Had to check this place out. It was a ton of fun and a great place for a wide range of people, singles, couples, families. Definitely brought back a lot of great memories from my childhood with over 60 arcade games like Joust, Frogger, Centipede, Spy Hunter, Ms. Pacman, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. Mortal Kombat and they even had Mike Tyson's Punchout and much much more. They play 80's music, serve craft beer and wine, as well as some bar food. Great potential with a few hiccups Children of the 80's and 90's understand and appreciate video games in a way that the current generation just can't. We didn't have huge flat-screens and augmented reality; it was game cabinets, visible pixels, the token machine and junk food at the counter. The culture was great then and still is now. Went Sunday evening for my birthday - needed to relive some childhood geekiness - and had a crew of 14. Free Play is a lot like what Flynn's from the Tron movies would be if he were into craft beer! Descriptions above are all correct. The playlist is solid 80's & early 90's, the vibe is geek heyday, the menu upscale on the cheap. There are some spots to improve with the place but overall it's pretty slick. Here are the deets: Experience: - Some have reported lines to get in. We never had any. - Seating is quite limited (with strange policies) so be ready for that. - Food and beverages were served quickly. Good flavor. - Some have reported game-hogging and bad attitudes. We never had any. - Your wristband gets you in/out privileges all day to hit any local alternative food - there's a Baskin Robbins a few doors down. Pros: - Very large game variety, both decades well-represented - Pinball machines in the back - Good food selection and quality. Sandwiches, little plates, good stuff. - Plenty of LOCAL BEERS available (whoever does the ordering knows what they are doing) and the prices are far cheaper than expected - 10 buck entry charge is reasonable - Merch Cons: - Some machines need TLC (bad pinball bumper, bad joystick sensor) - having some to swap out would be good - Machines packed tight - not much elbow room - Machine volume - they are WAY quiet! The awesome playlist needs those beeps and boops to go along with it! - Server problems - female bartender was great but bearded male server made us put back the extra table we pulled together to sit the group due to it being "unfair" and needing it for a "dinner rush". That table sat unused the rest of the night while 14 crowded around room for only 8. Suggestions: - Leaderboards for the main games, perhaps some tournament action too - More pinball - improve the seating options - benches, stools at the bar, something. I'd return. This is what the nerd community here in DFW needed, not just the nerds but everyone over 30 who grew up hanging out at Putt Putt and playing games for hours! If you are a child of the 80's and grew up in arcades, this is the place for you! For a $10 cover you can play all the classics...Pacman, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Defender. After my first time I requested Spy Hunter and when i went back it was there. I also requested the arcade version of Punch Out which they have not added yet unfortunately. They have Mike Tyson's Punch Out but that isn't the same to me. First time I went was on a weekend afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. Second time was on a Saturday night and it was pretty crowded. When it is crowded like this it is hard to get on the more popular games like Galaga. I read one of the other reviews and i did not witness any cougars. Free Play Arcade is a playground for adults. You pay $10 at the door and get to play all the arcade games. Sometimes it gets really crowded and you'll have to wait for the game you want to play to open up, but most people are respectful and good at taking turns. The bad... They only have 5 pinball machines. If they had 10 then I would come more often since I love pinball machines. I've been twice. Both times with kids ages 7-11, and during the day. Boys have really dug it. We stayed about 2 hours each time, which was enough. Plenty of games. Not too crowded. Sodas are a bit pricey ($2.50 for a bottle) and I wish they had a few less pricey options, but there is free ice water and cups. Super clean, plenty of seating. Really good! We will go back. I seriously expected soggy fries and greasy mozzarella sticks but we ordered delicious grilled panini type sandwiches with quality ingredients. This spot was recommended by a family member during a trip. I was looking forward to a nostalgic afternoon with my husband and kids. What I came to find was rude service, an in competent staff and a very unimpressive venue. If you enjoy looking up all your own drink recipes for the bar tender, all your questions being answered with I don't know and no one here can help you for that while using out of date technology that is poorly maintained then this is the place for you! To top it off the were extremely rude an I accommodating to a family member with disabilities. Definitely not ASD/ADA friendly! As a mom with family members I need to make accommodations for when traveling or going new places I heavily rely on reviews and web information to make proper accommodations. If your a family in a similar situation I encourage you to avoid this venue completely. You can download most of these games for free now on your phone and desktop and don't need the additional inconvenience. Went on opening night. I think this place has a lot of potential, but it felt like there were also a few things they weren't quite prepared for that think could be improved. Pros: nice game selection (Disclaimer that I personally am not a big gamer and spent most of my time on Mrs. pacman or Tapper while my husband and friends delved into a much wider variety and seemed pleased.) Drinks decently priced. Nice to have a fun new bar concept in the Richardson area. Cons: it was way bright in there, which kind of killed the bar vibe. Also marketed to have craft beer but did not have a large variety. I think/am hoping this may have been due to them just opening however. Also their method for storing credit cards was less than secure--they were all in a stack and they handed my friend a card that was not even hers. We spoke to the bartender about this and he said a card box was being ordered, which hopefully is the case. Fun arcade. Well over 40 single and two player arcade games. Fun 80s and 90s soundtrack playing. Really crowded at 4 pm on Saturday. Kids birthday party when I went. Didn't seem like a young kid friendly environment but they were everywhere. Employees were super nice and had great beer selection when the one I wanted was out. My only gripe is that a few of the pinball machines didn't work which is a bummer as it was my main reason for coming. We went to Free Play with some friends and had a great time. We didn't eat there, but had a few beers and played the great video games. They had all the games I remembered from growing up. Frogger, DigDug, Asteroids, Pole Position,... It was 10 bucks to play all you want, with no coins or quarters to mess with. My buddy is in his mid 40s and he couldn't stop smiling. I was a little nervous that people would stay on one machine and not move on, but everyone seemed equally interested in playing for a game or two and trying something else. The beer selection rivals most any bar I have been too, and the staff was really friendly and helpful. Every machine had a place next to it to put your beer. You could even get a Big Red or a Tab if you didn't want a beer. To seal the experience, they were playing 80s music that really took you back. If you love video games you have to go to this place! I can play taxi driver all day. They do switch games out but keep the popular ones out unless they need repairs. At any given time I would guess they have at least 50 games out. They also have one of the largest beer menus around. The lone knock on the place is the menu is not extensive but even that is fine because they will let you leave and come back as long as you keep the wristband on. read more
