Obsessed with Freeport. Literally the best cakes in the world. Every year, we do Freeport for everyone's birthdays. Love the local vibe. Freeport is located right near the train tracks and we used to walk over there when we lived in midtown. Now we drive across town to get cakes! read more

Place is a joke, stopped in to grab a quick pastry before work. Went in right at 8am (when they open) got a couple extras for coworkers. The berry danish was dry and pretty small. Cheese croissant was disgusting! They should have been fresh but they were completely cold and seemed like they were made 24hrs earlier. $7ea and it was just a dense cold cheese block inside a croissant with once slice of ham. To top it off when I went to pay the lady behind the counter said "sorry we're still cashless" Cashless since when!? Covid? Such a joke entitled yuppie bakery. read more

We used Freeport Bakery for our wedding cake and they did not disappoint. The whole tasting experience and meeting with the cake designer was fun and there were so many things we could customize. The cake itself was beautiful and absolutely delicious! We were able to do two different filling flavors with the cake and buttercream and it made for a really fun, spring-time cake. We got SO many compliments on the cake and we froze it and ate it for weeks after the wedding! We are so excited to get our anniversary mini cake on our first anniversary! We also got the eclairs and lemon bars from them which almost completely gone by the end of the night! Our cake did slide, as our venue was a few minutes past their recommended distance, and the planner who picked it up drove it for us, so our florist added some flowers to hide it, but you never would have known, and it still tasted incredible! read more

Long story short yesterday I stoped by in the way home to pick up my daughter's birthday cake. I didn't check the name, got home wife's like this isn't the right cake it has Ken on it not Trinity. She called and the bakery said come and get the right cake keep the other one and gave me a bunch of other goodies that were delicious. This business made it right and I will be coming back. I highly recommend this establishment. Nice and cozy, rusts nice people. read more

My family and I have been going to Freeport Bakery for years. It's wonderful that their cakes and cookies remain as delicious today as they did when we first discovered them over 20 years ago. I've ordered more birthday cakes from Freeport Bakery than I can count: Champagne Cake, Fruit Basket, Lemon Zinger, and Carrot Cake are our favorites. And, their sugar cookies and almond horns are the best. While their bakery counter isn't big, along with cakes and cookies, they manage to offer an incredible selection of other goodies such as pies, quiches, breads, pretzels, croissants, danishes, scones, cupcakes, cake pops, cards, candles, cake toppers, etc. Of course, they have special menu offerings during the holidays and special occasions like Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I loved the Gingerbread House kit we bought during Christmastime as it came with everything we needed and then some. They've managed to pivot their business during the pandemic by offering pre-orders through their website. And, during our most recent visit on Christmas Eve, they also offered curbside pickup. Since they aren't allowing dine-in at the moment, the upside is their small parking lot has more turn-over so you won't need to park down the street. read more

I used to loved this bakery I always talked great about them to my friends and family. It's being a while since my last time, SO disappointed! The almond croissant used to be amazing it was terrible not flavored not filling so Small and the rest of the pastries were so dry! My son made a better banana cupcakes! No idea what happened but I don't mind to over pay when something is good but it wasn't worth this time. read more

Never disappoints. We brought the Dutch apple pie and the pine one marbled cake for Christmas Eve Dinner. We miss the PEAR FLADDEN!! Please bring it back. I also loved the "Present cake" that hasn't been back since the pandemic. The unicorn cake is a new favorite. Absolutely, the best almond croissant in town. Huge portion, light flakey croissant filled with custard and almond paste. More almonds on top with a healthy coving of powered sugar. It's a tradition for us. read more

Freeport Bakery is a part of Sac history. It's a must stop on your list. I love stopping in for cookies to-go. Almond Horns, wedding cookies, macroons, yum! They are well known for their cakes and special event requests. Honestly mouth drooling cakes. They are the queen of the fruit basket cake. My only wish is that offered slices of ALL their cakes everyday. read more

This is a good bakery but we had a bad experience we traveled there all the way from woodland because we like their cakes we brought cash with this and they told us it was card only I wish we would have known that before we left they lost a good size order because of that. They're also right next to a high school why would they not use cash it makes no sense because of that they've lost a customer stupid move Freeport bakery you guys are way overpriced anyway read more

Me and my husband have been to this place many times before. But I don't exactly remember being this way. If I'm wrong, I stand to be corrected. The pastries have always been good. Today I walked in after having about a week of a terrible flu, and ready for a treat. I went ahead and got a croissant for myself and A cinnamon roll for my husband. I also got some special Valentines cookies for my husband. Unfortunately, when I went to pay, she said she didn't take cash. I only had cash. Cash is the currency of the United States. But for some reason she could take my cash to buy a gift card and then take the gift card. That part really confused me. If you can take my cash to buy a gift card, then you should've been able to take my cash to buy the product. Got home and enjoyed the treats but probably won't be back. I'd rather go to Ginger anyway. Just a sidenote, that my business also has the same point of sales and it also accepts cash or card payment read more

A thousand stars for service ad location. The employee was SOOOOOO nice and welcoming!!!! I wished we got the name of this young man. It was our first time visiting and he was patient, answered our questions with knowledge and always with a smile. I hope they treat him good! The location is very nice, close to the University, parking is good, cute murals for those Instagram moments. But the flavor of the food the not memorable or great for our licking. We got a vegetarian quiche and the taste was weird. Like if they made the veggies in a stew full of laurel leaves. It was not pleasant. Plus they do not offer to heat it in a toaster oven. Instead, there is a microwave. I am not a fan of heating pastries or egg dishes on the microwave as it changes textures... But at least it was not fridge cold as they served it. We also got a muffin and a pretzel cheese bun. Those were good, but basic. Our favorite item was the cheese pretzel bun. I do wish they had more savory items for a weekend brunch time. Apparently, this place is popular as the line kept filling up and its super busy. Would we come back? Probably only if in the area to try some of their sweets. But for us, it was not worth the long drive from home directly. The awesome service is the thing we really love about this place. Keep that up. read more

What can I say about this gem of a neighborhood bakery that already hasn't been said. I feel extremely lucky to live down the street from it and can indulge my sweet tooth on a whim. The owner is amazing and kind and aside from the delicious offerings she puts out, has this place organized and humming. During the holidays it's a well oiled machine to get people in and out happily on their way. I have too many favorites to mention but if you haven't tried their pragles, custard wheels and assorted cookies, you're missing out. Yes I didn't mention any of their cakes but that's because they are all delicious and you wouldn't go wrong with whatever choice you make. Amazing Fruit Basket Cake that I can remember from years back and it's still Delicious ! This bakery turns out the best baked goodies you can sink your mouth into like their Cakes , Cookies , Muffins and more. It's a small shop that serves coffee to go along with baked items , couple seating inside but due to the pandemic they have social distancing in place as for the line and ordering once inside. They do have parking lot and If you have not visited this family friendly spot I do recommend it. They also do custom cakes for special occasions don't forget to call ahead of time. read more

I have had Freeport Bakery on my radar for quite a while. My amazing gf, surprised me with a strawberry pre-birthday cake that was sooooo good! The cake was very dense and flavorful without being too sweet. The cream filling and the actual cake paired well. The strawberries on top for decor was fresh and sweet. Have been on a food detox for a month (not alcohol). I wanted to reward myself with some sugar and could not think of a better place than Freeport Bakery. I went in and there were so many beautifully presented desserts, it was tough, but I went with the Morning Bun and Chocolate Dipped Macaroon with a triple espresso. I'm giving this place a 3/5 stars due to the fact that I was expecting more from their cakes. I heard a lot of good reviews about this place so decided to try it. We got their shadow fresca cake for my mom's birthday. The cake was good but the cake was a bit dry. It could've been more moist. The flavors together were good, but I think I expected more. We did everything they told us--put in the fridge until we were ready to eat. Hopefully next time our minds will change. read more

Can't believe I have never wrote a review for Freeport Bakery! My family has ordered from here many times in the past for holidays and special occasions and the cakes have never disappointed. When I was a kid, my grandma loved their fruit basket cake. I had it recently from here and it still holds up! Such a very cute establishment; small, but mighty! This is my go to Bakery in Sacramento when I specially want a fruit basket cake, blackout cake, or a carrot cake! I've never had anything that was not wonderful. Check out the quiche Lorraine, it is delicious! I have been wanting to write this review for a while. Freeport Bakery did an amazing job with our wedding cake. The cake turned out better than what I had envisioned. The tasting was during Covid so we had to pick up the samples (pictured) which was fun because we were able to take them home and sample our selection at home with just my groom and I. I highly recommend this bakery and we are looking forward to getting our 1st anniversary cake next month:) read more

Everything this bakery makes is delicious. From the cookies to the pies you won't be disappointed. A little more expensive than other bakeries but worth every dollar spent. Super friendly staff. Went here for both Thanksgiving and Christmas desserts and they are always organized to help you with your order and get you on your way. They never make feel like you are being rushed even when the line is out the door. Nice little bakery with a French type of feel on the inside. Not much seating inside or outside but on a not so busy day you are able to sit and enjoy a delectable cookie or croissant or slice of pie, while enjoying an incredible view of Freeport Blvd. read more

Phone Ordered a Princess cake for May birthdays. Picked it up on time and the beautiful cake had the three peoples names tastefully written on it! I order cakes for special occasions often from Freeport Bakery because of the quality and variety of their cakes and the wonderful customer service they provide. Everyone has always been so helpful and caring in the service provided. Yolanda helped me out this time when I recently picked up a birthday cake and it was too tall for the box to close so she taped the top to the sides so it would stay open but not flap around. Then I asked if it'll be okay until the next day and she said let me put some plastic wrap in it so it stays completely covered for you until tomorrow. That was so nice of her. Other places just expect me to walk out with the box like that no tape no cover. I remember a bad experience like that at Karen's bakery in Folsom. I will continue giving my business to Freeport bakery and appreciate all of their wonderful employees who provide great customer service. read more

History

Established in 1987.

Walter and Marlene Goetzeler bought Freeport Bakery in 1987. It was a small but delightful bakery specializing in cakes. They inherited seven staff members. Over the past twenty years, the Goetzeler's long hours and amazingly dedicated staff grew the bakery into an award winning neighborhood bakery. Now employing over 45 employees, many long term, Freeport Bakery is a Sacramento institution. .

Meet the Business Owner: Walter G.

Walter grew up in his parent's bakery in Bavaria. He slept on cozy flour bags in the early hours of the morning while his father baked his famous breads and his mother ran the bakery. Taking after his grandfather and his father, Walter began baking at an early age. After studying baking professionally, he decided to tour the US. He bought a motorcycle and started his trip across the states. His last stop, in San Diego, was where he met his future wife and business partner, Marlene. They decided to buy Freeport Bakery in 1987 and made the move to Sacramento...never looking back.

We ordered the Strawberry White Chocolate Mousse cake for my son's 18th birthday. Not super sweet even though white chocolate can be that way. The mousse was light and not too decadent. A rich complex flavor. It had a little bit of ginger in it, you could definitely taste the ginger, but it did not overwhelm the rest of the porridge. The chicken was good, and for the mushroom, they used black mushrooms, which have a deeper flavor than regular mushrooms. So very good. It looked like a small bowl, but I couldn't finish it. Some came home with me, and it reheated very well. It also came with Chinese donuts to put in the porridge. Chinese donuts are a little bit different. They definitely taste like a doughnut, except they are not sweet at all. They are savory donuts, and are perfect to use as a crouton, so to speak. The green tea was very good, and they didn't overdo it with the lemon, and that hotdog roll that I had later, the pastry was delicious with just a little bit of a "chew" to it, they were definitely high-quality hot dogs, and it wasn't just green onion. So light and fresh and you can really taste every flavor. If you spend over $15 each visit, you also get a stamp card. Six stamps get you a free drink or a free slice of cake. There's a spot in the back to sit, but I haven't seen anyone use it. It's very small with only about three tables. It's more of a grab and go place and I'm sure they're known for specialty cakes not so much their bakery goods. I haven't tried their dim sum yet, but they also offer it frozen for you to take to go.

They put dry ice inside and then pour water into it, making it look like the elephant is blowing smoke out of its trunk. My daughter was completely mesmerized. Watching her reaction was worth the visit all by itself. What I loved most was that it wasn't just a gimmick. The drink was actually good, and the elephant made such a cute keepsake afterward. It felt like getting both a treat and a souvenir. The café itself had a fun atmosphere, and it was one of those places that felt a little different from your typical coffee or tea stop. Helpful tip: If it's your first visit, order one of the drinks served in the elephant. The presentation alone is worth it, especially if you're visiting with kids. The tartar was a solid app, the oysters were delectable, the bread was toasty and hot with a generous side portion of creamy butter. I adjusted the sweetness to 30% and added boba. Like the first time, the drink was really good. The boba had the perfect balance of softness and chewiness.
