Brunch at Fred's was a treat. The mandatory prix fixe came with blueberry muffins served with strawberry butter, hot coffee refilled promptly, and a choice of alcoholic drinks or juices. The bloody mary was excellent--a perfect balance of tart, spicy, and sweet. For entree, I had the tasty scrambled eggs with a generous amount of cheddar, tomato, and mushroom, accompanied by a potato cake and salad dressed in vinaigrette. It was a good size without being obscene. They also had a number of omelette choices and thick cinnamon raison french toast for those with more of an appetite. Service was friendly. read more

Fred's is the perfect marriage of three of my favorite things of all time: the UWS, dog, and brunch. I take each in turn: 1) UWS. the location, my neighborhoor du jour, makes this an obvious Sunday brunch choice. Outdoor seating along Amsterdam allows plenty of people watching. It also means that Fred's is dog-friendly...which takes me to my second point.... 2) Dogs. I have one, and happen to be a bit of a "dog person". Fred's takes dog obsession to new heights, as nearly every inch of the interior walls are covered with dog photos submitted by patrons past and present. My Bailey has yet to make it onto the wall at Fred's, but one day I'll eventually submit a photo. In the meantime, she can join me for dining al fresco at Fred's. Amazing! Oh, and speaking of dining... 3) Brunch. Unfortunately Fred's falls a little flat here. Don't get me wrong, its a solid menu and the omelettes are particularly tasty and creative. For $14.95 prix fixe on Sundays (Saturday is a la carte), the entree + one drink deal isn't bad. Try the asparagus+brie, spinach+goat cheese+mushroom, or artichoke+sun dried tomato+gruyere omelette with a bloody mary. The mini muffins with strawberry butter are cute, if forgettable. Not the best brunch--not in the city and not in the UWS. In sum: Fred's does a solid brunch, but without a "wow" factor. Convenience and good-dog vibes are good enough to keep me coming back. I never had the honor of meeting Fred personally, but I imagine he was certainly one cool pooch. And I suppose that now he's in Doggie Heaven looking down on all the brunchers at Amsterdam and 83rd. You immediately feel right at home and that feeling doesn't leave until you leave Fred's. Amazing and friendly staff. Fantastic food. Great happy hour drink and food specials. The buffalo chicken mac n cheese is like having a thousand magical elves massage your belly and tell you how awesome you are. I'm going to guesstimate that I've walked by Fred's about 256,092 times and never thought to go in. Never looked at the menu, never even gave it a second glance. That was until everyone and their mother were on the UWS trying to have brunch. Every place i went with my aunt was jam packed but after a quick search on Yelp through the Blackberry app, into Fred's I go. It was a beautiful and warm Sunday afternoon in the early Fall, my aunt and I were talking about the usual things: her daughter (first year of college!), my mom (she's the bee's knees!), my cat (he's the fanciest alley cat to ever exist). Sitting outside the conversation flowed easily and smoothly. When she spoke I enjoyed the strawberry butter, when I spoke she took the last chocolate chip muffin. She's shady like that. The $14.95 prix fixe made it easy for me to say "it's on me Tia," without having to skip a few meals during the week. The service was good, a little slow but it was Sunday and we weren't in a rush. The burger was good and came w/ fries and a salad, so I was able to stuff my face and then justify it with the fact that there was something green on my plate. I heart Fred's. I haven't been to Fred's for brunch which seems to be where perhaps they could do with some improvement. However, the meals I have had there have been worth writing home about. When I first moved to my new apartment I was hungry and my fridge was empty. I hopped onto Seamless Web and chose a turkey burger from Fred's. When it arrived in an oh-so-timely fashion I devoured the meal and thought it was the best thing I had eaten in my entire life. A week or so later, I thought hmm was that turkey burger REALLY as good as I remember or was I just so hungry that day that the ass of a dead rhinoceros would have been every bit as pleasing? Again I hopped onto Seamless Web and with 15 minutes a second turkey burger was in my possession. I was happy to find that it was equally as delicious as the first had been. It probably wasn't until I'd been in my apartment 6 weeks that I finally managed to make the long 3-block trek to Fred's and eat there in person. The photos of all the dogs covering the walls was enough to make me a patron for life! All you need to do is bring a framed photo of your dog and they take care of the rest. My friend ordered the mac and cheese which was a large bubbling bowl of creamy goodness. I, being a creature of habit, ordered another turkey burger which was perfection as always. Fred's is the type of place you can go to and feel like you're eating by the fire in a cozy log cabin that happens to be your best friend's log cabin. It's so homey and the wait staff are attentive but not overbearing. We had our check for a good 15 minutes before paying and no one approached us trying to hurry up the process. I can easily picture myself popping into Fred's on a cold winter's night sipping a hot toddy and watching the passers by shuffle about past the windows. Is it wrong to think so highly of a place when all you ever order is the same thing all the time? Fred's is a restaurant that I've always ordered from for many years so I guess if they do one thing well then that's good enough for me. Fred's Mac and Cheese is really something else. It's only on the dinner menu. Usually I find it odd when restaurants have mac and cheese as an entree rather than a side. Fred's is one of the few places where it actually works as an entree. They give you an option of adding bacon, ham, chicken, mushrooms, or peas. I always order it with both bacon and ham. Easily one of the best mac and cheese in the city. The overrated mac and cheese place, S'Mac, can't even touch it. On occasion I've sampled some of the other dishes they serve up here and they were decent as well. Of course I have to mention the labrador retriever theme they use throughout the place. I'm told you can bring in a framed picture to hang up if you own a lab. Went for brunch on Sunday 4/6/14. We were impressed with out quickly they moved people in and out both inside and outside. Wait was short even with as busy as they were for 11:30 AM. brunch on a Sunday. They started us off with coffee, mimosas, tom Collins, and a basket of muffins. I was confused to find that with 4 of us at the table, they only brought a small basket of 3 mini-muffins. Considering they have it listed as part of the brunch prix fixe menu, I expected we would get a few more. Or at least 1 per person! Alcoholic drinks were tasty and coffee was good. A runner brought out our entrees and also cleared the table, he took the muffin basket (makes sense), as well as our water glasses (huh?). It took us a long time to flag someone down for water. Once he brought glasses and water, he managed to overflow the glasses and spill it all over the floor around us (safety anyone?). All 4 of us ordered from the prix fixe menu ($17 pp). We all thought our meals to be tasty. My fiance ordered pancakes and was quite disappointed to find that there were only 2 pancakes. 2 pancakes for brunch? Maybe for a side of pancakes, but that's it? Just 2 pancakes? My meal was far heartier with a large omelet stuffed with cheese and veggies, salad and eggs. Our friends seemed pleased with eggs Benedict and quiche. I would certainly go back, but was disappointed that an almost $100 meal left us with too few muffins, too few pancakes, and a very wet floor. read more

Yet another seriously underrated Upper West Side restaurant. Mac and Cheese perfection in so many variations. Crunchy baked breadcrumbs on top. Thick, cheesy sauce without a hint of oily or watery separation. Generous portions for half the price of a meal just about anywhere else in the neighborhood. Why this place isn't on everyone's top 10 Mac & Cheese lists is beyond my comprehension. If Mac & Cheese isn't your thing, then try the burgers, or the chili, or the nachos, or the pastas... all heart cloggingly delicious. Even the salads sound good, but I wouldn't know first hand with all these other tasty options before me. Because I was grabbing brunch with a dog I was babysitting, I needed to sit outside, and Fred's has ample outdoor seating which drew me to the restaurant. Combined with their $18 prix fixe breakfast special, I was sold on Fred's for Sunday brunch. Though I was initially excited for my brunch at Fred's, the experience quickly went downhill for me. First the hostess sat my friend and me at a table directly in the sunlight on a scorching summer day when there were several shaded tables that she proceeded to give to customers after us. When we asked for a shaded table, she told us that our table was the best she could do. From there, we temporarily had a reprieve from our experience when our incredible waiter Chris came over to drop off our complimentary muffins and take our drink orders (the prix fixe menu comes with tea/coffee and juice/mimosa/bloody mary). Chris was extremely accommodating and quite possibly the best part of our dining experience. My friend ordered the bloody mary and I ordered the orange juice, both of which were sub-par (my friend commented that her bloody mary was too pepper-y and barely touched it). From there we ordered our meals: two omelettes and a side of bacon for the dog. What should have taken 10 minutes TOPS ended up taking 20 minutes to arrive. While people around us were being served -- people who arrived after us, no less -- we sat in the scorching heat waiting for our omelettes, with empty water glasses that weren't being refilled. When the omelettes finally did arrive, we noticed that no one had ever given us silverware. What a joke. When we finally got the silverware and could eat, the omelettes were average -- the eggs were a bit overcooked and the insides slid out of the omelette as if they had been thrown in at the last second. This place has a charm to it and has maintained it through out the years. The placed is named after the owners dog, and they have dog pictures lining up the walls. The owners are dog lovers you see. It is on the basement floor, and you walk down stairs to enter it, and as soon as you walk in you feel like its home. Aside from the decor and the homey feel, the service and food are great and reasonably priced. The butternut squash is ridiculously good, and great during the winter. Great brunch place on the uws, especially in the warm weather where you can outside and people watch. There can be a wait of approx 20 to 25 min to sit outside -however they have a nice bar you can wait at inside. We came to Fred's on Sundays after finding a hour and a half wait at nearby other restaurants and having had it recommended before. The French Toast is probably one of the best I've ever had and deserves trying if you're a fan of the dish at all. It was so, so good. We also had an omelette which was massive and pretty good. Service was OK on keeping on top of everything, ambiance was quiet but energetic so really nice for Sunday brunch. Food came out reasonably quickly. This is a cute spot to do brunch with the family. They have pretty good food and lots of cute dogs on the wall. It's a little different than your typical boozy brunch in the city and a lot more family oriented. Kind of like a mix between classy and grungy, they have great sangria but also serve cans of Miller Lite. It's really nothing fancy at all- just a feel good, homey, comfortable environment; delicious food, generous portions and very friendly staff. I've been here twice, once for brunch and once for a low-key drink at the bar. The bartender was hilarious and very nice when we were there for the drink. Prices were reasonable. We sat inside for brunch just because we didn't feel like waiting for outdoor seating to open up. We were seated immediately and our waitress was really quick and friendly. My only complaint is that it was a little loud in the back room and I had to ask "what?" several times before understanding what my date was saying. Blueberry muffins were delicious, although they would've been even more amazing warm. I had the huevos rancheros, which were also delicious and a lot of food (refried beans, rice, eggs, tortilla, ham). My mimosa tasted a little like it was made with cheap champagne though, so I don't really recommend that. My date had only good things to say about his goat cheese and spinach omelet, and we both liked the hash brown casserole thing that came with it. Solid UWS brunching location. Fred's is rockin. I went there with 2 girlfriends for some nice girl time and good, inexpensive food. We stumbled upon Freds after trying an overpacked bar and grill across the street. Loved it! The atmosphere was so charming, and the pictures of puppies all over can make any dog lovers heart melt! Didn't get a chance to try the drinks (wine selection was fine however), the butternut squash soup was a bit thick but that is just my taste. I had Fred's apple salad which was YUMMMMY!! Spinach, apple, pecans, goat cheese, grilled chicken and really great vinagrette and I was in heaven. The burgers looked amazing from afar, but I was on a "diet" that night. I was on a date night with my husband and we decided to go here randomly. The place could use a little remodeling. The waitress was really nice and attentive considering it was a Saturday night. He ordered a Perfect Harlem drink, which he loved and said was amazing. I didn't know what to get so, I asked for a margarita which was not on the menu. The bartender made a margarita that was kind of tart and lacked liquor. The waitress was such a doll, she brought me a ROCKING MCMOCKINGBiRD. It was a major step up from the last drink, this one was on point. She recommended the Chili con carne and the Salmon burger, since I wanted something with fish. Both dishes were amazing. I had the salmon and on the first bite, it was an orgasmic experience that I called food heaven. We also ordered fried calamari. The dipping sauce to the calamari was exceptional. It was meaty and the crust was just enough. I wanted to leave a review because i usually turn to these for advice, and I eat out often so I am always looking for a spot with amazing food. Sat outside at Fred's last night. It was a nice dinner. food was cheap. After reading these reviews I want to check out the brunch. We had crab cakes for appetizer which was really good. Nice side salad and sauce with them. I had the chicken salad which is pretty standard fare, nothing special, but decent enough. 3 star dish. My chick had lobster ravioli which was really good. The sauce was awesome too. My favorite thing about this place is the ambiance: you kind of feel like you're in a log cabin and dining with a group of friends. However, my Spanish omelet's ingredients were a little uneven (e.g., the corn was only on one side), and our waitress was a little abrupt with us. (I know, Saturday brunches are busy.) Fred's has a lot of good things going for it. The outside seating is nice, the inside has a really friendly vibe (including the staff), and they make a really good burger. As a neighborhood bar, I like it a lot. Great vibe at the bar. Kind of place you can just sit at the bar and spend the night striking conversations w/ fellow drinkers and the bartenders. Good beer on taps (Blue Point, Brooklyn Lager). They also have homemade sangria but I don't recommend it. Free cheddar and pretzel Goldfish. If you drink at the bar, they'll usually take care of you with either a free round or a free shot. The dinner food is above average if a bit pricy. Best value and dish I've had there is the burger - about 8 oz. and comes w/ fries and a side salad for less than $10. The grilled chicken sandwich (~$9) and tuna nicoise salad (~$15) are solid. The macaroni and cheese is good but its sharp parmesan taste wears out its welcome after a while so it's better to share than eat as a whole entree. Really good butternut squash and gazpacho soups. I've done brunch here a couple times and, while it's a nice experience, the food is just good. I've had the cinnamon raisin french toast and it was kind of dry - probably could've used some fruit with it. The yogurt parfait w/ granola and fruit is just okay too - i like viand cafe's and hi-life's better. The muffins they provide w/ all brunch orders are very good. I agree with Jennifer S. I've never been impressed with Fred's. I've had a couple of meals there that were only memorable because of things i didn't like. I want to like Fred's, but I just don't like their food enough. It's just too average and sometimes disappointing. When I was here for brunch, the eggs on my eggs benedict were overcooked. One of the best things about eggs benedict is the mix of gooey yolk with savory hollandaise sauce. Well, that can't happen if my yolk is hard boiled now, can it? I also don't like what they have on their menu in general. It's a pretty bland and uninspiring menu in terms of both quality and flavor. However, I love dogs and I think it's great that they have photos of people's dogs all around the restaurant. I could go to Fred's to drink, but I would go somewhere else for dinner. read more

What a fabulously divey bar/restaurant on the UWS. Stopped by with a friend who recommended their sangria so in we went on a Sunday afternoon. Inside its intimate and dark and oh my god...photos of puppies all on the inside of the place ::insert squeal here::. Loved looking at all the pooch pics while drinking some really good sangria. If you like the sweet, fruity sangria that comes from a jug named Carlo Rossi/Arbor Mist, then do not come here. Average food (at times, even below average), average service (honestly, I have consistantly found the busboys there to be far more courteous than any of the servers), and a nondescript atmosphere (no, the cute little doggies on the walls do nothing to redeem this place). Every time we've walked out of there we asked ourselves "why did we go back there again?". The half-off restaurant.com coupon usually prods me to do so on nights that we want to eat out (ie: every night of the week) and don't want to splurge. Honestly, though, after four visits to this dive (I'm a patient, forgiving soul, what can I say?) I have finally realized that I deserve better. So I've finally crossed Fred's off my list for good. Coupon or no coupon, I've grown tired of sitting in a dinky dive all night flailing for some nasty waitresses' attention, only to be served mediocre pub fare, and walking out regretting it time and again. I am a fan of their Prix Fixe Brunch on Sunday. Includes mimosa or bloody mary or juice, coffee and any brunch menu item. I think that the price went up to 16.95? Not sure. Staff is friendly, and its a fun, super casual neighborhood place with great omelets, and of course their smoked salmon and cream cheese scramble is awesome! Also great place to come for a late night drink. Gotta love a bar that has pretzel goldfish. We've been ordering grilled salmon for delivery for a couple years and it's been really good. The last three times have been bad. Every restaurant can have an off day but three times isn't an off day. It's changed on the menu but that shouldn't make the salmon tasteless with an undesirable texture. It used to come with a sweet relish-like sauce that was really good. Now it's served with a runny tasteless sauce that looks like French dressing. And the risotto that comes with it--well never mind. Long ago their Mac and cheese was great, not any more. I hope this restaurant doesn't go down hill. It's a neighborhood treasure. read more

I got food poisoning here yesterday. Ordered mozz sticks (ate only one, they were cold but that's no fault of the restaurant) a regular burger, and a slice of lemon tart. Immediately put the dessert in the fridge as soon as it got here. doesn't really feel like e.coli poisoning, as I've had that before and it's much worse. Anyone at Fred's who reads this, please clean the kitchen. I missed my mothers' day brunch for this :( read more
