Dr. Slater is probably the nicest and most sincere doctor I've had the pleasure of going to see. He genuinely is a nice man, and will talk and tell you stories (if you are in the mood). Most Docs just wanna get you in and out like cattle. He takes the time to help you understand your eye problems and will answer your questions in a layman terms so you can follow. His staff are friendly, courteous, and answer your questions knowledgeably. They also go out of their way to try and find ways to use your insurance to its maximum value, and try very hard to save you money. If you want to be treated like a human being go see Dr. Slater, if you prefer to be pushed through the cattle gates then go somewhere else. read more

very very bad services!! They had great frame collections but the services are just frustrating!! I came in and ordered the frame i liked. They didn't save my record and couldn't find it. They didn't call me back at all. After a week, i called back and they lose all my records again and didn't have the frame i was looking for. This is just very unprofessional and frustrating. Don't ever come here unless you want to waste your time for a pair of eye glasses. I purchased a pair of Maui Jim prescription sunglasses for about $750. The glasses were fine and the service ok. But I lost one the nose pads, not terribly uncommon and returned to the shop for help. I was "helped" by a young man who was surly and incompetent. A He said they had no pads, would have to order them, and I would need to pay for them. EVERY other eyewear shop I have been to offers that service without charge and does so gladly. Everyone needs to make a profit but I thought that was cheap and the service was definitely rude. As I left the shop the clerk hassled me further w/o provocation. I think you can do better. read more

Nowadays customer service isn't what it used to be but at Dr. Slater's the doctors and staff wowed me with their friendly, helpful and professional service. I was referred to the office by a co-worker and will happily recommend them to my own circle of friends and family. I came in for a standard eye exam with Dr. Amy Chi. Dr. Chi was warm and personable and took the time to answer my questions and go over the results of my exam. I have some very specific needs when it comes to my vision given my astigmatism and issues with my cornea but Dr. Chi put my worries to rest and provided me with some great information about my specific eye needs. My insurance doesn't cover contacts and Dr. Chi was kind enough to explore some budget friendly options for me. I returned a second time to select glasses and the technician who assisted me took great care in helping me select a pair of glasses that would complement my face shape. They also advised me of additional colors for the styles that I was interested in. Their wide selection of frames and brands made it very difficult to narrow down my choices but the technician was very patient with me while I tried on endless pairs. Overall my experience with this office was extremely pleasant and I will certainly be returning here year after year for all my vision needs. read more

I'm glad I don't have to worry about my eyes too much. But it never hurts to get them checked out every once in a while. Had my most recent eye exam with Dr. Chi and everything went according to how I envisioned it. After a few tests, I was happy to hear her say that I still had excellent vision. Which was great news considering I couldn't even remember the last time I had an eye exam and that my career has me sitting in front of a computer 8 hours a day. Dr. Chi has a professional demeanor that puts you at ease. Great with kids(my daughter had her first eye checkup w/Dr. Chi as well) or adults, she breaks down the most technical explanation (astigma-what?!?) into simple pieces of information for the general public to understand. read more

Really great customer service. Went in randomly because I have been looking for a new pair of frames and was impressed with how nice and friendly their service was. Yes, they are in the service industry and trying to make a sale. So I get it, it's their job to be friendly. None the less, genuine or self-concerned the outward appearance was positive. I was helped for quite a while choosing many different frames. At the end of it all I wanted to browse other stores to get more options and did not buy a frame there. I was not pressured nor felt like they were disappointed when I left. Often a sales rep will get irritated when they spend a lot of time with you and they do not get the sale. I did not feel this. This office and their staff go the extra mile for their patients. I have a special needs child who requires glasses and there are some challenges in fitting her correctly. I need to preface this review by saying I was blown away with the kind, compassionate treatment myself and my family received from several people at this office, including Dr Slater himself. We had several visits, and tried lots of different frames. They even ordered frames our ophthalmologist recommended, that Dr Slater's office didn't regularly carry. In the end we got as close as we are going to get to a proper fit for my daughter. They are also much less expensive than every other place we spoke with. I came to see her because i had an eye infection and through a quick examination, she was able to dertermine the cause and offer me a prescription for eye drops. I've shopped around and this office has reasonable rates and I was astonished by the service. My Dr. was completely patient and informative. Compared to the docs I've seen throughout the years, he impressed me about educating me about the condition of my current eyesight and the future hw I have to prolong my vision. Going to any medical establishment can be a very tedious and daunting task. I am often reminded of livestock, and feel that I'm just being pedaled along by someone who doesn't want to be there, doing a job they don't want to do, just to make a dollar. My previous eye doctor's office felt exactly like this. But this is no longer the case now that Dr. Chi and staff at Fred Slater & Associates has entered the picture. Based on a recommendation of a friend, I made an appointment to see Dr. Chi and the friendly faces at the Campbell office. I'm so glad that I did. From the moment I stepped foot into the office, I was greeted with pleasantries and happy faces. The standard exam was quick, painless, and entertaining. Dr. Chi asked many questions that that my previous doctor did, as well as others. She makes it a point to get to know her patients, and also make sure you are comfortable and understand what's going on. Picking out a new pair of frames was equally impressive and informative. I can't wait to go back, not an easy feat with modern-day medical establishments in my opinion. I highly recommend Dr. Chi and her crew, even if you think you are happy with your current eye doctor. Want icing on the cake? There's a great coffee shop next door, as well as Orchard City Kitchen. Best eye exam ever! Was way overdue for an exam for contacts AND a new pair of glasses and being in the pruneyard now decided to call Slater Optometry ... the super helpful receptionist asked me when I wanted to come in and I jokingly said "now" ... but that ended up working out! Love it when that happens. Less than 30 minutes later I'm screened and examined with a follow-up scheduled for new contacts ... state of the art equipment, warm and welcoming office, incredibly friendly staff, and Dr. Chi ROCKS. While I may slightly influenced by learning my vision has actually IMPROVED a bit, this really was the best eye exam ever. Looking forward to my next visit. The whole office knew I was very unhappy. They tried and failed to fix this several times. Nothing more to discuss with them. The Details: UPDATE 3/9/18 I just received outstanding eye care and glasses from an optometrist and optician office near Pruneyard. What Chin and Slater couldn't accomplish for new glasses in 4 or 5 attempts over several months in 2017 this office accomplished in one week! After 60 years of wearing glasses and many optometrists as I move around it was Slater's office was the only problem. They tried to blame me. UPDATE 11/20/17 I wrote a four star review here in 2012. Well, I tried to use Chin and Slater for glasses. It was a nightmare of awful service, but the people were very nice. Background: My first couple of visits in 2012 were due to extensive mucus in my eyes by evenings, often forcing me to go to bed early because I couldn't see much. My previous optometrist had no suggestions for a cure after a couple of years so I fired him. Dr. Chin did have part of the solution right, hot compresses over my eyes, but this was often inconvenient. Try heating the pad on long road trips, and the process ate time. I asked her for a recommendation to an ophthalmologist, a profession I knew little about. She told me that her treatment was the only one available and she wouldn't refer me. So I talked my way into an ophthalmologist exam, was diagnosed with dry eyes, and she recommended using artificial tear drops that you can get cheap anywhere. Problem fixed. It sure seems that optometrists should know this simple and cheap solution for dry eyes! Such treatments are in their job description. August 9 - mid November, 2017: I recently went to Chin for an eye checkup and new glasses, my first in about 5 years. I have worn glasses, and sometimes contacts, for over 60 years. I've moved around a bit and have seen many optometrists. This process is usually boring and routine. Never a surprise or problem. Until I met Chin and Slater. I have bad eyesight and need short distance progressive lenses for computer use and tasks and another pair of glasses for distance use such as driving, mountain biking, etc. For this visit I wanted the task glasses upgraded. After 4 - 5 attempts to get the prescription right over several months and each time giving me glasses that were mostly out of focus they fired me. However, they kept the insurance money and now I have to wait a year before insurance will cover me again! I had asked for the insurance company to be reimbursed so I could start over with someone competent. They kept the money, I got nothing useful. Both Chin and Slater failed and failed and failed and failed to put me in a decent set of lenses. According to Slater, Chin got my prescription wrong. For 60 years I've had no problems or rejects. My current glasses still work well. I know what is possible. My current glasses should be your standard also. I'll describe: Really, to read the keyboard with their lenses when I'm either sitting or at my standing workstation I had to move my head to look down and put my chin on my chest! With my current and previous progressive lenses for the past 15+ years I just look down. I don't need to keep positioning my head. You know, the lenses are progressive. Look up for distance, down for close up. 20 years ago this technology was cutting edge. It is routine now, except for Chin and Slater. My task / computer glasses also work fine around the house. A slight fuzziness starts at about 5 feet but I don't need to keep swapping glasses all day and evening. With Slater and Chin's lenses I would have to do that. I can also use my distance glasses for computer use and do in coffee shops all the time. Not quite as nice as my computer glasses but adequate. My current task / computer lenses are so good that I can comfortably work at a computer for hours then forget to swap glasses and drive around town safely. I can't read the small street signs a hundred yards away, no biggee. A few weeks ago I forgot to swap glasses and drove my wife to the airport at night with my computer glasses. Chin and Slater examined these lenses several times but can't come close to replicating them. I'm very concerned that their existing progressive lens patients are stuck with sub-standard lenses and don't know it. They never experienced a good set of lenses as I have - many times from various optometrists and opticians. read more

So you dont get to see Dr. Slater. You see one of the other optometrist. That being said, here are the pro's and cons: Pros: 1. Dr. Isabella Yu is very attentive to detail. She took time to make sure my glasses and contacts were fitted properly. She is very smart, and explained my different type of contact lenses, the effects of different prescriptions and my options for bifocal lenses. 2. They plug into the insurance system so the check in procedure is very smooth. Cons: There is a heavy pressure sales job get the most expensive glasses and lenses to the point where the snow job is annoying. He sounded almost annoyed in having to explain the pros and cons of different options. To be fair to them every optometrist I've visited tried to oversell me on things I did not want or need. So if you want good care and can resist the snow job this is your place.Dr. Yu is the primary reason I gave this place 5 stars. If you find aggressive sales tactics annoying keep searching and tell me what you find :) read more

i had a pretty terrible experience getting my recent glasses made. it took three attempts to get it right. i want to thank Mark who jumped in after the second botched attempt. Mark sat down with me and double checked everything and found the problem (lab error) and the third pair is perfect! Mark is friendly, experienced and knowledgeable. from now on Mark is my go-to man! if not for Mark i'm pretty sure there would have been a fourth attempt -- with a different doctor. so 2 stars for the experience + 5 stars for mark = 3.5 stars read more

A friend recommended I see Dr. Chi for my eye exam. I'm so glad I did. She is super friendly and extremely nice and patient during the whole which is better 1 or 2 ordeal. I always get so anxious during that test because I want the best prescription possible and I never know if i'm answering correctly. Dr. Chi assured me that she always double & triple checks the final outcome. I was really pleased with her exam. The staff was also really friendly and helped me pick out an awesome pair of glasses. I've read some other reviews saying that they are more expensive, but I would rather come here and get a professional exam with high quality materials, than to go to Costco to get an inadequate exam with poor quality glasses. Fred Slater himself is pretty good, does the exams well, answers questions. But he is rarely there. I got an exam with the other doctor and it was pretty curt, did not want to answer any questions and so. More, the Vallco\Cupertino center is pretty crampled and has less eye testing equipment than other places. read more

Dr. Dally is great! He's been my optometrist now for about 6-7 years and he is such a nice guy. He is always fun to speak to because he seems to really care about his patients. Every time I see him (which is only once a year for my routine check), he makes a point to ask how my life is doing and what's new. He's very personable. He's always open to any questions I have for him. Last time I asked him what a "damaged" eye looks like, and he broke out a textbook with a bunch of crazy looking pictures of eyes and he explained to me each picture. Very interesting. Last time I was there (in December) he told me my prescription was the same so I didn't need a new pair of glasses...that I could keep using my old ones.........so since I was covered under insurance (mostly), I ended up getting my first pair of prescription sunglasses. I love them! It didn't even dawn on me that I could get those there. They have a great selection of designer sunglasses. They're Dolce & Gabbana and totally fabulous! Now I can look cool and see! read more

I recently ordered my first set of contacts here. I have been wearing glasses for years and finally made the switch. I found this location from my VSP insurance provider list. I was examined by Dr. Amy Chi. Dr. Chi was very pleasant and thorough with her eye exam. She was extremely knowledgeable and explained to me all the pros and cons for switching to contact lenses. She even took some extra time to show me how to apply them and patiently made sure I was able to apply them. I also ordered some prescription sunglasses on the same visit. The front staff were very helpful and showed me the different sunglass options. He helped me try on a number of frames and made sure they fit my face properly. He also gave me options on different lenses at different costs. My sunglasses were ready within a few days. My husband and I went to see Dr. Amy Chi-Fernandez today and had a fantastic experience. We were long overdue for an eye exam and had heard about her through mutual friends. She was super friendly and answered all our questions and concerns. I am currently 5 1/2 months pregnant and was concerned if my vision would be affected. She assured me that if my exam reflected a stronger perscription during my pregnancy and later after giving birth, it changed, that she would re-examine me again. I would highly recommend anyone in the SouthBay to check them out. I also liked the fact that they had someone there to explain how I could use my benefits for contacts or glasses since having worked in HR I know how confusing benefits can be to people. I recently went in for an eye exam at "Fred Slaters" and had a great experience. I was in need of new contacts and had been using the same pair of daily contacts for months on end and I hadn't had my eyes checked in two years. The front desk staff made me feel welcome as I came in for my exam, had me fill out my paperwork, and sent me right to Dr. Chi within minutes. Dr. Chi was very personable and knowledgeable. She asked why I'd been wearing my daily contacts for so long and then offered an explanation on why I should stop doing that. The eye exam she administered was quick and painless as we moved from machine to machine eventually finishing on the dreaded "puff-of-air" test. After we finished the exams, she gave me recommendations on daily to monthly contacts, the different brands of contacts, and the proper way to use them. All-in-all, I had a great experience at "Fred Slaters" and recommend Dr. Chi to anyone and everyone that have vision and eye care needs! read more

If you need contacts super fast, go here! I was running low and they had me in and out with a new prescription within about half an hour. The staff was welcoming and professional. I don't wear standard contact lenses and they usually have to be ordered, so I was not expecting to have my new contacts anytime soon. At other optometrists' offices it has taken up to two weeks and I needed to return to the office to pick them up. What a pleasant surprise that not only did they send me home with a new pair that day, but the very NEXT DAY I checked the mail and had a full year's supply. A 24 hour turnaround for a year's supply of special order lenses - I was shocked. Thank you so much! I will definitely be back for more contacts in the future. Great service! read more

I don't even know where to begin. I think the phrase to sum it all up is "a true breath of fresh air". I called Dr. Slater's office at around 10:00am yesterday to inquire about renewing my prescription. I've neglected my poor little eyes and hadn't had an eye exam in nearly 4 years. Not to mention, after wearing glasses for well over a decade I decided to take the leap and begin wearing contacts. I spoke with April over the phone. Having never used my EyeMed discount program, she went to the liberty of calling them for me to figure out what discounts I was eligible for. After realizing the EyeMed discount program I had was poor to say the least, and really didn't make any difference on my expenses, she went above and beyond for me and my pocketbook without my even asking. I was blown away even before stepping into their office. And then I walked in 4 hours later, noticing they were slammed. It's the holiday season- not surprising. Yet, they still somehow managed to fit me in. They were all very warm and welcoming, despite the craziness. Having managed 2 retail stores, I know all too well how difficult it is to pull this off. From their fun, positive energy between themselves and their customers, I immediately knew these are people who like what they do and they care about the satisfaction of their clients. Dr. Slater was very attentive and went to the liberty of explaining to me how a contact lens fits over the eye and the importance of the breathability of the lens. The next thing I knew I had a contact lens in my eye and I could see! Holy cow I couldn't believe it. I could see without glasses! Anyways, I had no idea I was going to be walking out of the office seeing perfectly without glasses. I thought there was going to be some sort of lag time; what a pleasant surprise! Afterwards, Mark took the time to instruct me on how to use the contact lenses, take them out, etc. He had the patience of a saint. Words cannot express how grateful I am with this staff, particularly April, Mark and Dr. Slater. What wonderful, attentive people. While contacts are expensive- no surprise there- they went well above the call of duty in taking care of me. I had no problem dishing out whatever I needed to for this business. it was well worth every penny. They are honest people who clearly care about your business, and they truly capture the personable, old fashioned customer service that unfortunately seems to be a dying trade. read more

Dr. Dally is my one and only optician. I've been 'seeing' him for almost 30 years. My father, mother, and grandfather were patients of Dr. Dally also. Has always been very helpful and easy going. Recently thought I had something in my eye, I didn't know it at the time but I had 'corneal ulcer'. I called them and he had me come in right away and had me set up with meds with in 10 min of showing up. I could have lost my eye if it got really bad. I don't know what I'll do if he ever moves or retires. read more

I fist started just like Carla in the Vallco location with my parents and recently decided to go back after switching to Site for Sore Eyes. Let me tell you the first-class customer service, selection and high quality lenses cant be beat. They have alot of well know designer glasses at a moderate price. Some are expensive but worth it. The staff and Doctors make you feel very comfortable and the place is always spotless. I would highly recommed Dr. Slaters offices both at Vallco and the Prunyard. read more

I have been Dr.Slater's patient for some years and been satisfied with the service, with the exception of a miscommunication around which contacts I preferred. I called the office Sunday night and left a message to tell them to hold off on ordering those contacts. Mark promptly called me Monday morning and left a message (since I missed his call) that he had stopped the order and to call him back when I could talk. I called him and he told me that he thought he could save me some money. Now, I love to hear that. He then said he would check with my insurance and get back to me. He called me back the next day and told me I would see a credit for $499! I was over the moon. I am very grateful to Mark for making this extra effort to proactively save me some money.
