When it comes to any business that sells and/or serves alcohol, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compares to a British and/or Irish pub. St Stephen's Green is an Irish pub that is a Mountain View mainstay and institution. It's been here for a long time, and it's a great place to drink a pint, munch on some food and shoot the breeze with friends. We decided to haul ass down here for the USA vs. Belgium World Cup match. Presently, for World Cup reservations, they have to be made at least 12 hours in advance and are $50/person (which you can redeem for drinks and food on the day of your reservation). We got here fairly early and sat in some free seats near the front entrance. Before long, the place was a zoo, but it didn't matter. The atmosphere and camaraderie were still electric. Despite the atrocity of a loss by team USA, great fun was still had. Their menu, I should note, is extensive with a number of both Irish and non-Irish food and drinks. On my visit, I started with a simple club soda which progressed to a glass of Guinness beer and some Guinness beer cheese pretzels which I split with my friends. The pretzels and the accompanying sauce were delicious. The club soda and Guinness were as good as can be had anywhere. Prices, admittedly, are not the cheapest here though. For two club sodas, two Guinness beers, and one order of the beer cheese pretzels, the total bill (without tip) came to approx. $47-48. Service was good but could have been a little bit more organized. When I was closing my tab, my server ran off just as I began to sign my receipt, and I was unable to get a copy for myself. Not a huge deal I suppose as the pub was awash with patrons on the inside and outside. But I will say this: When I made a few phone calls a day or two before to ask a few questions about reservations and seating, each person I spoke to on the phone was really friendly and answered my questions clearly and with no hesitation or confusion. Some might think that such an experience like that isn't too remarkable, but, in a day and age of picking up the phone and talking to a computer and/or having to deal with poor customer service, this was a breath of fresh air. For those who plan to come for the remaining World Cup matches, if you do NOT have a reservation, be sure to walk around and see if there are any available tables (both inside and outside) that do NOT have a sign saying "reserved." If you're lucky to find one, you can sit there. If the table is indeed reserved, you can't sit there unless the amount of chairs at that table is greater than the amount of people for whom the table is reserved (which is noted on tables that are reserved.) There are a number of free seats up front that are first come, first served (which is where we sat), but they do NOT allow you to save seats for others. So I highly recommend that, if you plan to meet up with others, you arrive TOGETHER and EARLY. They recommended that we arrive at least one hour before the match started, which is great advice and served us well. We got fleeced. They charged us $64 for 21 wings. When I asked the waitress if that was really the price for wings, she said, "I guess." Absolutely outrageous pricing; the worst part is, they originally served us 14 wings instead of the 21 we ordered, and still had the gall to charge us $64 for them. The drink service was also incredibly slow. We waited 15-20 minutes for our first round of two beers. The wings themselves were also subpar; other local places or even Wingstop are miles better. I remarked on wanting to try their Irish pub entrees sometime, but that won't be happening after this visit. Our waitress did comp us two drinks for the service. Haven't been to SSG since I used to work downtown but saw that Molly's next door was tapping Pliny the Younger so after having that, I I had to go back to get their chicken curry fries. One of my favorite pubs on the Peninsula and definitely a place on my list when I am in Mt. View. I remember going their regularly in the 90s. Besides the big LCD TVs, it remains the same. It still feels like a place where locals go. After trying to walk off fried calamari, burgers and beers, me and a buddy decided to have another beer at SSG. Nice. I hadn't been there in a little while and it was a reminder to keep it fresh in the memory bank. We got to catch up for a while and talk about days gone by. Popped into St. Stephens for a quick pint of Guinness and was happy with it. Proper glass, proper pour, and a nice creamy refreshing pint. There is lots of seating outside in the street since the main road is closed to cars. Inside, there is a big bar with plenty of tables throughout the space and lots of TVs, making it an easy spot to watch a game. The vibe inside felt a little quiet when we were there. A few people were on laptops and there was not much conversation, so it felt more mellow than lively. Service was great. Kind, quick, and easy. This really should be a higher rating for the food, but because of serious service issues I have to knock this down a notch. A group of six of us came here on the day of the German Christmas market. We originally intended to pick up some Wurst or Schnitzel at the market, but the lines were really long and we thought we could get a quicker meal in a more comfortable environment by walking down Castro a bit. We came across this place, and while it wasn't the Teutonic fare that we had planned to eat the menu seemed interesting. Though Castro was quite crowded with people, there was ample seating when we arrived shortly after 1pm. We had our choice of tables and scrounged up a couple menus. There are certainly a lot of Irish and British choices with a few outliers (e.g. fish tacos and a quinoa bowl), and we made our selections carefully, then waited for someone to come take our order. And that was a problem. There was only a single server working the entire dining room, and she had to clear tables, take orders, and deliver food and drinks to the customers. After a good long while (over 15 minutes after sitting down), I approached the server to let her know that we were ready to place our order. She was very sweet and apologized, but it still took a while for her to make it to our table. We placed our order and she disappeared into the dining area, which was starting to fill up quite quickly. We chatted and watched some of the games on the many televisions as we waited for our food to arrive. But that was another very long wait. In the end, it was well over an hour from when we entered to our meals to land on our table. But the food was very good. I got the Guinness steak pie which had a nice flaky top crust and was filled with large tender chunks of steak and served with a side of fresh steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. The gravy was rich and flavorful with a hint of malt from the beer. I had the opportunity to try the jumbo Irish breakfast roll, which was also quite good. We shared a side of lemon almond Brussels sprouts which was crispy and flavorful, but I missed the opportunity to sample the Scotch eggs that looked fantastic and received glowing reviews from my companions. The fish tacos got a bit of a meh reception from the person who ordered it. By the time we left, we had spent over two hours at the restaurant. It was a good opportunity to catch up, but we were quite famished when we arrived (especially the two people who had run a 15k race earlier in the day) and we would have preferred faster service. But this was certainly not the fault of the lone server on the floor. Despite the crowd, she kept her composure and was always smiling. We gave her a hefty tip for her hard work. I put the blame on the restaurant manager for not having more staff both in the front and back of the house. Would I come back again? Probably, if I know in advance that I have the time to spend here. After all, I still need to try those Scotch eggs. read more

The questions were engaging, the energy in the room was lively, and it made for a great group activity. If you're into bar trivia, it's definitely a solid spot for that. When our group first arrived, we hadn't ordered immediately since we were still getting settled, and we were told pretty bluntly that we needed to order or leave. I completely understand that it's a business and especially on a busy trivia night they need tables turning and drinks flowing--but the way it was communicated felt impatient and a bit rude. We had discovered this place during the Mountain View Taste event and loved the shepherd's pie and the cozy vibe, so my friend planned a surprise birthday dinner for me here. Sadly, the nice ambiance pretty much ended at the entrance. The shepherd's pie was still incredible--honestly, one of the best I've ever had. But the curry chicken wasn't our thing at all. It was way too sweet for our taste. Maybe that's how it's meant to be, considering it's an Irish pub, but still, it didn't work for us. To be fair, they let us change the dish without charging extra, which we appreciated. The portions were big and hot, so food-wise we were fine. But the AC in our section wasn't on. It was there, just not running. We had to ask for it to be turned on, which felt unnecessary in the middle of summer--it was hot and stuffy until then. Service was pretty slow. Our server was nice, but he spent way too much time chatting at the bar. One of our beers sat there for 10 minutes while he talked, and my friend ended up grabbing it herself. And the biggest disappointment? The surprise cake. We were just stepping outside for a breath of fresh air and were planning to come right back. But the server ran after us and said, "Wait! I'm bringing the birthday cake!" So... that was the surprise. Ruined. And yep, I was the birthday girl. It's at the north end of Castro St. with standard city lots or parking structures nearby. The interior had the dim, cozy pub feeling similar to my experiences in the UK. Since I was a single I sat at the bar and ordered the Fish & Chips and an Oakland stout from the Super Happy Hour menu. The beer was about a half pint and very smooth and tasty. My food was brought to me by one of the kitchen staff. The filet was huge on a generous bed of fries. The thicker part my fish was extra crispy and when it got cold was hard as a rock. The fish itself appears to be frozen, some parts were flaky and some parts mushy. The Happy Hour was an okay value but I would try something else a next time. Definitely would not get the Fish & Chips again. read more

I literally crave their fish and chips once every month and it never disappoints plus out of this world bread pudding is a god send ,you can't go wrong. I go here a fair bit - only because the bar staff are great - they make up a bit for the management, quality, and overall attitude at the place though. Recently, I went there to watch the Champions league final. Arrived during the half time around 10am and they were charging $20 cash or $25 for card. A bit steep, but I didn't push on it. I asked if I could check if there is space inside first and they rudely refused - again not a big deal. Getting their high from acting like they are night club bouncers. I paid the cover and then sat outside. It wasn't very busy but took forever to order - wait staff just hanging out watching the game rather than serving. But where it went overboard - after 5 minutes of paying the cover, they removed the cover charge stand and people came and sat for free ordering nothing even for the whole game. Blocking views, drinking water. At the end of the game and settling my bill, I mentioned the issues to the manager. Their response: We charge an extra $5 for credit card, because of the fees -- that is a straight lie. He wants to claim credit card companies charge a 25% surcharges? I joked about it and then mentioned the cover charge going away, and they said 'we always remove the cover after half time'. I suggested that maybe to be friendly to customers, mention that if they just wait a couple minutes, the cover will go away. Their response: 'why would we do that if we can make money. Too bad for you'. The management have always been crusty at this place, but this was beyond what I would have expected at all. A normal person would say something like 'yeah that kinda sucks, can I get you a beer? or fries'. Or even just acknowledge it. but that last answer basically summarizes the attitude of the management and thinking on service. 'too bad for you'. I mentioned that I enjoy wine and described the types I usually like, and Sosa offered me two tastings that fit my preferences perfectly -- and he was absolutely right. What really stands out is that I don't even go there often, yet he remembers me every time -- including my wine preferences. I have been by this pub so many times in the so many years since moving down to the South Bay in the early 80's. It was the first time here and only because of an networking event. Great event. Now to the food. They have super happy hour and regular happy hour. I chose the later. The Fried Chicken Sandwich. Good but unfortunately not fried enough. Too much French fries as usual. I have been in teh bay area for a long time. My friends and I love coming here for a beer or two, music and sometimes some fried chicken tenders. in the past I had nothing but great experience until last week. I came with a couple of friends as usual, sat down, and Giovanni took our order, it was trivia night, I believe so they were expecting a lot of people. I gave my table to a larger group and moved to smaller one. People came after us ordered food, got their food, drink ect. We waited and waited nothing. Oh we did get our drinks which one of them was very BAD, tasted like water/lemon juice. So I decided to check on our food, asked one of the waiter who had me speaking to the manager. I wish I can recall her name but she was very mean, rude, and not professional at all. She called Giovanni who came to our table with a nasty attitute trying to justifying the delay in out order. I had explained to him it was not right that everyone who came after us already had their food including chicken tenders. The manager was also with him and had shown us an order number with the time stamp of our order stating that some items will take longer vs others but I happend to ordered chicken tenter which was orderd by others. Giovanni responed in very mean/nasty tone " Well, what do you want from me? I don't want to argue" my response was " What? are you serious, all we wanted was the our food ontime or not be the last person served". He continued on by saying"well, it will come soon but if you want I just cancel it but I am not goingto be arguing with you". I can go on with their responses from both the manager and him so you can understand how inpolite and unprofessional they both were. I even had to walked to the bar to pay my bill because he never came back to take my card. Of course I know the bartender who by the way recognized me and has always been very nice and easy going. He tried to apologize and asked if there is anything he can do, so I asked him for the another manager's name as I really think this is not acceptable. However, the lady( manager that day) refused disclose anything. Again, I think them two should not be working with people as they don't have people skills. I live Stephen and this was teh first time having such a bad and unpleasenat beahvior. We have come to this bar several times to eat outside, primarily during happy hour. One problem we've encountered is that during the colder months, they had very few heaters, and we often left because it was so chilly outside. But that aside, and skipping the worst Bloody Mary I've ever had (actually returned it), this is a fun place for a casual meal in good weather! Food-wise, they have an eclectic menu - smoked salmon on Irish soda bread (delicious), the largest fried fish I've ever seen and chicken curry that was good, not great. I'm giving it 5 stars just for the show I saw there. My son took me for the Mother's Day Brunch. It was spectacular and the most fun I've had in a Drag Show.
