The day before school started, my daughter chose to eat at Umi Sushi because it's her favorite sushi place. She dressed up as a princess and felt like royalty on our lunch date. Employees are kind and generous. We ordered all the season rolls and a Naruto roll (wrapped in cucumber instead of rice, my favorite). We got a complimentary sweet potato roll too. At the end of our meal, one of the owners gave my daughter a Japanese soda for free. It was her first time trying it and she enjoyed it. This has been my long time favorite sushi place. Ordered 2 speciality rolls with eel and they were soaking in watered-down sauce. This caused the sushi to taste soggy and wet. The sushi just fell apart when you pick it up. I'm guessing they were cutting back in the eel sauce, but really disappointed this time. We got free sweet potato roll for spending more than $40, which was appreciated. The rice was also very wet though. The spicy trio roll was still good. No issues there. Will probably revisit in a view months, but I'm hoping this was a one-off experience. read more

I've ate here a couple times over the years, and many times for take out. I continued to order from here because the food is good, and I normally order the Izumi Sushi. After my latest takeout, I think this will be the last. Since the pandemic, year after year, I've seen the portions dwindle and the price increase. I understand inflation, but today's order was the last straw. I don't normally criticize rice portions for nigiri, but if the rice is half the size, to get away with providing less fish, sad. The slice of salmon, yellow tail, and tuna was so thin, that the sushi chef had trouble making smooth cuts. It was my first time seeing such jagged cuts. To hide this, they specifically wrapped it tightly around the rice which is not normal for nigiri. The fish should be topping/laying on top of the hand pressed rice. read more

I really wanted to like this hole in the wall sushi place but when the business put sweet sauces on all the rolls, I get a bit worried. I had like sweet drops on my spicy tuna rolls which was really weird. The caterpillar roll was all right but everything tastes muted and probably means it isn't fresh. I did get the rock shrimp appetizer and it was yummy. But that kind of sauces was put on all my rolls :( Service was decent and people are friendly. Absolutely unbelievable. This is a neighborhood gem because while sitting for dining in- the door absolutely would not stop opening and closing. By the narrow doorway are individual people waiting on ubereats, and pick up orders directly from actual customers. The phone was nonstop ringing with orders. Then on top of it all, by 6pm, there were patrons coming in and it became a wait. Witnessed all these scenes as they unfolded as I heard every name and order that came in. . The point is that yes, it is busy but It is amazing to see the dedication and devotion to this place! The wait time was not short but they all still stood by the doorway to get a seat! I've order here before for take out but this was my first time eating in . The food was prepared quick and the staff are very friendly . It's near St. John's University if you need a reference spot . Right up the block . Prices are reasonable . Also had green tea . I ordered some udon to go and I'll update my review once I taste it . I order from here 1-2x a month and have been doing so for the last 3+ years. My husband gets the chicken teriyaki dinner EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. He also always gets the tuna avocado roll, which isn't on the menu so if you are ordering online, order the tuna roll and write "tuna avocado" in the notes or call them. My fav special roll (which I always order) is the lobster tail roll, it is so good 10/10. I've tried a majority of their special rolls, and they're all good- but the lobster tail roll is my fav. I also enjoy the spicy trio roll which is mixed spicy yellowtail, tuna and salmon, I get it without the crunchies on top. Another one I def recommend trying is the volcano roll with the baked crab on top- deliciously unique. The mango roll, spicy girl roll & crispy tuna roll are also great. If you're pregnant, I recommend the spicy shrimp roll, it is cooked and so yummy!! I often get the shrimp gyoza (steamed, you have to request it if you don't want it fried) and/or the shrimp Shumai. We never eat in bc it is a smaller restaurant, but we do often pick up and the staff are super friendly and our order is always ready, pretty quick. If you order through Uber Eats, you get a free spicy crab roll with $40 order, but if you don't select this or order a diff way, they usually give a free sweet potato roll, which is also nice. I'm not really a fan of the sweet potato roll, or the spicy crab roll, for that matter, but I appreciate that they look out for their customers. read more

Ordered through Doordash and it was quick! I really appreciated getting a free sweet potato roll on the house! That was a really nice gesture. I got the bulgolgi dinner box and tonkatsu entree, along with the tokyo roll and sweet shrimp sushi. Everything was decent but I was truly disappointed in their Sashimi Regular. It's 18 pieces but the size was extremely small and thin. You could've put at least two together to equal one piece. For $25, I expected a lot more. The tonkatsu was definitely crispy enough but I felt that it was too dry if it was not for the sauce. I think I would give this place another shot and I would recommend ordering rolls, including special rolls instead of sashimi. I hear that their lunch specials are a good deal as well. We've been coming to this restaurant for the past several years, ever since my daughter, U-Mi recommended it. My daughter, U-Mi and her mom used to love U-mi's foods. Now, we only come here occasionally because U-Mi and her mom are no longer around. I've been satisfied with everything overall, except that some of the food isn't always fresh-especially the raw salmon in the SALMON DON. Occasionally(about 1 out of every 4 orders), the raw salmon hasn't been fresh. I had to cook the raw, smelly Pieces because I didn't want to waste food. I ordered an avocado salad, fried soft shell crab appetizer & the "new mango roll". The salad was fine, the crab was ok, but it wasn't too much crab meat in it. I really enjoyed the mango roll which consisted of salmon with avocado on the inside, topped with spicy tuna, mango & wasabi aioli. The mango adds another layer of flavor that is surprisingly good! I've been coming to Umi Sushi for years, yes YEARS.. (after getting married to the birth of my 2 children).. and it's always been our fave go-to sushi spot! Although we've moved further away, we still go back every now and then to satisfy our sushi cravings!!! Their sushi and other food are always delicious and FRESH, definitely great price for the value. Service is quick, but sometimes when they are busy, they will give you a good timeframe for the wait. And the staff is super nice, friendly, welcoming, courteous, and attentive!!! Everything is nothing but fantastic for us at all times! This used to be my regular Go To for sushi because of the fresh fish and generous portions. I occasionally ate in but usually had it delivered. I'm speaking in the past tense because they have dropped their standards. Times ate hard for everyone, especially restaurants even if they did take PPE money. But just raise your prices rather than insulting your customers with blatantly skimpy portions. Maybe they can save money by not wasting so much on plastic. Every tiny thing is in a different plastic container. Plus they send out 2 medium plastic containers of soy sauce for each and every item. Also, they give away mushy sweet potato sushi rolls with dinner orders. I tried to eat them a couple of times. Now they just go into the garbage can as soon as I see them since I keep rejecting the idea of giving them away to unsheltered people. Take a look at these photos. These short, skinny, scraps cuts are an immediate visual turn-off. But I will give them credit for including 8 of these tiny pieces instead of 6. But mouthfeel & texture matter & you lose that with slim, short pieces. And it's not like I ordered a lunch special. At least the mackerel was longer even if it was really skinny. At least my Tamago was a normal size. This place can get packed with families on certain evenings, so I know they're popular. But I'll be trying out some new places that I had written off because they cost slightly more. read more

For a mommy daughter date I decided to bring my daughter here since we have never had it but have always passed it. Inside is small and cozy very intimate. For drinks I had a green tea and my daughter had a cranberry juice. We were given complementary miso soup we both aren't really a fan however the gesture is what really counts. For appetizer we ordered the Tempura which came with 2 pc shrimp and the rest veggies. The shrimp were a great size, long and we both really enjoyed it. I think the only one we did not like was the potato. Most of veggies were also good but of course we enjoyed the shrimp more. We also had the Shrimp Gyoza which was fried and so good. I asked for eel sauce, the eel sauce here is like honey not what I am used to and I didn't like it very much however I am a sauce person so I need sauce! For rolls we picked 3 Peanut & Avocado Roll now the peanuts in this roll are whole which for me I didn't like I would prefer a rough chop or something else, Lobster Tail Roll so good flavorful and great in size and a Spicy Tuna Roll this roll was basic nothing special but tasted so good they allowed the tuna to shine and my daughter loved it surprisingly. Our server then gave us a complementary mango roll that was also good to try it didn't have a mango taste we were grateful for this also. Me and my husband came here for lunch it was super nice service with green tea refills! We had the nicest waitress! Received a complimentary sweer potato roll with our order and it was really scrumptious and savoury! I had the Tokyo roll and Bayridge roll with spicy mayo on top! I had the Bayridge roll twice it is so delicious with cream cheese salmon avocado and masago on top! My husband. My husband ordered a Yoshi roll (shrimp tempura in the middle with spicy tuna on top) - He also ordered a Volcano roll which looked absolutely delicious and he liked this roll the best part it had salmon tempura on top and california roll in the middle - would definitely come back here again. They had decent prices. Did not get a stomach ache from here been getting that lately from sushi in Long Island. Queens NY is the go to for good sushi it seems. OMG - this might be our #1 sushi spot across the nation, no joke! We went as a small group of four, was seated quickly, ordered and food came out quickly, and absolutely fell in love with Umi Sushi. Usually at sushi places we would get a ton of signature rolls but at Umi Sushi, even their basic rolls (especially the tuna and salmon) are ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! From what I heard, they are coming out with a new menu. There are no more lunch specials. Over 40+ special rolls to choose from. Tried the Gentleman Roll: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, cucumber, scallion, rolled in a light green soy paper, drizzled with a spicy sauce. A nice combination of flavors. New Mango Roll: salmon, avocado inside topped with spicy tuna, sliced mango with wasabi aioli tuna roll. The mango is a good addition. A few people mentioned getting a free roll with purchase of over $20. I didn't get any extra roll, just so you know. Popped into Umi sushi for lunner lol (although I guess it was technically just a very early dinner). Despite the odd time we chose to drop in, there were still a decent number of parties dining in! Service was friendly and pretty attentive (it's a small joint to begin with). We split an order of edamame to start between two people. Sometime I really hate the edamame served at restaurants because its not hot/fresh or bad quality, but it was very good here! For my main I'm not a huge specialty roll gal so opted for a few classic rolls: spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura. They also include their house rolls free of charge-- I think this is sweet potato if I'm not mistaken. The rolls were pretty solid, especially for the price. If I lived closer I'd probably do takeout here pretty regularly. read more

My reliable neighborhood sushi. It's always fresh and when I make a big order they usually add in sweet potato rolls for free which always melts my heart. Love the udon noodle soup with the tempura, it's like a nice comfort meal and I have gotten spicy tuna rolls and shrimp tempura rolls year after year.
