I'm not sure how much healthier a vegan cupcake is, but I do know that they are damn tasty from Freesoulcaffe. This place is way larger than I expected it to be, with a good amount of seating inside and a huge patio area. I ordered up my vegan cupcake and a cup of Spanish Mocha (to complete my chocolate fix for the day, since clearly the cupcake wasn't enough), and went to find a good place for me and my laptop to sit. Now, don't get me wrong, this place has all the cuteness and charm you'd expect from a adorable vegan cafe in Old Town Tustin, but I searched high and low, inside and outside... and even asked - the only plug-in to be found is in the hallway to the bathroom. So... basically there are no outlets anywhere. There is free wifi, so you can use whatever juice you've got in your computer - but then, time's up, buddy. Other than the power outlet issue, I've gotta say - I can see myself acting all granola a few times a week for another gorgeous socal morning on their patio and a tasty Spanish mocha. read more

I like cinnamon rolls. I like apple cider with cinnamon. BUT one thing that I didn't like was this cinnamon spanish mocha. When I say "granted I didn't read the description", I meant I've had MANY SPANISH MOCHAS before and never has it had cinnamon in it, or at least to the point that that's all I could taste, so I was kind of taken off guard when I had my first sip. BUT you're partially right, maybe I wouldn't have ordered the spanish mocha if I had seen that it contained cinnamon because I've never had one that has? So the weirdest thing just happened. My sons (one in stroller) and I were walking from the library to I initial. We walked by this cafe and my 4 year old wanted a cookie so we stop in. We go pick out a cookie ($3.50) and a coffee for me and go order at the counter. The lady asked me very rudely if I was sitting down or If it was to go. Before I said to go, my son said he wanted to sit. So she tells him(he's 4) that he can't sit because we have a stroller and we weren't ordering lunch and they were only seating for the lunch crowd. I am very aware of my massive bob stroller being in the way but to be told I couldn't sit down because I had a stroller and wasn't ordering a meal, really pissed me off. My wife and I stopped in for a quick bite. The food and drink were of good quality, if a little on the pricey side. However, since we were not ordering lunch, we were asked to sit in the rickety, uncomfortable chairs lining the window. Not only did this make us feel like second-class citizens, but the place was damn near empty. I would not have minded if there were a rush, but there were plenty of comfortable places to sit -- and there we were, relegated to the cheap seats. This place is close to my daughter's preschool and I have visited on occasion with some of my fellow moms. One of the servers there was really nice. I returned with my two girls and ordered two drinks and was told by the manager that I had to sit at the bar area with my drinks. Now, you can imagine how difficult that is with a 1 1/2 and a 3 year old. One of the servers was kind enough to give me a high chair. When I asked why we had to sit at the bar the manager told me that they were trying to be organized and they were preparing for lunch- it was 10:47 am and no one was in the patio. I decided to come back with some of my fellow moms and we were able to sit on the patio. We saw another fellow mom with her little one and she approached the patio and used their restroom to change her daughter. One of the servers immediately confronted her and said she needed to order something because the restrooms were for customers only. We immediately felt uncomfortable. This place is very unfriendly to people with little ones, so beware. The overpriced drinks are not worth it with bad service and poor attitudes towards little people. read more

I'm so in love with this restaurant. I wish they were in my backyard instead of 30 min away in Tustin :'( First of all. Vegan. That's enough of a review for me since every other non-Vegan place literally has one item on the side dish menu that's friendly for me to choose from. Second of all. Miso ramen. YAASSS. Tons of ramen places everywhere, I know. Most of the vegetable soups though have plain ol' vegetable broth, while the meaty versions have this tasty looking, delicious smelling pork bone broth. Well, Freesoulcafe has a miso broth, and it's really good. If you're not fond of miso, no worries, they have kimchi and others as well. Third of all. Burgers. Not your traditional, run-of-the-mill mushy veggie patty burgers, but legitimate, "are you sure this isn't some kind of meat?" burger. The Hatch burger is fantastic and the sauce is delicious. Pairs perfectly with the burger. Coffees are great as well and the service has been friendly each time I've dined here. Love this place to the moon and highly recommend. Great for vegans and even non-vegans. I've tried it on my "I hate vegan food ;P" friends and each one of them was eating their words (and mouthful of burgers) by the end of the meal. read more

The name should be changed into "SOUL-FREE CAFFE" from Freesoul Caffe. 1. One star for food and price: vastly overpriced for below-average food in disguise as a healthy vegan option. I ordered breakfast hash brown, coconut pecan pie and coffee. Coffee was ok, but the hash brown was extremely salty and greasy, not worth the price at all. The coconut pecan pie tasted like something they had made a week ago. 2. Zero star for service: Our server took my individual tray (a small glass jar of coffee and a mug came on a wooden tray) even when I said I didn't finish my coffee. She gestured to me that I needed to lift my mug, and took the tray away even without saying anything or apologetic smile. She later tried to clear up the table although I was still working on my hash brown. After the food is served, all they seem to care about is "when are they going to leave?" 3. Negative points (not deserving a star) for spirit: They are not in the food service industry. They seem to confuse themselves as in public education sector(!) or military cafeteria by telling customers where they sit, how long they stay (It is not an AYCE restaurant!), and what they should not do in their café. You should not open a laptop or a magazine while waiting for food to come out. They consider it as study/work, which is forbidden there. Yes, they can set their rules in their restaurant, but I can just as well protest that the rules and the way they enforce it are entirely bizarre. *** They treat you like a second-class citizen if you order ONLY DESSERT AND COFFEE like my friend and I did on another visit last year. Thank goodness for Yelp! I had no idea where Tustin was when I bookmarked this place. Local area Vegan/Yelp legend, Harmonie T's 4-star review did not prepare me for the Vegan heaven that awaited us when we pulled up to the street parking at Freesoulcaffe. Beware when crossing the street at the crosswalk here. Between area drivers indifference towards pedestrians, and having your eyes glued to whatever goodie you're carrying away from here, it can be a treacherous path to take. Make that a rewarding, yet slightly dangerous path. And yes, you should certainly be taking something "to go" no matter what or how much you order "for here". Gazing into the display case, we couldn't decide what we wanted. The tortes appeared heavenly while the pies with their perfectly swirled whip cream topping where calling out my name in a sensual voice (Jooooohn, oh John! Pick me! Pick meeeeeeeeeeee!) We settled on a lone Mocha Cream Pie since we had just come from stuffing our faces in San Diego. Although my childhood favorite, pumpkin pie looked to be an excellent choice as well, the mocha pie was a better fit for coffeetime. The creamy mousse filling was devoured in epic fashion. The Oreo type crust wasn't too memorable as you could hardly taste it over the creamy combinations. No worries, as that isn't a bad thing. Thankfully as we were leaving their lovely outdoor patio, my babygirl asked one of the patrons what she was drinking, or else we might've left without trying the tastiest thing on their menu. The Matcha Green Tea Granita with Boba. It's a superbly sweetened frozen smoothie concoction that will knock your socks AND drawers off! In fact it was so outfreakingstanding that we went back later during our stay for another one. The Boba itself was a little bit chewy, so if anything, they need to work on that, but the overall flavor of the drink is pure ecstasy in your mouth. While I didn't get to try their coffee, if it tastes half as good as the granita, and looks anything like the exquisitely crafted latte in their flyer, this place will deserve six freakin' stars from me. Desserts are a must here! Cheesecake varieties are a definite try at least once! Came here for a night out with some friends and had a great time! The food here is amazing, and you wouldn't think it's vegan (especially the desserts!). This place is a small little hole in the wall that serves everything ranging from salads, sandwiches, and pastas. I had the portobello panini complete with their signature salad. The service was pretty good, although some people in my group had to wait a bit before getting their food. The salad is really good - it's got mixed greens with green kalamata olives (there's seeds in it, so beware), and it comes with this tart vinaigrette that tastes so tangy, but great against greens - truly refreshing. My panini was really good too. It's got a grilled mushroom with this pesto spread - so delicious. It was extremely filling, but I also got to try some of my bf's pasta - SO GOOD! Definitely consider getting their pastas. We ended the meal with a peanut butter torte and this pumpkin bread - both extremely good. The peanut butter torte was very peanut-buttery, so if you don't like the heavy denseness that is peanut butter, get something else. We won't be back. We've been a few times, mainly for coffee and dessert since the late night vegan dessert options are lacking in this area. The service was lacking and we were relegated to sitting at their "bar" because we were "only having dessert"...even though their entire restaurant was pretty empty as well as their patio. Had they told us about their rule before we ordered, we would have gone elsewhere or ordered our items to go. We quickly ate our desserts at the bar (the chairs were so very uncomfortable) and left. Came here around 5;50pm to have dinner /review books. Needed a place to kill 1.5 hr till other plan. When i was paying i was told that i couldnt study here.i prob missed their sign on door, no problem. I put my books/papers back to my car. As the guy at the counter told me that we could have any table , we got a table for 4 ppl. This is a beautiful hole in the wall in Tustin!! The ambiance is rustic cool with a little bit of an urban kick! Delicious food, drinks, and dessert? What else do you need, a bib? Ha ha! High-quality, delicious and satisfying Vegan food! We tried Freesoulcaffe today for the first time, having been regulars at Native Foods, Loving Hut, Veggie Grill and the usual haunts. As soon as we walked in, I felt like this was a place where two sexy Vegans could meet for a date. It was like being in a chic Santa Monica eatery. The ambiance is lovely: soft lighting, natural materials and a dessert case that will make you do double takes. We ordered the following items: Hatch Burger (dope - hatch chilis, sriracha and THE BEST PATTY), Panini Poulet ("chicken" panini with bahn mi-type veggies), Almond Freddo (best I've had, doesn't need sweetener) and a Soy Chai Latte (decent). We topped it off with a Vegan FSC cookie, which my husband liked, but I thought was dry and not worth the calories. Burgers/sandwiches ran about $12 and my freddo was over $5... next time, I'm trying the affogato (soy ice cream with espresso)! A nice quaint cafe locate in Old Town Tustin. This is my favorite go-to place for lunch during the work week. I also like bringing friends here as it is a comfortable place to chat and catch up. Not to mention that their food is healthy and so yummy! I keep going back and trying different things and there has yet to be an item that I have not liked. I don't know how they do it. I don't know how they make everything taste so good. And it's not just their main dishes--it's also their desserts and their drinks. I spend so much money here and it is worth it. I like their sandwiches and I also like their salads. I almost always get the match green tea latte when I come here. This place is vegan so they use soy for a lot of their drinks. I've tried several of their desserts and they are delicious as well as pleasant to look at. It's worth it to come here just to stare at the desserts. I have more respect now for vegan diets. For $70 before tip, we had 2 burgers, 2 soups, 2 teas, a chai tea, a velvet cake, chocolate truffle tart, carrot cake and a chocolate chip cookie. Well worth it! I'm very pleased spending on great food! The truffle burger was out of this world amazing! The salad that came with out burgers were very crisp and fresh! Right amount of dressing! The chili soup I had was good, and spicy! Good spicy though. My mom had the port.mushroom soup and she loved it! I can't find really good vegan desserts in Vegas so I went a little crazy here. The carrot cake and red velvet are beyond moist...it was like silk! The chocolate tart was silk x10! I could eat this for days before going into chocolate coma! The cookie was good. And to wash it down we had a nice hot chai tea! It was pretty epic the feast we had! Pizza wasn't available during the time we dined in so we may be back for it tonight! Okay, so I've read other reviews, and I realize that people have complained about customer service issues. Personally, I haven't experienced any, and this place has become a huge favorite of mine. If you're looking for a place to hang out and study, or somewhere where you can make modifications to the menu, you're not in the right place. If however, you are looking for high-quality, AMAZING food in a place with great ambiance, JACKPOT. I mean it. Every single thing that this place serves has been well thought out, and hits the nail on the head. Vegan BLT? Bomb. Alfalfa Sprout Sandwich? Awesome. Earth Salad? Fantastic. Pizzas? Yes, please. I've tried every single soup and have loved 'em all. I'm not a huge coffee snob, but I've been with people who are, and they're always impressed by the coffee, too. I happened to be in the area, and I was SO excited about trying a new vegan with such great reviews, but it was a bit disappointing. The matcha granita tasted like straight up soy milk, not matcha, and it was way too sweet. I couldn't even finish half of it, and it turned me off for getting dessert that I was excited about getting. The truffle burger was pretty dry with a tiny portion of salad. I asked if they had any condiment to add to the burger because it was so dry, and they were going to charge me $1.50 for it. I left hungry unfortunately. My husband got the chia pudding which also just tasted like sweetened soy milk and chia. 3 stars because I want to support vegan places, but they could easily do a lot better with some minor improvements. read more

A different kind of vegan food experience. All the dishes were tasty, light, and refreshing. The salad (KOMBUCHA), pizza (FENNEL SAUSAGE), panini (BLT), and pasta (FREESOULINI + FETTUCINE) were all good options. There was a gnocchi dish that we tried and did not like because it was too soggy, and inedible. When we informed them of this they did nothing about it, and just said it is what it is. They could have been nicer about. The staff has an awkward vibe to them thats hard to explain, but it makes me feel uncomfortable. +5 stars for the food -1 star for the service read more

WTF. This is the restaurant equivalent of a butter face. CUTEST place ever; such a great environment/concept. You walk in and there's this magical little courtyard...super quiet, trickling fountain in the middle, ample seating, plants, etc. Definitely not a place you'd expect to be nestled in downtown Tustin. Then you walk into the restaurant itself, and again, on point with the design, very clean and organized....could have used some music, but I really liked the unexpected calm/quiet vibe. Pretty good sized menu, only a few breakfast items (only thing KIND OF gluten-free was the steel cut oats though so if you eat gluten-free, breakfast aint gonna be the ticket for you here). Lunch items consisted of some typical sounding salads, soups and sandwiches. Not a single item on the menu made me think "man I have got to come back and eat here," but maybe if i was just vegan I would be enticed since there aren't a ton of vegan places in the area (still I could recommend at least a handful over this place). The gluten-free options are lacking, but I never judge a place based on that. I WILL however judge on the fact that you sell yourself as a vegan-friendly place, have "vegan butter" (oh, ok you mean margarine?)...and yet don't have ANY vegan protein sources (tofu, seitan, tempeh?), come on it's 2013 and shit. Anyway, I came here for two reasons: I've had it bookmarked for three years They have almond milk So I go to order after looking over the extensive coffee/tea menu (only one other customer at the time, it was 3:00pm so lunch rush was done), and the guy who helped me was super nice. He talked me out of ordering anything with almond milk because he said it tastes bad with their coffee, uhhh...ok. I went with a single Spanish Mocha with Soy Milk. He warned me that this drink is very "cinnamon-y" ....bring it on boo. I paroozed the bakery case while I waited and noticed two gluten-free items...one was a peanut butter bar which basically looked like a really chewy rice krispy treat with peanut butter mixed in and topped with chocolate (nahhh), the other was an almond bar which looked like the same thing but with almonds mixed in (nahhhh part two). I will say that for $3.75/each they were pretty big pieces. The rest of the menu seemed absurdly overpriced. A garden salad (again no protein source) for $12.00....you're joking, right? My produce for an entire weeks worth of meals is around that much. They aren't touting the veggies to be local or organic so what's with the steep price? Anyway, so my drink comes out and in my head I'm thinking, that has to be a sample of something, there's no way that little thing is my drink. I've never seen a coffee cup so small. It was literally 8 freaking ounces. I've ordered espressos bigger than that. Wasn't even cute, it was just pathetic. So, I got over it (jk, I don't get over anything, ever) and took a sip expecting to hear angels. No angels. Just that wah wah wahhhh sound from The Price is Right. The coffee didn't at all taste burnt (like so many other places) which I appreciated, but it could be because I could hardly taste the coffee, and forget about the cinnamon...I tasted no such thing in this drink at all. The mocha element was there, but I don't get what made it a Spanish Mocha...it was a $4.30 cup of average, non-burnt coffee with a lot of foam and some chocolate specks at the bottom. The only other thing on the drink menu that intrigued me was the Red Bean Granita, but I could give two shits about it now that I feel so ripped off. The other customer ordered one of the Granitas and it was in a huge cup (this drink is ice blended, thus adding volume) so I was kinda jealous. The Granitas are around $4.75 I believe, and to me, that's still a rip-off...just in a bigger cup. I will absolutely not be returning here, but I can finally remove the bookmark from my Yelp page now. Guess my soul still belongs to the devil, bummer. read more

I just tried this place last night for the first time. It was so amazing. Friends recommended it so we were I'm the area and stopped in. The staff was so nice and friendly. They had recommendations and great info. I ordered the BLT sandwich, which is a client favorite. My boyfriend got the vegan ham sandwich both were delicious. I had a bite of his, hehe. We also tried a dessert to go. The raspberry cheesecake was amazing. Definitely going again and trying something new there soon. read more

The place had 4 other people there and they want to kick out a paying customer because I'm reading????? I had 2 people come up to me within 15 minutes to ask if I wanted to order anything else.....
