I love this entire staff. Always super pleasant, super easy to talk to, friendly... because let's be honest: what was once considered bare minimum customer service is now what we actually get up on Yelp to rave about since it's so rare. Also, it's really freakin' important to have a cool staff at the eye doctor, because you are going there with the intention(well, a lot of us vision-impaired folks do) of picking out a pair, or two in my case, of glasses that you are gonna be wearing for at least one year. I actually enjoy when it comes to that time of year to go glasses shopping, because the staff at this office will be as hands on as literally telling you that the pair you loved but just weren't quite right when on is because the bridge of the nose piece is a pinch too small for your features, or they will stand back and let you know that they are there for questions if need be. I consider myself a pretty elite, pro shopper who knows exactly what i like, but this is a very rare instance where I prefer the hands-on involved help approach. Especially because, if I find a pair that is PERFECT, except, they are blue and who wants blue, nine times out of ten, they can go online right next to you and order them in a different color. If you have a not so caring person working at the Opthometrist office, or one that very clearly doesn't feel any type of sincere warmth towards glasses, you probably wouldn't even go bother asking them if they offer different colors in your favorite style. All of the actual (are they doctors? There's like 4 different ways to get licensed to perform eye exams these days so I honestly haven't a clue) doctors are really nice, easy to work with, and then the support staff and everyone in between are just really fun. They all really seem to care if i walk out excited about my new glasses. And for the days i take the contacts route, they send me home with multiple (3, yes 10 days of THREE TYPES) samples of contacts in each price range and then tell you to just call and order when you decide which you like best. Obviously they offer competitive discounts for bulk orders, and it's a pretty easy system to place refill orders. It doesn't hurt that they offer all the latest lens technology as well as some super cute designer sunglasses. And, once you buy your frames, they say 7-10 days, but in 3 years I've never once had it take a full week! They text or call or both when your order arrives, they stay open pretty late (7:30) so you can actually pick them up, too. They always want to know how your experience was, which brings us here, to my novel length yelp review/book. I really like coming here. It would take a LOT to convince me to go elsewhere. Oh, and quick FYI to any parents reading: I am a new mom, and i had to bring my 7 month old baby along for this exam and frame selection, and they were SUPER accommodating and kind about it. Let's be honest: babies make things like this way harder. Mine wanted to be held during my exam the second he watched me disappear behind that big silver eye thingy, and nobody batted an eye or showed a single sign of irritation. They also were very kind when my baby wanted to stare endlessly, flirt with, and smile creepily at the young lady helping me with my glasses orders. She definitely went beyond the expected, and gushed over him and completely pretended not to notice when he would accept nothing less than to hold his own pair of sample glasses from the racks. I silently prayed he wouldn't throw or break them, and he didn't, but still, he could have. And they totally tolerated us with a smile. CONCLUSION: You need glasses or contacts? COME HERE! They are the best, hands down, they actually make it enjoyable. When has that EVER happened?? I thought so. read more

What a rip off! I ordered a pair of Raybans and I wanted to use my VSP insurance. They told me on the phone it would be like $30. Then when I got there it was $120! I asked the guy doesn't my insurance cover it? And he said they are charging $225 for the frame? WTF? The sunglasses are only $165 at Sunglass Hut! Just because I have VSP insurance they charge $345 for a pair of $165 sunglasses??? I use to like this place but now I think it's a RIP OFF....Never shop there again! read more

About an hour ago, Dr. Fred Slater called me and said "we don't want you back" and hung up the phone on me. Can you imagine a doctor doing that? Arrogant and unprofessional at a minimum. Here is the background... A few months back I had my eyes examined. Settled on some prescription bifocals. I wasn't thrilled with them when I got them. Fred Slater said "try the progressives, I guarantee them." So I did. Paid significantly more and after wearing them for 2 weeks full time as they recommended, I could not get used to them. I returned to go back to the bifocals. Not perfect but they were good enough. I then asked about a refund on the difference of the expensive progressives they "recommended and guaranteed" (versus the bifocals) and was told they don't give refunds. That is when I asked Dr. Slater to call me. And he did an hour ago. Re-read my first sentence above. I am still floored. A couple other comments. They tried to upsell me on everything. Their prices are outrageous compared to say Costco or Sears to begin with. Another point, the people in their office I felt treated me poorly each time I went back in to go from bifocals to progressives then back to bifocals. They also seemed unhappy. I certainly won't be going back and I recommend you consider my experience before you do. read more

Dr. Slater and his team are the best when it comes to getting your eyes checked and helping to pick out glasses. I have been going to Dr. Slater for years and each time is just as fantastic as my first visit. The staff is great! They are friendly, helpful and have great taste in glasses. First, they work with you when you have a busy schedule. I like that I can make my appointments when it fits with my work schedule and that I don't feel rushed through the appointment like I have experienced at other places. Andy runs the front office really efficiently, so the customer service experience is top-notch. All of the staff are extremely polite and helpful. During the exam, Dr. Slater is very personable and takes his time to make sure your prescription is exactly what you need. Their frame selection includes the latest styles, so you know you will leave looking very stylish when you leave. Even though I don't live in the Bay Area anymore, I can definitely recommend Dr. Slater and will try to see if I can't schedule my eye exams with him when I come out to California to visit. read more

I asked specifically what the out-of-pocket cost for a MEDICAL exam plus refraction for both glasses and contacts would cost. The girl on the phone gave me the price. Imagine my surprise when I was charged nearly twice the price quoted on the phone. Had I not been in desperate need of a new prescription I wouldn't have gone through all this (or paid for it). Adding insult to injury--his prescriptions expire after a year. If you pretty much just wear contacts (like I do) and save the glasses for emergencies, you know that your prescriptions don't change every year; it can be two or three years easily between them. Now, you should get a full eye exam every year, yes, but you don't always need a refraction. Most other opthamologists/optometrists that I've dealt with don't do this. Oh, and, looking at my paperwork later, I just realized that they never gave me my prescription for the glasses. Needless to say, I will not be going back. I'll be getting my new lenses from 1-800-Contacts and the glasses (once I wrest the paperwork from them) from somewhere else. Are they being blatantly dishonest or are they all completely inept... I'm not sure, but I was left with a very bad feeling. read more

I went with my daughter today for her eye exam, and to order a new pair of glasses for her. Everyone in the office was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Slater was very warm, and did a great job of explaining to both of us what he was looking for, what he found, and what it means in plain English during a very thorough exam. When he found out that my daughter is leaving soon for military service, he was very excited for her, and shared some of his own stories from his Air Force service days. What a great experience! It only took a few minutes for my daughter to find very cute frames for a very reasonable price, and is excited to have improved vision in a week or so when the finished glasses come in. I have been going to Dr. Slater's office for a couple of years, and I always like the experience (as much as someone can enjoy going to the eye doctor). The employees are very friendly and helpful, and they are great at remembering to follow through with calling back. I go to Dr. Amy Chi, and she is knowledgeable and very nice. I was trying out a new prescription because I seemed to be seeing a little fuzzier, but the test concluded that I liked my previous prescription. Dr. Chi gave me the option to try out the new pair and told me to call in a few days and let them know which prescription I preferred for my new contact lens order. When I called back, they were very kind on the phone and put in the order. They were even nice enough to call back because they had heard that the shipping method I chose had been unreliable, and they didn't want me to lose my order. I have worn prescription glasses from Dr. Slater and his team for over 12 years, and every pair still looks and works well (unlike my eyes, haha.) Before I met Dr. Slater, I thought that all optometrists were the same: they tell you your eyesight has declined and then pressure you to buy expensive glasses. *But Dr. Slater is a BIG EXCEPTION.* Before I found this practice, my family and I avoided optometrists like the plague: I wear a specialized (read: expensive) pair: I am near-sighted with astigmatism and need spring hinges/wide sizes for my broader-than-average head. I also want glasses that look good with several outfits and don't leave red pressure marks on my nose. Many optometrists find ways to charge extra for such "features," but not Dr. Slater. Despite my detailed prescription, I now pay less for my glasses than my coworkers do. My current pair is a thick black-rimmed designer number with all the features I wanted. My insurance covered the entire cost-- I paid $0. Several of my coworkers have the same insurance coverage and deductible, but paid $100-200 more just to get glasses with *fewer features*. Some "settled" for uglier pairs just to "save money." (I recommended Dr. Slater to them.) In over 12+ years, his team never pressured my family into buying a pair. Seriously, not even one sales pitch. His associates patiently let me walk around the store and try on 50+ pairs, including male and genderless pairs. They made suggestions that directly related to my questions-- but no suggestions for features I didn't express interest in. Each time I visited, I found a pair that had all the features I needed at a good price (most recently: $0 with insurance :D!) Finally, my family and I keep returning to this unassuming little practice because of the excellent service. It's actually better than one clinic I accompanied a friend to in San Francisco, (my friend had to wait weeks for an appointment.) Meanwhile, Dr. Slater once took me in without an appointment-- over the holiday season!--- to get new glasses after I misplaced my old pair. Since it was unplanned, I think that he had to work a late because of me (but no complaint from him.) It seems that he's also helped people in emergencies outside of regular business hours. In short, I'm impressed with the service. I've also noticed that Dr. Slater has kept the same workers for many years-- turnover is low to nonexistent (I see the same associates every time I visit. This is a big deal to me: I don't want to support businesses with high turnover and a high level of outsourcing. I prefer to "shop local" and support businesses that keep local workers employed.) In short, I believe I have found an optometrist for life-- and I'm not the only person to feel this way. read more

He is extremely nice and polite and preformed excellent eye examination ,my insurance does not cover vision so the cost of $98.00 is very reasonable. I have been going to Dr. Slater's for galsses for a third generatioin of prescriptioins, both for prescription glasses and sunglasses(about 10 years). I find that they have very good glasses, however, their staff varies with the level of knowledge, especially when it comes to the style of glasses that will work with a particular face. The second prescriptioin glasses really didn't work with my face, so therefore, I spent quite a bit of money on glasses that did not enhance my appearance. This recent time for my third set of glasses the person helping me has much more knowledge than the staff that helped me in the past. I believe the thing is to make sure tospend the time with the knowledgable ones on the staff to get the service that you deserve! read more

I went here after calling multiple places today trying to get in ASAP for an eye exam. I lost my glasses today on a field trip with my child and I have more troubles seeing in the dark, we are taking a family trip soon and I will be driving in the night with my kids so I can't live without my glasses for this. I know it takes time to actually get the glasses after they actually place the order but I figured maybe I could get contacts just to get by until my glasses came. They got me in today at 545, I had to take my 3 little boys with me to the exam (what a task) but Dr Slater and his staff were so understanding, his staff even helped look after my boys while I was getting my exam. I am telling you this place is AMAZING! I will be back for sure! read more

I have seen both Dr Slater and Dr Chi and find them both very friendly and knowledgeable. One several occasions I've asked questions and both Dr's have drawn out the answer on a piece of paper to show me how the eye and prescriptions changes over time or whatever the answer to my question. She is personable, competent, and explains things very clearly. The office staff is very nice as well. Mark, in particular, is wonderful. An old coworker suggested I make this my optometrist six years ago, and I'm glad I took the advice. I've since convinced others to visit here as well. TL;DR: I've only ever had one problem but Kelly resolved it and then some, and I'm happier than I would've been if it hadn't happened at all. Full story: I've never had a problem here but one time a few weeks ago. After my yearly exam, I placed an order for replacement lenses on existing frames. This order was an exact copy of an order a couple years ago, as my prescription had not changed and I have two identical frames. However, the assistant filling out the order seemed relatively new and had a hard time just copying the order, so she asked for help from someone else. He came over and told her to write a few costs down without really asking questions or understanding the situation, but added a (non-trivial) charge that hadn't been present on the first order. When I questioned, he explained that the charge should have been there the first time but was mistakenly not added, but this time he caught it. I accepted this and paid for the order. A week or so later I received the call that my glasses were back so I went to pick them up. After getting them home and comparing the two now-identical sets of glasses, I noticed that the finish was not the same that I had paid for and as was on the older pair. I returned to inquire and spoke to Kelly. Upon my explanation that they should be identical to the other pair which I had brought with me, she pulled my records and went over both orders. After confirming the finish was not correct, Kelly offered to return the new lenses and have them reordered with the correct finish, which I would've been satisfied with. Instead of settling at that, she asked for more details about the previous visit to understand why the orders were different. After I explained the story, she told me that the extra unexpected charge should not have been billed as my insurance covers it, so she immediately refunded that portion of the cost. Had the helping gentleman looked to understand the entire situation this would've been prevented, but thankfully Kelly took the time to ask questions and I ended up with a partial refund which I was not expecting. A week later, the new corrected lenses came in, earlier than expected. For some reason the manufacturing lab returned the wrongly-finishes lenses instead of keeping them, which Kelly was surprised by. Since the lab apparently didn't want them and they're of no use to anyone else, I was offered to just take them home as an extra set. She wrapped them up for protection and I now will keep them in case something should happen to one of the other pair. I now have both pairs of properly-finished prescription glasses and an extra set of lenses just in case, and I'm happy to continue visiting this office. read more

She was very pleasant and extremely courteous, asking all the right questions about my past vision and medical history, so as to give me the best advice on how to best take care of my vision going forward.
