First of all, this is not mexican food at all. Our first time here and our experience was terrible, definitely just bad. We ordered a chicken torta, a quesadilla and a "mini" taco. - The torta we got was made with bolillos from Heb and you can barely see any chicken and the taste was just not good, oh and the price 14.00 for that? - The quesadilla was the simplest quesadilla I ever had, and if you don't know how to make a quesadilla then I don't know what to tell you, please really? - Let's talk about the chicken taco, the taco was just small and barely any chicken for 5 dollars? My waitress was so funny and cool during our stay! She went the extra mile by not only recommending nightlife, but writing it all down on a piece of paper for us! I didn't catch her name but I appreciate her so much for that. The food was amazing too; I'd never heard of green apple guacamole but it was honestly amazing (and I'm a picky eater). Came here after the gym with a buddy mine the other day. I am always wanting to try new food, but I rarely go out for breakfast so I was pretty excited. My pal and I were fixated on breakfast tacos so we headed here to Fresa's. First thing we realized was that there was no inside area so beware if you're looking for a sit down place. The good thing is there was no line and it was a nice morning out so we got up and ordered super quick then were able to sit out on the back of my truck and enjoy our tacos. I had the Lorenzo and Tomas, both of which were recommended by the employee who served us. They are both really good and avocado on a taco is killer. The only problem is our breakfast was gone in about 2 minutes. These were quite literally the smallest tacos I have ever seen in my life. They were about the half the size a taco you would get elsewhere and at $3.5 a pop it was just ridiculous. I did enjoy the food and if I had the stomach of a very young child this may have worked, but I would've needed at least 6 of these to make a dent in my stomach. Been driving past this place for years and keep meaning to pop in and try it out. Finally was downtown and was able to stop in. There is only outdoor minimal seating or a drive thru. So it was not ideal on a hot summer day, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to finally try it out. There is a good menu selection, as little as a bite to eat for one person or a whole meal to feed a family. Since it was lunch I opted for the smaller options I got a taco, Brussels sprouts and the corn. The corn was definitely my favorite, the taco was not my favorite though. The Brussels Sprouts were good at first, but then after so many it got real heavy and almost tiring to eat it. I would say you have to share that with at least 3 people or more. The street corn was delicious and messy. There are so many other options I would come back and try. I think the chicken would be a good one and dessert. First timer here. Sat outside since we had our pup with us. The frozen margaritas are pretty good but fairly small in my opinion for the price. The price varies on which flavor you choose, so I'm guessing they put real fruit it? We started off with the street corn. You get it cut in half on the Cobb and it was yummy. Wasn't too burnt for being roasted. We shared the Yucatán Spice Chicken (half size) and it was good enough to share! Everything was soooo good on that plate and very authentic. So I went through their drive through, first in line. The person taking my order was polite. As I got to the window a gentleman aggressively threw the drinks at me, I asked for napkins and he told me there were some already in the bag. There was one. I asked for more and he rolled his eyes. As he gave me the bag of food, I looked through it quickly to realize that one of my tacos is missing. I waved him down and at this point a line was forming behind me. He asked me if I was sure there was not 2 tacos. I showed him the bag and he asked his employees and again, asked if I was sure.... I showed him the bag again and he did not look happy. I waited about 5 minutes and asked for salsa, he gave me one and slammed the window. What a d.... Food: 2 brisket tacos Elote Brisket tacos were okay, needed more salsa but didn't have enough. Elote I will say I really enjoyed. It was smokey but creamy and tangy! Would come back for those. Hadn't the service been so awful, this place would've earned more stars. My brother took me here for the first time for a quick bite. I was surprised I had never been nor heard of this place. It is walk-up window order or drive thru, but there is a little bar w/stools to sit at in front of the window where you order. Very hipster, GF, Vege/Vegan friendly menu and the prices reflect that. They are known for their tacos, but I wasn't feeling any of their options, so I got a weird combo of things and maybe that was my fault. We got brussel sprouts, chips w/the poblano ranch, and street corn. The b-sprouts were pretty tasty and the chips and ranch were awesome (the chips actually hold up, had a bunch left to snack on the next day). The street corn was a bit disappointing, however. It had a weird flavor to it and was a bit over-charred. I used to love the street corn we'd get in Nogales, but have not found the real deal here in ATX yet. Might come back if I'm in the vicinity and actually try some of their tacos at some point. read more

Definitely recommend giving Fresa's a try if you want a tasty, healthy option. I wanted to try something tasty on my last day in Austin while also eating healthy after a long weekend and Fresa's was the perfect solution. I got the chicken al carbon taco and the power bol. I liked the chicken in the taco, it was really moist and had a good flavor. The rest of the taco was decent as well, not the best taco I had all weekend but it was pretty good. The bowl was also decent, not the best thing I ate all weekend but good and healthy. I liked the dressing it came with, and especially liked the salsa that was served with the taco. The bowl was on the smaller side, so be aware of that, but a nice healthy option nonetheless. I want to come back and try the brussel sprouts and churros, I've heard they are good. This place was recommended so much so me and friend decided to try it out for me it was a bit pricy for some basic food. Me and my friend both got the La Gringa quesadilla you get a side of sour cream and a side of some green salsa to me the quesadilla was missing flavor the sour cream definitely made it taste better I really wasn't a fan of the green salsa it had a weird taste not really the salsa I am used to. Overall, the food was pretty good but a little overpriced. (Tracks with Austin) My favorite was the kale salad and flautas. The salad had really great flavors. Mine had roasted cauliflower on it which wasn't listed on the menu. No complaints from me as it was really good. The chicken flautas were crispy, not dry. They look small but filling. The loaded queso was okay. There isn't much chorizo but to be fair my daughter ordered it without pico and salsa so it is probably better with. My least favorite was the taco. The brisket was so dry we could barely swallow our bites. I didn't finish it and would not order that again. The aqua fresca was pretty good too. Prob 3.5 stars. I'll bump it up to 4 just because it's a drive thru that serves beer and wine (and also margarita mix). Chicken Torta was okay; I expected it to be better with all the reviews about it. Winner was the beans. I tried the #1 chicken meal (quarter chicken) and it was good but only enough for 1 person at ~$12. So a bit pricey. Good flavor to it though and it comes with rice, beans, 2-3 tortillas and salsa. Also have been a fan of drive thrus that aren't the typical fast food spots. So much easier when you have a child you have to get in and out of car seat! read more

After years of driving by and wondering what this big blue building was for, I'm ecstatic that I finally tried fresa's delicious food! I love the concept of the walk up window or drive through with the surrounding tropical plants and decor- it truly made me feel like I was on vacation in Mexico. On top of this, my favorite frank Sinatra song was playing as I walked up to order, making me all the more merrier during my first experience here. The el presidente taco was perfectly filling and deliciously satisfying. The chicken is cooked so tenderly and juicy with many great flavors. The style that fresa's prepares their chicken is excellent! I want to come back and try the plates, salad, breakfast, and ice cream. So much to try and so little time! read more

Drive through is usually pretty quick but tricky to get in as it's next to Shiners saloon. They're usually out of the beef by the time I get there, so if you want that get there early! Super delicious food!! I think it's a little pricey, but given the location, it is understandable. This location is only a walk-up location and there are a few seats outside, but no indoor seating unfortunately. The queso is really good, and their quarter white chicken is delicious as well. Their rice and beans were so so.. but my favorite was the roasted Brussels sprouts with an AMAZING aioli. What is in that aioli?? I have no clue but it was so so so good. I am so sad and it honestly pains me to leave a place I loved for so long an unfavorable review. Fresa's used to be SO good, but it the quality, care and value have crashed and burned. I've ordered about five times from the South Lamar location over the past few months because I loved this place so much I just wasn't willing to give up on them, but each time the food was worse than the last. The breakfast tacos are now comically small, which I would accept because of rising food costs, however they're also terrible and you can see and taste the absolute lack of care. The eggs had clearly been sitting for hours and were mostly crusty pebbles that literally crunched when I bit into them and the tortilla was old and rock hard. Their breakfast tacos used to be incredibly good, but these were so awful they should not have been served to anyone and I actually threw them away. I ordered from Fresa's for the last time last night. We threw away the beans which came with the achiote chicken which were so acrid, burnt and dry they were inedible. We also ordered fried shrimp that were also so wildly overcooked that, no exaggeration, I could not bite through them. I tried to salvage them to put on a tortilla in hopes of making a crappy little rubber shrimp taco, but when cutting them with SCISSORS was a struggle I just tossed them. The four tiny shriveled shrimp had also not been cleaned so they were full of gross black goo, which at Fresa's premium price point is just not okay. Our order for two came to $95, everything was laughably tiny, and the only thing good were the churros. I am so hoping they hire new management who actually care or retrain their cooks. They had such great food for so many years, I know they can get it together and deliver good food again! read more

La Fresa, yummmm!! It was a big, fresh, delicious taco on a great corn tortilla. It was $4.25 I think, but it was a good size for a weekday lunch. I could eat more if I didn't have to work after. The crispy Brussels sprouts were huge, and delicious, but pretty greasy. I've got a tiny queso waiting on me at the office. I have high hopes. I had the lime agua fresca, which was yummy. It's really close to my office so I'll certainly be back. I do wish they had more shade up front so you could eat without being in the scorching sun. read more

Went to eat and they said they couldn't seat me because I did not make a reservation and were full until 9:00 pm despite clearly seeing three open tables and one more group leaving as I was speaking to the staff. They were counties and not rude but would have been nice to sit at one of the many open tables outside. For $6 tacos, they got the order wrong and when I asked for extra salsa, they basically wouldn't give more even when I was handing cash to buy it. Pretty argumentative if they want return customers. This review is really just about the Horchata - surprisingly there's not that many places to enjoy this delicious beverage in Austin. Fresas is one of the options I found in my area. The drink had a great balance of sweetness and spice, was a fair price, and can be picked up quickly in the drive through. I've had Frescas several times and it's always a go-to for me if I want something flavorful and healthy. I really like the Super Bol and I'm not even a Kale person. Visited Austin for a day for an interview. It was lunch time and it was pouring down rain. Fresa's seemed like the perfect place because I could drive through and pick up food without getting out of the car. I have been living in Georgia for a while (originally from Houston) so good Tex-Mex or Mexican food is very hard to come by. Everything on Fresa's menu looked amazing and I wanted to try it all. So I got a little bit of everything. Here is what I ordered: La Fresa taco El Rey taco Crispy brussels sprouts w/ pasilla aioli Queso w/ chorizo Classic guacamole Tea w/ agave nectar There weren't any other patrons there at this time on a Friday lunch hour, but I attribute that to the rain. It was really bad!! I waited quite a while for my order, but I ordered a lot. And, to be honest, I wasn't bothered by it because that told me they were making it fresh. I'm sure they thought I must be bringing back all this food back to the office or something (I was dressed in my interview attire) but nope, it was alllll for me. They handed me a huge paper bag that contained everything I ordered plus 2 big bags of chips. Points for completeness of order. Since it was raining so hard, they couldn't exactly go over everything with me, so I just had to drive off trusting everything was in there. However, if your business is all take away orders, I don't know, maybe you should include napkins and plasticware with the order. Or at least ask if I need any. Maybe I was wrong to assume there were already some in the bag. But maybe they were wrong to assume I didn't need any and didn't bother to ask. I had to eat in my car with my bare hands (namely brussels sprouts) and wipe my mouth and hands on the paper bag like a homeless person. I looked like a ravaging raccoon going through the dumpster!! Anyhoo, on to the quality of the food... the guacamole was fine. Just your typical guac. It could've used just a smidge more salt for my taste. But I don't blame them. You dont want to add too much and offend everyone. Best to add just enough and people can adjust to suit their needs. I didn't have any salt packets in my car though. The queso with chorizo was really lacking chorizo. It barely had any all, but the flavor was really amazing. The crispy brussels sprouts with pasilla aioli were anything but crispy. And I get it, they've become soggy because they've been sitting in a paper box for a while. But, that's your business model, right? Everything is take away and can't be eaten immediately. So, how would they be crispy? And the pasilla aioli was just bland and didn't add much to the already soggy sprouts. The El Rey taco was supremely disappointing. For a chicken place, I thought this would be their shining star. It was so dry, I had to drench it in sauce to choke down the first couple of bites. The corn tortillas did not help. I couldn't even finish this taco. And this is something a lot of folks don't get about corn tortillas when it comes to tacos. You can't just warm them up, you have to heat them up in a little bit of oil just to get them to that almost crispy stage, then stop. Because you do not want it crispy. You want it pliable. Sure it adds more calories. But it works and it's not bone dry anymore. My mexican grandmother does this when she makes tacos. I've never seen anyone else do that. The El Rey taco, on the other hand... OMG!! This taco was AMAZING!! I ate every single bite. There are no other words but yum!! Tea is tea. All in all, it was convenient, it has better food than other drive thru places so I'm probably being a smidge unfair in my critique. But on the whole, it's not an all around bad place. I had heard a lot about Fresas so I was excited to try them, but was incredibly disappointed. First off, the service was pretty poor. I ordered 8 tacos and two sides and it took over 30 mins. After three different groups who ordered behind me got their food, I finally asked and was told they had no order in my name. I showed them my receipt then waited another 10-15 minutes before I got the food. I asked them for utensils, they said they were in the bag but of course they were not. And at no point did they apologize for how long it took. I ordered two of each taco (one for me, one for my wife) and two sides, the brussel sprouts and the beets. The beets and brussel sprouts were the best things we got, and the sauces they came with were really good. The brisket taco was really, really good. The shrimp taco was good. The two chicken tacos were flat out bad, which is crazy considering chicken is supposed to be their specialty. The chicken was really dry, like so dry I needed to drink water to get it down. Then there was the price, which was crazy to me. It really wasn't a ton of food and yet it came out to over $50!! I'm used to taco trucks in Oakland where you can feed 10 people for $50. read more

Another bad day at Fresa's Lamar. Pretty much every visit in the past few months, they've gotten my tortilla wrong, the tacos are cold, or I have to wait a ridiculous amount of time while their staff hangs out talking. Some of the boy employees are playing basketball with the bags of chips before they're delivered to me...with plenty chips broken. Time to retrain your staff. read more

We are longtime patrons of Fresa's. We typically order online and pick up to eat at home. After our last dinner at Fresa's we both said, "eh, everybody has a bad night" and wrote off the haphazard assembly, scant ingredients in our tacos and overly greasy brussell sprouts to a one-off. Tonight, our tacos were half the size (did they not think we'd notice?) of tacos we've enjoyed in the past. Not only were they half-filled but the actual size of the tortillas were diminished by 30%. As usual I ordered the brussel sprouts. The box contained maybe 5 pieces of actual "stabbable" sprouts with the remainder of the box filled with just greasy leaves. What a disappointment. If memory serves, the tacos that come in corn tortillas are double wrapped as they tear easily. Not tonight. It must be single corn tortilla night. When we first started going there, we decided two tacos and a salad was "too much food" for us. After our sad meal from Fresa's tonight we were scrambling for a snack to round out the meal.
