What impressed me most was the way they handled the situation and the respect they showed me as a customer. They reimbursed me for the value of a similar pair of pants, but more importantly, they demonstrated true craftsmanship, integrity, and accountability. That meant far more to me than the money. I have been here a few times for dry cleaning and alterations. The place is extremely small and very very not in the summer time. If they are renters they need to tell the owners to do something about the A/C. Is bad I have visited a few times for dry cleaning and alterations. Every time I walk out I think to myself... my a little more expensive that I would have hoped for. I've taken in my husbands dry cleaning (shirts) and have left with a large bill. Well, I have been going to Fred's ever since I moved to Alamo. But, it appears that Fred is a hot head. I dropped in with a pair of pants that needed a button re-sown back on. I stated to the lady at the counter that this was the case, and that I would return a few hours later to pick them up. She gave me an odd look, and I almost asked her if there was a problem. She never said anything more and I went on my way. Upon returning to retrieve my pants, Fred promptly came out from behind the counter with a mad scowl on his face. He abruptly held the pants up, looked at me, and said "we usually charge $1 to sewn on buttons". I looked at him and said "OK?". I took the pants and started to walk out. I almost stopped and was going to call him an asshole, but I could tell that the guy would have gone postal on me if I did call him out. I would have gladly paid the measly $1 if he would have asked for payment. These folks automatically assumed that I wanted the button sewn on for free. Big mistake on their part. So after five years of giving Fred my business, which averaged about $200 per order I went across the street to the dry cleaners next to Ace Hardware. And what a breath of fresh air the lady who runs that store is! Friendly, polite, and accomodating. And her prices edge out Fred's, which is a plus. Too bad Fred had to act like such a jack ass, as it was very convienent to go to his store. One more block to travel won't kill me, and I feel that I had no choice but to stop giving Fred my money based on his lack of customer service skills. read more

I have been a regular customer of Fred's since early 2020. I wanted to support them through the pandemic, and up until today, I have been pleased with their service. We picked up my husband's long sleeve oxford shirt last week, and while nicely pressed, we noticed what appeared to be a burn hole on the sleeve. It looked like it was done with a cigarette. I returned the shirt this morning to question the burn, and was told Flatly that it could Not have been done at the Cleaner. I asked why there was no card to indicate there was a flaw on the shirt originally and was told, that is only done with stains. Really? The owner continued to argue that it could not have happened during drycleaning. He was willing to refund the $2.99 cleaning cost. This is a Ralph Lauren shirt! An apology and $20. credit would have saved a good customer. Instead I was made to feel like we burned the shirt, and I should just 'suck it up'. I picked up the clothes I was leaving for dryclean and will Never set foot in there again. That is no way to run a business. read more

I just went into Fred's with a huge dilemma, a dirty suit and a wedding at 3 today. I went in thinking I was going to have to break the bank IF it was even possible to get same day service on a Saturday. But Fred came through, and the price was very reasonable (way less than I thought it would be). I tried to give him an extra tip for helping me out but he refused and said "fair is fair." I use Fred's weekly! Have done so for at least 8 years. All the staff, especially Scott, are beyond friendly and efficient. I have given them expensive high end clothing with no fear that anything will be damaged. Scott goes out of his way to do excellent quality work and my clothing is always ready the day scheduled and many times before. The 1 star rating is an outlier. I haven't used a dry cleaner in years, but the top of my orange pants somehow got dragged through a parking lot while on a hanger and ended up with a bunch of nasty grease stains. Nothing I did would get them out without the color coming out too. I took the pants to Fred's and they did everything they could to remove the stains but couldn't get them out either without also removing the color. They did get the stains to be much lighter, however and I'll be able to wear the pants. I know they spent a lot of time on them and were very careful so I was fully prepared to pay the $10 cost. The owner said NO CHARGE and refused to let me give him ANYTHING because he couldn't get the stains out completely. I highly recommend this business. read more

I had just bought a pair of pink twill pants. I wore them on a nice day to Starbucks where someone spilled coffee and it got all over my pants. When I got home, I soaked them in cold water. No luck. So I took them to Fred's with diminishing hope they could get the coffee out. I am happy to report that every bit of that coffee is gone....the fabric didn't suffer, the color didn't fade, no shrinkage. The pants looked like they did when I bought them. I have been coming to Fred's Cleaners for close to 5 years and the quality of the dry cleaning has been adequate, but not great. I realize Fred's has been a long time cleaners in Alamo, but I think time has taken its toll. I recently took a linen blouse in to be dry cleaned, and when returned it literally had a cut/gash in the material which could have only been made by a pair of scissors. I tried to repair the gash, knowing Fred's attitude is all about his all mighty bottom line, but then I got to thinking about it, I should give him the benefit of the doubt. It just wasn't right that I came home with a damaged blouse that had been worn only 3 times and worried Fred would not believe me. Returning to speak with him, I'm thinking the damage had been done by a disgruntled employee. Whether true or not, he should have smiled and said he' take care of it, or at least offered free cleaning to make up for the replacement costs. I got neither. With literally a dry cleaner around every corner, Fred could still have a polite and steady customer, or he could cut off his nose to spite his face and lose the revenue.
