I've been shopping here for 16 years, and it's a great store if you hit it in the morning. Very chaotic later in the day. That said, I have had to switch my business to Carr's across the street because they recently installed this crazy lighting system in all their refrigerator units. It is a blinding light that you can't avoid looking at as your reach in to get your items, and gives me an instant headache. At first it was just in the milk section so I stopped buying my milk there and went to Carr's for my milk, but now they've installed those lights in the section with the yogurt, butter, eggs, etc. Not sure WHY they did this in the first place ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it")... it is quite obnoxious and I'm sure I'm not the only one walking out with a headache. read more

We bought a couch. When we arrived to take it home they did not have one available. They said to come back in about an hour and they would have one ready for us to take ( coming up from some warehouse ) An hour later they helped us load a bubble wrapped couch into our truck . Once home we discovered candy wrappers between the cushions. The next time we visited the store we noticed that the floor model was gone . We suspect it's on our living room. read more

This is probably the worst Fred Meyer store I've ever been to. The floors are dirty, the deli is horrible, and a lot of the homeless people are shopping there. Well, I'm not complaining. Just saying. Freddy's has remodeled since my update, yet it remains the same. The good things: - More space than the previous layout - Dedicated health food aisles - More options and wider variety of Alaskan-sourced products - Neat cheese bar The bad: - Many notes from my previous review still linger. Crappy parking lot, hard to find employees, lack of reliable product. - Every time, and I am not kidding, every time I go, *something* is marked incorrectly. I watch the checkout screen like a hawk because of how often this happens. Sometimes something is 20 cents off. Sometimes, it's a dollar. I don't care how much of a discrepancy there is -- I will say something and it's really %&#*# annoying that they can't be arsed to update their price tags. This has become such an annoyance, I have started going to other grocery stores because I'm sick of incorrectly displayed prices. - I said it before, and again -- the produce can SUCK. It's sometimes the worse. BE WARY OF GOOD DEALS. Do not, I repeat DO NOT, buy things on super sale. Limp, sad lettuce with blackened edges on the leaves. Strawberries on the cusp of molding. Cilantro that smells rank. Tomatoes with black spots and bruises. Bell peppers that wrinkle when you pick them up. This kind of crap I'd expect from a far-flung village store where bruised avocados sell for $4 each, not a major chain in the biggest city in the state. Fred Meyer should be ashamed for their piss-poor produce. - Major price jumps. Don't be fooled by the "great low price!" sticker you'll see by stuff. I just noticed today that a particular brand of lemonade used to be $2.19 (which was a steal!) and now is priced at $3.49!! The knock-off, corn syrup, "juice-flavored" swill is now $2.19. Some of their "great deals" are anything BUT! - The disgusting apathy of their employees. On two separate occasions, I was seeking out a particular spice in the bulk section. Nothing weird, nothing unusual. And both times they were out. And both times, months apart from each other, was the same irritable young woman. I requested the spice and in a voice reminiscent of Daria's acerbic tone without any of the wit or smarts said, "No. If it's out, it's out. She doesn't come and fill them until tomorrow." Okay. That's cool. Who's she? Should I care who she is? Is she the magic spice fairy? So the spice is in the back (yes, it was) but only the designated spicy fairy is permitted to refill the cheap plastic containers so I can buy some? Apparently so. The second time this happened, when the cashier asked if I found everything okay, I said, "No, I did not, and I would like to speak to a manager" who made a half-hearted attempt to remedy to situation but did clarify that if a product was not on the floor and was in stock, the employee had to go get it. - The alcohol store is annoyingly understaffed during the busiest times. My husband refuses to buy beer there anymore. There will be a line snaking around the vodka and behind the beer at 5pm -- and there will be ONE employee. The ONLY times I have ever seen there be two employees is when they're changing shifts! I think one rare time during Christmas, there were two. I should have taken a photo to document this event as rare as Halley's comet. - I bought husband some ground beef and when I got home and opened up the package, it reeked and was grey inside. Trying to keep from vomiting, I threw it away and called the corporate number. Not an apology. The rep on the phone was bitchy and curt and told me I had to take the meat back to the store for a refund. How about telling your store to stop stocking rancid meat? - The apparel section is woefully understaffed. The last time I went in to try a few pieces on, I accidentally dropped my sweater and when I picked it up, I realized it fell in a wet, sticky pile of what I could only identify as human baby batter. I just about barfed and I had to hunt someone down to say, "Hi there, I dropped my sweater in the changing room and there was SPLOOGE ON THE FLOOR." Clearly, no one had been around the area for a while or had conducted a dressing room check. I was so, so, so, so, so grossed out I ended up calling corporate (for what it's worth, the employees I talked to were horrified and apologized) and eventually connected to the assistant manager who said that none of his employees actually reported it until he went and talked to them. I was offered a gift card to replace my sweater that I had to throw away. That was appreciated. FM ticks me off because they don't really have to try. They know a lot of Alaskans rely on them for not only groceries, but other sundries, furniture, and clothing. So they can take advantage of that. They can sell us bad meat, rotten vegetables, and practice dishonest pricing, yet laud how great they are and how they have the best prices. In all honesty, I've started shopping more at Crack Carrs because while I may have to duck behind an aisle when a brawl breaks out, at least my apples are fresh. read more

The remodel of the Northern Lights store in Anchorage AK looks nice, but FM has done nothing to curtail the aggressive panhandling that happens in the parking lot. Occasionally they are even waiting by our car as my wife tries to unload groceries and secure our kids. Perhaps the finishing touch here would be to help keep your customers from getting shaken down after leaving your store. read more

I love Freddie's but not this one at Seward Hwy and Northern Lts. I have spoken to others who agree with me that the hip-hop sexy lyrics on the Muzak is downright offensive. The produce is often wilted or even rotten. The variety of produce isn't there either. On the plus side the meat and fish are pretty good, much better than the Carrsway. I buy quite a bit of my clothing here: Carhart's, Levi's, and underwear, especially. When I go to Freddie's on Dimond- the store is cleaner, bigger, stocked with lots of fresh produce and *no disco music*. read more

Fred Meyer's is my goto store for general shopping, the prices are usually more than Walmart, but less than Carr's. Fred Meyer's usually has a decent selection of products, & unlike Carrs stores the majority of their grocery items are not expired. Also, there's usually a sufficient number of cashiers working. read more

I'm kind of in love with grocery stores. Especially the ones with good produce. Fred Meyer is fantastic. We kept going back for groceries because it's the best in the area. There is a great lounge area upstairs by the Starbucks. read more

I absolutely adore this freddies...the kroger and dylan company is something my family and i do for nearly 15 years we had a monday thang going where my mom grandma and i and my uncle we'd all get together and go out for lunch and then go out shoppin walmart and then to kings or king soopers sometimes we'd take a long excursion to all sorts of other places after 15 years you tend to lose track of all of where you would go ..all you remember is that your family in the car out for a joy ride and the destination wasn't really important but always we'd go to kings for just a quick run in or a lengthy massive shopping trip. My granddaddy and i also would go midweek occasionally to pick up bread and milk from kings those memories are also very treasured memories as he passed away about 2 years ago. Moving to Alaska and seeing fred Meyers i was a little trepidatious sometimes from state to state the ball gets dropped in massive chain stores..i have not been disappointed with this location or the one in wasilla. Always fresh sushi and the store makes me excited to go tootlin around and look at all the different things to eat and try. This particular trip i actually have been out ...i fell and sprained my ankle and so i have been out of work for the last 4 days and haven't ventured out of the house stayin off my foot and taking it easy...i was super excited to get out even for just a lil bit and the only place i wanted to go was freddies. The store is always super bright and colorful. I always can find more than what i need and this particular i also found collapsing crutches so i was more than happy! read more

I have been shopping at this Fredmeyers for a couple months now and must say, by far the worst store I have ever been in. Twice wile I was in the parking lot someone came up and tried to sale me drugs. Once we were shopping and a guy tried to still my wife's purse out of our cart. I am also handicapped and every time they have no mart carts or you see teenagers riding on them. Very disappointing store. My advice, go to the Dimond Fredmeyers much cleaner and excellent service. read more

On the subject of shoplifting: There has been recent article's in the ADN regarding shoplifting in the stores around Anchorage and where APD started a new program to have uniformed and plain cloths police in the Fred Myer stores to help with this big problem (Shoplifting). Now I have mention this program to many employee's at the NL store and NONE of them heard anything about this program. WHAT is going on with management, not informing your people about this program? read more

I usually pick up my prescription in Soldotna because that's the closest Fred Meyers from where I live, and the last few times they have run out of my refills there, so it's not by choice I have to find a different Pharmacy to get my medicine. Anyway I am not on the road system and I have to travel either by a skiff or small plane to get on the road, I came to Anchorage which is 220 miles on the road to get my refill at Fred Meyers on Northern Lights and the person working there said I've been getting my refills somewhere else and they weren't going to give it to me because I haven't been getting my refills from them, and said it was too much for him. I didn't know Fred Meyers did this to people, I am an Alaskan native and I felt like I was being discriminated, because this same store treated another Alaskan native like this before! I usually pick this store to shop whenever I make it to this city, but after being treated like that I was kind of hurt we have been loyal to this store. Anyways after that treatment I feel that it's not going to be one of the stores I feel welcome to. I have 11 children and they shop there too. I am the 2nd Chief in my village, as a leader I try to be helpful and respectful to everyone. If they have rules I could have had Soldotna's store call them and tell them they couldn't give me my meds because they were out! I drive from Homer and it's close to a 2 hour drive and I have to drive back down because I have to catch a plane or skiff ride back home. I can't afford to stay in Soldotna or Homer to wait for Fred's to get a refill which could be few days. It just left a feeling of heartbreak to be treated that way at one of my favorite stores. read more

This was my first time at Freddie's. I was helping my daughter set up her apartment. We enjoyed the fresh produce and large variety of products. What we were so excited about was the sale in housewares ! Fifty percent off of Pyrex and forty percent off of baking pans. I would recommend a look around this store. read more

So I'm new to Anchorage, and this was my first experience with Fred Meyer last night. The shopping was ok...it seemed like the store carries a lot of crap and forgot about some of the essentials. Anyway, I got what I needed and headed to the checkout. The woman in front of me was buying cupcakes for her kid's birthday I think, and the checkout person for some reason thought it was a good idea to keep turning the package upside down which of course smashed the cupcakes and took off the frosting the bakery had customized for her. When the customer became upset instead of apologizing to her or trying to make it right the lady just said that it wasn't her fault and she was just trying to find the upc. She then just sat there staring at the customer instead of doing anything. So awkward! A manager was called over to help AND HE DID THE SAME THING...no apology, no ideas about how to make it right, and then just stared. In the end he told the women there was nothing he could do since the bakery was closed and she could have the smashed cupcakes for free if she wanted. Seriously! I definately won't be using this store for anything if I can help it...unfortunately, these places seem to be all over the city. read more
