We walked to this winery while exploring the nearby stores. Until 2006, it was Knopp-Metzger department store. Back in the 80s, we came here to look around and it was a five place to visit. Someone needs to educate Bert the very old man who was working the front counter on 2/1 on the ADA state laws of Texas. He was adamant that he needed to ask me what my condition was since I had my service dog present. I tried explaining that it's against HIPAA to ask me what my condition was but instead, he CAN ask the two following questions: 1. "Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?" 2. "What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?" I made sure to answer both questions for Bert but he didn't understand the medical terminology I was communicating so he just kept talking over us and louder. I guess he didn't like for us to know how dumb he is. He's going to end up with a lawsuit on his hands if he keeps it up. To make matters worse, he was literally giving a wine tasting to a couple who were literally HOLDING A DOG IN THEIR ARMS!!!! Was it because we were two minority women together that he decided to interrogate us? I can assure you he didn't interrogate the couple in front of him who had a dog too. Other customers in the store also stood up for us and were trying to educate Bert but he was not listening. Not only did we leave but the customers near who were hearing Bert's outrageous rant ALSO left. They said that they refuse to give this company business because of him. Overall not bad. When we first entered the welcome was a bit cold but it did get warmer. The wine is made there and the owners are in the store. We did the wine tasting and all the wine we had was very good. There are not many locations on Main that has a sweater wine and this is one of those locations that does have a sweater wine if you are looking for one. I love this winery so much, that I have been comming back at least twice a year for the past 15 years.

I had come to this place many years back (probably 8 or so) and remember they sold a wine that I really enjoyed so I was excited to stop by on my recent trip to the area to pick up a bottle. I ended up deciding against that, however, when I saw the wine was about $28 for a bottle. Not that $28 is necessarily totally crazy, it just wasn't worth it to me at the time. I think this is a stop everyone should make when visiting town, it is very easy to pop in and see what they have to offer. This is the original winery in Fredericksburg so it is not very fancy compared to some newer spots nestled on the vineyards of 290, but it sure is convenient if you are in town. read more

The wine was very good and not acidic like some wines tend to be. Alright PAMELA, here is the review you asked for... On Sunday 1/22, me and 6 friends headed to Fredericksburg to celebrate our friend's birthday. We stopped to grab a bite at a local restaurant (which Pamela scoffed at) and then headed to our first stop on our tasting tour... Fredericksburg Winery. When we arrived it was Pamela and another man working. There was casual small talk and then Pamela checked our IDs. She then profiled my friend who has textured hair and almost didn't serve her because she said her hair looked different!! WHAT?!!! We selected our wines and Pamela poured very inconsistently across our group. Some of us getting very small tastings. But honestly, I wasn't too mad about that because the wine there was literal trash. I actually told her I wasn't a fan of one (couldn't finish it because it tasted like orange cough syrup) and when I told her I wasn't a fan her response was "well that's what those grapes taste like so all the wines with that grape will be like that". I'm sorry, so you agree the wine tastes like cough syrup and you still sell it??? Oh and I am just getting started on our experience with Pamela Shmamela. I was catching up with my friend and he was laughing at something I said (because I'm hilarious) and Pam walked over and told him he needed to chill!!! Everyone else was laughing at him and having a good time but she targeting my friend and we are pretty sure it's because he is in the LBGTQIA+ community. She walked away and then I filled in my other friend on what happened. That's when Shmamela walked over and asked if she needed to cut us off and told the other employee that "We have a problem". We were all shookith because we couldn't figure out how things escalated so quickly. Then Pam walked away and came back with the owner. Funny thing is that dude was super nice and he was having a conversation with all of us and cracking jokes. So in closing, I would not recommend this winery, but I would recommend an AA meeting to Pam or at least anger management. She was drinking more wine on the job than all of us doing the tasting combined. Your nasty attitude was not cute Pam. And if you want to know how I got her name, I will quote the lady herself "And by the way, it's Pam for the review". So here is your review Pam. You're probably better off working in a cat food factory where your crappy customer service skills won't be necessary. Try treating people with respect for once, because karma is a thing. If you are walking along in Fredericksburg, do NOT skip this spot. This place had, by far, the BEST Texas wine of our trip (and we visited a lot of wineries). We stopped by back in June and did a tasting and we got to keep the glass which was cute. The man who did our tasting was organized, efficient, and knowledgeable. They also have a spiced holiday wine that we can't wait to open this Christmas, and was available to try in a little heated crock pot. Yummy! All around one of our favorite tastings. read more

This is still my favorite place for texas wine. I've been coming here since 1997 when my mom showed me this little gem. I'm sad to see others not feel their experience was so great. The older guy who helped us was very nice. He answered questions and made time for conversation, even with other people tasting and walking in. I also love the wines! This was the most entertaining yet chivalrous wine tasting we had ever experienced. Cord, the owner is a true down to earth spirited character who humorously rushed us though the fastest wine education ever with a few comical insults thrown in when we misbehaved too much. This was our 3rd wine tasting of the day with a surprisingly great selection of about 15 wines from reds, whites, roses to sweet and port wines. For $10 bucks We got to try 5 dry wines and went with an extra port tasting. All of them were excellent and we ended up buying 4 bottles among us. The Christmas spice wine is excellent too. This wine is low oak which is exactly to our taste. For a small winery, the tasting is well worth it. It not for the faint of heart. read more

I've never felt so alienated going into a winery before. I've been to many wine tastings in many different regions and I have never been treated this way before. Nobody acknowledged us when we walked in. We didn't even get a hello. We waited for a long time for someone to even give us a glance. I finally went up to the woman who was pouring wine and asked her if we could taste. She said she couldn't help us. I felt some hostility from her so I rounded up my friends and got the hell out of there. I don't care if they had the best wines in the world, I'll never step foot into this place again or recommend it. We almost didn't come here because of the surprisingly low rating. But we gave it a chance because it was close to where we were staying and actually ended up going there twice. The service here was fantastic and friendly, unlike some of the stuck up wineries down the street such as Grape Creek. Don't even bother. Seriously. This place has low ranking for a reason: they don't like being in business. A friend organized an awesome wine tasting trip for 20 of our friends. Every winery we hit was so excited to have us, except this one. Fredericksburg Winery literally turned us away. And rudely. There's a way to politely decline business from people who would like to give you money in exchange for the products that you offer, and this winery has NO CLUE how to do that. I can confidently say that none of the 19 other people that were on that trip will ever set foot inside that place with the intention of giving them business. After the man behind the bar rudely dismissed us and blatantly scoffed at the ridiculous idea that people wanted to visit his winery, we all agreed that chocolate was needed. So we all went next door (awesome place), bought a bunch of chocolate, and headed off to the next winery. read more

While trolling the streets of Fredericksburg, we decided to stop into the Fredericksburg Winery to check it out. It's a small but cozy little place and one lady was working behind the bar area. She greeted us right away while she was helping another couple. We decided to try some of the local craft brews they had. We wanted to try the Revolver Blood and Honey, but her keg ran out before she could fill the second cup, so she only charged us for one! #winning!! It was super tasty and we decided to have a seat and finish it before we headed back out. They do allow plastic cups on the street if you want, but we needed to sit down for a minute. I checked out the place and noticed a beverage case that had a great craft beer bottle selection. I would definitely check in again next time I'm in town! read more

First off, the wine is amazing and that's the only reason I'm giving more than one star. We ran down here on a Monday as it seemed to be the only place left open to grab a quick bottle. The lady that spoke with us at the front was giving a wine tasting to a man and never spoke to us until we approached the front desk. She offered us a Taste of something as we asked about the flavor. We then asked about another and she gave us a taste--again without us asking for the taste test. I mentioned wanting another bottle and we were hesitant on purchasing it so I asked for a taste. At that point, she stated "well I can't give you more because this man is paying for a tasting and you aren't". I thought that was quite rude whether she thought we couldn't afford it or what. We immediately asked how much it was and she said $15. We would have willingly paid $30 to both experience it but her approach was awful! She never asked if we wanted to do it or anything. We left a nice tip anyway because we did get the two "free" taste tests and her facial expression seemed like she was shocked. Bless you! If we go back, it would be simply because the wine we picked out tasted great but we will more than likely choose somewhere else. read more

So....My GF, a coworker and I wandered into this place on 12/5/15 after lunch, and an hour-plus drive from Castroville. We'd never been before, and I can tell you we will never go back. The woman who "helped" us with the samples was exceedingly rude and arrogant. She insisted we had to taste the wine in exact order - Dryer to sweeter - And you can't go backward. It was more of an order than a suggestion. Wow. Really? If she'd made it more of a suggestion in the context of a learning experience, we might have received it better. But...she was serious, and pretty sour in demeanor. Then we moved down the counter to do our tasting. Again, the Wine Nazi struck. My GF asked me if I wanted a taste of hers, which I did. I took a taste, and Frau Blücher admonished me: "Don't drink from others' glasses." Something about it screwing up my palette, which isn't that discerning anyway. Now, some more thoughts/observations: - We were first told that a taste of a wine consists of a small first sip to adjust our palettes, then another to evaluate the wine. We were never offered a second taste. - We were never offered crackers or water between tastes, or to rinse our glasses. Kind of ruined our hostess's credibility after all the other bull she was slinging. - Frau Blücher said three of the wines we tasted were "our best-selling" wines. Nice The overall experience was pretty crappy. Only one of the three people working the counter was pleasant. The other two (male & female) were pretty unpleasant human beings. I suppose I should've known better than to visit a "winery" that is housed in what looks like a former grocery store. In stark contrast to this place, the next place we visited (Chocolat), right next door, was filled with superbly pleasant young ladies behind the counter. Very small winery located next to Chocolat. Unlike the other wineries I visited, Fredericksburg Winery doesn't have a fancy setup with multiple bars. It is located in a strip mall and set up like a small store with the wine making machine in the back of the store. There is also not a charge to try four wines. The lady that assisted us also allowed us to try their Christmas Blend wine with cinnamon. She microwaved it giving it a unique taste. I think most of the ladies in my group purchased the Christmas blend and several other bottles of wine there. One of the ladies I was with came in specifically for the Gerwurztraminer which I thought was entirely too sweet. During our visit, we witnessed a customer get upset from one of the employees telling her she should not taste the crackers & jellies the winery had laying out before tasting wine as it would ruin her palate. They also strongly insist you try wine in order from dry to sweet. If you attempt to get out of order, they will quickly remind you. I feel the employees here are friendly and knowledgeable. I was in Fredericksburg for my best friends 30th birthday, and of course we went to some wineries. This was by far a disappointment and I do not recommend stopping here. We were a party of nine and we walked in excited to try/buy some wine. The man that helped us went over our options, and we decided to just buy a glass considering we were coming from another winery. He seemed upset at the fact that we were all just purchasing a glass instead of the tasting, and walked away. I had grabbed a sheet from the pile so I could decide what to get, when the lady told me in a very rude tone that I needed to put that sheet where I grabbed it from. I was so confused at the fact that she was bothered that I grabbed ONE sheet from the pile. Once I handed her my card to pay, she made a comment about my name. She asked, "Did your parents really name you that?" I was so shocked at her comment, I just responded with, "yesss." She then laughed and moved on to charging my other friends. We had a weird encounter with Jack as well, he was going on and on with someone from our party about a word he was not "pronouncing" correctly. Not to mention when I asked if I could get a key to the bathroom the lady said, "WAIT!" The wine overall is decent, but the customer service here is like nothing I have ever encountered at ANY winery. I am shocked that the staff thinks it is okay to be like that to paying customers.
