Believe it or not, I've never had Freebirds before and on a whim, I thought that I would try it out for a quick dinner to go. Immediately when I started my order, I regretted my decision. I'm a big fan of customizable bowls as I have some dietary preferences and tend to love all of the veggie toppings but this location gave the impression that all the said toppings had been sitting there for some time. I started my bowl with the cauliflower rice, which I will say, puts them at a leg up from Chipotle, however the cauliflower rice only had a small amount left in the bin and instead of refilling it and offering me a fresh portion, the server scraped up the bottom of the bin and used the spoon to spread it out as much as possible in my bowl to make it look like a full serving. We proceeded down the line with most of the same toppings at Chipotle - beans, grilled veggies, salsa, corn and lettuce but each selection felt like they offered a small portion. The sautéed veggies also looked like they had been sitting there since lunch time. The only ingredient that did seem fresh was the mixed greens at the end of the line. The veggie bowl does come with guacamole but is the same price as all the other standard meat options, unfortunately, $10.28 after tax. In terms of taste, the bowl was nothing exciting. No spice and not a lot of variety in texture. Definitely a one and done for me. read more

Move over Chipotle, because you will never and I mean NEVER, be as delicious as FREEBIRDS. As a proud Texan, I've got so much love for this establishment that oozes out Lone Star State pride. There burritos are literally life changing. Compared to the competition, Freebirds lets you chose the size of your burrito, and the type of tortilla you would like. They also have an abundance of options to put in your burrito/bowl. This includes queso, different types of rice, refried beans (yes! refriend beans!), and all types of veggies. You can also make your own nachos or tacos, which no one else comes close to. During my most recent visit, I went for a bowl. The team working there was incredibly friendly and provided phenomenal service. My bowl had refried beans, Spanish rice, brisket (seasonal item), corn, veggies, and love! Yeee-haw! I love Freebirds, we need to save these Texas icons y'all. They are slowly disappearing off the map, I'll make sure to do my part, you make sure to do yours! read more

Ordered delivery from this spot today, since they were running a BOGO burrito purchase. Haven't had them in a minute but man I'm about it. Their burrito was actually pretty hefty and stuffed well. Tasted amazing. Price was $13, which was a little high. But the BOGO made up for it. Not sure if I'd order it without the BOGO, but that's okay. The taste was good. Service was really quick too. Enjoyed a burrito today with their low carb tortilla, but I added carbs back in with the rice, beans, and corn.‍ I tried...lol! I didn't notice any difference in taste. After I'd ordered I saw a lady with nachos, I was like "Mann! I should've ordered nachos"!!! They looked so good!!! My burrito felt like it weighed at least a pound! And yes, I ate the whole thing surprisingly. LOL! I was served quickly and my burrito was ready in five minutes! The atmosphere is casual and the noise level is average. Busy lunch spot. Freebirds are basically songs by Lynyrd Skynrd, and then cover versions of said song. This is the Freebirds along Washington Corridor (lol) close to the Walmart and Target, serving the Heights and the North part of Montrose and whatnot. Their stuff is pretty tasty but it doesn't have the best service for a Freebirds location. Barbie loves these places and I'm sure we'll be eating at many more of them in the future. The quality of their chicken is, at best, questionable and definitely helps facilitate smooth transitions from the carnivore lifestyle to vegetarian faire. Let's be honest, though: Freebirds IS fast food, so whatever your expectations are...lower them. Taylor St's Freebirds, however, in addition to serving up rubbery chicken, also provides a bustling crew of some of the rudest people I've ever encountered (to be fair: let's limit this review to the Friday night crew). I had a great friend in college named Freebirds. We hung out at least once a week. Freebirds was cool, kind of edgy and always had amazing burritos with fresh and tasty ingredients. After college, Freebirds moved to Houston and we reconnected, usually in Sawyer Heights. Freebirds was everything he was in college and more. He had even added things like queso, bacon, and some kind of spicey tortilla that gives you diarrhea to the menu mix. We were best friends, but something changed over time. We began to drift apart. Freebirds had a dangerous underbelly that began to express itself in smaller portions, higher prices and lower quality. I started to have a dirty feeling every time we hung out. I felt like I was taken advantage of over and over. He kept starting to only take in the relationship and gave nothing in return. It had to end. Freebirds was going down a dangerous path and I wasn't going along for the slide to the guac filled bottom. We had to part ways. So this past week, I decided to check in on Freebirds after a 6 or 7 year break. It was worse than I could imagine. Freebirds was smoking meth and literally had syringes hanging from his arms. The restaurant was a shell of itself and the only other patron was ironically the security service guy that patrolled the parking lot. (It goes without saying that someone jacked my car while I was eating.) Freebirds was peddling gross meat, half the ingredients, everything was cold and they didn't even have the diarrhea tortillas anymore. (I assume he sold them for crack.) The worst thing was they had no bacon. Freebirds acted like he never had bacon, but it just falls on the long list of things he denies these days. How sad! (They still had Wild Cherry Pepsi!!!) I have a feeling that in a few months, I'll drive to MOD pizza across the street and Freebirds will be gone. He will be so forgotten that they won't even have a funeral. They will just dump him in the bayou and he will rot on the concrete banks before slowly draining into the ship channel. Unrelated to the review, I always have this fear that the ship channel water is reconditioned in an East side plant and supplies the city of Houston water system, so we will probably have particles of Freebirds in our belly and be showered on with little bits of his wretched waste of a life body every day. ....and so goes a life that had so much potential. read more

Came right before dinner rush hour. The staff here are super friendly. COVID-19 (SEP.) They wear masks and handle food with gloves. They offer both indoor and outdoor dine-in. However, they do not limit the capacity inside the store nor enforce social distancing. Ordered a half bird steak and it was pretty decent American burrito. Believe it or not, I've *never* been to Freebirds ... or even Chipotle. I'm a Mission B kind of gal. Ya know, try and keep things local. But I was meeting someone here, and figured a low-carb burrito wouldn't be so bad. I ended up ditching the lame low-carb idea and opted for the spinach tortilla. I like how they have various types (spinach, white, wheat and cayenne pepper) and sizes, so I went for the smallest, the hybrid. An all white-meat chicken burrito with a heaping spoonful of guacamole was just five bucks and some change. Service was more than friendly - it was welcoming, cheerful and persuaded me to leave in a better mood. I struck up a "Trapper Keeper" convo with a younger gal, and even met the GM. Diggin' the funky biker atmosphere, and it was super clean. The hot sauce bar was a nice touch, but it's no Mission B. Their stuff is on fire! Once again, I do not come here everyday like you do, and therefore I do not have the menu memorized. He mumbled everything and when it came time for my pico de gallo, he placed a teaspoon amount on there; probably 5 little tomatoes that were diced. I looked at him and was like--uhh...a little more please. Once again, looked thoroughly irritated. I did receive $1 off for showing my UH ID, but it still came out to be around $9. Came in today to redeem my buy one entree get one entree for free when one of the workers basically scammed me out of my offer. It was the end of day so they were low on a lot of items (especially because it was $6 burrito day) I asked for steak and the guy was literally scrapping the bottom of the container barely making two scoops, he hesitates and then asks "you want a lil more" instead of asking properly if i wanted and "extra scoop" the "extra scoop" he gave wasn't even a full scoop but a few pieces. When I go up to the register they ring my order in with an extra scoop. In which, they know that special deals and offers don't apply to extras... so I ended up paying the full cost. I even told them it was an honest mistake and I didn't know that what he was asking was an extra scoop. A dinner for 2 tonight was suppose to be $11 and ended up costing $16 (in which i technically could've gotten another extra $6 bowl/burrito) Just disappointed in the outcome. This spot has become one of our favorite places to stop on our bike ride. We work up our hunger then go get a burrito bowl and it's been like this for about a month. Such a cool staff. They are efficient and super great with their customers. I really like this location because there's plenty of outdoor seating which is perfect for these crazy Covid times. I was starving this last time, and I put in a mobile-order for a salad bowl with drink. This was awesome. I came in and stood in line. This was a mistake - apparently, I could just go to the register and pick up my food! So, I walked on over, and I paid for my order. Unfortunately, it wasn't ready, which was kinda nice because I needed to fill up my drink cup! By the time I filled up my cup, my lunch was ready! I grabbed it and head out. This is by far, the best Freebirds I've been to. I used to love Freebirds and ate there a lot. All my friends agreed and I would always bump into friends whenever I would visit the first Houston Freebirds (by Shepard and 59 years ago). Cougars, Owls, Longhorns, Aggies, Red Raiders, Bears, Lumberjacks, Huskies, Eagles, Mustangs, Bear Cats, and Bob Cats all agree that Freebirds has the best burrito. Something changed over the years. They started to expand, spreading to new cities. I would stop in different Freebirds locations and be disappointed with the food. Off the top of my head, I can count 5 different locations I've been to around the state that are aweful. The location in Houston off of Sawyer near I-10 is excellent. Food and service and cleanliness off this restaurant is constantly good and sets a high bar for the other stores. I come here about once a week and the food is always great. Service is friendly. It's a great lunch every time. Everyone who works here should get a raise. Go to this Freebirds, you will enjoy it. read more

The beef burrito bowl is actually fantastic! Cilantro rice, black beans, vegetables, jalapeños, pick, cilantro and creamy jalapeños sauce with avocado slices!!! That is my go to combo every single time. This is so delicious; the beef here is flavor packed and the ingredients are all fresh which makes the taste SO MUCH BETTER! Slow Service. Cold Food. We came in for dinner yesterday. There was no greeting whatsoever. There was 4 people on the line but they still managed to make us wait for awhile before serving us. This Freebirds is the same as the others, consistently good. What you get at one is the same at others, no surprises. My favorite is a spicy chicken bowl, but I cut the rice and go dbl black beans, cutting the carbs and doubling the protein - try to keep it healthy. read more
