This has become my work team's go-to spot for happy hour. It took me a while to review because I didn't want anyone else to discover it! It's the most down-to-earth place in a neighborhood of fancy bars. It's a smallish space with a long bar and some seating. No frills in terms of ambiance but sometimes there's fun music. If you have a large group, better to call ahead and reserve a table. They have all types of liquor and happy hour specials. Decent menu of food, though we always get the truffle fries (yum). Service is friendly and prices are decent for the area. Only issue is it can get crowded during prime time, so we try to get there early. read more

OMG - If you love Maryland blue crabs GO HERE !!! Every Monday & Sunday ( email and make a reservation) I lucked up. I walked in on Monday about 6pm. Sat at the bar with no reservation and BOOM I fell in love. a bar that has a small section of seating. There were families there with babies but I personally would not say this is a kid friendly place. They were very accommodating to the families with kids but this place gives BAR, hang out, eat, watch the game. Its dark and all the kids there had moments of crying. Mom of 2 here so im not bothered but I would recommend if your bringing the kids come on a nice day and request outside dining. The service was good for me. Its real home bar, 2025 cheers feel to it. I sat at the bar so service was fast, the bartender was nice, down to earth and funny. A team of two one guy and one girl. Very casual, authentic but the crabs were the star of the show. small nondescript bar in what people may consider a relatively quiet neighborhood of sorts. Though truthfully, Tribeca does have a bit of a lively scene if searched for. Place has far more food options than draft beers, but perhaps that's what the people want all along. Happy hour drafts are indeed quite cheap ($6 or so?). We were wandering around downtown looking for an open bar on a Thursday night at 10:30. It was like the search for the missing link. Finally, after a 30 minute circular hike, we found a bar open. Plopping down at two corner seats, we just wanted a cocktail to pull us through our first evening in NYC. Hungry, after landing at JFK at 8:30, we gave up finding food. Everything was shuttered. Then, after turning left, heading uptown from the tower, we found a small joint open. Hip Hip Hooray. I even had to ask the name of the bar, but now I will never forget the Hideaway. Eric greeted us with his upbeat sense of humor. The Hideway reminded me of a Wisconsin tavern, my highest compliment. Drinks were strong, cheap, and everyone was welcoming. I went on a Monday despite Google saying they were closed that day. They were open and even have a special crab menu on Mondays. Unfortunately you have to make a reservation prior to showing up if you want the crab menu since it's first come, first served. Although I was a little bummed about that, u the bartender recommended the lobster roll and I'm glad he did. I was pleased with the amount of chunky crab meat in the roll even though the roll itself was small. The fries were served with a house made sauce that had some smokiness to it. There are very cool retro pictures of celebrities on the wall and the playlist consist of 80's rock. I had a pretty tasty grilled cheese to satisfy my hunger and it was a nicely made sandwich. Today was my first time visiting this wonderful little institution. I work around the corner and had never been inside. The bartender Eric was a pure Joy... I felt as if I was having lunch with a friend.. he was so lovely as to indulge me in conversation. The local patrons are also wonderful. We came upon this spot with a friend, recent transplant to Tribeca who has been systematically partaking of all watering holes in the vincinity. Tonight it was The Hideaway. Surprisingly, the food was quite good and the bartenders up to snuff. As always, I am a big fan of the buy back, which occurred after our 3rd round and 5th round. By that point, I was glad I had eaten most of my dinner to help anchor down all that Jameson's and the glut of cookies consumed at an earlier Holiday Cookie Party hosted by an apparently alcoholic mix-master of ceremonies. Note our kind cookie host is merely a native of the UK whose natural proclivites include the ability to drink enough to float a battleship. We came in for the Maryland Blue Crabs and they were fabulous! Gael, the manager could not have been more accommodating. The wait staff was top notch. What a wonderful experience. The service was super slow even to be greeted, BUT there was literally only one person hosting, bar tending downstairs AND waiting upstairs so I didn't feel it would be fair to only say 2 stars. I went to the Hideaway for lunch with some of my colleagues. When we got inside, there was the horror movie Carrie playing in the corner. That was the moment I should have walked away. I ordered the crab cake, standard bar food. There were two options on the menu. The waiter assumed the more expensive option which was almost DOUBLE the price of the first without checking with me! Fine. When the crabcakes came after FORTY FIVE MINUTES despite the bar being empty, they were EXCEPTIONALLY TINY!!!!! I cannot say enough about how small they were. I could have put them both flat on one hand. Most of the plate was a strange pickled salad that the menu did not mention. Tried to bring it up with the waiter but he did NOTHING and offered no apology whatsoever nor refund the food. Then he automatically added a 20% tip for himself to my bill, and had the nerve to ask for "additional gratuity" on my receipt. Terrible service. Atrocious food. Dreadful establishment. had a very bad experience at the hideaway last Saturday night went for dinner with my friend and 2 neighbors for the sea bass special that had been on the menu all week. when we ordered at 6 pm they no longer had the sea bass special. I don't know if they ran out or just took it off the menu. so I ordered halibut at $38. the most expensive thing on the menu!! it was so salty I couldn't begin to eat it. I called the owner Christine over to tell her and her comment was "well I see that you are going to take it home". that sure didn't solve the problem. an apology would have been nice. it came with a house salad but our waitress never asked what dressing we preferred so we were given a very accidy house dressing. Either way, if you've ever yearned to elbow past seas of rich white people with designer baby strollers blocking every pathway as you try buying a $7 domestic beer, then you've found just the spot to make that happen. I suppose you gotta know where you bread is buttered, so there's a good chance this watering hole will double as a daycare facility for the foreseeable future... Only ever been here for the CRABS in the summer time. Last night was a return visit to introduce the GF to her new found love of Maryland Crabs without leaving the city. It was delicious, and messy and fun and you get to WHACK YOUR MEAL WITH A MALLET! We got 6 of the large crabs for $46, a salad ($9 which had a great dressing, walnuts and blue cheese) and an order of corn on the cob (Which comes buttered and salted and peppered, 2 for $6). Pretty perfect summer meal. The place is small so we got there early to avoid any wait. Within 10 minutes of our arrival there were no tables left. We got there a little after 6:00 pm (Total Early Bird Special Style). The service was actually really friendly and very attentive. read more

I love Maryland. I moved there in 1990 after college to work with a friend founding a music and theater camp for kids. I liked it so much, I stayed for 7 years, and found it very hard to leave when career had to trump cherry trees and I had to come home to NY. One of the things I loved most and missed most was Maryland crab feasts. Mountains of blue crabs are piled on picnic or bar tables on top of brown or news paper, a small serrated knife and a mallet are thrown at the diner, pitchers of beer and plates of corn are tossed onto the table, empty bowls for shells, maybe a plate or two of shrimp, some white vinegar, extra crab boil seasoning, and then, you're on your own. Nothing indicates a murderous crab-eating spree more than piles of crab carcasses and red smears of Old Bay on everything within reach. If you can't feel your taste buds and your fingers are stinging from crab cuts and too much red pepper, you had a good time. Yeah, I've missed it. I tried to recreate this myself with blue crabs from Chinatown a few weeks ago, but they were small, light and not really worth the effort or the mess, and it just depressed me. As he is easily the nicest man on earth, Peter put forth a Herculean effort to find a place he could take me where we could crab out, and after much mystery, we came down here to the Hideaway to have Maryland-style blue crabs. These are boiled in Old Bay or another kind of crab boil, and then hit with mallets, knives, crackers or really leathery fingers to get at the succulent meat. The crabs are priced at market price, which fluctuated from $19 for three large crabs last Monday to $23 for the same on Labor Day. For large, heavy crabs, this isn't a terribly inflated price, but knowing that in Bethesda, I could get nearly a dozen for that price, it hurt a little. The crabs bordered between medium and large, sizewise, and most were fairly meaty. We ordered 12 to begin, with two platters of peel and eat shrimp, which were firm, fresh and deliciously spicy with tons of Old Bay. Blue Point, Stella Artois, several wheat beers, O'Hara Stout and a number of other faves were on tap, with about a dozen more available in bottles, including Red Stripe. The partners/owners of the Hideaway are Virginia transplants, and apparently missed the crab fest thing as much as I did. They began offering Monday night crabs as long as they hold out and are in season, and the results are spectacular. The only complaint I had was the fancy-schmancy and rather superfluous crab forks provided, which don't get at the leg meat as well as intended, and the lack of small knives, which I think are indispensible for crab consumption. I would also like to praise the bar itself. Clean, trim, tidy and elegant, the music selection is outstanding with emphasis, both times I was there, on the Beatles and classic rock that wasn't overly loud. Bathrooms are well-stocked, clean and friendly. Regular bar fare is a notch above the usual, with no gastropub illusions so much as upscale simple bistro fare. Prices were reasonable. Final tab for four of us eating about two plates of shrimp and twenty crabs ($90/dozen), and drinking a fair amount, was about $300 with tip. We tipped well....this is a messy business. The crowd is rare for Tribeca, meaning, people at the Hideaway were as genuine and friendly as you would expect to find anywhere else, with none of the glamazon or elitist factor you tend to find in other Tribeca watering holes. Nice wine selection, good glassware, competent service, and a SMOKING HOT bartender all helped make this a special night. I could have lived without the Duke Basketball photos in the john, though. My friend from Maryland demystified the cumbersome task of decrabbing something, the 'no mallet needed' way. Knowing someone was going to teach me how to eat crab, I had a better time and actually ordered 3 oversized crabs myself this time. My friend said in Maryland, unlimited crabs, corn and fries are included for $40. Here they aren't. Note that the longer you wait, the colder the meat gets and the harder to get the meat out. Allow me to share it with you guys, cuz I'm nice like that: HOW TO EAT A CRAB (THE EASY WAY): 1. Remove the hind legs first, then the other legs/claws - hold the joints and twist so it doesn't break at the joint and you get meat after you pull 2. Pull the shell open - lift the male genitalia and stick your thumb between the shells - get a good grasp and pry open (Interesting tidbit: ALL the Maryland Blue Crabs will be male because the females need to be released so they can procreate) 3. Throw the top shell away (unless you want to eat the tamale) 4. Remove the lungs on each side 5. Break it in half horizontally 6. Pick through the meat and save the claws for last Alternatively...if your significant other already has crabs, you can save lots of money. In that case you can eat crab ALL DAY, EVERYDAY! The first time I went to this bar, one of the owners was really intent on getting everyone to do the Worm (remember that 80s dance move where you flop down on the ground, and worm up?) and when we participated in the Worm, the free drinks started flowing. after a beginning like that, the Hideaway has a special place in my heart. Plus, the food is good (i've only had the burger, but if the burger is tasty, 'nuff said). and there are cool black and white photos of rockers on the walls. if you're ever in Tribeca and trying to find a bar that's not packed with people, go to the Hideaway - I guarantee it will be quiet even on a weekend. in fact, my only complaint is that I have never seen more than 6 people in this bar at any time - a few more visitors would liven things up. hopefully you will read this and check it out. read more
