. Parking lot is small but if you are able to get street parking you will be lucky. My mama loves this place! She orders something off menu that I won't say... I went with her and her homies and my sister. The owner, a dude he is SO nice! and maybe recognized my mama and friends. We Immediately get tea. The server is cool, in a mean impatient way, catch my drift? I'm with 80 year old ladies and she's telling us the cook is about to go on his lunch break so order now!! So I put the pressure on the 80 year old ladies on her behalf, because I get it. Lunch shift is lame. Our lunch special plates were jamming. They were out of bitter melon. My family has been coming here for literal decades, even when they were located in their previous location further down on San Pablo Ave. My grandparents loved going there when they were still alive and got to know the owner and staff well. Nearly all of the adults' birthdays were spent there. Family doesn't eat out nearly as often these days, but still visits from time to time. We decided to get a large take-out order from here for Christmas dinner this year. I called early in the afternoon for a 5pm pick-up to give them time especially because we were ordering a whole Peking duck. We arrived at 5pm to pick-up the order, but it wasn't ready yet, but they were unsurprisingly VERY busy with a ton of take-out orders and a good handful of parties dining in as well. The staff was doing their best to juggle both take-out orders and those dining in, but the system is old-fashioned with pen and paper. They would probably operate faster and with a little less chaos with some kind of computerized system, but they seem determined to stay with the traditional system. We were patient and waited to be asked which order we were waiting for and for our food to be ready. (Other people waiting were patient as well, but I can imagine there could be people who would get impatient and unforgiving.) Finally the order was ready and we took everything home. Everything we ordered was correct and looked great for take-out. The Peking duck looked amazing (even though I couldn't eat it), and the rest of my family said it was delicious and perfectly cooked. My dad was savoring it and feeling nostalgic as he ate. I got an order of salt & pepper tofu, which, despite being fried, was surprisingly very light and fluffy. I inhaled a lot of that tofu. We also got an order of garlic pea vines, which are delightfully delicious. Easily one of my favorite vegetables that I don't often eat. Boyfriend got their garlic chicken and really enjoyed it. (My dad tried some of it, too, and also really enjoyed it.) We were extremely satisfied with our entire meal and happy to have some traditional Cantonese food for Christmas dinner! read more

This restaurant is the very definition of a "dive!" At night the restaurant is hard to find because it is not well lite. The signage is dim. The building actually looks deserted at night. The parking lot is not well lite. Once inside, the interior is reminiscent of a restaurant from the 1950s. Aside from the physical plant of the restaurant, the food is excellent and the service very good. We ordered the pork patty with salted fish, the bitter melon with beef, hairy melon with Chinese vermicelli hot pot, and bok-choy with soybean wraps. The food came to our table hot. All the dishes were incredibly delicious. If you enjoy retro looking restaurants, this place is your place. The bathrooms were old but neat. Came here today for a group lunch with friends. The food is solid and decent old school Cantonese food. To me, that's delicious and down home cooking! I got the fish fillets with bok choy lunch special. The fish was excellent, very fresh and tender and I'm sure they had just pulled the fish out of the tank and cooked it, it was that fresh tasting! The bok choy was cooked to perfection to me, still crunchy but not under done. There was a very nice clear sauce over it and was perfect, not too salty. Two of our friends got the ginger and green onions beef. They both loved it because they both said they loved onions! I got an order of the Szechuan eggplant to take home and it was delicious! They had a very nice piquant sauce over it, not too spicy and very pleasantly sweet and sour-ish. The service was friendly and attentive, but a little scatterbrained and haphazard. They forgot to pass out soup spoons for our soup, mixed up the orders, but we couldn't really get mad because they were so sweet to us and were trying very hard. If you order takeout, take a look at your order before you leave because they handed me the wrong order. Once I brought it to their attention, they were very apologetic and quick to rectify it. This is the second time I've visited this restaurant and it was consistent, fresh and fast! Overall good but pricey for 3 dishes all though they were hearty positions and can feed 4. I got the salt and pepper fried fish ( love it) , the mustard greens and mushrooms ( love it) and the crispy noodles combination protein ( next time I'm just getting chicken the shrimps were not abundant it was good but di). Overall good sauces, not too salty and very fresh! I def recommend you eat the fish crispy if you can in the restaurant instead of letting it get soft in the to go container but it was still good! I hate giving negative reviews to what seems like a small family-owned business. We live in the area, and finally tried this restaurant for a decent-size take out order. It was one of the worst meals we've experienced in a while. Half-cooked onions, virtually zero taste, and barely passable. How does one make Tofu and green beans taste terrible? They found a way. But no, seriously, Chinese food is my faaaaave food and since moving to the upper East Bay, I cannot find GREAT, authentic Chinese food. Had a day out with my kiddo, mom, and nieces and nephew and decided to try this place out. As you enter the restaurant you'll notice it hasn't been updated in ages, but I didn't mark it down for that, because usually all great Chinese food restaurants have the chairs and decor from the 80's that are greasy, no matter how much you wipe them down. Glassware and eating utensils, very dingy. Nothing that would stop me from eating here again. We came in right before 4pm and the server allowed us to order the lunch special, which was nice. Although, I think it would have been a better idea to just order off the menu since there was 6 of us. We all ordered a lunch plate and it came with egg drop soup. It was your typical egg drop soup. Good, not great. I ordered chowmein and sweet and sour pork. Chow mein was delicious! Sweet and sour pork was again, good, but not great. I also put in an order for combination fried rice, and it was really good. So, I'll definitely go back for the fried rice and chow me in. They have a lot of menu items, so depending on how the other items I taste are, I may update my review. The service is good. The place is small and isn't too big where you need many servers. There was a good amount of people dining when we were there, so it felt like a local favor it. I didn't use the restroom so I can't tell you if it was clean or not. All in all, I would come again. Ngl, it has been the best cheap Chinese food I've had in the area. There are some bougie restaurants in the area, but that's not what I'm looking for. Decided to break away from our tried-and-true Chinese restaurant that we always order from, and decided to try out Little HK, as it was still relatively close to where we lived. Little HK does have its own private parking lot, so finding parking is not an issue at all. However, the lot itself has little to no light, so when we were pulling into it at night, the pitch-black lot was a bit eerie, and definitely did not feel very safe. On the evening we visited, they were definitely understaffed. As there was no one at the counter to greet us, and no one working the floor. We waited around for about 5mins until thankfully, someone poked their head out from the back and noticed us. Service however was pretty friendly, and we were in and out in pretty short order. For dinner, we ordered the Salt & Pepper Work-Roasted Sole Fillet, the Bitter Melon Beef, and the Dried Scallop & Egg White Fried Rice. While the sole fillet was definitely really good, and came with pretty sizable portions, the rest of the dishes were only average at best. Prices are a bit higher here than our typical haunt, but overall, still reasonable given the current inflation. read more
