First time here and we had an awesome experience. Longish line of mostly college students when we got there but it went fast. I had a freebird Texas Brsket with my choice of ingredients. The service was fast and friendly. I got to watch them make a super monster burrito for the guy infront of me. It was very entertaining. That gargantuan burrito could feed a family! We had ours to go and everything was still hot and delicious when we got home. I would not mind coming back again. Might try the chicken next time. I've been to Freebirds multiple times since it opened in San Marcos some years back. I like the atmosphere and the service is speedy. The food ranges from tasty to bland, but overall, it's decent. I'm a fan of the chips and queso, though I have friends that say they prefer taco cabaña queso. I suppose the queso is an acquired taste. My wife and I had some free time yesterday morning after a surprisingly quick vehicle service. We thought we'd be waiting at the dealership's waiting lounge for the better part of the morning but we were out of there before 10:00. We didn't have another event until 2:00 PM so we decided to take care of some minor chores...one of which was a trip to Conn's. But, Mel, thought this review was for Freebirds, you ask. Well yes, it was right after we left Conn's that we noticed Freebirds World Burrito on our way back to Kyle. We liked their food from a previous visit so we made tentative plans to come back for lunch...which just happened to be the day after or today. It was a late lunch following some putting competition and pickleball practice in between rainy weather. My wife ordered their burrito bowl with cilantro lime rice, black beans, and carnitas. I opted for the Freebird burrito in a cayenne flour tortilla filled with steak, black beans, cilantro lime rice, sautéed veggies and a whole slew of other flavor-packed ingredients. The burrito was overflowing with ingredients, the tortilla couldn't hold it all in, prompting the guy behind the counter to transfer all the ingredients on to a fresh tortilla before managing to roll that oversized brick of a burrito. We both also had fountain drinks. The portions are generous, the flavors are bursting, fresh ingredients, love the options, the ambience casual and they offered military discounts. What's not to like about this place? Lunch for 2 came out to just under $24 with tip. We'll be back. Note: When one thinks of fast casual burrito joints, one often think Chipotle paved the way for the genre...and one would be wrong. Freebirds World Burrito, founded in So Cal, has been around since 1987, predating Chipotle by six years. Goodness I don't think they care if u visit here. 6 people busy working behind the counter, didn't get a greeting when we walked in. No one in front of us and they were too "busy" to start our order until we waited 10 mins. At the front of the line nonetheless. One girl who was taking half of our 4 person order was getting asked questions the entire time by other employees and I had to repeat myself with EACH TOPPING AND INGREDIENT. Turbo annoying. Everyone was distracted, nothing was stocked (cookies, lids, straws etc). We ate there and it was about an hour from the time we walked in on a very slow Saturday. I used to really like this location. The staff was friendly and did a great job. They always had everything prepped and ready to go. Lately it seems like you go in and they are closing everything down an hour and a half before it closes. It's slow, you walk, and the look you get from employees is "oh god, I guess I have to do my job". Like you're a pest. It's not an inviting feeling and the last few times I've been they don't have 3 or 4 items prepped so they say they are out of it. If they're out if something I get it, stuff happens. But 3-4 items you wanted on your burrito... changes the whole thing. Especially when pay about $20+ for it and a tip. Lol read more

Oh my God, do they serve their food spicy here. I didn't add anything spicy -- maybe the pico? -- but I was sweating by the third or fourth bite. There wasn't a single clean table and I watched other customers cleaning their table while employees are on their cell phones behind counter. There is trash and food all over the floor. Well, we ordered online and had my Mom pick up the food. She instantly (once she got home) thought she was overcharged significantly (near $100) since we only had were a couple of large burritos, few small salads/bowls. I had to double check and see that each burrito was about $16-$19 dollars EACH, salads/bowls(half filled) were $12+ EACH. Sadly, all the sides/salsas we ordered, didnt come with the meals, so the food was bland and the meat seemed a bit sparse (for the cost). We really dont have the extra money to spend on food like this (especially online) when we cant see it made for ourselves (and ask for more LETTUCE in our bowls/salad to fill up the bowl). We will pass on the next time we need dinner for a large family. There are way too many other options for us. read more

I called in a pick up order around 8:20pm and the woman who took my order was super polite! She let me know that the Spanish rice needed 20 minutes to cook, but it should be ready by the time I came to pick it up, so I said that was fine. I got to the restaurant and my order wasn't ready, so she gave me a complimentary drink while I waited. I was super hungry so I asked if I could have a cookie instead, and the manager Kelcey offered me BOTH while I waited. I only waited for about 10 minutes, but when Kelcey brought me my order she told me it was taken care of because of my wait time. She ALSO threw in a little container of extra yummy toppings. When I got home, my bowl was packed to the top, and tasted AMAZING. (Per usual) The customer service at Freebirds is always above and beyond- and I am constantly telling all my friends to hop off the Chipotle train. There was a really thin guy who told me he wanted to major in eating (Presumably at Texas State). The guy at the register was also super friendly. I was getting food for a coworker and my dad - he informed me that the burrito that I had tailored to myself was the largest in the bag. As Always. BUT TODAY WAS DIFFERENT! I like burritos, and what is Freebirds? A subway from of burritos! I enjoy having my burritos, my way, I mean I'm the one eating it right? I can choose to be healthy, or to indulge in the in flavors of the world. The prices are a little high, but having things to your choosing can become pricey. Oh and this place is a great date place, that's how I had my first Freebirds encounter. By the way, don't assume that they will add something to it if you do not mention it. When I first went to Freebirds, I had to see what all the hype was. I was not very impressed. This place started to grow on me. The burritos are outstanding at this place, as are the nachos. I have to give this place 3 starts because the service is horrid. I went in for lunch and had my 9 year old with me. I had placed my order and they lady behind the counter was not paying attention to me. I had to tell her what I wanted at least 3 times. She took my burrito to the register without even asking if I wanted anything else. I then asked her, "What about my son?" She had to make my son's kid burrito and had to bring it out to us because she was more interested in her co-worker's conversation. I have phoned in orders before without any problems at all. The food overall is good at this place. The service leaves something to be desired. If you want Freebirds, skip this place and head over to a location in Austin. Upon walking in at 8 pm for a late dinner. We noticed that none of the meat options were fresh. Nor were the rice and beans. They said they had some steak cooking so we decided to wait for that. 5 minutes later they brought the steak to the line and it was very rare. Most of the meat looked extremely red as if it hadn't been cooked the proper amount of time. I've been to Freebirds enough to know they aren't serving rare meat. We decided to pass on the steak, saying it looked barely cooked. They didn't offer to cook more to the correct temperature. They really weren't very helpful at all. We still ordered a couple chicken fajita tacos. The cold toppings looked fresh, minus the guacamole, so that was good. I also ordered a fountain drink, which was a mistake. The drink machine looked so filthy. I didn't feel comfortable even getting a drink from there. There were gnats flying around and it stunk so bad in that area, which I believe was coming from the bathrooms. This is by far the filthiest Freebirds I've ever been too. Please consider making some changes. The workers that were working were already trying to clear out the line to clean up and it wasn't even anywhere near closing time! Do better.! read more

I Love Burritos, and in this day and age there is some heavy competition to "create your own" burrito! I'm happy to see that Freebirds has survived and maintains itself on a competitive market. The sizes of the burrito vary and explode all the way to Monster size! My belly can only handle Freebird size which is more than plenty! Ordered Carnitas (shredded pork) with the works: Spanish Rice, Black Beans,Pico d Gallo, Cilantro, Corn, Sour Cream, Lettuce, Guacamole and Green Sauce, all in a delish Spinach Tortilla. This is my favorite restaurant by far in this town. Everyone who works here are extremely nice and helpful. The steak is always grilled to perfection and is just the right thing to get on a burrito if you're looking for a tasty pick me up. Great sitting area with custom foil art is part of the culture you can expect when you come in here; the bulletin board with community info is a nice touch too. Any time you see Rose you are in for a treat, great personality that I love to see any time I go in. Overall a great experience solo or with others. So, I don't like to review chains a lot, but Freebirds deserves it. They are fast, cheap, good, and you get a lot for your money. You can get a killer vegan burrito here - I prefer the burrito bowl with corn tortillas in the bottom. They also have a ton of vegan burrito fillings - just skip the cheese, meat, ranch and sour cream. Wheat tortillas contain dairy. The poblano salsa contains honey, so if that is against your dietary plan, hold off on that too. All the ingredients are fresh and business is good so you know they are always cooking up more. You can also order online and have your order ready to pick up within a few minutes (unless its peak time, like lunch). They also still do the frequent buyer card, where 10 points = a free burrito. Their sauces are the best - I love the hot Tomatillo and death sauces, Their BBQ sauce is also pretty good on a burrito. read more

I just had the worst time at FREEBIRDS. I regularly go there 3-4 times a week because of there $5.00 Taco meal. You can't beat 2 tacos, chips and salsa. Well this time I came in and was helped by a guy behind the counter, i think he was the only guy there at the time. He made everything perfect but when he was going to put SALSA into the meal he messed up and put queso. I didn't want him to waste it so i said to leave it and that it was ok. when it was time to pay it was 2.99 more than i was expecting to pay. When I asked why it was 2.99 for a small thng of QUESO the lady told me some BS about it being processed and that's why they had to charge that much. Well I think it's a bunch of crap that you only get a SMALL thing of Queso for 3 flipping dollars. Um, ewe. We stopped at Freebirds on our way back from a baseball tournament in New Braunfels. Figured we'd try something new. I ordered a steak burrito with rice, guacamole, cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, and cheese. It had a slimy texture that almost induced my gag reflex. Seriously. And I couldn't figure out what was causing the slimy texture--other than the combination of runny, soggy pico, slimy avocado, and mushy rice. No mas para mi!! read more

I went with a friend a few days ago and it just seemed like the entire staff was having a bad day. No one acknowledged that we entered the store and no one greeted us. We had to wait to be taken care of and when we were the manager sky and and another employee gave such bad attitude. They were being extremely rude and you could see it in their body movements. There was no more mixed veggies so we had to wait. While we waited we paid but the manager didn't believe us when she asked multiple employees while we told her we paid. Her attitude was so bad she didn't even close the top to the nachos nor did she give me my queso that I asked for on the side.
