A bit too intense for my personal taste. I honestly wish they offered milk on the side so I could dilute it, as I wasn't able to finish it. One more stop on our Asheville trip was a stop at the French Broad Chocolate Factory. We were hoping to catch a tour before leaving town, but when we arrived the cashier told us there were no tours offered on the weekend, because they do have any production going. That being said, she did tell us we could walk up through the halls and take a "self guided tour". We could see into the production space and there were lots of signs and descriptions of what went on at each step of the process, as well as where they get their raw ingredients from and the relationships they have with the farmers in foreign countries. It was interesting to learn about, and see all that goes into the process. The self guided tour was free, the guided tours have a cost ($12 I think), but I believe also come with some sampling. The factory is very large, high ceilings and well lit, and obviously from what we could see of the production space, it was very clean! As far as the store, they offered a variety of bonbons, and candy bars, and hot chocolate mixes. Though they are a bit pricey, just beware of this when planning your visit. For example individual bon bons are $3 each, a 6 pack is $20. Yes, they are fine, hand made chocolates, but it certainly is not something everyone can budget for. read more

I've had French Broad Chocolate many times but this was my first time at the factory where it is made. Tours are offered here on certain days to see how it is done. The area where the factory is located suffered damage from Helene and the factory was closed for a while but they are back up and running now. The parking lot isn't very big so if you are planning to stop for a tour, I'd suggest arriving a little early. The tour begins in the education/tasting room and you get a history about chocolate and even get to try samples. Then we got taken to watch the process from the cocoa beans to the final products. If I remember correctly, it takes 18 hours from start to finish. You can still watch and see how things are done even if you aren't on the official tour as they have information boards up to read as you go. The shop in the front of the store had more products than I had seen at the downtown location. I was thrilled to find the peppermint bark and I had ordered for Christmas there. I loved it and tried to order more online but it wasn't available. I got some for me and some for gifts. I bought a little bit of everything so have plenty of chocolate for a while to last until I make it back for another purchase. read more

They do have a self guided tour that is free so we were still able to see the process and learn a little. We of course had to try the chocolate and it was amazing. To be honest, we booked this on a cold day, just looking to do something indoors. But - what a great surprise!!! The tour was educational and interesting, with a tour leader who was very knowledgeable. I learn so much about chocolate, from cacao harvesting, to how it's transformed into the delicacies I love so much. I was worried this would be a "kid's tour" and this 60 year old would be bored, but quite the opposite is true - it's great for adults, and maybe a bit too informational for the little ones. It was recommended to me by a friend as a "cant miss" (thank you Robyn) and she was right! I will pass the recomendation to all of you, try it! They have a dark chocolate one too. We took a tour on Friday afternoon (10/29) with Victoria. I've attended more chocolate classes/pairings/tastings/etc. than I can count, but I learned so much on this tour! I had no idea about the little bugs that pollinate the flowers or the monkeys who break open the pods. So interesting! Anyway. The factory tour was a pretty standard factory tour, but it was cool to see the assembly line in motion from start to finish. I love that so many of the workers there have been there from the beginning or close to the beginning, and I love seeing the company grow and evolve over time. Victoria was an excellent guide. She was clearly well rehearsed and knew her script, but put her own - very fun - spin on things. We had a staff member on the tour and she also provided some fun insight as she was able to see things from both sides. So cool. We visited the downtown spot the next day (separate review) but they basically offer most of the same things at both spots, with more pastries available downtown. I took a group of high school boys on this tour and was pleasantly surprised with the patience, kindness and knowledge of the staff. Right from the start, staff knew we were on the tour and made sure to get us our discount. We grabbed a delicious snack as we arrived early. They don't have as much as the shop but they have plenty of amazing options here ranging from brownies and cake to coffee and ice cream. There is a picnic table outside but sadly it was occupied. It's much nicer to be outdoors with a group of kids and/or during pandemic. Ps they had great protocols in place. Eric was our guide and he was a delight. He intros himself to me first and we did some chatting about the kids. During the tour, everyone was engaged. They asked questions and we sampled some great chocolate. I am SO excited about this new location. I have been hearing for a long time that they would be opening in the RAMP studios and was looking forward to it. I went to an awesome art opening one weekend and was pleased that they were servings all different types of chocolates for French Broad Chocolate Lounge. I walked to the end of the building to see that the factory was open! And how cool, because when we walked in, the glass windows gave us a view to a gentleman working on the chocolates in the factory! I love watching stuff be made. Especially sweets. The new space is open and inviting. I love that there are different floor levels, it gives it a playful vibe. They are filled will all of the things that everyone loves about French Broad such as liquid truffles, macaroons, coffee, and so much more! We came here for the chocolate tour and left with so much more! They offer a tour twice a day, and when we were there, there were 8 on the tour. We felt spaced and very safe. The tour starts in the classroom, where we heard the story behind French Broad's start, interwoven with how chocolate is harvested and made. Then we got to sample a few different levels of cacao percentages in chocolate bars. Lastly on the taste tour was a bon bon, which our group actually got to pick since the other group on our tour was late. It was a hazelnut one which was great tasting! Then we walked around the factory and saw the process in action. We were there on a weekend, so no workers were actually working on the floor, which was a bummer, but no big deal. FBCF is full-service, full-on chocolate. this place literally reeks of chocolate in it's various stages and processes... kind of a good problem to have. from the bean bag to the gift bag they do it all: clean, roast, grind, refine. with a case full up with chocolates, confections, and associated consumables plus hot, cold, and packaged fermented beverage along plenty of chocolate-themed kitsch and clothing options. Well placed and abundant signage and video loops to inform the curious about the business of the business. tours are rumored and most of the goings on are viewable behind the safety and security of glass windowery - but not today. alas, today we are not allowed near the glass :-( and we are tsk-ed for even nosing about and shopping while tucking into a blueberry mousse cup. we had a satisfactory visit despite the plague and managed to secure refreshments and a few novelties. perhaps we will see improvement when the pandemonium subsides... meanwhile all the standard and customary plague protocols are firmly but politely enforced and curbside pick-up is encouraged if you can. read more

Which we all know can be achieved from any supermarket Real chocolate bar. At 3.00 for a chocolate smaller than a quarter this would be a hard pass for me.
