I came to Frenasia twice in the past year, both times when I was in NYC on business. Renovating a house is hard work, and you definitely need zen moments to relax and breathe. De-stressing is vital. As a result, in going on a drive away from the construction zone, I found myself hungry and craving sushi. I used my yelp app to find Frenasia and I came in. I was by myself and really just wanted to be left alone. I found a nice seat outdoors and ordered a drink and just was able to breathe. Kudos to the staff for picking up on the sense that I was hungry but didn't want to be fussed over, as they were attentive but not obtrusive. I'm telling you, I was in a mood where if anything wrong had happened, I'd have been in tears. I left, and had leftovers to nibble later. A few months later, my mother, dog and I were all back in New York again, dealing with the house. We needed food, and were tired. So, I decided to stop by here with the hopes of getting some carry-out...because we had the dog. After going in and getting some idea of the menu while my mom and said canine waited in the car, a waitress and waiter standing at the hostess stand asked why we weren't dining in. (I guess she could tell I looked tired and was in need of some relaxation). I gestured to the car, saying that the dog was with us. They looked at each other and said that we could bring him in! WHATTT???!!!! I could not believe they were okay with us having the dog with us. Only thing was that we'd have to eat outside, but that was fine by me, outside was where my first experience was. So, after telling my mother, who was just as psyched as I was, we parked the car and came right in with Michael Jackson. His leash affixed to a table, we were able to enjoy our meal and drinks and have a great time. The staff even gave us a little saucer that he was able to drink water on, and we were a happy trio. Get two orders seriously, you'll be gobbling up those so fast. The outdoor seating is pretty nice as well. Being by the water and the pretty lights sets a great summery ambiance. Also excellent drink menu, Lots of good drinks to choose from. I am mainly giving 4 stars because of the super small parking lot. My friend is a vegetarian so it was nice to see that there is a wide variety of rolls for her, so she ordered the sweet potato roll, the avocado roll with sun dried tomatoes, and the vegetable tempura roll. I ordered the seafood dumplings and the Dragon Ball with Spicy Tuna. I loved how the tuna was surrounded by avocado and covered with crunchies. It was totally unique and have not seen this anywhere else before and was perfect with some spicy mayo and ginger dressing for the mixed salad it was served on. Both the mayo and the dressing were on point with the perfect flavor profiles. So, why give 4 stars and not five? Well, when we sat down, we were approached by several servers back to back to take our order and I just needed a few minutes to look at the menu. However, once we got our food, the service pretty much stopped there. We had to try to get their attention to ask for another Saketini and the dressing and mayo. We go this place for lunch or dinner on weekends, it's in the neighborhood therefore it is very convenient. The ambience is nice, the staff attentive, food is good, they have a variety of choices and all of them are tasty. We were running late, so we called and told them we would be there at 7:45 the latest. The woman on the phone said that was fine. We got there at 7:45 and were told there would be an additional 15 minute wait because they were behind on reservations. That was completely fine with us, seeing as how we were late anyway. We decided to sit at the bar to kill time. We didn't end up getting seated until 8:30PM!! which was an hour later than our original reservation time. In this case, we were actually happy we got there late and wished we would have gotten there even later!! After finally being seated, it was about another 15 minutes before they came and took our drink order. And then another 10 minutes went by before they took our food order. They are really bad with customer service because they don't bring you water and NEVER came around to see if we wanted a refill on our regular drinks. The food was EHH. The rice and noodles did not taste good. The steak was pretty good, but the chicken was SO bland and didn't taste like anything at all. Used to be a nice go to spot. Simple bar and easy to access. Great menu with lots of options for appetizers and quick bites. Because of this I didn't mind putting up with a borderline dismissive waiter( slim male with tattoos and a lukewarm attitude) who thinks that putting 1 menu in between two grown adults counts as a form of welcome. He then disappeared to the other end of the bar and began to have a conversation so I had to get my second menu for myself. That's ok. I was there to unwind and drink anyway not chat it up. It was annoying when the food took a while to come out. Longer than the couple that came after us... Worst when the waiter took my soy sauce (which I was using) and gave it to another couple without asking if I was finished. I had to request it back.... sigh..... When I first came here, I thought this Howard Beach restaurant would be another off-Asian restaurant serving cheap sushi to Americans who were drawn in by the gaudy decor. But I was pleasantly surprised. The first dish I must highlight was the tuna pizza. A crispy tortilla topped with tuna sashimi and guacamole serves as a great appetizer. One bite of this and I seriously contemplated whether I should've ordered one all for myself as an entree. The great selection in their prixe fixe menu won me over though. Although small, their 3 flavor sashimi is a great way to sample their deliciously fresh sashimi. I absolutely loved the tornado salmon! A moist cut of salmon ontop of a flavorful heap of noodles! The steak was also delicious and very filling. To finish our meal, we chose the sweet potato tart and fried ice cream. The tart was AMAZING. Who would have thought this under-appreciated combo would turn out so good!? The waterfront view is a nice touch, and an incentive to sit outside. Came here this past weekend and had a subpar experience. First of all for a Saturday night around 8pm the restaurant and bar was pretty much empty. The hibachi tables were full but besides that the place was empty. We were sat in a back corner both away from everything in an empty restaurant which was pretty strange. My fiance and I each got a soup to start which was served with a plastic spoon. If I am going to spend $100 for dinner (which is what our bill was including a $25 bottle of wine) I should be given real utensils. Then when we were ordering our main course my fiance was trying to substitute the tempura crunch out of her roll due to her gluten allergy and the server was not being overly friendly. When the sushi came it was presented very nicely and the taste was average.
