First time here and we really enjoyed the food and the vibe. It's all about oysters at an oyster bar, of course, so let's start there: they were delish, and we chose among a agreeable variety and wound up with a dozen ($36) briny, thick, succulent oysters. Add in some beers and a wonderfully spicy, overflowing Bloody Mary and we came away smiling. We ate outdoors under cover in the rear; very comfy and quiet. Inside it's very cozy and the vibe seems lively. Good service (thanks Rachel) and a good experience.

Outstanding oysters and noms! The Freeport Oyster Bar is an unassuming little place tucked just behind the Freeport Historical Society. There is plenty of parking in the many lots that are smattered around the popular LL Bean destination. They oysters are shucked as you order them, they come with lemon, and mignonette sauce, we tried ours with a side of kelp relish (not for me cause it was a lil spicy but my nephew was all about it). Oysters are briny served over ice, lots of liquid still in the shell for slurping fun. They also have other things to go with your oysters like soups, salads, snacks like popcorn and smoked salmon dip. They have something on the menu called Tinned Fish Plate - I'm going back soon to try that cause tinned fish is up my alley. Add lobster rolls and hot dogs to the list of yums! This is a place for locals and tourists alike. The night we went there were some local fishermen/lobster men buying drinks for everyone at the bar - but you have to ring the bell first! You'll see the bell.... The bar tender was on her game, we tried their rotating mocktail, and I tried the Ruby Slipper just because of it's name. Service was fast, friendly, and busy. The inside is like the hull of a ship, think nautical theme, exposed beams, old warm wood that looks like it was salvaged from the sea. I highly recommend if you're in Freeport, have some cold beers, some fresh LOCAL oysters and that's the way life should be.

    * Great food (we had oysters + clam chowder with sour dough bread) * Friendly staff * Easy parking in the back * Patio + indoor seating (tables vs bar) * Near fun stores * They allow dogs outside on patio (not sure about inside)

Fun little stop for a break in the Sun on their patio. Service was good. Oysters were delicious. Bloody marys hit the spot. Easy in and out for a little Maine lunch

Only one waitress was working, so there was a wait, but it was all well worth it! Had the clam chowder soup with sourdough bread, along with a half dozen fresh oysters. The chowder was really, really good, and the clams tasted like they were fresh. They served 2 kinds of oysters, which were delicious with just lemon. Washed down with draft beer (Allagash). Waitress was frazzled but still very friendly. The place was neat and tidy, with most of the seating at the bar. Would come again, if I'm ever in the area.

Delicious oysters and grilled cheese! I got the kelp margarita and loved it too! Service was really fast and the server was happy to tell me all about their oysters and how they source them. Very cute location too! 10/10 recommend

Bombazine- the deep cup is almost over-filled- these are delectable: creamy, soft, slightly salty, slightly sweet

7/4/25 Went in as the doors opened at noon on the Fourth- the only one to sit at 'The Shuckers' Bar' (which I recommend). The three shuckers were engaging, friendly, until the tourist crowd rapidly filled the place and the oyster orders swamped the shuckers. They are good, however and very very few shell bits were left. The restaurant feels new, fresh, inviting. I had six bombazines, cultivated in Brunswick, ME and six Besos Del Mar (Spanish for kisses of the sea). The bombazines were thick, filled a deep cup, were meaty yet soft, and crushed easily with the tongue against the roof of the mouth; creamy, slightly sweet, slightly salty, with a sweet finish like a German Spaetlese. Sublime ; required no help from the mignonette or lemon slice. I found the Besos Del Mar slightly harsh and off-putting, also briney and with a taste vastly improved with a half-teaspoon of mignonette or a few drops of lemon. Both species were fresh, full, filling the cup, as the photos illustrate. I will be back here, frequently!

Great place to enjoy a drink and a snack (or meal). Super friendly, nice little bar inside.

I've been to Freeport plenty of times but have never stopped in here before! I'm from the area, but had a few friends visiting from out of town and they insisted that we find somewhere to get some chowder. The restaurant is very cozy (not too many tables for indoor seating), but luckily we didn't have to wait long as a party was leaving just as we arrived. The service was very quick and the waitress was attentive to our table. I ordered the Winter Kale Salad, which was really fresh and delicious! I wasn't too hungry so this was perfect. My brother ordered the grilled cheese, and my friends ordered the clam chowder. All of it arrived warm and was perfect for a chilly day. I will definitely be going again next time I'm in Freeport and will recommend to anyone visiting!

It's very tasty food, look nice not only on picture but even better in real. I think we made a right choice today.

Went in for an early lunch with a few friends. We ordered so we could all share. The smoked fish toast was delish as well as the cesar salad and the seasonal grilled cheese! We all loved how it was decorated on the inside and out!

From musty dive hotel bar, and not one of the fun ones (well there was this one older lady that would serve you the strongest drink of your life whether you told her you were driving or not but other than that), to fine dining. Beyond impressed! This place is BEAUTIFUL and I don't know how they did it, but it doesn't have that smell anymore. And anyone that has been there in the past knows exactly what I'm talking about. Kinda like your grandmother's basement after a flood from 15 years ago that no one probably cleaned up. Yeah you know the smell. The short ribs were gorgeous, the reduction was perfect and the wild mushroom au gratin was heavenly. NY strip was perfectly tender, seasoned well and cooked to perfection. I'm never surprised anymore when a restaurant forgets what "medium" actually is. Sadly, I'm at the point where I'm surprised when they get it right. Pleasantly, but still surprised. This place, definitely gets my vote when I go to Freeport to spoil myself. If you haven't gone here yet, you're doing it wrong.

Our server was delightful, very efficient, and kind. The food, however, was absolutely awful. The diver scallops were the size of bay scallops and tasted like burnt molasses. And the risotto was far from a risotto, unfortunately. We barely had four bites. When the server took our plates, they were still full of food, and when he asked if we wanted a to go box, we said no . We thought that might be a red flag about our experience. But it was not and that's not his fault. We've eaten in dozens and dozens of restaurants and this by far was the worst food we've ever experienced.

Looking to have a nibble and a mocktail or cocktail with friends? The Abbey has it (and more). The vibe: relaxed, warm, mid-modern meets minimalism, gorgeous stained glass windows, lots of natural light pouring in, the most comfortable seats you've ever sat in at a high top, lots of wood and greenery, a playlist that makes you stop and lean in. It's a cozy place that makes you want to stay a while. The drinks: I tried an iced cardamom latte with oat milk and it was fantastic (if you've ever had the vanilla cardamom cold brew coffee from Trader Joe's, it was an elevated version of that). I've also had a couple cocktails - since they make their syrups in house when they run out, they run out and your drink might be unavailable... BUT the staff is exceptional at making alternate recommendations and even making totally off menu drinks entirely! The food: Several (clearly labeled) vegan options! We tried the muhammara (a housemade dip topped with spiced walnuts, chickpeas, and three half slices of toasted sourdough) and the hummus plate (housemade and topped with marinated chickpeas and a drizzle of olive oil, accompanied by six naan wedges). LOVE the quantity of both dips, but wish there was some other dipping vessel outside of (the sometimes stodgy) bread. A little heap of rainbow veggies would be amazing! While the muhammara was a bit more liquidy than I've had elsewhere, the hummus was thicker than I was expecting. Solid shareable options regardless! (Grab a seat, order at the counter, and they'll call your name when your drinks are ready so you can go grab them; if you've ordered food, they'll bring that to your table. It was confusing what the clean-up situation was, several of us just sort of walking back to the bar with our plates and cups.) Excited to return again!

The issues were glaring though. We arrived early for a group reservation of 10 and started at the bar. The service was very slow and we got the sense that the bartender was frustrated that we showed up early with the idea to have a cocktail before our reservation. Bar service continued to be painstakingly slow throughout the night. The restaurant was somehow out of several of their menu options (despite the restaurant not being busy on a weekend day). Not the end of the world, but it left us asking some questions. The major issues really arose when our entree courses were served. They had somehow ran out of french fries, and you could see that in the portion size of the frites in our steak frites (the picture included in our review was our plate -- we had BY FAR the most fries out of those at the table who ordered steak frites). And they ran out of steak - one of the people at our party who ordered steak frites was served a hamburger (which isn't even on the menu). Overall, I thought that we overpaid for the food and if it wasn't for the good company at our dinner - I would have been very frustrated.
