Fred's been around for a while and once they were flooded pretty bad a couple years back their prices arose. fair enough but then the quality of the food dropped and it has not changed back to good quality food. There are better places to go with better prices and higher quality food. which sucks to type because Freds has been a staple in the community for many years. Pork ribs came wrapped in plastic, no seasoning or sauce- you have to put it on yourself. This results in the meat having nothing but a Smokey flavor. Most BBQ establishments will season before cooking and add the sauce towards the end of smoking to enhance flavor. They give you sauce but it is insanely watery and lacks a good flavor. Regardless, the ribs were insanely tough too. Nice service but would not return. read more

Pretty good burgers and fries. The atmosphere is very southern and cool. I like the Georgia bulldog decorations and other sports related decor. The service was alright, with fast service and nice staff. The wait was about 5-10 minutes. I got the Texas Chili Cheese Burger. It had onions, cheese beef patty, and chili. The fries was like any ordinary fries but they were very crispy and tasty. They don't have fountain coke and other soda so I had to get canned coke. It was ok though. First thing, they close at 5. That should have told me to pass on them. I ordered a whole rack of ribs, smoke wings, pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were tough had good smoke favor but the toughest ribs I've ever eaten. Chicken wings, were ok, not great just ok. Pork sandwich, no flavor. Ate here as part of a senior group. First thing you notice is you have to stand in line to order. No menus or pictures of anything. plastic silverware styrofoam Togo boxes and cups. Cost was high, well over 40 bucks! The food was terrible. Fries cold and old and limp, beans ok, but the pork was like you put pulled pork in a blinder and grinded it to a pulp. 2 pieces of white bread kind of soggy but buttered. No comfortable booths just cheap hard metal and plastic chairs. My wife returned her burger it was not edible. She asked how they cooked it, they said in a air fryer. I've eaten at Sonnys, Smokey bones, Williamson Brothers, the Hickory house and they are all a much better value than this place. I had a taste for some good BBQ ribs. I passed by this restaurant and figured I would stop and give these guys a try. I was totally disappointed! I ordered a light slab of ribs (little less than a half slab). One of my best indicators of a good BBQ restaurant to me is, if can can get a whif of the smoke as soon as I walk in and the smoke smells sweet and savory then I am good to go! I did not smell much smoke, so I figured the restaurant may have had there air vents opened wide. The ribs I received smelled like soot! The pit probably needed to be cleaned out and re-seasoned. The ribs were tough and bland! The worst tasting ribs I have ever had! I was not expecting BBQ ribs to taste as bad as they did coming from this establishment! The only menu item that tasted ok, was the brunswick stew and sweet tea! Everything else sucked including the baked beans! The baked beans came straight out of a Van-Camps can! First I'd like to say that the customer service was great. The older gentleman was very kind... But the food was terrible. We had burgers, slaw, and turkey ribs. The burger was a frozen patty with zero seasoning. The chili tasted like it was canned chili with zero flavor added. The bbq sauce was watery and lacked flavor as did the turkey rib. Even the lemonade was nasty. It tasted like lemony water... zero sweetness. My fiance took one bite of the slaw and didn't finish.. so I refused to even taste it. Please, get fresh beef for burgers. Please add ground beef to the chili and maybe even some beans... and PLEASE add sugar to the lemonade!!! Season the turkey ribs and throw a little salt on the fries. The remodeled building is nice. I've always loved to dine in and out of this restaurant until today ! My order was missing items rang up wrong causing a 32.00 luncheon for two customer. The young lady whom rang us up was new and was incorrect on the cash register ( which the older gentlemen came over and corrected the one basket ) instead of two with a additional two all the way slaw dogs! I order a large sweet tea and a Pepsi in the can when ask for a cup to place my Pepsi in was an additional .65 which he didn't charge us for it but when I got the sweet tea it needed a table spoon or two of sugar..This restraunt let two customers walk out without any resolution to the problem NO SUGAR !! I should've read the reviews before I came. I asked the gentleman at the front desk because I had a conference call if they had Wi-Fi. After ordering my food, I sat down and asked the ladies at the front after I had ordered my food for the Wi-Fi and some lady came up and said it's locked. To me that just tells me they're not really big on customer service and if they have a Wi-Fi, why in the heck aren't they letting Customer use it? It's designed for them. Plus after getting my chicken salad, the chicken was extremely dry and the lettuce was wilted. Not a good experience never will come back. I would suggest going somewhere else. read more

I've eaten here at Fred's several times now and I'm here to say that it's a consistent experience. Consistently mediocre. I wish more people would eat here.. that way they can afford to spend some money on a microwave or something. I don't think I've ever been served anything hot. They do have pretty good pork rinds, so if you find yourself there be sure to grab a bag of pork rinds to go or for an appetizer. read more

One of my pet peeves is when the cashier just looks at you without greeting you. I got this here from what looked like could have been the owner. I gave him a warm hello even though he didn't greet me but his response to me was only a question of whether I wanted to eat there or take it out. I can sometimes understand this at a chain fast food place but not from a independent restaurant that's been around for years that appears to be family run. I got the pork plate which includes the stew, slaw and Texas toast. The stew was pretty good, Cole slaw good, pork nothing special-kind of dry and bland. Ordered the rib plate. Apparently, they use a microwave to heat up the ribs after smoking. One side of the ribs were hotter than they should be, the other side ice cold. Sloppy work. The ribs had more bone than actual meat. Maybe they trim them for their Brunswick stew? I was expecting a rich, dark, smoky bark on the ribs. These look like they were pre boiled before the little bit of smoky flavor was added. I took them back to the counter because this isn't at all what I was expected as "smoked ribs". The lady said we don't give refunds after something's been sold. In addition to that, the Mac and cheese was more like a cheese soup. I'm from Memphis and I consider myself to know a few things about barbecue. The barbecue sandwich at Fred's is excellent. There is plenty of meat on the Texas size order. It's not over or under seasoned like I've had at other places in Atlanta. It's juicy and not dry either. It really is perfect!! You will have to add sauce if you like a lot of sauce like I do. There are several sauce choices. I've tried them all and they are all good. They give you slaw and pickle which I love too. The fries are rarely fresh and they skimp on the fries... :/ The ribs (which is my favorite food) are nothing to long for. They are a little tough by my standard and they give you the bigger ribs instead of baby backs. The rib sauce that comes on them is "Just OK". I have not tried the burgers or hotdogs yet. I'm about to call in an order for a sandwich though. read more

I went to this place twice! First time, I went with my nieces and nephew because they saw a review about it somewhere. The food was good, but the people and the place are what made this place special. I ordered. A yellow jacket with the works as recommended. My relatives had stew and a variety of other things. It was good! But somehow it didn't. Give me a FoodGasmic. That is until I tried their Pig Wings! Dawgumbit, it was great!! This place is great! Friendly service and nice people. I had the beef sandwich with fries and slaw, and my son had the texas burger. I tried 3 of their sauces on my sandwich, original, smoky, and mustard. My favorite was the mustard sauce, but the smoky and original were good. Excellent prices. Most plates are around $10. Good place for a family dinner or a quick lunch. I also like the variety of the menu. I'll be going back to try some of their other dishes soon! The only con is I would have liked a little more of that delicious beef on my sandwich, but I think they offer a larger beef sandwich than the one I ordered. read more

My fav go to bbq spot. Staff are always friendly and you can sometimes catch the owner behind the counter handing over your food with a smile. This is important since CS sucks everywhere. I always order large pulled pork and 8 oz beans. They used to have the best fried cherry pie (think McDonald's before they changed) until they changed pie vendors (too much dough and not enf deep fried) overall the sandwich isn't drenched in sauce (you can add more if want) and the food is good. I was getting a windshield replaced and had about 90 minutes to kill. So, I walked over for lunch. I was a little surprised that no workers were wearing masks. I ordered and the dining room is small and most tables were taken and the two or three that were open in main aisles where people would be constantly passing by. So, there was another dining room where the door was open and so I went in and someone was cleaning a table and I ate my lunch there. I was there for a total of 35 minutes. A lady kept peaking in and sometimes would ask if I was finished or need any trash taken. Then a gentleman who I later figured out was the owner "Fred" came in with another couple and set down. He later got up and left abs then came back and close the door and said for me to open it and let myself out when I left. I said ok. In the meantime, the lady came in and cleared my table as I had just finished eating. Then about 5 minutes later the owner came over to me again as asked "would it inconvenience me to leave the room so they could talk". I was shocked but, said yes and I got up and left. Then I realized I didn't have my mask and I saw the door was now closed and said "employees only" on it. I went to the counter and waited and said I must have left my mask in my haste to leave the room at the owners request. He went and checked and it wasn't there. I said well, the lady must have thrown it away in the trash (it was a homemade quilted mask) when she cleared the table. They checked the garbage and it was there in the trash. The food was average at best and clearly if you're not in the click, you're a burden to be a customer eating in their dining room and asked to leave the room so they can have private discussions. I am amazed at the nerve to ask me that and then to throw away my mask as well. The whole thing was rude and uncomfortable. I would understand if the room was closed initially but, it was not. I haven't been Yelping in a while thanks to WHYDFML syndrome. For those of you who don't know what that means - it's something my female buddies came up with based on Janet Jackson's What Have You Done For Me Lately circa 1986. And no, we're not goal digging garden tools - it was that one stanza: You used to take me dancing almost every night - danced until I thought I'd lose my breath. Now it seems your dancing feet are always on my couch. Good thing I cook or else we'd starve to death! That had us cracking up and shaking our heads in agreement. The SO never wants to leave the house anymore - his mantra has officially become "But babe - nothing we're gonna get if we go out will be even half as good as what you can whip up right here." Side-eye. Lol. But today all that changed - because I took myself out. Lol. And I'm sad to report, I was underwhelmed. So now that I've wasted dozens of words on the set-up, let me wrap up the actual review: I walked in - and like the other reviewer said - I was looked at - by the owner, no less - as though I was an exotic animal in the zoo. This guy was actually standing at a table talking to what appeared to be regulars and he stopped mid-sentence to gape at me. But yet he couldn't be bothered with mustering up a greeting or a smile. (I knew it was the owner because I'd perused the Yelp photos before venturing in.) Now normally - this would merit me turning my beautiful, black self around and taking my hard earned dollars elsewhere but 1) I'd put on actual clothes and driven quite a bit to get there and 2) they are closest place near me that sells turkey ribs and I've been dying to try those d@mn thing since I discovered they were an actual thing! The cashiers were super friendly so that pretty much cancelled out the owner's rudeness. The food was another story. I sampled the Brunswick stew beforehand - and it was good. Apparently the "82 year old owner gets up every day and personally makes it from scratch." So I wound up paying $10.40 for a turkey rib 'plate' with fries, Brunswick stew and texas toast. The fries were cold, so after trying one, I abandoned them. The tiny wafer-thin"Texas toast" went untouched & unwrapped. And the stew, though tasty was a teeny tiny Barbie-dolled size portion. Another reviewer referred to the container as shot-glass sized. And she's right. I had no idea they even made Styrofoam containers this small. I'm honestly thinking these cups are actually meant for condiments because they are truthfully the size of those clear containers your normally get ketchup or honey mustard in. But even the forks and spoons are tiny - so maybe just use some supplier that specializes in Lilliputian customers. The verdict on the turkey ribs - what I'd driven there expressly to try: Meh. There was no discernible smoky flavor whatsoever. And there were only 2 of them. And they were leaning towards the dry side. I can see how these would have been delicious if they were fresh and properly prepared. So: negative starts for bad service, negative stars for ridiculously small portions (seriously - see photo), but 1 star for friendly cashier and 1 star for good Brunswick stew. This could have easily been a 1 star review but I'm feeling generous. I left there still hungry - stopped by Popeye's and picked up side of red beans and rice to tide me over until dinner. read more

Not much meat inclosed in a soggish white bread sandwich bun. The meat was smokey, the sauce tasteful, but nothing stood out that said "EAT ME!". Cole Slaw. Served in a shot glass sized styrafoam cup. Very crunchy little pieces, Not sweet, not spicey, not especially memorable. Brunswick Stew. I again "upgraded" from the plate of fries to a shot glass sized styrafoam cup for 40 cents. Again dissapointed on the size/upgrade cost metrics. The stew was the highlight of the meal. It has nice umami, texture and balanced seasonings. Water. Why do I mention water? Well...Apparently they chage 55 cents for tap water at Fred's. Either that or it was the lemon that cost 55 cents. Either way...hello!...If wanted to pay for a drink I would have ordered tea or carbonated corn syrup. Meh. I've experienced better. Check out the Contreju Jamaican place down the street. read more

About seven years ago, I had the good fortune to be introduced to Fred's BBQ House through a coworker who was determined to prove to me, in one fell swoop, that sweet tea really was a worthwhile beverage. (I had previously made several disparaging remarks about this liquid refreshment prompting the challenge.) Willing to embark on this endeavour, I accompanied her to this quaint establishment. The first impression that I had was one of nostalgia. I FELT the presence of an old time diner/restaurant -from the counter where the overtly courteous and enthusiastic staff took my order; to the patronage, of all walks of life, waiting for their food and eating in the rustic layout of the dining area. This prelude to my introduction of the South's famous sweet tea left me in rapt anticipation. I was not disappointed. Not knowing what to order, I was advised to try their "Yellow Jacket" chili dog (I am a chili dog fanatic.), onion rings, and of course a large sweet tea. The signature Yellow Jacket was fantastic. The chili (sans beans) held the perfect amount of sharp notes to contrast and highlight the flavor of the dog. The mustard cut through on each bite to add harmony and the melody was completed with a topping of sweet (I believe they were sweet.) onions. They served this delight on a unusual bun as well. Both sides of the bun were removed, and the bun was grilled to provide a crisp outer texture. I'm not much one for onion rings, but theirs are pretty darn good. They are of the big, handmade variety that is hard to find, especially of this quality. So you are saying to yourself..."Enough already! Tell us. What happened with the tea? Are you a convert? Will you buy stock in Lipton or Snapple?" Crushed ice. Those are the first two words to come to mind. Believe it or not, the first thing I noticed was the temperature of this enchanting thirst quencher. It was cold with each pull upon the straw from the first sip to the last drop. I don't know what it is about the type of ice they use there, but it really does make a difference. Then, the tea...How do I describe it? Simple and clean with a beautiful finish. I was always put off by overly pungent tea, or tea that was sickeningly sweet. This was neither. Simply put, I was astounded. It was truly crafted by a sweet tea master. I am now a tea convert. I actually buy tea by the gallon from BBQ House from time to time. Just don't tell anyone that I'll drink it "Day Old." If you want to try one of the best sweet teas in Atlanta come to BBQ House on Thornton Road. It is located on the west side of Atlanta outside the loop past Six Flags. (Great for a stop after a day at the park!) You will love the staff. You can call ahead to pickup at the drive-in window. read more
