Brought car in for flat tire; manager failed to fully disclose all charges. Really feel like I was misled.

Bought 800 dollar set of tires. It took them 7 hours to put the tires on. After they got done with balancing alignment and installing the the tires. It came out to 1264. Over 150 for the alignment. 400 dollars to install 4 tires is over the top. Mavis has always been a rip off. Find another place to go. read more

I usually get my oil change at Mavis Yorktown. since my car is getting old I decided to take it to Toyota dealer for oil change just to find out that Mavis changed my oil pan drain plug and put universal plug that damaged the thread of the oil pan screw hole and now I have to buy a new oil pan, oil pan drain plug and engine oil. This Is not the first time they do stuff like that Avoid them at all costs. You may think you saving but at the end they cost you more money. read more

Hello! Like clockwork, every 3-4 years I forget that I can't trust Mavis and succumb to the convenience of the location. This time, I needed a simple NY state inspection and oil change. I thought, those things are so basic, what could possibly go wrong? ...Yeah. They failed my car on windshield wipers - ok, fine, how much to replace the wiper blades? $80. Wow, that's steep, given that I can get wiper blades for $12, but I thought, there are three wiper blades, 2 front, 1 rear, so $36 vs $80, that's more than a 2x markup. Yikes. Actually, no. They were going to charge me $80 PER WIPER BLADE. It was so crazy that I thought I misheard, so I asked again. $80... per wiper blade?? "That's just what they cost," they tried telling me to my face. It just boggles the mind - I mean, are *you* willing to pay $240 for three wiper blades? Oh, and the oil change - they charged me $85 for an oil change "after a $10 discount". Right, thanks for the discount. That's high, even for synthetic oil, but I would have just let it go except THAT PRICE DIDN'T INCLUDE THE FILTER OR LABOR. That's right, for a simple oil change, they charged me more than $100. Where have you ever gone where an oil change for a regular passenger car cost more than $100? Are they insane? Do they regularly deal with people who have so much money they don't care about dropping $400 on a NY inspection, wiper blades, and an oil change? Are you one of those people? I paid for my failed NY inspection and ridiculously overpriced oil change and went to a different shop. $36 total, for two wiper blades. That's $18 average per wiper. $18 versus $80 per wiper at Mavis. It's beyond price gouging. I don't even know what to call it. I should have it tatooed on my chest for when I forget again in a few years: NEVER, EVER GO TO MAVIS IN PLEASANTVILLE. I scheduled an appointment online for four new tires and picked the brand that I wanted that I know fits my car and put a down payment on to get my appointment. Once I get my car I see a completely different car brand (NIKA) that sucks, my car vibrates like a washing machine on them and when I called to ask why these tires were picked when I was specific on what I wanted they said that's what the computer put for my car. After telling them that I used THEIR website and input my car information for tires they have that would fit for my specific car and that the NIKA wasn't even an option for my car the guy just kept saying that's what the computer picked. I then asked why would they have customers pick their tires if they were going to do whatever they wanted. I said i will be there today and I expect four new tires of the brand I chose to be on and they said all I'll have to do is pay the difference. I will update after to see if it goes smoothly. Either way I will NEVER be returning to any mavis store again. Mavis sucks. Stopped in for a NYS inspection on a car with fewer than 20K miles. Was psyched to try them out because I have two cars and am in walking distance. Big fail as they tried to upsell me for two tires and failed my inspection on that basis. To make matters worse, they still charged me the $37.50. Picked up the car, went to a gas station up the street and passed inspection for $10. Lost me as a customer forever. Mavis sucks. One star because zero unavailable. read more

Always been thrilled with their work (oil changes, inspections, brakes, etc), and getting me new tires for reasonable prices when needed (so many options at different price points). It took 2 hours for an estimated 1 hour inspection, just for them to tell me I failed. Failing was not the issue, it happens. What the issue is the manager threatening to call the police on me when I told him I don't think it's right that I need to pay full price for a service that took double the estimated time. I was waiting in the waiting room the whole time .. and apparently the inspection was done in 30 min! But I was left waiting an extra 1 hour and a half because they were too "busy to call and have other things to do". Do not come here. read more

We try to support local businesses but this Mavis does not deserve the support. Poor workmanship and no integrity, lie to your face about an issue that they obviously created. They broke two wheel locks and say they didn't do it, an absurd denial, could have just apologized. Then all of a sudden the brakes mysteriously need to replaced. DO NOT put your car at risk thinking a $10.00 coupon at Mavis is a good idea. Had oil change and inspection scheduled today. Mavis had car all day so I called to check status and was told car was ready. Paid for both oil change and inspection. On the way home I noticed there was no new inspection sticker. I called Mavis back and was told it was an error. I drove the car back to Mavis and I waited for work to be done. Then Mavis told me that a check engine alarm came on. . My car is newer with 30,000 miles and never had check engine light on before. Mavis even blamed Hyundai ( on the last oil change)? Again. The Pleasantville Mavis is Horrible. I did go to Mercedes to get a new wheel. I asked them how much they charged to repair a cracked rim. It turns out to be 40% less than Mavis and 30% less than what I paid after the "discount" I got from Mavis for losing my wheel and wasting a whole week. Guess where I will go next? read more

Be careful. The "printer is broken" is a common excuse the employees use to pocket fees. They'll tell you they did an alignment but Mavis cannot produce a receipt -- the "printer is broken". If you press hard, they'll say "oh sorry, we didn't do the alignment". It happened to me and three people I know in town!! It's convenient but go in Eyes Wide Open. read more

Ahhh a chain of tire stores...who cares, right? Well I needed help and good customer service and they provided it. Car in need - 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Six weeks ago I was broke but my tires were bald. Snow was a coming and it was going to be dangerous. So I stopped by to see if they could help. What we did since I could only afford two tires was to use my full size spare which was like a new tire and we were able to change three of four of the tires. Gave me the traction I needed to get through until my inspection which was due end of Feb.They also advised me (and I knew) that I would need new rotors and pads for the brakes. So, today I bring the car in for the brakes and the two additional tires. The manager test drove the car before giving it back and knew something wasn't right. He tried a couple of things but nothing worked. He called Toyota and they needed to see the car. He had someone drive me home, and then drive my car to Toyota, Turned out there was a problem with the battery and the computer wasn't reading things right. Toyota wanted to replace the battery but, of course dealers charge double. The manager Adam wasn't having it,so he had someone bring a less expensive battery up there. Toyota installed the battery, scanned and reset the computer. All was now good. He got the car back, and had someone pick me up from home so I could get my car just n time to pick up my son from school. My nerves were frazzled thinking about what all this extra service was going to cost me. Then he handed me the bill. The answer? Zero. Nada. Brakes and tires were done at exact dollar estimate. Battery at reasonable cost. Bottom line is it would have been easy for them to pad the bill but they didn't. You think I'll go there again? Of course. You should too! read more

I took my car for a NY state inspection. They said the brakes needs to be replaced because they are %90 worn along with the wipers. They refused to the the inspection because of the said issues. They gave me a $350 quote. I took my car to the dealer, and the dealer verified that I have more than %50 left in my brakes and everything is fine with the car. I only paid $37 for NYS inspection. After only 13 months and 9,000 miles since having Mavis Discount Tire in Pleasantville, NY replace my front and rear brake pads and rotors on my Hyundai Sonata, I was experiencing noise again in the rear brakes. They said I needed new rear brake pads and rotors again. I asked how could that be as I got nearly 50,000 miles on the original Hyundai set and they had no answer. They said the brake pad parts would be free since my previous replacement came with a lifetime warranty but I would have to pay for labor and the parts & labor for the rotors because they were 1 month out of the 12-month warranty. They quoted me a high price and I showed them a Mavis coupon that would make the parts and labor for both the brake pads and rotors cheaper. However, they said they could not honor even part of the $50 coupon because they were giving me the brake pads for free under warranty. They said only if I had never had the work done before could they honor the coupon and give me the lower price! Not only are their marketing practices deceptive but they use substandard parts that should have lasted a lot longer. I'm done with Mavis forever. read more

Mavis Pleasantville is awesome. All the people there are not only knowledgable, but friendly as well. One of my tires had a problem. They quickly diagnosed the issue and recommended several alternatives for a new tire and they helped me pick the one I purchased. I also asked them to check a few other things on my car which they did at no additional charge. We've been going to Mavis Pleasantville for years and will continue going there when we need tires or any of the other services they offer. They are very impressive. read more

Went to get two new tires. The counter guy said I need to do alignment of the new wheels. I thought it was same as balance the wheels. I did not agree to do a wheel alignment. I just did an alignment a year ago !! Since I live 5 minutes away, told them to call me. NEVER CALL until 5:30 (they close at 6pm). I had to call them. When i got there, they said wheel alignment was done for additional $79.99. Worst of all, they were running a promotion ($10 off) and they charged full price. They are CROOKS. Brought two cars in to have 4 tires mounted and balanced for $172. When done, the left rear of one car vibrated so severely I had to pull off the road. Took it back, they re-balanced the wheels again. Another test drive - exact same problem. Ryan, the manager (very nice), offered to do it a third time but refused responsibility for the vibration, insinuating it may have been like that before I brought it in. Right. The other car had considerable steering wheel vibration over 50 mph. Got it balanced properly elsewhere, and he said all wheels were unbalanced due to TOO MANY WEIGHTS. Right front had 13, with one stuck on top of another! (See pics). These are Porsche rims, not old cheap rims. Still have to take first car to other mechanic. This is a tire store, mounting & balancing is tire store 101. FAIL. read more

Be careful dealing with this business. Was quoted price on phone which failed to include tax, an extra $70. Though stated was getting 4 tires was pressed hard to get alignment, stated at counter that this was almost necessity, not previously stated on phone. This would have brought the original $799 price to the $900 range. Called at noon and told to come for a 2:30 appointment but on arriving at 2:30 told men at lunch and I could get my car at 5pm like I had a spare ride outside and nothing else to do with my day. We've used them so many times throughout the twenty years we lived here. Theyre super convenient - you don't need an appointment and generally you are done in an hour or two. That said, there are a few times I've felt like they weren't on the up and up....and I have had others in the neighborhood voice the same concerns. This week we had no choice bc of timing issues. They put new brake pads on a car that just had front brake pads installed in January and tried to get rotors too. And then our inspection was suspect. Add to that they kept telling us an hour and it took 8 total. overall an awful experience. If I could give 0 stars I would. I brought my Mercedes-Benz in yesterday for a tire change and to get my brakes replaced. Upon picking up my car and returning home, I immediately found a dent and scuff above my driver side rear wheel. When brought back to show the manager the following day, at his request, my husband and I were treated with disrespect. The manager looked at the dent and claimed that couldn't be done in the workshop and that he couldn't tell from the surveillance footage, as my car is white. He then continued to suggest that a rock did this on my way home and even implied it was something I might not have noticed before. While talking to us, he even began to use inappropriate language. He continued to laugh at us and began to walk away. For the amount of money I paid for the services, my car should not be returned to me like this and I should not be treated with such disrespect from one of their employees. read more

Why replace one bad tire when you can pay for and replace two?! I had a slow leak in a tire and took it in to get replaced. I was about to leave when I realized that no one had asked which tire to replace. I told them which one and they wrote it down. 6 hours later, the car was done. The end? No, not quite. Fast forward three weeks and the same tire is exhibiting the EXACT same symptoms. So I take it in again and they replace it again. When I raise the possibility that they may have mistakenly replaced the wrong tire, the one guy gets immediately defensive, and I'm the a$shole for even raising the question. Clearly they rotated it last time and I just picked up a new screw. I wasn't even trying to get a free tire but just thought they should acknowledge and maybe share some of the cost or pay for the labor. Nope! I'm an idiot and got to buy the whole thing while the manager storms off in a hissy fit (I will say that Joseph is super nice though). Unfortunately, last time I come here. read more

My husband and son have taught me well about cars so I know what's what with car stuff. Guess what? This is the worst mechanic shop I've ever been to. I went there to get my brakes done. I told them I needed it done by 6 pm. They told me it was not problem. Of course it wasn't ready by 6 pm. When I came to pick it up at 6 pm they told me it wasn't ready and I would have to bring it back tomorrow. I said no problem. On my way to work the car starts smoking. I couldn't make it to work that day because of this. They also told me I needed new wiper blades. I said throw them on. A few weeks later, my driver's side wiper blade flew off during a rain storm on the sprain Brook parkway. These idiots almost got me killed. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL POSSIBLE COSTS. read more

The Good: they sold us tires (purchased online, installed at the Pleasantville Mavis) that were priced comparably to Tire Rack. Able to get them on the car the next day and save the cost of patching a tire that needed to be replaced anyway. The Bad: As many of these chains seem to, they inspected the car to find other things they could fix. They specifically recommended replacing the rear brake pads and rotors. The way they delivered this recommendation in a very high-pressure sales-y way. The brakes didn't have that many miles on them. I took the car back to the dealership and had the brakes checked and the dealer reported that they were okay. So Mavis was trying to sell me a completely unnecessary service. read more
