Fresh Salt is more bar than restaurant, evident by the "no table service after 4PM" signs. That means you have to go up to the bar to order your food. No worries, you don't have to completely do all the work as they still bring the food to your table. As for the food, it was delicious and everything tasted indeed fresh. Mushroom Quiche ($8.00) - Steaming hot mushrooms with melted cheese surrounded by flaky pastry crust. I could eat a whole pie of this. Absolutely amazing (9/10) Home-made Mac & Cheese ($8.00) - The mac was a bit bland but it wasn't too hard or soft. Just eat it when the cheese is still melted. (6/10) Salt Sandwich ($11.00) - Spec was the star of this sandwich. The bartender described spec as a "better bacon." That's all I need to know. The spec and bread was very crispy and a crunch echo with every bite. Also there was a nice smoky flavor without the burnt flavor normal bacon would have when it gets to that level of crispness. (9/10) Homemade Meatloaf Sandwich ($10.00) - The meatloaf was very moist and seasoned well. Another great sandwich. (8/10) Even though it is half self-serve, I got better and friendlier service here than most restaurants. While attending the patrons at the bar, the bartender took our orders, brought us our orders, and joked with us with her comment about "food porn" when I was taking pictures of food. read more

Fresh Salt is very small, but has creative food and a good vibe. Only slightly off the beaten path, Fresh Salt is in an old fish market building. I came with my family on a Saturday night before the nearby outdoor movie (free popcorn, a Men In Black impersonator, fun times). They don't have wait staff after four, so we ordered at the bar and had the food delivered to our table. I had a really solid pork sandwich and enjoyed nibbling on everyone else's food too. Not crowded, not loud. A little outdoor seating is available. Overall a solid choice! read more

Came here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon. Overall food wasn't too bad. Ordered eggs any style on the brunch menu for $13. It comes with a drink of your choice. I had eggs over easy with speck (mix of prosciutto with bacon) - sounded interesting but texture was tougher than I expected. Toast had parts of it that was good. Otherwise it was overlooked in certain sections. Eggs over easy were made perfectly! Ambience is nice and relaxing with dimmed lighting and great oldies music. I have a mixed perspective on Fresh Salt. Pros: The happy hour deals are really good (4-8PM), the location in seaport is nice, and the drinks are good. Cons: Our service was rather slow and inattentive. Also, I unknowingly ordered something that didn't count under the happy hour prices, but the wait staff did not inform me that I would be charged basically 3x the happy hour price for the drink. This place confused me... its very small and quite dive-y, but they only have three beers on tap and have a bunch of fancy signature cocktails. A friend and I came towards the end of happy hour. I was looking forward to getting some happy hour beer, but since they only have three options and none appealed to me, I opted for a glass of wine instead. I'd read that the food here is good so we decided to try some sandwiches for a casual dinner. I got the eggplant sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and it was actually awesome and really filling. It seems that the food is the best thing about this place. After happy hour ended I decide to try one of their signature cocktails, the Beekman. It was pretty good but nothing special... this isn't really a place I'd choose if I wanted to drink cocktails. They have a lot of tables but no table service after lunch so you have to go order all food and drinks at the tiny crowded bar which is not easy. I love Sam he's the bartender/server who I've had the pleasure of assisting me every time I go in. He makes recommendations and serves up a great smile Atmosphere: quaint and rustic dark and noise level varies on the night and amount of people but nothing too crazy. Food: I've had the pleasure of having the Cavatappi Mac and cheese with Soppressata which I loved (I asked for a crispy crust and they got it right I've had the artichoke dip with pita chips which was yummy I had a loaded pita which was okay not sure I'd order again and lastly the goat cheese and rosemary quiche which I didn't fancy. Drink: Happy hour is from 4pm-8pm which I love and they have a great Montepulciano (red wine) that's $6. During happy hour and pairs well with a lot of the dishes I've had. Cute and simple, Fresh Salt a great place to stop in and have a drink or a bite to eat. I had their tuna salad on pita bread with a side of homemade sea salt chips, it was very good! The tuna was very tasty, it could have used just a tad more mayo; the pita was nice and fluffy so all together it was a solid tuna sandwich. The chips were lite and super crunchy, I really enjoyed them, they come in several flavors too. Great place whether you're on your lunch break or in the area. read more

I've heard really good things about fresh salt and wanted to check them out since I work in the area. I stopped in for lunch one day, the atmosphere is cute, it trendy while maintaining an intimate setting with a bar in front and limited seating in the restaurant (its small inside). There are also a few table outside of people want to enjoy the nice weather. I had the eggplant sandwich and the mac and cheese. Portions were just right for the price and the food was fresh and well seasoned. The woman at the front desk who helped me was very nice and I would definitely go back again. An ideal neighborhood spot, just as good for walk in brunch as it is for uncrowded late night drinks. The lack of crowds don't make it any less cool. At brunch the croissant sandwich with thick cut (seriously thick!) bacon is my go to. Late at night for that last on-your-way home drink sit at the bar with the regular who knows the bartender. It's a nice quiet spot that, after 4pm, you can walk in and literally do your own thing. You order your meal and poison at the bar, find your own seat and soak in the atmosphere at your own pace. Sat 11:30 AM brunch $13 brunch for every entree + small salad. It was filling, service was nice & quick, and homely decor. The place isn't large but despite being the weekend, we were seated immediately. 4 stars because I wish they expand their menus. I came here for a small birthday drinks. I liked the food (had a pita dip) ambience and seating of this place. Around midnight it wasn't packed but it wasn't empty either which was nice. The music was on point, too, contemporary hiphop played at a volume conducive for conversation. I was having a fun time until an interaction with the bartender. She sounded sarcastic and angry in response to my asking for a water refill and ordering a menu item. I felt as if I had stepped into a bizarro world as otherwise the place felt warm and friendly. It was the kind of behavior that my thought instinctively was that if I were a six foot man this would not be happening. As it was, I had to draw on that almost-40 wisdom and disengage from the bad vibes. But for this encounter, I would have given the place four stars. read more

In the harsh light of day, this place looks kinda dumpy - our table had a gaping hole in it. But I could imagine it looking sexier at night, with candlelight and the exposed brick walls. On a Sunday afternoon, we took advantage of their $11.50 brunch which included an entree and a coffee or small drink. I got lox with capers, cream cheese and red onion on a ciabatta roll with a mixed green salad. Nothing fancy here - the food on my plate is exactly how I or anyone would imagine it to be. He ordered the challah French toast, which was really soggy, but fine for $11.50 with a side of fresh fruit. It's a pretty tiny place; including the bar, I'm estimating they can seat about 20-30 people, maybe less? It was fine, and if we're hungry and in the area, we'd probably be back. I'm thrilled to see some establishments in the post-Sandy Seaport area not only come back, but appear to thrive. Fresh Salt is one of those places. I grabbed a table on a recent gorgeous weeknight with little to no expectations, and came away pleased. The first think you'll notice is the tempting seats outside. They appear to be full sit-down service, but are actually self-serve with all ordering done at the bar. The beers on tap are great, summery, and reasonably priced throughout happy hour. The food was mostly sandwiches and light fare, but all tasty looking. It's always a good thing to be conflicted when ordering, and that's what happened here. I landed on the Pepper Turkey, a hearty sandwich with turkey, brie, and thin green apple slices. Very fresh, very summery, very good. A friend I came with ordered the same thing and enjoyed it just as much. The only odd part was the chips. The same sandwiches were served with different chip flavors. I would have appreciated the chance to choice the flavor I wanted, had I known that was even an option. Nonetheless, a minor blip on an otherwise enjoyable meal and experience. If you want to support some of the businesses in the area, and want a light but still filling meal and drink, I recommend stopping by Fresh Salt. read more

In short: Happy hour is great, food is not. Happy hour special: $4 drafts and well drinks, 4-8pm, every day. What did I say? Fabulous. No table service at all and you have to start a tab. Only 3 beers on tap. The food really screams that Fresh Salt is a bar first, and an eatery second. We didn't try the sandwiches - just a soppressata mac 'n' cheese ($9), and a pita melt (because it was $6 and I preferred to spend my money on beer). The pita melt was a college-style toaster oven creation, just boring cheese on boring pita and warmed. The mac n cheese was separating into oil and curd; the soppressata, which I usually like, made it stinky. It just didn't taste good. All served on Corningware. The space is small, dark, and decorated randomly with Christmas lights and rickety chairs. Definitely not what you'd expect from the pristine historical tourist area just outside. On a weeknight, the place actually fills up fast and ~7pm it will become standing room only. read more

Nice atmosphere, whether you choose to sit indoors or out. A relaxing place to escape to in the middle of a hectic work day~ for breakfast, lunch or mid-afternoon snack, everyone seems pretty unassuming and low-keyed here. Our waiter however was not particularly friendly or attentive... ignoring us as we said our thanks and goodbyes. and our food did take awhile to arrive... still, overall the food was yummy and fresh and reasonably priced~ The Humus plate, I might add, is simply to die for here. read more

Sundays near the South Street Seaport don't feel the way they normally do in Manhattan. On the weekends, it's quieter, slower than the rest of New York. Mornings don't feel rushed. That's what makes brunch at Fresh Salt so enjoyable. With exposed brick, varied wood surfaces and an unfinished floor, Fresh Salt feels the way a Seaport café should. Food is simple - omelets, quiche, pancakes, granola - but it's good. Lox served on ciabatta makes for a tasty bagel alternative, and speck is an unexpected side or breakfast sandwich topper. I'd like to review the food at Fresh Salt but I can't because I actually didn't get to eat anything. After 30 minutes of waiting for our brunch on Sunday at 2pm, our waitress (who was clearly on some sort of fun gas/pot) came over to tell us that she forgot to put in our food order... I really think this place had potential but the incompetence of our waitress was beyond inexcusable and made for such an awful experience that I won't ever go back or recommend it to anyone I know. I'm not sure how management in a restaurant could interview her and deem her qualified to speak to the public. When we first sat down, she took our drink orders and proceeded to bring them to us one at at time...first my seltzer, then my bloody mary, then my fiancee's mimosa which he actually didn't order. He ordered a bellini. Our waitress told us she messed that up too. She then proceeded to take it away and bring back the same exact drink saying that she was positive it was in fact a bellini- whatever, it seemed too complicated for her so my fiancee just drank it. After 30 minutes she comes over to our table to tell us she forgot to put in our food order. I think she may have walked by us at least 5x to serve the other 4 tables around us, yes just 4......not an exceptionally cumbersome workload for most people, but apparently it was too much for this girl. Anyway, she said she'll put the order in now, but the eggs may take a few minutes. I asked her for our check for the drinks and left. Her response "but I said I"m sorry"......In a nutshell, potential for good food at this place but whoever the waitress was on Sunday at 2pm needs to be let go. It's a shame there was no manager there on premises that day, perhaps we could have been able to speak to them as I'm sure it's not the first time this employee displayed this level of incompetence on the job. read more

Fresh Salt is my favorite restaurant in the South Street Seaport. It's a block away from all of the madness and has two of my favorite dishes downtown. 1. The Salt Sandwich is delicious, you have to try it. 2. Quiche specials, they come with a small salad and are amazing. It's a great spot for lunch and late night drinks, while I've never gone for brunch I am sure it's pretty good as well. Keep in mind it's a small and cozy spot, so if you have a large group it might take a while to snag a seat. read more

I think the Financial District (and South Street Seaport, by association) gets too much crap for being a dead zone, where all nightlife goes to die. I live down here, so most of the time, when people ask me where I live, I answer, a little embarrassed, :"oh... in the financial district..." usually followed by an explanation that the luxury housing down here is cheaper. But I've definitely seen some major developments over the last few months with restaurants sprouting up everywhere, and made some wonderful discoveries. Fresh Salt is not a recent development by any means, but certainly a delightful tiny bar tucked in the back alleyways of the hateful South Street Seaport. The food is fresh, delicious, and insanely cheap. My favorites include the SALT sandwich ($9) spec, avocado, lettuce, tomato on perfectly toasty ciabatta, and their homemade mac n cheese ($6), with slightly crispy edged noodles lightly covered in cheese. There are only a few drafts on tap but happy hour runs every night from 5-8pm for $4 each, so who cares? Service is definitely a crapshoot though, as it really depends on who's manning the bar that night. On our first visit, I went with a few friends from work. Unfortunately, the bartender was patronizing and downright mean. I hadn't heard when he said 'bar service only' so when we went up to clarify... "yes... that's what bar service means..." But the food was so good that I had to bring my bf back, regardless of the service (and admittedly, because I was "in the know" now). I never really let service determine whether I return to a restaurant or not, but wow, our second visit was MILES from the first. Needless to say, my bf loved the place. This is definitely a place to take a few close friends, nosh on some amazing sandwiches & beers, and forget that you're only steps away from the mobs of tourists that is South Street Seaport. read more

When headed back from a happy Ikea shopping trip - what is one to do for food (besides the Swedish Meatballs with Mash, Gravy and Lingonberry Sauce of course), especially if you want to avoid the horror that is lower Fulton Street. I don't really want to tell too many of you this - because quite frankly the side-streets off lower Fulton really are the haven of the locals, but here goes - head off one street over and you will find a few gems of local liveliness. Fresh Salt mid-afternoon is somewhat sultry and slow moving - perfect when your arms are killing you with the Ugly Blue Ikea Bag. Absolutely cute and friendly atmosphere - old wooden interior with a few whaling harpoons (yeahhhh screw the Japanese Government and its pro-whaling bs! - sorry I digress), old knick-knacks on the walls, brick and wood - all the things that make you want to sit back for an hour or two and relax. The brunch menu was not overburdened - some great tasty sandwiches. My favorite Ikea shopping friend had the roast beef sandwich with a wasabi mayo and I stuck to the mac'n'cheese. All hit the spot perfectly - including my very random English Ginger Beer (which got us talking about making ginger beer when we were kids back in New Zealand and hearing the bottles explode in the middle of summer - very random). Honestly - its not like the place was a mind-blower but it had that something special that makes you want to stay and certainly makes you want to come back. Definitely give it a try. read more

Without a doubt, Fresh Salt serves some of the best sandwiches I have ever had--and there is a definite dive-bar feeling here which just made me fall in love with it even more. The Meatloaf Sandwich is the true star at Fresh Salt. Served on fresh locally baked bread and served with house-made horesradish mayo, it will blow your socks off. A close second is their Eggplant sandwich, dripping with mozzarella and smothered in a flavorful pesto--my mouth waters just writing about it. Finally, if you want to really indulge, their mac 'n cheese is the best way to do so. On top of all that, Fresh Salt is refreshingly local for being at the South Street Seaport--there are never any tourists, the staff is friendly and always says "hi!" and they offer outdoor seating which makes this just about the perfect place to get away from the office for lunch. It is rare to find a place in NYC that I have nothing really negative to say about, and Fresh Salt is one of those places. read more
