First of all, please note the lunch menu is just 1 page and I heard the dinner menu is more expansive! I had lunch with 2 girlfriends and 3 toddlers under the age of 3... and somehow, we all survived and everything was delicious. My favorite was definitely the ceviche: it was fresh and tart and clean and full of flavor. The shrimp dish was kind of like a pizza? but it was good with the ceviche sauce. The service was excellent- our water cups were never empty, and the toddlers were given cups with lids. The ambiance is vibey and bright, and there is a full bar. I am suuuuuure it gets crazy at nighttime, but during the day (and it was Saturday!), parking was not bad and I saw lots of cars go in and out.

I came here with a reservation for a birthday dinner with a big group. We ordered the family menu set to share with everyone. The set menu was super filling and the food was pretty good. My favorites is the steak and salad. It was super yummy. The food did take awhile to come out but the servers checked up on us often. Overall, the food was good but a bit pricey. I would come back for special occasions and try other items on the menu next time!

hidden gem? I only just now discovered this restaurant in old town tustin!! what a gem :) this spot is so cute inside especially for lunch/brunch time. I need to come back for the dinner menu. Service was so great and friendly they had great recommendations for dishes and drinks! The drinks were tasty and the food was very flavorful. I especially enjoyed the cubano torta... such good flavorrr and pressed nicely it wasn't messy to eat. Will definitely be back!!!!!

Sooooo good. This place is amazing. Every detail is in order. Val was our most excellent server and she was great! Inside seating or outside seating you can't go wrong. The cocktails are great nice beer selection great wine list. I had a Willamette Pinot Noir call Coeur de Terre. My group only had small plates as we were not that hungry but the quality of all our dishes makes me want to come back for the Platos Fuertes! Definitely come give this place a chance and ask for Val.

I had high hopes for this place when looking up places to take my mother for her birthday. Highly recommend making a reservation. Once we arrived, we were seated relatively quickly. The inside was decorated beautifully and there were plenty of tables for parties of any size. We tried many different things. The food tasted good but I personally felt that the dishes were more to the blander side. When asked if there was anything they offer for a birthday, we were just told by the staff plainly that this restaurant 'offers nothing complimentary' right in front of my family. That's fine, but on a whole atmosphere level, I won't be taking my family back here or recommending this place to my friends. There are better options close by.

Chaak is at the center of charming Old Town Tustin. Between walks around this captivating area, you can relax at Chaak's patio or inside its modern dining room to enjoy its supreme Yucatecan cuisine. Cochinita Pibil: When you unwrap the banana leaves, the prize is the pork shoulder that has been smoked for 12 hours. Grab some of the insanely tender pork with the warm and supple blue corn tortillas. Add some achiote-sour orange braising juice, pickled onions and watermelon radishes. Top it with the avocado puree and salsas. Also add some black charred habanero sauce, whose fiery heat puts this dish over the top. Pulpo al Guajillo: The grilled octopus is lightly charred and crispy, and nice and meaty on the inside. The garbanzo bean puree is like the smoothest creamiest hummus. The diced chayote is similar to young potatoes with a little crunch. Crumbled red chorizo enhances the savoriness of the ingredients. And the hoja santa gremolata is a medley of green herbal flavors. Ceviche Campeche: The cubes of striped bass and octopus are delicate and soft, combined with yellow and red cherry tomatoes, onions, cilantro, scoops of avocado, avocado mousse, cucumber, watermelon radish, and leche de tigre. The zing from the lime juice and the crunch of the blue tortillas makes for a perfect bite. Tamal Colado: This is a deconstructed tamal. The masa is molded into a slender rectangular block. The consistency of the masa is like pudding, just really soft and creamy. Chile braised lamb shank is placed on the masa. Then, an herby tangle of carrot tops and sorrel leaves go on top. On either side are clumps of crunchy cucumber-mint xni pek and silky hazelnut muhammara. Parrillada Yucatan: If you are still hungry, this mixed grill plate will do the job. The prime skirt steak is exquisitely cooked, so soft, moist, and tender. The smoked sausage has a wonderful flavor and is a little spicy. Pollo pibil has a dry rub of achiote and sour orange, and it gives a nice smoky kick. Chuuk Trio: This appetizer plate features sikil p'ak (a dip of pumpkin seeds), guacamole, and salsa. Dip the tortillas and light and crispy rinds into these dips.

Had the pleasure of dining at Chaak, and since I knew I'd be in the area that day, I decided it was best to make reservations. We arrived about 15-20 minutes early because we weren't sure how busy it would be. When we walked in, it was surprisingly slow, which was odd, the maitre d took a good minute to seat us. There were plenty of available tables, but she decided to wait until exactly 6:30, which felt a bit off. Our server also took a while, maybe another 10-15 minutes to arrive, but at least someone was pouring water in the meantime. After some time, Lyndsay came over apologizing, explaining she was busy cleaning up broken wine bottles? Once that was sorted, everything got much better. We ordered the bone-in NY steak, octopus (pulpo asado), esquites, and finally the Bombas! Everything was absolutely -- it was a fantastic experience. I can't wait to visit their sister location, which offers more modern Mexican cuisine, compared to Chaak, which is inspired by the Yucatan Peninsula. Very modern ambiance! Reservations not required but highly suggested!

Quality Mexican food. The ceviche was pretty good I like the freshness, the Caesar was whatever, tacos are decent. The highlight is their sea bream - so fresh w the sauce and goes perfectly with the carmelized onion. Also their empanada is corn and super crispy and cheesy. Great ambiance and great staff!

I ate here with a group of work colleagues. When I had Googled the location before coming I realized that I would be eating at my first Michelin star rated restaurant in the US. This in a old downtown area of Tustin where parking is limited; I had to cruise around the block a few times to find a parking place on the street. We were seated after checking in with a reservation. The restaurant is dimly-lit so I needed the light on my phone to illuminate the menu. I started out with the Higa, a gin cocktail. There were quite a few offerings to chose from but ended up getting the half chicken. That chicken had a generous spice rub on it and gave it great flavor. I was disappointed that they had very limited offerings for vegetables. My colleagues were pleased with their food and the service was good. I had never been to a Michelin starred restaurant in the US and didn't know what to expect. I was surprised when I saw how plain the restroom was. This was a four star experience for me.

I asked an OC foodie friend to recommend a good brunch spot around Santa Ana, and his answer was immediate: "Chaak Kitchen, hands down." Great call--and it's even listed in the Michelin Guide. The restaurant is beautiful, with inviting indoor/outdoor seating (a bonus since I could bring my dog). The brunch menu is somewhat limited, but there are still plenty of appealing options. We started with the empanadas, which were excellent--perfectly crisp, filled with melted Oaxaca cheese and scented with epazote, and served with a tangy habanero romesco. The ceviche campeche was equally impressive: bass and octopus with avocado and cucumber over a bed of avocado mousse, accompanied by blue corn tacos. Two of us ordered the Cubana torta with spicy fries. The roasted pork, Nueske ham, pickles, and Swiss cheese came together on a perfectly griddled roll. However, the chilaquiles rojos our friend chose were less successful--once the fried egg, crema, and avocado were gone, what remained was a plate of tortillas drenched in red sauce. Still, this Yucatán-inspired spot is a gem--and to top it off, our wonderful server was named Maya!

Three flavors are insane! Make sure you mix your dipping sauces together and put it on EVERYTHING! The lamb is a must have! The flavors will open up your palate in a way you've never experienced ! Ricky and Raul were so kind and knowledgeable! Excellent service! The manager Omar stopped by and was very kind. Ambiance is so beautiful and just enhanced the whole experience ! I'll be back to try those empanadas!

    Marisco en Arroz Negro

This place seems to be highly recommended by people online, so we were extremely excited to try it. We came in around 8:40 p.m., and they told us they were closing soon, so we had about five minutes to put in our order. That wasn't an issue for us--we already knew what we wanted and understood we were coming in a bit late. The main issue was that our food came out undercooked. We ordered the Marisco en Arroz Negro, and some of the shrimp were undercooked--the bottoms were still transparent. We asked the server about it, and they told us, "It's usually fully cooked, but these tiger prawns can be eaten raw." But this dish is supposed to be cooked?? I didn't want to risk it tho. They did offer to remake it for us. Unfortunately, that experience kind of killed the vibe. I understand that mistakes happen, but for a dish that costs $52, you'd expect more care. Maybe it was because we came in close to closing time--I'm not sure--but overall it left a bad impression. Putting that aside and focusing on the food itself: aside from the undercooked seafood, the flavors were good. The crispy black rice was different, and I enjoyed the texture. The seafood tasted fresh. However, there were two major downsides--the dish was way too salty and extremely heavy. You can't finish it without feeling like you just drank a bunch of oil. We also ordered the castacán (pork belly taco). It was good, but overly sour. That said, I really enjoyed the tortilla--it tasted fresh and well made. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. Maybe this was just our experience, but it felt way too expensive for what it delivered and didn't have a wow factor.

CHAAK Kitchen is one of those places you walk into and immediately know you're in for something special. The flavors are bold, layered, and so thoughtfully done. Every dish feels like it was crafted with intention. The proteins were perfectly cooked, and the sauces had that deep, savory richness you can't fake. The atmosphere is warm and modern without trying too hard, and the service was genuinely kind and attentive. You can really feel the pride in everything they bring to the table. If you're looking for food that's memorable, elevated, and still comforting, CHAAK Kitchen is absolutely worth the visit. I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Ask the Community - Chaak Kitchen

What is the noise level? Is it possible to have a conversation with several people at a table?

The noise level is moderate...you can have a conversation with your table.

    Is there valet?

No. This is at the Old Town Tustin area. There are a lot of restaurants and shops in the area.

Is the brunch menu similar to dinner menu?

brunch has breakfast options and lunch plates. Menus are on the website too!

    Is this restaurant kid friendly?

Not really- unless they are food aficionados

    Is the roof always open?

No, but they do like to open every day if they can.

To make a reservation - they ask for you to put your credit card info online to book. Will it charge anything on the card?

No, they won't charge unless you're a no show. They said you can cancel up to 5 minutes before your reservation time and they still won't charge you. They just want a heads up so they're not saving your table for nothing.

Is the outdoor patio dog friendly?

Yes! We have brought our dog there before

Are you able to order food to go?

Only certain dishes are able to be made Togo. A lot of the menu is plated for service and not everything can be made Togo since it might take away from the integrity of the dish.

    Do you sell giftcards?

    Yes we do!

    What's the corkage fee? Thanks

It was $20 last time I was in. I'd check it again when they reopen because a lot of restaurants have been upping these types of charges.

Can you accommodate a party of 8-10 outdoors?

Yes! I'd call the restaurant and ask to speak to a manager though so you could make a pre set menu

Do you have high chairs if I brought my child?

    Yes!

Is there TV's to watch football on sunday's?

Hello! We do not have TVs.

On a Sunday, may we order from any menu, or must we order from the menus available for the hours designated for "lunch," "afternoon," &/or "dinner"? I would like to have a dinner menu item for lunch. Thanks!

I am sure that they don't have some of the dinner items available at certain times, hence the different menu. I know there are some items that are available on both menus. If you want a dinner item, that is in the dinner menu, my suggestion is to… Read more

    Do they have happy hour?

No -- at least they didn't on a Friday afternoon.

Is this a family friendly restaurant and do they have a kids menu?

This is a small plate Yucatán themed restaurant that is good for kids who are open minded. No chicken nuggets on menu. Otherwise, leave the kids at home and enjoy a nice night out with very good food & drinks.

After our party of six chatted over cocktails and preyed on pupus, we moved to a "secret" room tucked in the back of Stowaway and walked into a Belly Of The Beast. The founders and co-owners of Stowaway, Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, created this extension to the tiki bar with a wildly interesting Pinocchio theme and the famed encounter with Monstro the whale all the while serving the same offerings in Stowaway but with also an exclusive limited menu just for this adventure. With its proximity to Disneyland and its Enchanted Tiki Room, with the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture they found a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, tropical trimmings, and nostalgic know-how. How would my belly handle the beastly drinks concocted here!? PURCHASE(S) Gepetto's Last Words ($16.00): Intrigued by the cocktail's name, this elixir was crafted with Fid Street Gin, tangerine, creme de violette, lemon, and cucumber, it was a citrusy refreshing sweet drink that was decorated with bright yellow petals. It was nice, but for whatever reason it just didn't quite hit the spot. [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 4.0 of 5.0 STARS] Onion Rings ($9.00): A decent portion with rings of medium to large sizes, these were hot, dark golden browned, crunchy, and had a slight tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (sweet Maui!) rarely pulled out at times. They were lightly oily while the catsup wasn't needed but used. SERVICE While in Stowaway, we informed our male server to let us know when we were allowed to enter the belly. Once inside and situated, we had the place and bartender to ourselves. After we all perused the menu, we placed our orders, and everything arrived within ten minutes. The rest of the time was spent chatting, picture taking, and our bartender checked in on us also giving a Dole Whip taster. All was casual, chill, and somewhat on island time - aloha and mahalo! PARKING (FREE): They shared a medium-sized private lot with several other businesses who were closed at this time with plenty of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE "Hidden" inside Stowaway which was located within a strip mall, the entire theme was based on the Pinocchio story, the interlude in time spent inside Monstro, and as we entered it felt like the beginning of the Disneyland "Storybook" ride as you road a canal boat into the mouth and sharp teet of a whale. There were several marionettes (appropriate and non-appropriate) that hung from the ceiling and belly walls, along with other Disneyesque memorabilia, a few sitting booths, and a tiny bar at the end of the roo. No natural lighting whatsoever while an assortment of extremely low-lit electric lights and table candles glowed. There were no TVs while I couldn't recall any background music. ATTIRE Although I was actually dressed appropriately for the occasion in an aloha shirt, linen pants, and flip-flops, this place was totally casual, so a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops would suffice. OVERALL Belly Of The Beast was an adventurous fun evening with friends, it left me feeling childlike with the need to watch "Pinocchio", and I couldn't wait to return to try more of their awesome-soundling elixirs. I generally loved all-things Disneyana, and this new wrinkle, albeit probably not approved by the mouse ears brass, caught my fancy. My one drink was tasty but just didn't hit the right spot, the onion rings were very good, the prices were a tad elevated, the atmosphere was awesome, and the service was friendly and professional. They had an extremely limited menu, and there was some doubt whether or not ordering from the Stowaway menu was an option. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $27.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

She provided us a code and explained the time limit along with house rules. We were then told to knock on the door and proceed with the experience. Kudos to the owner as this is the only speakeasy in the OC that has a true speakeasy feel entrance. They had a gentleman open the peephole and ask for the entry code. Once we said the code we entered a really cool mine shaft area. The attention to detail was on point and I was impressed! We were then taken upstairs to a private bar where there are four tables of four so a max of 16. This makes sense as to why reservations are hard to come by. The only ding about seating is you are sat with strangers it is not a private table. Luckily we had a fun older couple at our table so it made the conversation more lively. Otherwise don't go here with an expectation of an intimate/ private date night. They also offer a limited food menu but looked very promising. However, we were here for a night cap so just dabbled in drinks. The bartender had a seasonal menu of 4 cocktails he created. He explained the drinks and then had us try each one with a straw. We then placed our order based on what we liked. He did say if we were not a fan he could create us our own personal cocktail as well. The old fashion he created was phenomenal! Overall, a cool little spot in the OC. Do wish they were open later as they do close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

I remember someone reached out from the business saying things have changed and got a new KJ thats better and should give it another go. Well 3+ years later I gave it another chance with a group hoping for improvement but instead the experience is just as bad. The sound is terrible. Mics kept cutting in and out and only half the speakers were actually working. Its sad bc there were some really good singers who were pretty much singing without a working mic. I let the KJ (some old white bald guy with a goatee) know and he had this IDGAF response and didnt do anything. The icing on the cake was me buying drinks and waiting for over an hour to get to my song when I noticed I was passed over for people who signed up after me. I let the KJ know to check and he has me on the bottom of the list like I never moved. I explained how I was waiting over an hour and he began to get defensive and tell me basically he cant trust what I say and doesnt remember me. If dude was doing his job properly this wouldn't happen. How hard is it to go down a signup sheet in order. Its crazy. KJ was also bartending and cleaning tables. Man Im never coming back. So many more professional & organized karaoke bars in south OC. Its sad this place is such a disaster for karaoke. The vibe from the patrons are great too. Advice to management/owner: 1. Spend a few hundred bucks and fix your karaoke system. If this was Asian-owned it would have never been an issue because Asians take their karaoke seriously. 2. Get another KJ and get rid of the bald old white dude with the goatee. He is an unhappy person who doesn't like his job and it shows. 1 Star!

When I said "Bar" and "Santa Ana" in the Yelp search - of course it said "Club 616" in the first…read morespot - OF COURSE IT SAID 616!!! I was lucky enough to stumble across this gem of the center of OC when they first opened - and I am proud to be a regular here. I don't know how to go somewhere else - because I feel like the staff are giant gems in this jewel of a spot. Winters is a curator of boozy information that has helped me learn about "gin" and "root beer whiskey" so I can sound like an adult-ish purveyor, when really I know close to nothing except being a willing student to his creations. Dan the Man and Jacob always see me raise my hand in the corner of the bar, like the student I am, and have been willing to fill in the blanks for me when I know I am of thirst, but do not have the words for what to order. Every person working in the well has treated me with kindness - they have taken the time to get to know me, and I will be forever appreciative of how they have taken care of me over the years. But the real joy has been the transformation that this spot has for building a community of people in Santa Ana for real recognizing real. I have been bringing my Dad with me to play pool for the past few years. Sometimes people ask me if he plays professionally, I am terrible, and my skill incline is slow, he is patient and plays with the same level craftiness that the staff offer the cocktails. My Dad is always stoked when we have time to go have a few hours of games at 616 - especially now that there are regulars on 4th street that are excited to see that he is there playing - and they rush to write their names on the chalkboard to challenge him - or beat him in a game they really earned the W. On lazy Sundays, I watch couples sit with their drink, listening to Jazz, and watching my Dad whoop my ass while making amazing shots. I am forever grateful to Memo who sometimes takes a break from his shift behind the bar to give my dad an actual challenge - which allows me the chance to watch my Dad enjoy fellowship around the table. Knowing the table was a relic of the bars former self, and knowing the history that this spot has in Santa Ana is a reminder that so much around us can change - but it is those moments of the crack of the rack, the cheer of getting the combo shot, and the shake of hands when it's over that shows that it's not just about the pool table - but about the energy of a place that is welcoming and curated by people who care about what they do - and care about who comes through their doors. Thank you Jason and Mike B to bringing this to 4th St and supporting the community that was already here - and for building a community for the future. Thank you to Christina and Brandon for always having amazing pictures, decor, and fun events at 616 that help introduce new folks into this great spot. Time is short. Learn about Root Beer Whiskey. Write your name on the Chalk Board. No one lives forever.

Then I had their take on a Mexican seafood cocktail (I hate the original). Amazing. Culinary engineering at its finest. They do some magic to make a clear sauce that has a hint of acid, tomato and horseradish. Octopus. Thinly sliced shrimp. Nate the chef is a master. Top 5 in Oc. The food is basically comfort food married with brilliant technique and execution. A must visit !!!!!

We still enjoyed the food, but the outside lacks ambiance. You cannot hear the music from the outside, the decor is nonexistent, and there aren't any umbrellas available. If you are looking to enjoy the vinyls and the ambiance, sit inside. As for the food, it's mostly very small plates that can be shared, but are small portions, unless you get the limited edition or shared plates. It can get pricey if you try the skewers and appetizers. We got the Bone Marrow Onigiri, Pickled Plate, Pork Belly Skewers, Hanger Steak Skewers, and Scallops, and everything was yummy. I will give this spot another shot and make sure to sit inside before I make up my mind.

A few must try would be the crispy shrimp red rice roll, crispy tofu, green beans, and mala fries for the food adventurers. The crispy dishes are well made with crisp outside with tender flavors on the inside. I was skeptical about the mala fries but it blew my mind. The crispy fries really absorbed the mala flavor and gives a nice kick A few small opportunities, the Ong choy was overcooked and hard to chew. Crab roe was more salty than umami. Would return to try other dishes on the menu!

The best part of Strong Water is the immersive experience you feel sitting inside. We sat in the Captain's quarters which was an intimate spot for great conversation. Our waiter was very friendly and gave plenty of options. We opted for the Crispy Tuna Appetizer which unfortunately was not good at all. The tuna and toppings were okay but the crispy rice tasted like fried fair food almost with the texture of a rice cake. Hopefully, their other dishes are better. For drinks, the waiter helped select the Banana Batida for me which was very lovely! I love how customized the recommendations were. My partner ordered a rum drink which he enjoyed as well. We finished off with a brownie dessert. I really enjoyed the passion fruit puree and kiwi topping. The brownie tasted good but was very dense which isn't my preference. Overall, would recommend. Prioritize the drinks over the food in my opinion
