My friends and I were nearby at the beach and wanted a casual lunch so we tried Fred's. Overall, not a bad meal. Service was a bit slow and we asked for a copy of the receipt and the server forgot to get it. I had the Chile verde burrito: Hawaiian style smoked pork, refried beans instead of the normal black beans, creamy tomatillo aioli and cheese. Topped with chile verde and cheese. This was a huge portion. I have half of it the next day. Good flavor, lots of pork inside. One friend had the Mexicali salad and another had fish tacos. They both liked their meals. Fred's absolutely nailed it. From the second we walked in, the staff was super welcoming and accommodating--they even went out of their way to seat us in a spot that felt like outdoor dining even though the patio was full. Total Maui vibes with that indoor/outdoor mix. I have a dairy allergy, and they were awesome about it--so helpful and made sure everything was safe for me without making it a big deal. I had the fish tacos and... wow. Perfectly cooked, fresh, flavorful. And the habanero salsa? Life-changing. Rick won't stop talking about the calamari taco, and my jalapeño margarita hit all the right notes--spicy, tangy, and so refreshing. And okay, I saved one of my fish tacos for later, didn't end up eating it until three days after, and it was still delicious. That says a lot. As we walked around Kihei, we wanted to find a place to eat out. Fred's Mexican Cafe caught our attention because it has a lovely open terrace and we could see people enjoying the food and view from up there. Curious, we wanted to give the place a try. We didn't wait for long. We got a seat outside and the view was lovely. I mean, we get to eat food with a beachside view and enjoy the sunset. They have a kid's menu and we ordered a burger slider with fries. We got nachos for an appetizer. Tropical Lemonades(one strawberry and one mango) for drinks, and a veggie quesadilla and a kalua pork burrito. We didn't have to wait that noticeably long and all of our food came in by a very nice worker. The tropical lemonades are super fresh and the food was delicious. This place has a nice view, good timing, fresh food, and nice staff. I had a pretty good experience with this place and could not find a thing to complain about! We usually go to Fred's our first morning on the island. Today was no different. They opened late (9:00 am) due to a variety of issues, so there was a line of folks waiting--maybe 15 tables worth. We all came in at once at 9:00 am to cheerful, energetic staff who were both short staffed and with their automated order system down. The water and coffee came quick. Orders took a little bit longer. Amazingly within 30 to 40 minutes everybody had been served, were eating well prepared and tasty breakfast treats, and had full cups and glasses. It was fun watching them all work smoothly as a team with the kitchen cranking out accurate, hot, excellent food. Kudos to Fred's! read more

I'm from the heart of Texas and have had my share of Tex-Mex as well as traveled all over California and Mexico to experience just about every type of Mexican food out there...as honest as I could be....my whole group was surprised at how good this was, not just because it was in Hawaii....or maybe so but come on...good Mexican food with a Hawaiian twist here and there....it works at this joint! The Kalua Pork burrito....i had it twice while there for 10 days! The salsa is great, rancharo sauce was great....the staff were fantastic and the place has a great vibe! We will be back! Tried this restaurant a couple times. Not too good if you have access to good Mexican food. The salsa is pretty bad. The margaritas were marginal and didn't seem to have much alcohol in them at all. The server said fish tacos were mahi but they had the texture of tilapia. Service was generally good but the price was high. I would avoid this place. read more

I had been in town vacationing , I was taking a daily walk for the past week and the food smells were attracting me daily. Finally Saturday I caved in and had to explore breakfast, breakfast was everything you want in a good breakfast, I had the Mexicali skillet, my wife had the Corn Beef Hash and we split the Hawaiian French toast. All of the food was delicious and we washed it down with Baily's and coffee . Fred's is an excellent choice, great ocean view and they have cool T-shirts which we also bought. Fred's does not disappoint! Their burritos and margaritas had me feeling like I was on vacation in Mexico, it was that good. You have to try the burritos. I'm talking burrito heaven in a foil wrap, people. This was no joke, it was like the size of my head! But wow, the flavors. It had all the classics like rice, beans, cheese, and chicken but everything just melded together so perfectly. The tortilla was crispy on the outside but still had some give, like the perfect vessel for all that incredible filling. You could tell the cooks took their time layering each ingredient to create burrito bliss. Of course, no Mexican meal is complete without some top-notch margaritas. The mixologists at Fred's have it down to an art. Whether you like 'em frozen or on the rocks, these drinks went down so smoothly it was scary. The perfect balance of tart lime and just enough tequila kick to keep you happy. The bartenders must have some type of secret method cuz I've never had margaritas this good before. On top of the food and drinks being out of this world, the atmosphere at Fred's was just as great. Bright colors and decor everywhere, upbeat tunes playing, and super friendly staff gave off genuine Mexican vibes. You could tell this place was more than just about the eating, it was an experience. Service was also top-notch. The servers were as friendly as can be but also right on top of anything you needed. Felt like I was at a little fiesta with how engaged they were. Anyways, if you're looking for tasty Mexican, Fred's is the spot. The burritos and margaritas had me wishing I could stay all night! This is the message I sent directly to Fred's through their Facebook page. I have not gotten a response other than an auto-reply. "I'm writing so that hopefully other customers don't have the same experience we did. I did call on Thursday and talked to, I believe Penny, who apologized and did reimburse for one of our meals. I want to provide additional details. We visited your restaurant on Wednesday. We told our son and friends we had been there a couple years ago and how awesome it was. This time, my wife and I shared fajitas. My son got fish tacos with shrimp. Katie had a shrimp quesadilla. Luke had tacos carnitas. When our fajitas came out my wife tried a bite and said the shrimp was cold. I felt it and it was cold to the touch. Since shrimp is often eaten cold I didn't think too much about that and I ate one. The server overheard us and immediately took the plate and said she would have them remake it. I overheard her tell the kitchen staff to remake it. It was no more than two minutes and the plate was back out. I can't imagine they remade it that fast. I'm afraid they threw it back on the grill and reserved it. I don't know that for sure. Immediately, on the walk back to our room my wife and son got sick. Katie and I have since gotten sick. All four of us that had the shrimp got sick. The only person that didn't get sick was Luke. I realize sometimes shrimp is served cold; however, the fact it was supposed to be hot but instead was cold suggests it was not handled properly. Additionally, Katie told us the next day that while we were at the restaurant she could see the bin where the chips are stored. She saw a server clear a chip basket from a customer's table and dump the remainder back in the bin. Penny, if I got her name right, did reimburse for the fajitas, which I do appreciate; however, it's bigger than that. I love this island so much and crave coming back and experiencing all I can. But we've lost most of the time with our friends and son (they could only stay a week). My son slept for 40 hours. We spend thousands of dollars to come here, and it's wasted just to cut corners on food safety in the name of speed. My hope is for a complete overhaul of the process, proper training and supervision, and complete transparency with food preparation." Home of the famous one pound burrito! The interior decoration of this restaurant reminds me of squid roe in Cabo in a good way, colorful and abundant fun decorations! The burritos are massive and great to split for lunch. They bring out chips and salsa (tip* make sure and ask to try some of the different salsa's) The breakfast is also good, very standard cafe breakfast. Which seems to be hard to find in Maui. Make sure and sit on the outer deck and enjoy the ocean views, the food generally comes out quick but the restaurant is flowing in island time and style! read more

Parking is cramped, at best. Try to arrive early for dinner to get a spot, or park on the street. Happy hour and taco Tuesday are the best meal deals, but all food is good Mexican. The Kalua pork meals are our favorites. Patio ocean views are good if you arrive by 4 pm, iffy after that. Service is just okay; they seem to be understaffed when busiest. We spend a few weeks to a month in Kihei every year, and Fred's is now one of our favorites. 4 visits in 4 weeks, service is vastly improved after our first visit. read more

Hubby and I were visiting Maui and decided to go to Wailea for some shopping and drove from Lahaina through Kehei. We wanted something to eat and saw Fred's which has a nice view of the ocean. We arrived during breakfast time. I'm not a huge fan of breakfast food, but being a good sport, I decided to make the best of it. We approached the hostess stand and we were seated outside immediately. The views are great! Our server was a nice young lady. We placed our orders and proceeded to wait awhile. I didn't really mind that as it was a lovely day, in Hawaii, with a great view. Why get upset? We did finally receive our orders and it was decent tasting, but my corned beef hash, fried rice and English muffin were literally stone cold. It would have been much better had it been hot. My husband's breakfast was again just "okay". Nothing terrible, but nothing to knock your socks off. They are getting by on their location only in my opinion. read more

Freds has been our go to for breakfast every year we have visited Maui. The food is amazing, and usually, our bartenders are amazing. This year,2026, was an exception. We always sit at the bar for breakfast and have a bloody mary and order food. The loco moco was sooooo good, and the bloody marys were tasty, from our bartender Kia. This was the first time we met Kia the bartender. We had breakfast 3 times at the bar the first week, with our newly acquainted bartender Kia. We tipped well, 50 percent, with each visit. We feel like 50 percent is a great tip for good service. Fast forward to the last day on Maui... wifey and I head to Freds for breakfast... opening time 8am. The doors open, we are happy that we are gonna be having some good food and drinks with Kia... the bartender that is on. We walk to the bar and Kia sees us.. she gets this angry ugly look on her face and yells at the manager and another employee..."Why did you let these people in? We dont want these people here!!!!". My wife and I are totally confused. They asked us to leave the restaurant because the power went out the night before and they didnt know when they would be ready to open. With the anger and screaming, we were just shocked. Why so much hate? We thought we found a place where the people were kind and not so judgemental or hateful towards visitors. After getting over the restaurant prices since we've been here 2019. Never asked us for our QR code, they are considered as outdoor seating. Mask are mandatory while walking in and moving around the restaurant. At the table you are allowed to remove your mask while drinking and eating. We do not eat out as much since coupons are no longer offered. We ordered a Basic Breakfast $14.00 with water, Loco Moco with fried rice$16.00 with a Bloody Mary $8.00. Just a note: they removed my favourite banana muffin from the menu!! The staff was very friendly and food was served in a timely manor. Wasn't busy with plenty tables available even with the tables placed for social distance. Understand these are hard time for all restaurants would never reduce star due to pricing. Great location which is located across Kamaole Beach II on S. Kihei Road. That is just about the only positive thing about this establishment. Nachos looked good and was build great, but like the rest of my order, it lacked in flavor. My shrimp diablo was Their specialty, it was not special. I couldn't finish the meal. Not because of my appetite for I am a big person. The rice lacked any flavor that keeps with their Mexican theme. Black beans? Really? My son couldn't finish his meat burrito and he gave it to me to take home. I had pick through it and throw away about 25% of the unappealing parts. Our wait help stopped us mid meal to close us off for he had a "family emergency" and had to pickup his sister's kids.
