Went to Freds on a recommendation (to go only) and it was pretty good. Portions were average. Went on Carne Asada night where they knock off $3 if you order from carne asada menu items. I didnt but a friend did and he ate it all! I had the fajitas which did not come on a traditional sizzling platter but on a plate covered in melted cheese. It all tasted good but one of the best parts of fajitas is the opening smell of piping hot meat, onions and peppers with smoke trailing the server on the way to the table. Oh well. Enchiladas that someone had were also very good. they were plates balance with beans and rice covered in sauce. One rub I had was they were tight on the chips and salsa. One basket per four people and then they were charged. I get it if we were a bunch of surfers coming in and ordering one burrito and a coke. But we dropped hundreds and were a large party of 8. The server should be able to read the room and not be so chintzy on a freebie that costs pennies. One last thing is that don't sit in a booth to watch the sunset as you will sizzle like the fajitas that never did. you are in an enclosed area and will bake with the sun shining in hitting you on the back or your table mate across from you right in the eyes. we were relieved when the sun finally set. read more

Pretty consistent. Reasonably priced Mexican food (for Maui) that's on par with any other chain. Nice cold beer, very competitive happy hour deals. Always friendly service. Fairly quick. Nice place with some TVs and Mexican music playing but you can still chat with your friends. read more

1/26/26 I was on Maui visiting a friend and was meeting another friend for my Birthday lunch so I followed her lead and went her recommendation. What a great location! A cantina style place with outside dining right across from the beach! You can't lose with a spot like this. Location! Location! Location! The service was stellar! Our server was on top of it! When I got the Chips and Salsa the Salsa was very flavorless. I asked for something spicier and was told it would be an extra charge.....disappointing! The Cadillac Margarita was more like a Yugo Margarita.....not impressive at all! I tasted no Grand Marnier whatsoever! Fred's Mexican Cafe is a local dive bar in Kihei that serves greasy spoon diner food with a Mexican twist. Think huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos, but because this is Hawaii also expect to see spam fried rice, loco moco and Portuguese's sausage. The ambiance of this diner/bar is one of a joke in the wall college bar by the beach where it wouldn't surprise you that they have dollar shots and the champagne of beers on special, but because it's located right across the street from the Pacific Ocean, also expect a laid back beach shack vibe. The service here is friendly albeit a little informal, but they get the job done and that's the bottomline. They do have a large bar section in back where you can watch games, but be advised that this is an open air type of location so it tends to get a little claustrophobic. A great dive and a great time. Good menu, friendly service and stiff drinks. I had the shrimp taco plate and the chips and queso. I ordered a spicy marg and when the bartender asked how it was I was honest - not very spicy. Turns out it was a spicy vodka not an infusion so he grabbed a hot pepper from the kitchen, smashed it up and made the next one a little better for me. I am back home and missing Fred's - the views are beautiful, it's a fun place with nice outdoor and open air seating, and the service was very friendly and efficient. Great drinks, also! Most of all I am missing the chips & queso + ground beef appetizer that I got as my main course. It was SO GOOD and a great portion to just have as your own meal when very hungry. I didn't get a picture because I demolished it immediately. There was a generous portion of meat, and a perfect ratio with the queso, and enough chips to enjoy it all. Super friendly bartender, they were just closing up when I walked in and they let me have a beer while I ordered to go grilled chicken burrito and fish tacos. Probably the best food I had in Maui. Fred's is our go to place for breakfast and evening snack. Their loco moco and fried rice smothered in gravy is delicious. They serve Maui coffee and the service is always good. If you can get an outside table for two on the patio, the ocean view is spectacular. If you are lucky you can see whales or watch a sunset or both. I was craving a taco on a Tuesday and this place seemed to check all the boxes. I really wanted to like this place, but there are definitely opportunities to improve. Since I was dining solo I opted to sit at the bar. The people around were very friendly but it was very difficult to get the server, Diego's attention. I placed my order, margarita, one kulla pork and one pescado taco plus chips and salsa. Had to ask twice for the chips and salsa and once the food came out, had to try multiple times to flag him down for silverware and napkins. Such a fun place. Easy to find on S Kihei rd. Quite a bit of parking next to the building. Their breakfasts are SO good the macadamia pancakes with coconut syrup are SO good. This worked out well. After a morning of Snorkeling with friends we came for lunch. The wet burrito is the way to go.
